A NOTE FROM THE TEAM
Welcome to the 2020 “Breeding Book”
edition of The Speckle Park Journal. First off,
I would like to thank the advertisers for
their continued support of the Journal. It
has been a pleasure to work with you, learn
about your programs and understand how
to serve you best.
Within these pages, you will find an
exceptional representation of what Speckle
Park breeders have to offer commercial and
seedstock producers. Our advertisers could
be as close as your neighbour or on the
other side of the world. There are Speckle
Park genetics working wherever it is that
you call home. If you are looking for a new
bull, take a look at what these breeders bring
to the pasture. Your new herdsire could be
selling just around the corner.
With bull sale season upon us, it is
important to remain competitive as the
available market share seems to get a little
tighter each year. The national cowherd in
Canada has remained stable over the past
few years, yet every bull sale season, there
are more and more catalogues piled up on
the coffee table. With that, it is imperative to
stand out amongst the competition. Know
that your investment with The Speckle Park
Journal places your ad on the top of that
coffee table stack. The esthetically pleasing
presence coupled with enticing editorial
guarantees an enthusiastic read through.
Thank you to the team that worked to
pull this edition together. It has been a
great experience and would not have been
possible without your expertise. To the
advertisers and readers, your feedback is
always welcome. Please feel free to contact
me and let me know how we can continue
to support you through this next decade of
Speckle Park history.
Sincerely, Jacob Onyschuk

CSPA CORNER
Welcome to the 2020 “Breeding Book”
edition of The Speckle Park Journal.
A new decade brings opportunities
for the advancement of Speckle Park. In
the past 10 years, the Canadian Speckle
Park Association has gone from an
annual registry of 159 animals from 71
memberships in 5 provinces, to 1,402
registrations from 220 memberships in
8 provinces, the USA, and internationally.
If we continue with our current growth
trends, which are averaging 13 percent
per year, by 2030 the CSPA would see an
annual registry of 4,800 animals!
The board is committed to adapting
to these changes, and assessing the
needs of the association as a whole.
Sustaining growth of this degree requires
significant planning in resources and
breed development, focusing on proactive
planning to succeed in times of rapid
forward momentum.
Originally known as a small breed,
identified by its unique colour pattern
and Canadian heritage, we need to
continue pushing forward and capturing
more market share. As a breed, we need
to focus on gathering quantitative data to
substantiate breed merits. It is imperative
that we provide reliable proof points to
win the respect of commercial cattlemen,
feedlots, and seasoned purebred
producers alike in order to encourage
investment in Speckle Park genetics.
This past year saw major transitions
for the association, including switching
from Microsatellite to SNP genomic
testing, beginning EPD development,
and rebranding of marketing identity.
Thank you for your patience as we
continue the genomic transition.
Support for the CSPA youth donation
heifer was outstanding with a total of
$28,7000 raised. As an association, we
recognize that the future of agriculture
itself relies on our youth. Finding ways
to foster growth throughout junior
programs and buy-in from the next
generation is not only important to
our breed, but also the long-term
sustainability of the beef sector.
Remember that the annual general
meeting will take place in Saskatoon, Sask.,
from June 19-21. We look forward to
seeing everyone there and working on the
next phase of the Speckle Park journey!

voyage Speckle Park!

have topped sales for their breeders,
including Wattle Grove Project A

Australian record at AUD$30,000.
Wattle Grove Codiak Magic K9 sold

Canadian National Grand Champion Bull banners in both 2014 and 2015,
and then siring JSF Unmarked 2D, who showed alongside his dam to win
Stockade Roundup Grand Champion Female honours in 2016, and then the
champion bull banner at the same show in 2017. He has nearly 250 progeny

that Untapped offers growth, as well as milk production in his daughters.

