It wasn’t until Iarrived on this island that I have beenoverseas and done my own laundryor wash dishes, or make my ownbed. It’s been one of the greatestperks. However, like other places inthe world, when you rent from theschool or company you are workingfor, they maintain the domesticdevices you rent.The problem here? 939 is acall service with an army ofcontractors that will come out torepair rental devices, plumbing, aircon,and anything you didn’t buy onyour own or install yourself. If you callyour own, more dependable repairperson, or try to fix it yourself, youput yourself at risk for replacing therentals at a high cost.I think my current dishwasherwas sold in 90’s. The first repair manappeared hours early while I was atwork. Now I have called a second939 appointment. Wish me luck. It’smore of a rinsing machine anyway.Perhaps the dude can actually “fix” itto wash. I might have to try hiringsomeone else’s maid, part time.THE BUCKETS THEORY“When your SH*T bucket fills up and outweighs yourmoney bucket, it’s time to leave this place.”I heard this phrase forthe first time last week.Depending on whom you ask,you will either get “everyoneknows that one” or “what?you’ve never heard that?”It makes total sense. Ijust hadn’t heard it put that waybefore. We earn a handsomesalary with lots of benefits, butthere is a ton of SH*T we gothrough to live in this countryand work on the island.COVID has now comealong and added to the SH*Tbucket for a lot of people. Evensomeone like me, that hastoughed out some very difficultcountries and travels, has hisbucket filling up quick.For the first time in thepast four years, I had amoment of longing to be a newteacher in a new country again.It was a fleeting feeling broughton by reading a book about ateaching couple that went toteach in the Congo for the2005-06 school year. As I readthrough their account ofl a n d i n g i n C o n g o a n dexperiencing their new school, Icouldn’t help but escape to mypast similar experiences inseven different countries.After a moment, itdisappeared like Keyser Söze.This is still the best school I’veworked at. Even after 7monthsof being locked into thiskingdom, I am up for anextended stay. If the bucketsdon’t tip wrong, 10-13 totalyears. Then somewhere else.
