school and family in spirited competition in the land down
under. We look forward to having you and your fellow
teammates become part of the Down Under Sports experience.
The competition is intense and exciting with
coaches and players engaging in this truly unique sporting
event.
Over the past twenty-one years tens of thousands of
athletes and coaches have participated in this awesome
experience. Some have had the opportunity to return
down under to compete and coach a number of times.
The Down Under Sporting events give visiting American
athletes a safe environment to compete, sightsee and
enjoy the genuine hospitality of the Australian people.
We would like to thank all the parents, family and friends who support and help each athlete in their
fundraising efforts to minimize out of pocket expenses. By using the proven ISSI fundraisers as outlined in
this book you can cover most, if not all the cost of this trip. We encourage you to approach fundraising with
the same determination and work ethic you have developed as an athlete.

HISTORY
The Down Under Bowl is the largest American football
championship tournament of its kind held outside
the United States. The first Down Under Bowl was
inaugurated in 1989 making 2010 our 22nd year.
TOURNAMENT
Dates: June 10, 11, 13, 14, 15, 16, & 17 2010*
• Teams are divided into brackets of four teams. Each
team plays in two games. The outcome of the first
game determines whether a team’s second game is a
consolation or championship game
• Games are played according to high school federation
rules
• Officials are from the United States and Australia
FOOTBALL
• Game time consists of four 12 minute quarters,
with a minute between quarters. Half time is 15 min.
• Australian and New Zealand teams are invited to
participate in the Down Under Bowl
• Medals and awards presented after the second
game
• Athletes need to bring their own pads and helmet

The 21st year of the Down Under Bowl featured
outstanding teams and players from the United
States, Australia, and New Zealand.
The Run-a-way Bay Sports complex, with their
sports turf field, hosted the competition which saw
many of the rugby teams who were also training
here, enjoy this exposure to American Football or
Gridiron as it is known Down Under.
This years teams had players from 35 different
states plus two teams from the Queensland Gridiron
Association.
Another highlight of this years competition was
the opportunity to have 24 players from Australia
and New Zealand join different teams to complete
with and learn from the US players.
The competition once again was extremely competitive.
The football officials from the USA noted
the games were equal to the highest level of the
state play-offs from their state.
This years competition had four different Down Under
Bowl champions.
The first championship featured Team A (Kangaroos)
and Team B (Kookaburras) playing the two
Queensland Stingray teams. The Kangaroos won
their game 32-0 and the Kookaburras lost a close
game to the Senior Sting Rays 6-0. Coach Bryan
Davis and the Kookaburras did come back to win
the Championship and Gold Medal with a hard
fought 8-0 victory over Steve Kurschner and his
Kangaroos, who won the Silver Medal.
The next Championship series found the competition
extremely close. Coaches Chisum and Dions

2009 DOWN UNDER BOWL
Team F (Barracudas) won the championship with
a hard fought championship game again Coaches
Posey and Roberts Silver Medal winning Team G
(Kangaroos). Coaches Hayes, Williams, and Doerfler
lost a close game to the Gold Medal winning
Barracudas and took home Bronze Medals.
The final championship series featured some of the
most outstanding games ever played in the Down
Under Bowl Championships. The 25-22 overtime
victory by Team J (Taz Devils) and Team K (Echidnas).
The Taz Devils, coached by Gary Stoddard
and Jim Gueck, won the Gold Medal and championship
with a hard fought win over Coach Scott Morgan
and his Silver Medal winning Possums. Coach
Steve Fitzhugh’s Echidnas won Silver Medals with
their 20-0 win over the Sharks.
Coach Shawn Murgal and his Sharks also won silver
medals for their 9-0 win over the bronze medal
winning Kookaburras coached by Jack Daniels and
Australian coach Peter Lilley.
A special thanks to Australian Coach John Murphy
who also helped Tom Posey and Demetrias Roberts
coach the Team G Kangaroos.

As the president of International Sports Specialists,
Inc (I.S.S.I.) and Down Under Sports I have personally
witnessed the growth and development of cheerleading
in Australia and New Zealand. Twenty-one
years ago when we started to bring football teams to
compete in the Down Under Bowl we were accompanied
by cheerleading teams which added the sideline
razzle-dazzle that American football (Gridiron, as it
is known in Australia) is known for. The Australian
public have been truly amazed as they witnessed first
hand, high school cheerleaders perform the many
outstanding routines, stunts and cheers.
Most Australians really didn’t know what to expect
from U.S. cheer teams except that they are cute,
cheer, chant and shake pom-poms. Cheer teams have
performed at football games, malls, schools, theme
parks, civic events, parades, rugby, rugby league and
Australian Rules football games. From these performances
people got to see how physical, well balanced,
graceful and strong US cheerleaders truly were. Lifting,
tossing and catching flyers who trust their team
mates to catch them when dismounting into a basket
catch along with using their outstretched arms
as they hold aloft the weight of another cheerleader
above their heads. These and many other amazing
feats have captivated all who witnessed the many
teams that traveled down under over the last twenty
one years and have inspired local Australian girls to
want to become cheerleaders as well. A few teams
were in existence 21 years ago in Australia and as
more people became aware of this fledgling but exciting
sport more and more teams were formed. Clinics
were held and American coaches were brought in to
teach and inspire Australian coaches and cheerleaders
alike.