River Hill 26T Walker 60W resulted from the mating of two of the most
influential individuals in the Speckle Park breed, River Hill Traffic Jam 26T
(No. 3 sire) and River Hill Show Me Off 60S (No. 4 dam). A two-time national
champion in 2010 and 2011, and the only Speckle Park bull to ever make the
top ten in the RBC Supreme Beef Challenge at Canadian Western Agribition,
Walker has also sired multiple champions, including the 2012 Canadian
National Champion Female and the 2015 Canadian National Reserve

Farm. “This sire puts width, depth, heel, and maternal traits that will give you the

River Hill 26T Yager 99Y has made his mark walking the pastures of several
premier herds. Codiak Acres acquired part ownership in Yager 99Y from River
Hill Farm in 2012, after which time he produced high sellers for both farms.
Belmoral Farms purchased him in 2014; Don Bell says he sires uniform,
correct females with very tight, tidy udders, enough milk to raise a good calf,
and good feet. Though Yager’s daughters and granddaughters stand out in
many pastures, Bell believes the sire’s legacy may be in his sons. “He has sired
some top bulls, not only in Canada, but also internationally,” says Bell. “We are using sons
with great results – time will tell, but we expect the same positive results. He’s really bred
beyond our expectations.”

THEFUTURE
growing
FORWARD
charting the course for the next decade
24 THE SPECKLE PARK JOURNAL
After receiving official breed status
in Canada 2006, Speckle Park nearly
tripled in size from 2010 through 2019,
both in terms of annual registrations
and memberships. It is now the fastestgrowing
breed both at home and in
Australia, and there are cattle registered
in nearly ten countries around the
world – an impressive accomplishment
for a breed humbly developed on the
Canadian prairies.
As a new decade begins, Speckle Park
breeders and commercial users have
much to look forward to in terms of
breed development, market expansion,
and enhanced Canadian Speckle Park
Association member services.
The CSPA board is in the midst of
creating a five-year plan to measure
performance and growth, says General
Manager Whitney De Decker. Breeders
are working on gathering and submitting
data for the association’s new genetic
evaluation program. Ultimately, Expected
Progeny Differences for Speckle Park
will be available to allow breeders and
commercial users the ability to compare
animals’ genetic potential and make
better-informed breeding decisions.
In addition, De Decker says the CSPA
is working to collect “quantitative data
that will substantiate proof point of the
breed that we use as marketing tools,
such as ultrasound, carcass data, feedlot
performance, and bull test stations.” For
their members, the association plans
to maintain ongoing focus to enhance
online registration abilities, while working
toward the implementation of a Total
Herd Enrolment program.
In this period of exponential growth and progression, Speckle Park breeders have high aspirations for the future.
The Speckle Park Journal spoke with several to hear their vision for the next ten years
QUESTION ONE
What priorities will your operation
be focused on for the next decade?
QUESTION TWO
Where do you see the Speckle Park
breed in ten years?
on the table in order to put the breed in the
mainstream of cattle production. If the breed
continues to focus on expanding the numbers
and genetics, all the while maintaining the
integrity of the important attributes and
qualities of the breed, it will continue to catch
the attention of cattle producers – young
or old, new or established, and big or small
operations – in ten years, making Speckle
Park a household name in the cattle industry.
DESERT ACRES
Tracey Foster Duriez
FORT ST. JOHN, B.C., CANADA
REPLY TO QUESTION ONE // Being a relatively
new breeder of registered, purebred Speckle
Park cattle (2017), our goal is to build a herd
of females and bulls that is consistent in
type and functionality, but with diversity in
genetics. We want show high-calibre Speckle
Park cattle that are also topping the market
in carcass results. Our goal is to have Desert
Acres-bred cattle showing at Canadian
Western Agribition and standing toe-to-toe
with some of the best, and to sell our genetics
to customers around the world. Some would
say that is a big vision to accomplish in ten
years, but I love big dreams and aspirations,
along with the journey to achieving them! I
was told by my parents from a very young
age, “No matter what you do in life, do it to
the best of your ability!”
REPLY TO QUESTION TWO // We see the
Speckle Park breed becoming synonymous
with the highest-quality meat on the market.
Speckle park cattle will no longer be looked at
as the “new breed” or a “fad,” but as a top-ofthe-line
beef supplier for high-end restaurants
and steakhouses. The breed needs to move
forward to getting more Speckle Park meat
INC CATTLE CO.
Rob & Janice Harasymchuk
SASKATOON, S.K., CANADA
REPLY TO QUESTION ONE // To those
watching from the outside, the evolution
of Speckle Park must be something to behold.
In a matter of a few short years the
breed has transformed from a handful of
pretty, spotted cows – a novelty, really –
to mainstream acceptance, to new breed
dominance, world wide, with unparalleled
growth numbers. The INC program is committed
to this continued development.
Our program will focus on milk production
and udder improvement, feet and frame
score, as well as increasing testicular size
and consistency. Our marketing strategy will
remain fixed on

