#PDXRoseFestival @PDXRoseFestivalROSE FESTIVAL STORIES: FRED MEYERThe company famous for one-stop-shopping began itsaffiliation with Rose Festival in 1981, the same way manyother companies got started, with a float in the Grand FloralParade. That year’s Fred Meyer float featured dancing pinkhippos, of all things, but didn’t include longtime mascot FredBear, who has made countless Rose Festival appearances andridden on many festival floats since.Fred Meyer’s Executive Vice President, C. Dale Warman joinedthe Rose Festival’s board of directors in the 1980s and becameactively involved with parade leadership, boosting corporateinvolvement in float entries. In the meantime, Fred Meyerbranched out its Rose Festival affiliations, becoming the firsttitle sponsor of the festival’s field marching competition, theFestival of Bands, a sponsorship that lasted into the 1990s.Successful festival sponsors are often looking for innovationin the programs they support, and Fred Meyer is a greatexample. In the late 1990s, Rose Festival and Fred Meyerworked together to develop a kids program in affiliationwith the Grand Floral Parade: For six years the ‘Fred BearJunior Judges’ chose their own sweepstakes winning float.The judges were selected through an essay contest, and thewinning kids were dressed in Fred Meyer outfits and actuallygot to ride the Fred Meyer float along with their namesake,Fred Bear himself!In 2004 Fred Meyer became title sponsor of one of the festival’smost popular events, the Junior Parade. The Junior Parade’sunique footprint in the Hollywood District aligned perfectlywith Fred Meyer’s commitment to that neighborhood. Theoriginal Hollywood Fred Meyer, with its distinctive rooftopparking lot, opened in 1931; it’s now one of Fred Meyer’smost popular shopping centers.The primary retail location for the Rose Festival souvenir pin,Fred Meyer remains integrated into several Rose Festivalevents, helping to provide the wardrobe for the Rose FestivalCourt and populating the Grand Floral Walk with employeesand family members. And their Grand Floral Parade floatcontinues to be a highlight. From those first dancing hipposto the ginormous gnome in 2019, Fred Meyer floats arealways fun.41
