6— Vanguard, FRIDAY, AUGUST 7, 2020 Man, 25, to die by hanging in Ekiti for murder By Rotimi Ojomoyela ADO-EKITI—An Ado Ekiti High Court, yesterday, sentenced a 25-year-old man, identified as Mohamodu Haruna, to death by hanging. In his judgement, Justice Adekunle Adeleye said “there are no surrounding circumstances that destroy the cogency of the circumstantial evidence led against the accused. “He is caught in the web of the last seen theory. In the result, I find the defendant guilty as charged. He is sentenced to death by hanging. The prosecutor, Shirley Atanel, said the offence was committed on February 12, 2018 at Odo-Uro, Iyin Ekiti, in Irepodun/Ifelodun Local Government Area of Ekiti State, when he murdered one Mohamadu Usman contrary to section 516 of the Criminal code law CAP C16, Laws of Ekiti state, 2012. The prosecutor’s witness told the court that he saw two herdsmen with their cows while he was on his motorcycle, he later discovered that one of them was returning a blood-stained machete into its sheath and the other one lay face down in the pool of his blood with machete cut on his neck. To proof his case, the prosecutor called four witnesses, including the IPO, while exhibits tendered were the accused confessional statements, photographs of the deceased butchered neck and a blood-stained machete. The accused spoke in his defence through his lawyer, Yinka Opaleke, and called no witnesses. Trailer kill 2 Keke passengers in Kano By Bashir Bello & Abdulmumin Murtala A multiple accident, Wednesday, claimed the lives of two while many sustained various degrees of injuries along Sabon Titin, Panshekara to Gaida road in Kano State. According to an eyewitness, Sharif Jikan Nana, two persons died in the accident in which the trailer crushed the tricycle conveying six passengers and dragged them with a parked vehicle into a nearby culvert and shop. Jikan Nana said it took them about 40 minutes to pull the victims out from under the trailer and evacuated them to a hospital in the state. The tricycle rider, Aminu Abdullahi, crying uncontrollably said the trailer ran into his tricycle as he was trying to dodge a car parked by the roadside. Spokesman of the Federal Road Safety Corps, FRSC, Kano, Kabir Ibrahim Daura, confirmed, saying it involved a trailer, a Toyota Space Wagon car and a tricycle rider. Fashion designer, 20, in coma after alleged attack by policeman over N50 in Osun By Shina Abubakar OSOGBO—A policeman attached to Ibokun Divisional Headquarters in Obokun Local Government Area of Osun State was said to have hit one Ayomide Taiwo, 20, with a gun butt on the head over N50 bribe. It was gathered that Ayomide, who was returning to Owena-Ijesa from Iragbiji, Boripe Local Government Area after the Eid-el-Kabir festival, was attacked at Ilahun community, where the unidentified officer was on checkpoint duty with his colleagues. At press time, Ayomide, who is a fashion designer, was in a coma at the Intensive Care Unit of Ladoke Akintola University Teaching Hospital, Osogbo since Tuesday when he was taken into the emergency clinic by the Obokun Divisional Crime Officer. The gunmen, according to sources, launched the bloody reprisal attack over the alleged destruction of their camp located in the forest close to the village by men of Police security outfit, Operation Puff Adder, in collaboration with the villagers. The police security outfit, it was learned, had Tuesday night invaded the militant camp reportedly fingered by some residents as a base for illegal bunkering, kidnapping and other criminal activities. It was also gathered that the gunmen set ablaze a nearby building, damaged a vehicle and a worship centre known as the ‘Lion of Judah Fire Deliverance Ministry’. Confirming the incident, spokesman of the state police command, Mr Asinim Bustwat, in a statement said two persons have been arrested in connection with the attack. He said: “On August 5, 2020, at about 2300hours, armed suspected cultists stormed the Lion of Judah Church, Azikoro village, Yenagoa Local Government Area, Bayelsa State, shot dead four church members namely: Alfred Marcus, ‘m’ 30 years, Imomotimi (surname unknown) 25 years, Gabriel Ejimofor, ‘m’ 45 years and Uchechukwu Ejimofor, ‘f’ 38 years and set ablaze a nearby building, damaged a vehicle and the church. “Operatives of Operation Puff Adder had earlier traced the hideouts of the cultists in the bush, dislodged them and burnt their camp. It is believed that this is a reprisal attack by the suspected cultists. “Meanwhile, two suspects have been arrested and are cooperating with the Police in their investigation. “The Commissioner of Police, Mike Okoli, visited the scene, reassured members of the