THEFUTURE
expanding numbers in the U.S.A.
and establishing this vast market.
The combination of great cattle and
vigorous promotion will ensure
exponential growth south of the
border in the next decade.
REPLY TO QUESTION TWO // We
believe it is paramount that as a breed, we
hold ourselves to a higher standard when
it comes to animal improvement. We must
be relentless in our culling process and
remain vigilant to the betterment of the
breed, otherwise we will simply be known as
another flash in the pan and will fall by the
wayside like so many others before. We feel
the next ten years are crucial in both breed
development and securing new markets.
PARKVALE SPECKLE PARK
Robbie Clark
NORTH CANTERBURY, NEW ZEALAND
REPLY TO QUESTION ONE // Our priorities will
be to grow our female base with the focus on
breeding well-structured animals with good
figures that will produce functional bulls for
both the beef and dairy industries within New
Zealand. The New Zealand dairy industry is
embracing Speckle
Park for their colour
marking, vigorous
nature, and great
meat qualities. We
want to deliver a
lower-birthweight
sire with good
growth and IMF
to meet the needs
of this growing
sector. Our biggest
challenge in the
next ten years in
Australasia as beef
producers, apart from the climate, will be from
environmentalists. We have to embrace this
change and adapt our operations to minimise
our environmental footprint and produce
premium products. Speckle Park can deliver
on this and we will be promoting Speckle Park
beef to the commercial producer, focusing on
26 THE SPECKLE PARK JOURNAL
their great traits to yield highly, mature early,
and easily convert feed from our 100 percent
pasture-based systems into premium meat.
REPLY TO QUESTION TWO // In the New
Zealand dairy industry, I see Speckle Park
being one of the major players as a crossbred
beef sire. We are already seeing exciting
results and great demand for Speckle Park
beef through meat processors, butchers and
restaurants, and in ten years, with the growing
number of studs and increasing commercial
producers, I see Speckle Park becoming a
sought after beef breed in both New Zealand,
and on the international stage.
WALKERBRAE FARMS
Scott Walker
GUELP, ONT., CANADA
REPLY TO QUESTION ONE // We feel that there
is room in the breed to improve udders and
milk production. We’d also like to focus on
breeding a larger framed cow because that’s
what the market dictates.
When you are competing with larger framed
cattle in the market place, as a purebred
breeder you still need to keep in mind what the
cow calf operator wants as well as the feedlot
operator. There should be a balance between
form and function. A good old stockman told
me once that, since the beef breeds don’t have
a true type model to go by, you should use the
original true type Holstein Freisian model as a
goal to strive for.
REPLY TO QUESTION TWO // We would like to
see the market expanded into other countries.
This can be achieved by taking advantage of
the Speckle Park’ uniqueness of having black
and red cattle since the beginning of the breed.
Due to the climate of some countries, they
prefer red cattle, so why not start to register
them and create another marketing tool?
By not registering them we may be missing
out on the next great bull that could take the
breed to the next level, just because he’s red.
The focus should be quality over colour.
We also feel that the genetic pool needs to be
widened. If it isn’t widened, our concern is that
all the time and effort dedicated to developing
Speckle Park could be all for nothing because
of the negative effects of inbreeding. One
way to achieve this is to open the registry to
the red Speckle Park. Another way would be
some form of opening the herdbook. We need
to continue to focus on the positives of the
breed. With the continued guidance and open
mindedness of a strong board of directors the
sky is the limit to what this breed can offer
many producers around the world.
WARATAH SPECKLE PARK
Laiton Turnham
GUYRA, NSW, AUSTRALIA
REPLY TO QUESTION ONE // At Waratah
Speckle Park, our farming operation has
always been focused on the commercial side
of Speckles; to make this breed even greater
than it is now, you need to make it more
popular with more beef producers! As the
number of Speckle Park cattle grows, so do
the opportunities for the purebred breeders,
through to the commercial guys, and then
to the processors who still can’t get enough
Speckle Park to supply to the consumer! Our
goal and our focus is to breed Speckle Park
cattle that out-perform our competitors and
taste great to the consumer.
REPLY TO QUESTION TWO // Most people
overestimate what can be achieved in one year,
but underestimate what can be achieved in ten
years. With that in mind, to see where Speckle
Park will be in ten years, we should look at
the past! In the past ten years in Australia,
Speckle Park have gone from a virtuallyunknown
breed to the fastest-growing beef
breed in the country. Of the 33 breed societies
in Australia, in 2019 the Speckle Park society
ranked in the top ten for registered members.
At Waratah, we started 11 years ago with 22
stud calves born, and in 2018 we had over 300
stud calves born. If we can achieve this in the
first ten years, imagine what can be achieved
in the next decade. The future is huge for the
Speckle Park breed.
WATSON LAND
& LIVESTOCK INC.
Peter Watson
BRANCHTON, ONT., CANADA
REPLY TO QUESTION ONE // For the next
decade we will continue to focus on breeding
females with good udders, ample milk, and
great feet and legs, that will be able to raise
calves trouble-free for many years. We also
plan to use the genetic testing to make more
informed breeding decisions.
REPLY TO QUESTION TWO // In the next
ten years, I think that the Speckle Park breed
will be sought after by feedlots for their feed
conversion, and by commercial cow/calf
operators for maternal females that can handle
any type of environment.

