P RINCIPAL’ S PERSPECTIVE
Chris Roff
Principal
Microsoft Global Forum
Deb Brown and I have now returned from an awesome week in Washington DC, where
we represented our school at the Partners in Learning Global Forum. It was huge - 700+
delegates from 70 countries were present. The Australian contingent included primary
schools from Victoria, West Australia, Tasmania and Queensland, but we were the only
high school at the 2012 Pathfinder school level from Australia.
The focus of the program is on innovation and with a conference theme of Your idea
matter, we had many opportunities to share what we are doing here and to learn from
world leading schools about their own journeys, trials and achievements. The structure
of the program links three similar schools at the Pathfinder level with one school a year
ahead, called a Mentor school.
Our mentor school will be Botany Downs Secondary College in Auckland, NZ, motto:
Knowledge with Character. Their school structure has classrooms built around a
centralised shared space, where students can learn from a teacher, in groups or by
using technology. This gives a focus upon individualised learning plans and activities.
Our fellow Pathfinder schools are Sisler High School, in Winnipeg, Canada (1700
students) and Lake Washington High School, USA (380 students). Both these schools
have a very high focus upon the use of computer technology in their learning programs.
However, we are the only school in our group who will have a 1:1 ratio of notebooks to
students in 2012, so they also have a keen interest in our program and how it unfolds.
Not only did we form good friendships with the representatives of these schools, but we
also mingled with the other 60 Pathfinder schools, and the other 29 Mentor schools,
learning about their programs and sharing ideas about the future of education. We were
challenged to confront the fact that in a world where anyone can learn almost anything
for free and where learners are increasingly mobile, networked, global and collaborative,
we are in the actual moment of change - how we teach is not going to be how we taught.
Keynote speakers included world leaders in education and global networking - inspiring
would be an understatement. All this in a city of monuments and beauty, with a reception
held at the American National History Museum and the final dinner at the American
National Portrait Gallery - both part of the Smithsonian Museum, another key partner
with Microsoft and their Partners in Learning program. Indeed the welcome speech was
delivered by the chairman of the Smithsonian.
So, back home, after a 26 hour journey, what does it all mean for Proserpine High?
SCHOOL WATCH
The school grounds and buildings are patrolled on a regular basis and any visitors to
this school must have prior permission to be on site. If you notice any suspicious
2011 Student Resource Scheme fees should now be paid in full.
If this is not the case, please make payment an urgent priority.
Student Portfolios will be issued to year 10 students on their last day of school, 25 November. As the portfolios are
funded by the Student Resource Scheme, the resource scheme fees must be paid in full to be eligible to receive a
portfolio.
STUDENT RESOURCE SCHEME 2012
The 2012 Student Resource Scheme package, including subject requirement list, has been distributed to students. If you have
not received this package, please urge your student to collect the package from the school office. The cost of the scheme for
2012 has remained at $220, as endorsed by the P&C Association.
For ease of management of the Student Resource Scheme, for both administration and students, full payment of the
resource fee by 10 February 2012 is the preferred option. If financial constraints do not permit full payment, term instalments
of $55 are offered, to be paid in the first week of each term. Late payment will attract a $5 late payment fee. This fee is waived if
the school has been contacted and a payment plan negotiated.
Payment of the 2012 resource fee is now being accepted, with a large number of families taking the opportunity to pay early
to alleviate the financial burden experienced at the start of a new school year.
For convenience, the school offers automatic term deductions from credit cards. These payments of $55 are accessed at
the start of each term by the school and receipts sent home via the student’s care group roll. Please complete the relevant
section of the Participation Agreement Form, page 5 of the Student Resource Scheme package, if you would like to take advantage
of this payment option.
Internet banking is also a convenient method of making payment. The school’s banking details are outlined on the
Participation Agreement Form (page 5). If choosing this method, it is important that the completed Student Resource Scheme
Participation Agreement form with receipt of internet banking attached is returned to the school office.
The school office will be closed from the end of school 2011 and re-open for business on Tuesday, 17 January 2012.
RETURN OF TEXTBOOKS
Parents and students are reminded that all textbooks, library books and other resources loaned to students under the Student
Resource Scheme must be returned to the school before the student completes the 2011 school year. It is vital that every effort is
made to return the resources to the school as purchasing replacements diverts funds away from other areas of need.
Students are asked to return all resources to the LIBRARY by the day of their exam.
Failure to return items on loan for 2011 will result in an invoice being issued for payment. Please assist by checking your
student’s room and promptly returning all books to the school library.
Your assistance in this matter would be greatly appreciated.
THANK YOU
The Whitsunday Reef Festival Committee and Rotary Club of Airlie Beach would like to thank the enthusiastic
students from our school who participated in the 2011 Rotary Wearable Art Awards event, both as designers
or models. They were all excellent ambassadors for our school. Thanks to their efforts, the 2011 event was
very successful.