2009 DOWN UNDER CHEER
More and more teams were created until a national
competition was organized. G.A. (Gymnastics Australia)
is the governing body who presently administers
and organizes the national cheerleading competition.
Gymnastics Australia has commissioned Down Under
Sports (I.S.S.I.) to recruit teams and cheerleaders
from the United States to come and compete at
this major event.
A second competition which was created by a school
teacher named Tamara Nasario from the state of
Queensland has grown over the past eight years to
become the largest high school competition in all of
Australia. Over 5000 spectators attend this competition
as they crowd into the arena at South Bank in
the heart of Brisbane, Australia. Schools travel as far
as 3,000 kilometers to come and compete at this
growing event. American high schools cheer teams
have never competed at this competition. Down Under
Sports (I.S.S.I.) have been given sole responsibility
to invite high school teams and cheerleaders from
around America to attend as guests and the first
international competitors to attend. 2010 will be a
historic year for those American teams that are able
to compete.

• Teams who do not wish to compete can perform at two Down
Under Bowl football games; sideline cheering and a half time
performance
• Additional performances at one of the following: theme park,
shopping mall, or school assembly

I started my teaching career nine years ago at
Mabel Park State High School in Queensland, Australia.
As a beginning teacher I was given the role
of coaching the Cheerleading team. I am the first
to admit that I knew nothing about Cheerleading
but the enthusiasm of the cheerleaders was infectious.
The cheerleaders were training three mornings a
week, lunch hours and after school. It was then
that it occurred to me that they were training for
nothing in particular. Nine years ago there were no
competitions to enter or anywhere for the cheerleaders
to perform except for school functions. I
then approached my boss and asked if I could run
a Cheerleading Championship. Staff thought I was
a little crazy as they thought there may not be any
interest from other schools to enter.
This was the beginning of something big. The first
year was a trial run and it was amazing how popular
the concept of cheerleading was. We sold
out of tickets and had hundreds more people outside
disappointed because they could not watch
the Championship. The schools that entered the
Championship put on an amazing show.
I had no idea what I had started! We renamed the
event the ‘QLD All Schools Cheerleading Championship’
and every year the Championship seems to
just get bigger and better. The Championship is
now held at Suncorp Piazza at Southbank in Brisbane.
Every year the standard is raised and the crowd’s
line up for hours to ensure great seats. The crowd
atmosphere year after year is fantastic. Every
school that enters always receives crowd support
which ensures that the cheerleaders leave the
stage with a real high from their performance. The

Championship ensures that there is always a positive,
electric atmosphere.
The Championship allows only school teams to enter
to ensure that the level of the competition is a fair
playing field. Teachers/Coach’s have commented
that the ‘QLD All Schools Cheerleading Championship’
is easy to enter in regards to the availability
of all relevant information and guidelines.
In 2010, this will be a significant Championship for
us, as it will be our tenth year of competition. Every
year the schools train for many hours in order to
put together an outstanding routine. The coach’s
and cheerleaders always give 110% to each performance.
I am very proud of organising the ‘QLD All Schools
Cheerleading Championship’ as it is a night that
every cheerleader performing will never forget.
The Cheerleading Committee are building memories
that will last a lifetime.

Dani Ruoff is in her 2nd year as the Head
Cheer Coach for Kansas State University.
Ruoff, a native of Shepherd, MT, came to
Montana State University Bozeman from
Billings, Montana, where she coached for
three years at a Division I university and
then nine years at MSU-Billings. Before
coaching college, she coached a class 4A
high school team in Ketchikan, Alaska.
(1995-97). Ruoff has close to twenty years
of coaching experience in all levels of cheer,
dance and mascoting.
With a degree in marketing and fundraising,
Ruoff is the head coach for the cheer
and mascot program at Kansas State University.
Ruoff also conducts camps that are
held all over the states of Montana, Wyoming,
Colorado, Kansas and Alaska.
Ruoff is specializing in the safety of the
sport in cheerleading and trains coaches
and athletes abroad in these areas.
