J ust as Easter coincides with spring and the
renewal of nature, so it is with the school year.
This is the time when we start visiting primary
schools and talking to Year 6 pupils and their
teachers about the move to KHS. At the same time,
transition arrangements for our year 9 get well under
way, with the move to their upper school suddenly
appearing very close. I think a lot of Year 9 pupils
find the summer term slightly poignant, as they
realise, almost all of a sudden, that their time here is
coming to an end and new challenges await them. The
fact that several subjects have already started
GCSE work with them adds fuel to this feeling. Two
of my own children have been through this school and
I always remember a comment from my youngest
daughter. She went through every phase of education
from nursery school through to university. During the
course of a discussion about this, she let slip the
three years she’d spent at Kibworth were the most
enjoyable of all. This was despite having been taught
by her father. I hope that many of our present pupils
will look back with similar feelings.
May I wish all of you a happy Easter and bon voyage
to those fortunate to be travelling away.
School Term Dates 23/24
A
s I write, we are nearing the end of another successful Year 7 Enrichment Week. The feedback
from those on the Northumberland residential (basking in temperatures in the 20s!) has been
very positive. Here in Kibworth, the rest of Year 7 have earned themselves lots of praise from their
teachers as they participated in the following range of activities organised by Mr Mulholland, Head of
Citizenship and Enrichment Week Co-ordinator: cycling proficiency training and road safety; teamwork
through building a straw tower and a lego activity; washing the elephant (don’t ask!); an archaeology
project with the University of Leicester; a visit to Burton Overy farm and a chance to get to see some
new born lambs; PE activities; a village study walking around Kibworth; a visit from a Roman soldier; a
Library project, and a workshop from local author and ex-Kibworth student G.L Twynham. I am sure
you will agree this is a very varied and interesting programme – and all for free.
For the rest of the school, the curriculum has been more or less as normal with the following
exceptions: interform competitions for Years 8/9; Sex and Relationships lessons for Year 9; extension
workshops for Year 9 gifted and talented pupils in Music and ICT, and a Design Technology problem
solving/teamwork activity for Years 8/9.
I mentioned in the last newsletter the need for parents to back our high standards for behaviour and
manners in school, and I should like to thank you for your continued support in this. I make no apology
for the fact that we have very high expectations, a view supported by the Department for Education
and Ofsted in their latest pronouncements about behaviour in schools. It goes without saying that being
off task in class, not following school rules and using an inappropriate tone with adults can all contribute
to disrupting the learning of other pupils, and is therefore unacceptable. Bringing up children can be
hard at times and we encourage you to talk to us about ways in which we can work together. There is an
article further on in this newsletter about a “Living with Teenagers” course - a supportive series of
free workshops which come highly recommended.
Another source of support for parents in terms of online behaviour is a booklet called Digital Parenting,
produced by Vodafone and available as a download (108 pages) on www.vodafone.com/parents
Alternatively, we have some hard copies in school. Let me know if you would like one. Remember, it is
very important that you monitor the content of your child’s phone, Facebook account, etc to ensure
they do not put themselves in a compromising situation.
On a lighter note, I heard on TV last week that chocolate is not fattening. Make the most of the news
and have a guilt free indulgence in an Easter egg over the holidays. No doubt by the time we return to
school someone else will have decided it is bad for us once again – so enjoy it while it lasts, and have a
restful break.
In house Produced Filled Rolls
Coming in the Summer Term
In response to feedback from pupils and staff
regarding the brought in sandwich collection, we
have this term trialled our own in-house produced
selection of rolls. These are proving to be extremely
popular with pupils and staff. This being the case,
we will continue to produce these selections and add
to the variety available.
The Salad Bar will be back with lots of variety to choose from. Also we will be
producing pasta pots and salad pots. Hot meals will still be available and our
rotation menu will be changing giving details of the selection of foods/beverages
available each day. Please check the school website for the new rotation menus.
PARENTPAY
Please remember to use ‘Parentpay’. This is the web
based site that can be used to make payments for your
child’s dinners, trips, music lessons, etc. If used to pay
for dinners this avoids the queues at break and lunchtime
at the revaluation machines. If you have mislaid your
Holy Week is the time when Christians commemorate the most
important events in Christianity: the death and resurrection of Jesus
Christ. Good Friday is the day of the arrest, trial, crucifixion, death
and burial of Jesus Christ. In Leicester city centre at 10am on Good
dramatic retelling of Jesus’ journey to the cross. This Passion play will
start at St Peter’s Square, Highcross and end with an act of worship in
Humberstone Gate. If you want more information go to: http://
When our eldest son became a teenager it seemed as if he’d grown horns overnight and had
a personality transplant; he became angry, bad mannered and answered back all the time.
