For those Indigenous students that attend public schools, school districts will engage with First Nations and Indigenous peoples as a part of their Stage 2 plans. Enhanced Health & Safety Measures Schools will continue to be cleaned more frequently, including classrooms and high touch areas like door knobs, toilet seats, keyboards and desks. Other changes include: • Organizing students into learning groups • Increased spacing between students in classrooms • More individual and smaller group activities • Limitations on assemblies and other large gatherings • Parent Responsibilities • Monitor your child daily for symptoms • Don’t send your child to school if they are sick. Anyone who is sick will not be allowed in school • Encourage your child to minimize physical contact with their friends Student Responsibilities • Wash your hands frequently, including before coming to school and before and after eating and breaks • You will have access to hand sanitizer when hand washing is not available • Label your personal items and do not share them Wearing Masks Students and staff are not required to wear masks in schools. Wearing a mask is a personal choice that will always be respected The Provincial Health Officer (PHO) and the British Columbia Centre for Disease Control (BCCDC) advise that masks are not recommended for use by young children. In young children, masks can be irritating and can lead to increased touching of the face and eyes. For older students and staff, non-medical masks will be provided upon request for use in situations where the person is interacting with someone from outside of their learning group and cannot maintain physical distance for an extended period of time. This includes riding the bus to school where a student may be sitting next to a person outside of their household or learning group Riding the Bus The BCCDC public health guidelines for schools include the following recommendations for student transportation on school buses: • Buses should be cleaned and disinfected in accordance with BCCDC guidelines • Buses should be loaded from back to front and offloaded from front to back • If space is available, each student should have their own seat unless sharing with a member of their household • Middle and secondary school students should wear non-medical masks, • No student should be required to wear a mask if they do not tolerate it • Schools and school districts can consider a transparent barrier to separate the driver from the students • Schools and school districts should use consistent and assigned seating where possible, • Schools and school districts should keep up to date passenger lists to share with public health if contact tracing needs to occur Outside the Classroom/Extracurricular Activities Extracurricular activities in middle and secondary schools including sports, arts (including band and choir) or special interest clubs can occur if physical distance can be maintained between members of different learning groups and reduced physical contact can be practiced by those within the same learning group. Health and safety plans developed by school districts and independent schools will determine how extracurricular activities will be implemented at schools. Inter-school events like competitions, tournaments and festivals should not occur at this time. These events will be re-evaluated mid-fall. Work Placements & Apprenticeships School districts and independent school authorities will assess and determine if it is safe for students to remain on work placements and apprenticeships. For work placements that cannot continue in person, districts and schools will determine if alternate methods to continue learning or accumulate volunteer hours for work placements are possible. Students are encouraged to talk to their teachers about work placements and apprenticeships School Meal Programs School districts with existing meal programs will continue to work with community partners to provide meal support to families in need, in alignment with current public health guidelines. Keep updated by visiting www.sd8.bc.ca SD8 bus registration, apply now! Bus registration for 2020/2021 school year is now open! The deadline for registration is September 4, 2020. School starts Thursday, September 10th, 2020. All riders from Kindergarten to Grade 12 need to register annually, in order to have a seat on the bus. Seats are limited and only registered riders may use the bus service. Due to space limitations some routes may have a waitlist. It is very important to maintain up-to-date rider lists for drivers, especially in regards to contact tracing during the pandemic. Please register only if you will be a continuous rider (3-4 days per week). Please note that due to COVID-19, transportation services may change (i.e. route alterations, rider capacity etc.) and will be communicated as soon as available on the District website. Further information regarding COVID protocols for riding the bus will be posted on the District website. Online registration is now available at http://sd8.bc.ca. Changing student demographics requires the Transportation Department conduct a review of the bus routes each year, and make adjustments where required. Similar to previous years, space on a school bus for the 2020/21 school year will be allocated first to eligible riders. The online registration form and information regarding your catchment school website is available on the District website. Once approved by the Transportation Department you will receive a confirmation email with details of Bus route, stop time and location for your student. Registration forms are also available at your catchment school and from school bus drivers. Please read and discuss the Procedure and Code of Conduct with your student before you accept the expectations for school bus transportation. COVID-19 science & children According to current worldwide data, COVID-19 has a very low infection rate in people 19 years old and under, and especially low in children under the age of 10. Serological tests have confirmed that in BC, less than 1% of all children tested have been COVID-19 positive. Studies show that most COVID-19 cases in children originate from symptomatic adult family members, not from peers. Even in family bubbles, adults appear to be the primary spreaders of the virus. Children who do test positive for COVID- 19 usually have milder symptoms, such as a low-grade fever, dry cough, and gastrointestinal issues. What has BC learned from the reopening of schools in other places? Due to widespread, worldwide school closures, there are few studies on the effects of COVID-19 transmission in school settings. • In places that have resumed in-class instruction, children do not appear to be the primary spreaders of COVID-19. • In schools where there were confirmed cases, there was typically minimal spreading beyond the initial case. Studies have shown that closing schools and child care facilities has significant negative mental health and socioeconomic impacts on vulnerable children. At this time, it is recommended that only people with symptoms or people otherwise identified by a health professional should tested be for COVID-19. This includes children. Daily screenings start at home. Ask these questions: • Does your child have the symptoms of a common cold, influenza, COVID-19, or other infectious respiratory disease? • Has your child been outside Canada in the last 14 days? • Has your child been identified as a close contact of a confirmed case or Navigational lock closure Navigational lock at the Hugh Keenleyside Dam will be closed on August 25 outbreak?