HERDCONSULT
resuscitating
calves
In both the beef and dairy industries, producers have
discussed many ideas among themselves regarding the best
ways to stimulate a weak calf that perhaps doesn’t want to
breathe. With calving season just around the corner, this
is a good time to explore techniques and get the calving
maternity area supplied and stocked up. I will share some of
my experiences as to what works and what doesn’t, and also
highlight procedures that are worth performing and others
that are a waste of time. None require a lot of expense, and
saving one extra calf converts into dollars down the line, not
to mention it is doing the right thing.
The need to stimulate calves should be the exception in
today’s cow-calf operations. Calving problems have been
greatly reduced, so unless it is a difficult birth or there has
been a delay in getting the calf out, such as a full breech
presentation, resuscitation shouldn’t be a routine occurrence.
There are many reasons calves may be
born weak, and recognizing when these
conditions could occur will help you
be more prepared. Malpresentations,
torsions, harder pulls, and meconium
staining create an increased possibility
of the calf coming out weak, which
means time is of the essence. Other
potential causes may include a cow
experiencing weight loss due to sickness,
or abnormalities during pregnancy.
Alternatively, a cow losing body condition
in late pregnancy could be carrying twins.
After any assisted calving it is a good idea
to carefully examine the uterus for tears
or another calf. If you find a second calf,
assist in its delivery immediately.
I have also seen the need to resuscitate
when the water bag fails to break, as calves
can drown in as little as one cup of fetal
fluids. It isn’t always the result of a delayed
birth – even calves born naturally with
the water bag over the mouth may need
resuscitation. This can also happen in a
very quick birth in which the water bag
has not had enough force on it to break.
Watch for these cases as well.
There are several forms of resuscitation
or easing newborn calves’ breathing. If you
see there is a strong heartbeat, the goal is
then to establish breathing and oxygenate
the blood. One thing we know for sure
is that hanging calves to drain fluid out
does no good, and in fact, actually makes
it much more difficult for the calf to
breathe as all the organs are pushed down
by gravity onto the lungs. The fluid that
does come out is generally draining out
from the stomachs (rumen). You are much
better to get the calf sitting up in a froglegged
position with both back legs pulled
forward. This way, both lungs can get air
equally as much, as would happen with a
standing calf. Extend the neck forward to
open up the airways and then go to work
with what I will now describe.
Wipe away any large amounts of mucous
around the mouth. There are some good calf resuscitators
that simply bathe the area in extra oxygen, which helps if
breathing is not strong. Some of these provide suction as
well. Mouth-to-mouth resuscitation is ineffective, as the air
simply goes down the esophagus and inflates the stomach –
it doesn’t get into the lungs where it needs to go.
If breathing is slow with a stronger heartbeat, you are
best to stimulate breathing by either sticking a piece of
straw into the nostril, pouring cold water in the ear, or
putting cold snow in the ear to essentially irritate the
calf and get it going. Try the straw on a normal calving
sometime to see the quick response you get.
If there is no response, the calf is in trouble. The only