He would shout at us and stomp off and slam doors and throw things about. He also
became lazy, he slept all the time, never left his room and he was secretive and
monosyllabic. Our home suddenly became a war zone with everyone shouting at each other
and we just didn’t know how to cope.
Talking to a close friend one day, she said she was having the same problems with her
teenager and she gave me a leaflet about some help we could get. Things really came to a
head shortly after this when our son stormed out of the house, apparently not to return!
Distraught and confused, we ‘phoned the team at Fun and Families, who listened to my
tearful account with complete sympathy and understanding. They came round to talk to my
husband and me and we signed up for the very next “Living With Teenagers” workshop.
We went along one evening a week for 7 weeks to join a very small group of parents in
similar situations.
The workshops are totally confidential, they are fun and relaxed, they are sometimes soul
searching and at times emotional. We soon began to learn why our teenager was behaving
so badly, how best to identify the triggers that would set off the bad behaviour and above all,
how to avoid the destructive confrontation that was making all our lives hell. The workshops
are really comfortable, relaxed and are in a secure and safe environment; everyone is made
really welcome by the group leader. We never once felt inadequate or unworthy. From the
very first meeting we began putting our new parenting skills into place at home and by the
end of the 7 weeks my husband and I had learned to work together to develope a whole new
way of managing our teenager - who actually said to us that he was really pleased we’d been
to the workshops! The results were just amazing - our home stopped being a battlefield and
we all breathed a sigh of relief.
Our son was about to go into GCSE mode and he’d never have coped or had any wish to
work for his exams as things stood. Two years later we still use many of the tools the
workshops gave us and we have never looked back. Yes, we still have a few minor blow ups
with our teenager, but what we don’t have anymore is all the pent up anger, frustration and
the tears. In fact, we can all laugh about it with our teenager now, and he has blossomed
into a lovely young man. The workshop saved not only our relationship with our teenager,
but I am absolutely certain it saved our marriage too.
Even if your own situation isn’t quite like ours, but you would like to know what makes your
teenager tick, do the workshop - we can’t recommend the team highly enough. In fact all of
us in our little group were a bit sad when the 7 weeks came to an end, though you can go on
more courses if you feel you need to, and the team is always welcoming and very happy to
offer advice, support and sometimes just be there to listen.
Year 9 Boys Football
Squad: Elliot Taylor, Charlie Price, Liam Bateman, Alex Hobart, Harrison Norton, Josh Ashman,
Jack Dowle, James Parker, Niam Morar, Josh Knight, Christian Farrar, Connor Donnachie,
Jamie Nicolello, Jac Johnson, Felix Coupe, Euan Ford & Rhys Robinson.
What a final season this squad has had – unbeaten in the league for the third year running, last
32 of the National Cup and Semi-Final of the County Cup. In my 16 th year as Head of PE at KHS
this is without a doubt the best team to pass through. They have only lost 4 games over the 3
years with us which is a phenomenal achievement. Mr Murphy and Mr Edwards wish them, all
the best for their future footballing careers whether in or out of school.
Year 8 Boys Football
Squad: Ben Perkins, Dan Bray, James Bonser, Matt Brown, Jack Tebbutt-Smith, James Milsom,
Oscar Trier, Jack Langton, Elliott Coe, Ivan Tapper, Ben Fisher, Joe Meyrick, James Mason,
Ben Watson & Matt Emery.
A season of 2 halves for the year 8 boys! 3 losses before Christmas saw the team out of both
the County Cup and the National Cup a lot earlier than all of us would have liked. However,
since Christmas, the boys have remained unbeaten and have won the South Leicestershire
Schools’ League which is a great achievement. This bodes well for next season!
Year 7 Boys Football
Squad: Lori Savi, Jack Clipston, Jed Acton, Ollie Foster-Pollard, Matt Donaghey, Alex Rose,
Will Blackburn, Tom Fielding, Ciaran Hill, Ben Di Salvo, Josh King, Ben Parkinson, Kieran Ashman
& Matt Orr.
This season has been very good for the year 7 squad in their first year at Kibworth. The boys
have finished second in the league with 8 wins and only 2 losses, which is an achievement
considering the high standard this age group has seen this season.
They are currently in the semi-final of the County Cup where the opponents are South Wigston
and this will be a very tough game. Good luck to the team.
Under 12 Girls Football (Year 7)
The U12 Girls Indoor 5-a-side team played in the County Tournament this season and won their
qualifying league here at Kibworth before Christmas. At the end of February the 5 qualifying
league winners met in the County Final at Gateway College in Leicester.
The girls played well only losing 1 game out of their 5 and ended up 3 rd . Well done to the squad:
Hannah Cufflin, Saffron Prior, Lizzie Stocks, Sarah Stocks, Shaniya Morton, Emily Buckley &
Sophie Domingo.
