Protect that Balayage Hair Color this Summer

The arrival of summer not only sees more individuals spending time outdoors; several people will also enjoy being in

the pool or ocean as well – often for hours at a time. While spending time in the sun is highly beneficial with regards

to keeping healthy, UV rays, chlorine and seawater can cause your hair to look less than its best – especially if you

have Balayage hair color. Below is some advice regarding how you can protect your beautiful balayage – without

having to hide indoors all summer.

1. Go Easy on the Styling

Any form of heat styling such as blow drying, straightening or curling will heat your hair in much the same way as the

sun. After a short while, these treatments can cause your hair to become rough and lose its color.

Do your best to refrain from using any type of styling tools that generate heat. However, in cases where it’s totally

necessary to blow dry or straighten your hair, consider using some form of heat protection product on it beforehand.

2. Protect your Hair from UV Rays

After having a balayage color treatment, your hair becomes a little more porous than usual and this can cause the

color to fade after spending as little as 15 minutes out in the summer sun.

If you enjoy spending time outdoors during summer, consider wearing a hat or headscarf to protect your hair.

Alternatively, you can spray a protective leave- in conditioner over your hair before heading out into the hot sun.

3. Apply Conditioner before Swimming

Warm summer weather not only means enjoying grilling with friends or family; it often means spending a lot of time

in the ocean or pool as well. When your hair gets wet, its cuticles open up and allow salt or chlorine to enter the hair

shafts. This not only causes your hair to dry out; it will have a negative effect on your balayage treatment as well.

Applying a mask or conditioning product to your hair before jumping into the water will provide your hair with the

protection it needs.

4. Wash your Hair after Swimming

Many individuals make the mistake of just letting their hair dry naturally after they’ve been swimming. However, this

allows the salt and/or chlorine to remain in your hair – which will ultimately cause your balayage to fade

prematurely.

If you aren’t able to wash and condition your hair right after getting out of the water, at least rinse it with clear,

warm water until you arrive home. Thereafter, your hair should be thoroughly washed and conditioned to help keep

it looking great and feeling healthy.

With hair salons in Andover, MA being back in business, it means that you’ll now be able to request appointments

for touching up your balayage or even trying a totally new color combination. If you would like to learn more about