thing I have found that works is a respiratory stimulant; this
used to be Dopram or Doxapram, but now some clinics need
to get it formulated by a pharmacist. Your veterinarian can
44 THE SPECKLE PARK JOURNAL
look for respiratory stimulants and hopefully find one, but
will need to prescribe it to you as it may only be approved for
other species. In order for it to be useful, it must be close by
in your calving kit and readily accessible. Just a few seconds
at this critical point may make the difference, so it’s advisable
to have the dosage for a calf drawn up and ready to go.
If you are getting a large number of weak calves, there
are several factors to consider in the herd management. Is
intervention too slow, especially in the case of heifers? Once the
calving process has started and regardless of if the waterbag
has been broken, time is a ticking. A common misconception
with producers is they have lots of time if the waterbag has
not been broken and that simply isn’t true. Intervention in
Mouth-to-mouth
resuscitation is ineffective,
as the air simply goes
down the esophagus and
inflates the stomach – it
doesn’t get into the lungs
where it needs to go.
Dr. Roy Lewis, DVM
practiced as a large animal veterinarian
specializing in beef cattle for more than
30 years at Westlock, Alta. He now
works part time as a technical services
veterinarian for Merck Animal Health.
1-1.5 hours is a good
rule if no progress has
been made.
With breech births (calf
is backward with both
hind legs presenting)
and torsions, we know
often that time is
running out, so being
ready to stimulate the
calf is imperative. In such situations, once the tail head of the
calf comes through the pelvis, the umbilical cord is essentially
broken and the calf will try to start breathing. This is where
a faster pull from that point on will save calves, and is why it’s
recommended to always assist a backward calf when possible.
If placenta is starting to come first, again, time is critical
and it may already be too late, but attempt to get the calf
out as quickly as possible.
Weak calves may also be the result of nutrition, vitamin, or
mineral deficiencies, or imbalances. Strive to make sure that
body condition score is maintained on both cows and heifers,
and that they are on a good mineral and vitamin program.
These deficiencies develop as the calf is growing in utero,
and are not a quick fix to reverse. As examples, selenium
deficiencies can lead to the weak calf syndrome and iodine
deficiencies can cause a goiter and weak or stillborn calves.
If a calf is born dead, or weak and dies soon after birth, a
lot can be learned by a postmortem and having tissues sent
away to help with the diagnosis. This could shed light on
potential problems and allow time to correct them.
One last word of advice on delivering a calf and
preempting the need to resuscitate: check the viability of
the calf by putting fingers in their mouth to evaluate how
good the swallowing or gag reflex is. If it is very weak,
you can be sure the calf will be sluggish when delivered.
Also, if the calf is overly active and thrashing around, this
could be a sign that they are in distress and are oxygen
deprived. Try to get them out as quickly as possible and
then use your resuscitation skills as necessary.
In summary, be ready with effective resuscitation
techniques and be ever vigilant of the cases that may
predispose newborn calves to need reviving. With the
right tools, you and your veterinarian can save more
newborn calves this spring. SPJ