Under 14 Girls Football (Years 8 & 9)
The U14 Girls Indoor 5-a-side team played in the County Tournament this season and won their
qualifying league here at Kibworth before Christmas. At the end of February the 5 qualifying
league winners met in the County Final at Gateway College in Leicester.
The girls played excellently and ended up winning 3 and drawing 1 and agonisingly losing out to
Beaumont Leys School for the Trophy by 1 goal. Well done to: Penny Smith, Abi York, Ellie
Palmer, Jess Seaton, Katie Preston, Aimee Gardiner & Amy Cowen.
The 11-a-side team have has a great season and have made the County Cup Final which is due to
take place after the Easter holiday. Wins over Sir Jonathan North (9-0) and Abington (3-1)
saw them face Thomas Estley in the semi-final.
This turned out to be an excellent game. The score finished at 2-2 after full time and extra
time, therefore, leading us to penalties. After the first 5 penalties the score was locked at 2-
2 and then in sudden death, luck swung our way and Penny Smith saved their 7 th penalty for us
to win!
Well done to: Penny Smith, Sarah Bates, Abi York, Tegan Allen, Ellie Palmer, Megan Bond,
Hannah Wood, Jess Seaton, Amy Cowan, Katie Preston, Aimee Gardiner, Charlotte Mathers &
Fran Blackburn.
Under 14 Boys Badminton
The year 9 boys badminton team have had an excellent season winning their County Qualifying
League by winning all 6 league matches easily.
They have now qualified for the County Final on Tuesday 27 th March at Babington School,
Leicester where they will play a semi-final match and then compete in either the final or the
Olympic Torch – Earlier this week the Olympic
Torch Route was officially announced by
LOCOG. As expected, the torch will be passing
through Kibworth in ‘Torchbearer Mode’. The
route will follow the A6 with the procession
starting at 5:05pm. An interactive page
showing the full route is available here:
www.london2012.com/olympic-torch-relay-map
More information will be passed to pupils and
parents when we get it.
Young Leaders – 2 groups of year 8 and 9
pupils were selected to undertake Young Leader training. Over the past 5 weeks
we have undertaken a series of sessions teaching the Young Leaders about how to
modify activities based on the participants they are leading and available
equipment and space. Pupils have been recording what they have learnt through a
series of worksheets within a booklet. Over the next half term, pupils are being
encouraged to use their new skills by volunteering to help out within school and
community clubs. Within school, pupils will be involved in sports clubs, refereeing
lunchtime football matches on the field, officiating at inter-form activities and
helping at sports days at KHS and local primary schools. Some pupils may also be
selected to help officiate at athletics meets.
Rugby – After the snow cleared, we were able to start up the year 7 boys’ after
school rugby programme. Brian Jordan, a coach at Market Harborough RUFC,
volunteered his services to lead the sessions. These practices have been very
popular and there has been a consistent group of 25 boys who have attended
each week. We also revived the year 8 and 9 boys’ rugby sessions, led by Craig
Marshall (MHRUFC), Darren Copson and Luke Green (Leicestershire’s Community
Rugby Coach). Many thanks to all the coaches who have volunteered to lead
these sessions over the past weeks; without them, it would not have been
possible to offer after school rugby this year.
Page 18
Leicester Tigers Match – Near the start of this half term,
letters were sent home with every pupil about the
opportunity to purchase reduced price Leicester Tigers
tickets. A representative from Leicester Tigers will be
collecting the booking forms this week and tickets to the
match on Friday 30 th March at 7:45pm will be posted out to
home addresses.
Girls’ Activities – Thanks to funding from the Learning South Leicestershire
School Sports Partnership and the Leicestershire and Rutland Primary Care
Trust, we have been able to run a series of sessions for year 8 and 9 girls. These
sessions featured street dance, cheerleading and Zumba. Unfortunately due to
coach availability for the first few weeks, these sessions clashed with another
club being run for these pupils. However, we re-arranged the final classes in
order to avoid this clash. Those involved have enjoyed the sessions, and are
looking forward to the final Zumba session. Again, thank you to the coaches who
have been involved in delivering these sessions.
Swimming – On Wednesday 7 th March a group of pupils were selected to
represent KHS at the Under 14 School Sports Partnership Swimming
Competition. This is the 3 rd year we have entered this event and the 2 nd time we
were able to field a full team. Finishing 6 th last year, our aim was to improve our
position to 5 th . With a strong group of year 7 swimmers, and more experienced
year 8 swimmers we achieved this target, finishing ahead of rivals Welland Park
and only missing 4 th position by a few points.
Special mentions go to race winners:
Nathan Brightman – Boys 25m Backstroke
Olivia Weller – Girls 25m Breaststroke
Sarah Bates – Girls 25m Freestyle
Sarah Bates, Anna Samuel, Olivia Weller & Amy McArragher – Girls 4x25m
