DINING PLAN
Three service options are included in resident
dining plans: dine-in, carryout hub, and outpost.
Come in to a dining hall, or visit an outpost for
up to three meals a day, every day, and select
from our wide range of daily menu options.
Dining Dollars are included in the three upgraded
Resident Dining Plans. They are used just like
cash—but bought at a discount! From August 17–
September 11, you can upgrade your dining plan
online: visit dining.umd.edu, select “Account”
in the upper right, log in and follow the prompts.
See more details on the next page.
Safety For us, safety is the new hospitality. As the
current public health crisis continues to unfold, we
will make adjustments so that we can provide the best
possible food and service to the University of Maryland
community. Our service protocols will meet or exceed
University, local, state and federal guidelines for food
service. We want to assure you that with these and other
processes, you will be able to eat well and eat safely while
you are on campus. We are proud that you have put your
trust in us.

FAQ
Why would I want Dining Dollars?
Dining Dollars expand your choices. You can get a foamy
latte, or freshly made grab-and-go sandwiches, salads
and sushi when you aren’t near a dining hall, or essentials
to take back to your room.
These locations take credit and debit cards,
is there an advantage to using Dining Dollars?
Yes! While we absolutely take credit and debit cards
everywhere, you get great extra value with Dining Dollars.
• When you buy Dining Dollars you always
get a discount.
• When you use Dining Dollars you never pay tax.
• Dining Dollars go on your Student Account
and can be included in a Terp Payment Plan.
I already have a dining plan but didn’t
buy Dining Dollars, what can I do?
• Visit dining.umd.edu/online-services
and follow the prompts to upgrade your dining plan.
• You can upgrade to add Dining Dollars to your
Fall Resident Dining Plan anytime between
August 17 and September 11 (and again in the
Spring between January 8 and February 11).

BIOMETRICS
Our three dining halls use biometric entry systems
to ensure secure dining hall access for students with
Resident Dining Plans.
No need to bring your UMD ID card with you to access
the dining halls! Simply wave your hand through the
space above the glass scanner, the system recognizes you,
and the gate opens. You don’t touch anything—not even
the scanner.
Enrollment
Resident students enroll in this system when they arrive
on campus. When you pick up your keys and UMD ID
card, stop by the biometric enrollment station, it only
takes a minute to ensure seamless biometric access to
the dining halls.
For more information email diningplans@umd.edu.

HEALTH & SAFETY
SAFETY IS THE NEW HOSPITALITY
In response to the current COVID-19 public health
crisis, we’ve made significant changes to our operating
procedures to serve you as efficiently and safely as possible.
For example, our team will be wearing face coverings
and gloves, we will be installing physical distancing floor
markers, food will be served by our team members. In
addition, we have decreased seating capacity in the dining
rooms, instituted a reservations system and added specific
opportunities for carry-out as part of your dining plan.
We ask you to help keep your fellow Terps—and our
staff—safe by following these basic guidelines
WE CAN PREVENT THE SPREAD OF CORONAVIRUS 4 EVERYONE AT UMD.

required if you choose to dine in at either The Diner
or South Campus Dining Hall.

time slot is full. If you’re walking past a dining hall and
want to go in for a meal, check your phone, there might
be a seat available—make a reservation and come on in.
We are sure you will find good food whenever you
join us, but to ensure you find your favorite foods
when they’re on the menu, we strongly suggest visiting
nutrition.umd.edu in advance to see what we’re
serving and where.

MENU AND
NUTRITION ONLINE
MENUS
We’re up early in the morning preparing your breakfast—
cereals, eggs, pancakes, bacon, sausage and more.
Enjoy donuts and fresh bagels from Bethesda Bagels,
rich muffins and flaky croissants.
Later in the day, each dining hall offers great lunch and
dinner food served at culinary stations. We use fresh
produce and a wide variety of from-scratch cooking
methods to bring diverse and delicious food to campus.
Themed stops include composed salads, deli sandwiches,
pizza and pasta, grilled classics, comfort food meals, and
Asian favorites. Try the dedicated Vegan Stations; great
flavors without animal-derived ingredients and visit the
Purple Zone where the food is free of the nine most
common allergens.
11
ONLINE MENUS & NUTRITION
Nutrition.umd.edu is your online key to menus,
ingredients and allergens. Visit us online or bring us
up on your smartphone for quick access to dietary and
nutritional information for all resident dining menus.
Menu boards and counter cards in the dining halls and
outpost locations display item names, with appropriate
icons for allergens, and dietary restrictions—but you
might want to know more. The nutrition site gives
detailed information about nutrition, ingredients, and
allergens for all the food on our resident dining menus.
You can even filter the menus for a specific location
by any of the nutrition and dietary icons to view only
the items you want so that you can easily find meals
that fit your needs!
We post menus one week in advance so you can see
what’s in store for you in Maryland Dining!

allergen-free frozen items to heat up in the dedicated
allergen safe microwave next to it.
ALLERGEN-FREE FOOD
AND INGREDIENTS
In addition to regular menu items that work for people
with specific dietary requirements, we keep a long list
of specialty food on hand to give you even more choices:
allergen-free convenience foods supplied in Purple Fridge,
allergen-free menus at Purple Zone, and a stock of
allergen-free ingredients in the kitchen to prepare
custom meals for students with allergies that prevent
them from eating any other options.