Would you like to be a VOLUNTEER?
Proserpine State High School would like to invite all new and existing parents of 2012 students to become a volunteer at our
school canteen.
We currently have a wonderful team of willing mums who assist our canteen convenors once a month in providing a
convenient, profitable and healthy service to our school community.
Our school canteen is a great place to meet new people. It’s a wonderful opportunity to meet your child’s teachers, school staff,
as well as your child’s new friends and their families, all in the informal environment at the “hub” of the school.
Unfortunately each year as our senior students move on, they take their mums (our volunteers) with them, so we are always
grateful for some new year 8 parents to fill their shoes!
We understand everyone is busy but, for as little as 2 hours, you will find volunteering extremely rewarding for both you and
your child.
If you would like to assist our volunteer team please call us on 4945 0119, pay us a visit between 7am—2pm or return the
following form to the school office….
The Attorney-General, Paul Lucas, has launched a community awareness campaign on 8 November called Supplying Alcohol to
Minors is no Minor Offence””.
With Schoolies week and other end-of-year celebrations on the horizon, the campaign aims to promote our teenagers’ safety by
reminding adults about the consequences of giving alcohol to minors.
The Queensland-wide campaign is aimed at educating parents and adult friends and family of teenagers aged 14-17 about the
risks and penalties of supplying alcohol to minors for unsupervised consumption. It conveys a clear message - adults shouldn’t
give minors alcohol for unsupervised consumption. If they do, they could go to court and be fined up to $8000. Responsible
supervision cannot be provided by any adult – it can only be provided by a parent, step-parent, guardian or adult who has
parental rights and responsibilities for the minor.
Page 5
A key strategy of the campaign is to reach adults before they purchase alcohol for a minor and as such the campaign is focused
at point-of-sale outlets including bottle shops and hotels where liquor products are sold over the counter. The campaign is also
targeting accommodation venues in key Schoolies zones across the state. Further information for parents and adults is available
through the website at www.olgr.qld.gov.au/consumers/responsible_drinking/secondary_supply/index.shtml.
So what can parents do?
Talk to your kids about the risks and consequences that can occur when drinking.
Don’t be afraid to say no when your underage teens ask you for alcohol. You have a legal obligation not to give it to them if you
are not able to ensure that it is being responsibly supervised.
Check the information on this website under Schoolies which provides useful tips and topics to discuss with your children to help
keep them safe and out of trouble.
Even if your teenager is over 18 years, talk to them about drinking responsibly. Some tips on how to drink responsibly are also
available on this website under Responsible Drinking””.
Please carefully consider what this means for us as parents. It is not only our year 12s that are finishing school but our younger
students that feel the need to celebrate the end-of-year. Please consider accessing the website or read the attached flyer if you
require further information.
Principal’s Perspective continued….
We have a mountain of business cards, we will have access
to rich veins of experience, ideas and big thinking, our teachers
will have access to a series of Virtual University sessions with
world leaders in education and as the year unfolds, I believe
you will feel the powerful impact of eLearning in the way we
teach, and the new ways in which our students will learn. If we
believe that the future world will belong to those who can think
creatively, adapt easily to change and solve as yet unknown
problems in innovative ways, then the challenge for us as
educators is to scaffold, support and encourage our young
people to hone these skills. There are very exciting times
ahead, as the journey has only just begun…
Road Works
Thanks to everyone for your patience whilst many roads in
Proserpine are upgraded. The impact upon the school bus
runs have been minimised, but obviously the works are
causing difficulties with access and parking. As we all know,
there is pressure to complete this work before serious rains
begin and within the timeframe set for the expenditure of the
grant funds paying for the improvements. When it is finished,
Ruge Street will be greatly enhanced, which will improve the
presentation of our school.
A few weeks left….
To all remaining students, I urge you to make the most of the
lesson time remaining and to maximise your achievement
results. Students should remain in regular attendance until
their official last days. Year 10 and 11 is Friday 25 November
and the school year ends for all on Friday 9 December. There
are worthwhile programs for all students until the end of the
year, so please support our efforts by ensuring your child
attends regularly until their last day.
Kind regards to all - the packing is looking daunting!!
CHANGES TO SCHOOL HOLIDAYS
After an overwhelming response to its recent survey on
proposed holidays, the Queensland Government is introducing
changes to make our work-life balance even better.
The Queen’s Birthday holiday will be moved from June to the
first Monday in October with a one-off Queen’s Diamond
Jubilee holiday to be held on the June long weekend in 2012.
This means in 2012 the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee holiday is
on Monday 11 June and the Queen’s Birthday holiday on
October 1.
Student free days will be shifted to create a two-week break
at Easter—making it easier to plan a break, keeping the length
of school terms more consistent and easing disruption for
families.
For more information visit www.qld.gov.au/holidays.
