Year 7 Transition
The Year 7 into Year 8 Transition Evening is being held on Thursday 29 August,
commencing at 6.00pm. School tours will commence at 6.00pm with the official
transition presentation commencing at 6.30pm in the school lecture theatre. The night
will highlight the variety of programs on offer at Proserpine State High School and the
quality teaching and learning experiences that complement these programs. On the
evening I will explain the six principles of junior secondary which will underpin our
approach to year 8 education in 2013 and beyond.
Junior Secondary
Introducing the Junior Secondary Model at Proserpine State High School
Among the various key reforms described in the Queensland Government Education
White Paper, A Flying Start for Queensland Children, is the creation of a Junior
Secondary phase of education encompassing years 7 to 9.
The White Paper notes that, by 2015 more than half the children in year 7 will turn 13.
Educators agree that young teenagers are ready for greater independence and the
depth of learning that high schools provide, which is why in most other states and
territories, year 7 is already the first year of high school.
Defining years 7 to 9 as a distinct phase of schooling recognises the particular
features, challenges and opportunities associated with early adolescence.
How the reforms will impact our school
Our school will introduce Junior Secondary model for year 8 to 9 from 2013 onwards
with the anticipate arrival of our year 7 students in 2015. Staff, students and parents will
be well-supported as we implement the junior secondary model into our school
structure making a clear distinction between the senior and junior phases of learning.
Part of this support will come through professional development and information
sessions that build awareness of tailoring school to the specific needs of early
Local Boy to Compete in the London Paralympics
David Nicholas, an ex-student of Proserpine
High State School, has made the Australian
Cycling Paralympic Team.
Always very focused and determined, David
would not let anything get in his way of his
goals, including his disability of Cerebral
Palsy.
Since leaving school, he has completed a
course at TAFE in IT and is currently
employed as an IT Support Officer at Whitsunday Regional
Council.
When David was at school he was interested in manual arts
and athletics. However, this was very hard on his knees. The
reason he started cycling was to help strengthen his knees.
David started competitive cycling in 2008 and had victories
in 2009, 2010 when he first represented Australia and in 2011
became world champion at his first world event in the Road
World Championships. This was his greatest moment. His
heroes are Cadel Evans, Robbie McEwen and Stuart
O'Grady.
David relaxes by surfing the net and listening to music. He
has developed a love for travel and his favourite place for
holidays is Italy. He enjoys karate and holds a black belt.
However, he has had to put this on hold for the time being,
due to dislocating his knee twice. David has been working
very hard at his fitness due to these injuries but is sure that
he will be ready for the Paralympics in London.
We wish David all the best in his pursuit to take out Gold in
London. If anyone wants to show their support, there are 25
support posters put around the region at major shopping
centres, libraries and council offices.
Whitsunday Athletics Club has changed training to
Wednesdays from 3.45pm.
School Cluster Project Applications for 2013
State schools and Catholic schools in the Whitsunday region are
this year able to access RREAP funding. RREAP funding is
administered by the Department of Education and Training and the
Queensland Catholic Education Commission in an effort to address
the educational needs of geographically isolated students.
As well as receiving individual school funding, each school has
received cluster funds to go towards funding joint school initiative
projects and projects from community organizations working in
partnership with RREAP schools. Local community organizations
and schools are invited to apply for funding for projects which
address the additional costs associated with enhancing the
educational opportunities of Whitsunday students disadvantaged by
geographic isolation. The amount of Whitsunday cluster funding
available is approximately $25,670.02.
Funding applications can be made using a simple application form
and must be based on the funding guidelines. Applications must be
signed by two school principals and two parent organization
representatives from the cluster before being submitted to the
school cluster committee.
All funding applications are to be submitted electronically to the
chair of the Whitsunday Cluster Committee -
the.principal@proserpnshs.eq.edu.au by 5pm, 9 November 2012.
Information on school cluster committee funding guidelines and
an application form for project submissions can be found at http://
rreap.qld.edu.au/ .
In considering applications the school cluster committee will give
priority to projects – our priority for 2012/2013 is LITERACY and
THE ARTS.
which benefit the most students in the region,
which cover more than one priority area
which have a literacy and/or arts focus
Any issues, concerns and /or questions regarding the submission
and approval process should be addressed to the Whitsunday
cluster committee in writing.
From the Year Eight Co-ordinators…….
It is hard to believe that we are almost at the end of August
and there are only four months until the end of the year. Our
year 8 students have changed physically, socially, intellectually
and emotionally since the commencement of their secondary
schooling.
The majority of the changes have positive outcomes, however,
some of the elements of their social development require
closer attention and this was the focus of last week‘s
assembly.