community of adequate police protection and ordered for full Investigation to unravel the motive for this dastardly attack.” Gas explosion kills one, 2 in critical condition in Calabar By Emma Una CALABAR— An explosion at a gas dispensing company located on 77, MCC, Road, Calabar, Cross River State, Wednesday, killed one person with two others left with severe burns. It was gathered that the three staff that were caught in the explosion were working on the surface tanks when the explosion occurred. One of the victims, whose name was given as Promise, reportedly died shortly on arrival at the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital while the other two victims are receiving treatment at the Intensive Care Unit of the hospital. An attendant at a gaming shop, Ofuka, located at the complex where the incident occurred, said the explosion, which is the second in the place, burnt down the roof of the house where the tanks were stored. He said: “We heard some sound coming from the backyard where the SGL gas tanks are located and were told that workers were carrying out some repairs on the tanks but suddenly we heard an explosion and everybody ran out of the shop.” A team led by the supervisor of Department of Petroleum Resources, DPR, Mr Aboh, which visited the scene sealed off the place. Cross River State Police Command spokesman, DSP Irene Ugbo, said the operators of the gas station will be invited for questioning. Police charge businessman for impersonation By Henry Ojelu THE police have arraigned a businessman, Collins Afuwa, for allegedly parading himself as the Iyase of Ogwashi-Uku, in Aniocha South Local Government Area of Delta State. In a five-count charge filed before the state High Court sitting in Asaba, the police also accused Afuwa of disobedience to lawful order and breach of public peace. One of the charges read: “Collins Uche Afuwah between July 2010 and September 2019 at Ogwashi- Uku and Asaba within the jurisdiction of the High Court presented yourself as the Iyase of Ogwashi- Uku to be a person lawfully installed, crowned and assumed and performed the duties of Iyase Ogwashi-Uku within Ogwashi-Uku and Asaba, Delta State.” Another count reads: “Collins Uche Afuwah between July 2010 and September 2019 at Ogwashi- Uku and Asaba within the jurisdiction of the High Court paraded yourself as the Iyase of Ogwashi-Uku by exercising and discharging the powers and duties of Iyase of Ogwashi-Uku, an act you were restrained from by the Court of Appeal judgement dated July 12, 2010 at appeal no CA /B/94/2009 and Supreme Court judgement dated December 14, 2018 in suit no. SC.55/2011." The offences, according to the police, are punishable under section 484 of the Criminal Code Act Cap 38 laws of the Federation 2004 as applicable in Delta State. When the charges were read in court, the defendant pleaded not guilty to the charges and was granted bail by Justice M. Omovie in the sum of N1 million with two sureties in like sum. The government also expressed its readiness to reopen the nation’s airspace for international flights in ‘a matter of weeks’. Consequently, it said the 10pm to 4pm curfew, limitation on mass gatherings and virtual holding of government meetings remained in place, and noted that in the last month, the number of states with over 1, 000 confirmed cases increased from four to 10 and the FCT. Chairman of the Presidential Task Force, PTF, on COVID-19 and Secretary to the Government of the Federation SGF, Mr Boss Mustapha, who disclosed these during yesterday’s briefing of the taskforce, lamented the increased non-compliance with nonpharmaceutical prevention measures; and lack of enforcement of necessary guidelines issued to preserve lives. He also listed insufficient engagement by some states with the national response; lingering concern about the gap between identified cases and the actual burden of disease; apathy, fatigue and disbelief as factors combining to challenge public enlightenment, compliance and behaviour change. It is, however, important to inform you that the major changes being proposed are aimed at achieving the following: Gradual re-opening of international air flights within established parameters. ‘’Re-opening of rail transportation within established parameters; granting permission to exit classes to resume ahead of examinations; allowing civil servants from Grade Level 12 to resume work; and opening recreational parks for supervised exercises. “After due consideration of the recommendations, Mr. President approved the following: Maintaining the current phase of the National Response to COVID-19 for another four weeks, in line with the modifications reflected in the report; partnering with states and local governments to improve community sensitisation and engagement to the COVID-19 response. ‘’Mandating state authorities and the FCT to enforce nonpharmaceutical guidelines, primarily the use of face masks in public appearance and places; encouraging state governments to collaborate with Local Government Authorities to intensify necessary measures, such as contacttracing, grassroots mobilisation and risk communication; and strengthening of collaboration with other mandate groups at federal/ state levels to harmonise the country’s COVID-19 response on short, medium and long-term basis.’’ International flights, NYSC On his part, the National Coordinator of the PTF, Dr Sani Aliyu, said the task force has asked the aviation ministry to work towards resumption of international flights in weeks. Aliyu added that the management of the National Youth Service Corps, NYSC, had also been told to start working towards resumption in the next phases of the eased lockdown. He said: “The restrictions in the entertainment and education sectors as well as other activities that attract mass gatherings, such as operation of markets and worship centres, remain. “Specific to air transportation, domestic operations have already resumed as well as the railways. For international travel, we have made recommendations to the aviation industry to commence the process for opening international airports, provided all existing international and local prevention guidelines on COVID-19 are in place. “We have modified the advice with regard to the arrival for flights. Passengers arriving at the airports for domestic flights are advised to arrive at least one and a half hours before their flights and three hours before international flights when it is restarted. “There might be requirements for additional infrastructure in some of the airports. What we want to do, and we have made it very clear at the PTF, is we want to reopen as soon as possible but in a safe manner that does not put at risk all the efforts we have made to control this pandemic. "Hopefully, the airports would open in weeks, rather than months. That is what we are looking at.’’ On returning students, Aliyu warned that they should not be tested unless they showed signs of the symptoms of coronavirus. “We do not request for testing before students return to school because the value of a test is when it is being taking, a day after, the test is not valuable, so students should not be tested before they resume. Similarly, the Federal Capital Territory Administration, FCTA, said yesterday it would not hesitate to shut down any school within the territory that violates COVID-19 guidelines recommended for the safety of their students in exit classes who are resuming for their examinations. The Chairman, FCT Ministerial Enforcement Task team on COVID-19 Restrictions, Ikharo Attah, who led the team to inspect some schools within the nation’s capital, stated that the administration could not afford to expose the students to the danger of contracting the virus, and would, therefore, not compromise the guidelines for resumption of the schools. “Any school that fails to comply, we will do everything within our powers to safeguard the students and such schools would likely be shut down through legal processes, while the students will have to write their exams somewhere else, pending when the school complies with the safety guidelines, and those responsible for the school mismanagement will be brought to book,’’ he warned. Alleged Defamation: IGP threatens to sue Sowore By Ikechukwu Nnochiri A BUJA—INSPECTOR- GENERAL of Police, Mohammed Adamu, yesterday threatened to file criminal complaint against Sahara Reporters and its publisher, Mr. Omoyele Sowore, over alleged defamation. The IGP, in a letter signed by his lawyer, Dr. Alex Iziyon, SAN, gave Sowore and Sahara Reporters seven days to retract a report published on August 3, which alleged that he illegally raised funds to build police training school in Nasarawa State. In the letter addressed to the United States of America's address of Sahara Reporters and Sowore, the IGP, aside from demanding for an apology in three national dailies, further asked that N10billion be paid to him as exemplary and general damages. The Sahara Reporters had in the said report, titled, ‘Exclusive: How Nigeria’s Inspector-General of Police, Adamu, Illegally Raised Millions of Naira for Construction of Training School in Nasarawa’, alleged that the the IGP “used his office to unlawfully compel and, in fact, threaten Mobile Police Commanders into generating millions of naira monthly through illegal means for the establishment of a Mopol Training Schol in Endehu, Nasarawa State.”