My father always said, ―If you haven‘t got anything nice to say,
then don‘t say anything at all‖. Surprisingly, when I recited that
quote to the year 8 female students, they joined in as they had
obviously heard it before. In the past, we would speak face to
face or on the phone or even write a letter to our friends/family
when discussing something. However, today Facebook, text
messaging and email are faster forms of communication that
takeaway the ―processing‖ time. That period of time when we
think through the consequences of our words, tone, body
language, etc. before the message was communicated.
Unfortunately, the ―send‖ or ―post‖ buttons are close to the text
are pressed before the massage can be proof-read for
correctness and consideration for how the message will be
interpreted.
Respect for self, respect for others and rumours were also
addressed at the assembly. Students are best to ignore a
rumour or go directly to the source. However, if your son or
daughter feel that they are not comfortable with the situation,
then they should be encouraged to talk to their parents and/or
a staff member regarding the situation.
Communication is the key in these situations. Talk with your
child about their day, even if it was ―okay‖. ―What subjects did
you have today?‖ ―What did you do at lunch time?‖ These are
simple conversation starters to keep you connected in the
development of your son/daughter.
Senior Leaders
Every year, year 11 students are invited and encouraged to
apply to become a senior leader within our school community.
Firstly, students must attend a workshop; secondly, complete
an application form; thirdly, face an interview with staff and
current senior leaders.
The process is modelled on applying for a job, hence
students get exposure to the skills necessary to ‗sell themselves‘
and justify why they would make good senior leaders.
Proserpine State High School recognises that there are many
styles of good leadership and try to encourage students to
build and develop their skills in the leadership domain. As with
any voluntary position, the more you put into the opportunity
the more rewarding the experience for the individual.
We are thankful that there are numerous students who have
pride in their school, are prepared to stand up and help shape
the future of their/our school.
Congratulations to the following students who
were awarded their badges during Monday‘s
parade last week:
Principal Perspective continued…..
adolescents. The Junior Secondary model will enable us to
provide the best environment for the academic, emotional and
social development during the critical early high school years.
The Junior Secondary Model is focused around six principles.
These are:
 Distinct Identity
 Quality Teaching
 Student Well-being
 Parent and community involvement
 Leadership Local
 Decision Making
In a nutshell, we are promoting an environment where
teachers truly know their students, know how to engage their
students and support them through their educational journey.
The impressive part for me, as someone new to the school, is
that these values are already shining through strong at
Proserpine SHS.
Currently the school is using these principles and creating a
framework to commence implementation in 2013. The main
questions we are looking at are:
What are we already doing in regard to each principle?
What evidence is there to show that what we are doing is
effective?
If we change what will we do, what evidence will we collect to
measure the effectiveness of the new approach?
Student Talent
Over the past two weeks I have had the privilege to recognise
and witness firsthand the immense talent of our students at
Proserpine SHS. Firstly I congratulated on parade to the
following students for their outstanding sporting success. The
following three students were recently selected and
participated in the U16 NQ Indigenous Rugby Union team at
the Lloyd McDermott Indigenous State titles: Kumya Gabey,
Tom Clarke and Byron Taylor.
Also due to another outstanding display at the Queensland
trials, the following two students have made their respective
teams to compete at the National titles: Alice Ruddell, Queensland
Squash team and Llyod Clode, Queensland Cross
Country team.
At the Gala Concert I witnessed the immense talent of our
instrumental music students from both the primary and high
school bands as well as some impressive individual
performances. On top of this, our performing arts program was
on full display with students singing and dancing in several
performances. Congratulations to all the students involved and
quite fitting that our senior students finished the evening with a
wonderful finale.
I also visited the drama room this week to see a spectacular
drama performance produced by our year 11 drama students
during the Lunchbox Theatre session. The 20 minute
performance could have been held on stage at the lyric theatre
in Brisbane. The first class performance had myself and the
other 70 students mesmerised from start to finish. I was
extremely impressed with the respect shown by the audience
with not a word spoken throughout the act.
Behind all of this talent are outstanding teachers and staff
working hard to support our students and provide them with
quality opportunities across a range of interests which will allow
them to gain success and achieve their aspirations in life. I
thank them all for their dedication and commitment to the
students of Proserpine SHS.
Our students in the Home Economics and Art Departments
have been excelling in the creative arena with multiple
accolades awarded for their very original and inventive designs
entered into both the Mackay Student Festival of Fashion and
the Reef Festival‘s Wearable Art competitions. These students
faced tough competition from both state and private school
students but with their hard work and passion in striving for
excellence, their entries were a highlight of the parades.
Congratulations to Marissa Oliver, Isabella Demartini, Laura
Hurren, Nicole O‘Sullivan and Lauren Teys for their outstanding
achievements at the Student Festival of Fashion and the Reef
festival‘s Wear-able Art Competition.
School Opinion Surveys
Forty parents have once again been randomly selected to
complete the annual School Opinion Surveys, along with 120
students and staff. The surveys gather important information
regarding the operation of the school, whilst identify areas
performing well and areas for improvement. I urge parents who
were selected to return your survey as the data gathered from
your opinion is valued and utilised to benefit the education of
our students.
Whitsunday Reef Festival 2012
The annual Rotary Wearable Art Awards at the Whitsunday Reef Festival were again a great success attracting an
appreciative audience and participants from grade three to grade eleven. The strong culture of creativity in the
Whitsunday–Mackay region was reflected in the colourful and innovative student creations, with entrants from
Proserpine High, Cannonvale Primary, St Catherine’s, Whitsunday Christian College, Mackay North State High and
St Patricks, Mackay.
Proserpine High was proudly represented by designers Isabella Demartini (first and third – years
8 to 9), Lauren Teys second – years 8 to 9), Nicole O’Sullivan (VHC- years 8 to 9), Marissa
Oliver (second, HC and HC – year 11) and models Angel Shaw, Ayla Hadley, and Marie Philp.
The students first entered their creations in their age categories, with nineteen entries in four
categories. This was followed by the popular Cruising the Whitsundays category, introduced this
year to encourage the entrants to interpret the essence of Whitsunday life,
and attracting eight entries. Lauren Teys won the Cruising the Whitsundays
Award.
Wearable Art as an art form essentially involves the creation of interesting
and eye catching garments from unlikely materials and the entrants embraced
this concept enthusiastically. The recycled materials used for some of
Saturday’s amazing entries included newspaper, plastic bags, tin cans, paper
offcuts, old dress patterns, wire, poly rope and even an electric blanket while
other entrants chose to be creative with recycled and new fabrics.
The Rotary Club of Airlie Beach generously sponsored the event again as part
of their comprehensive youth initiatives program, and twenty two cash prizes were awarded to
the motivated entrants. The special award for Outstanding Creativity went to Bethany Cordwell
of St Patricks College and the Innovative Workmanship Award went to Samantha Cridland of
Mackay North State High. The full list of the prize winners in all age categories will be
published on the Reef Festival website www.whitsundayreeffestival.com.au.
Instrumental Music
The Gala Concert was a resounding success
with 120 students from Proserpine High and
Primary entertaining a robust 300 person crowd
last Thursday night.
I was very pleased with the performances of
all ensembles but I‘d like to make special
mention of Isabelle Silberling and Alex Dinte
who appeared in nearly act as either primary
performers or accompanists. These girls
volunteer endless hours to help others with their performances, and always perform with a high standard of professionalism.
Special Gala moments included Proserpine‘s first euphonium solo by Laura Hurren and accompanied by Jemimah Thompson,
chamber group performances by junior saxes, senior saxes, and the senior trumpets, the debut performance of the Ukelele
Orchestra, and of course a spectacular performance of Pirates of the Caribbean by the Concert Band. Thanks to Miss Pukallus
and the choir for joining the Stage Band in a rendition of their favourites, and to our guest artist, Lauren Steele for her theatrics
with Isabelle Silberling on the xylophone.
I‘d also like to thank the parents who made donations or volunteered their time on the evening. They were supplemented by a
willing and able crew of senior students who did a superb job of stage management, lighting, catering and raffle management. A
sincere thank you to all.
We‘re already in preparation for the October Musical Cabaret. The students have been helping me select repertoire for A Night
At the Movies and I‘m excited to say, it‘s already shaping up to be a spectacular show. Start rounding up some friends and book
the date in now, Thursday October 25. Tickets will be available in the office after the holidays.
You can next catch our musicians performing at the Senior Drama Production on the evening of Tuesday August 28 (highly
recommended!) and at the Uniting Church Flower Show on Saturday September 1. Enjoy the fine melodies of Isabelle
Silberling, Alex Dinte, Lara Mathews and Breana Chauntler from 1:45pm at the
Flower Show.
Drama
A Drama Night You Can’t Miss
Coming up on Tuesday August 28 is an event I urge you all to come see, the
―Year 12 One Act Plays‖. Both of our year 12 drama classes will be performing
unique, interesting and thought-provoking plays.
The first play, War Crimes, is an intriguing tale of members of a regional
coastal town, primarily teenagers, who fight for respect and try to form an identity
in a town with limited opportunities. Tension in the town rises when a local is
killed in war and an Iraqi refugee family relocates there, and hostility and
apprehension escalate to a climax.
On the other hand the second play, The Matilda Women, is a story about nine
extraordinary Queensland women from Queensland‘s past. It‘s
fast moving imaginative theatre where one object can transform
into another in the space of a heartbeat. This play celebrates
the strengths and achievements of these very inspiring Queensland
women. Mark August 28 down in your calendars. You
won‘t want to miss these plays.
