Class of 2024 Co-Valedictorians 

Carrying forward the power of community nurtured at Selkirk 

College into the broader world is the ambition of the Class of 

2024 co-valedictorians. Convocation 2024 takes place at the Castlegar 

Campus on May 30 with two different ceremonies that celebrate 

the graduating class. Contemporary Music & Technology 

Program graduate Jay Porteous and Recreation, Fish & Wildlife 

Program graduate Holly Macris have been chosen to represent 

their peers. 

This year’s graduating class includes 1,033 learners across all 

college programs who will receive a credential. Convocation day 

provides a moment to reflect on accomplishments and set sights 

on bright futures. 

“It’s easy to see the problems in the world as something too 

big to have an impact on, but if everyone makes a small change 

then we have the collective power to make a big difference,” says 

Macris. “People come from all over the world to attend Selkirk 

College and I really believe that our graduating class has this ability. 

If we can take what our college experience has given us in 

whatever area we are in and work to make a difference, then we 

can have a really big impact.” 

Complete with a little rock n’ roll snarl that goes along with 

her educational pathway of choice, Porteous is confident her fellow 

graduates are ready to make a raucous impact in their budding 

careers.

on the Castlegar Campus, Macris grew up in rural Batemans Bay 

on Australia’s South Coast. A star student who pours energy into 

her own work and helps boost those around her, Macris was recognized 

by faculty for her team approach to learning. 

Having returned to post-secondary in her late-20s to receive 

tangible hands-on education, Macris has already landed a job 

with the Department of Fisheries & Oceans based out of Whitehorse, 

Yukon where she is an aquatics technician doing work that 

includes sonar monitoring in areas near the Arctic Circle. She 

encourages all fresh college alumni to embrace lifelong learning. 

Selkirk College opened its doors to regional post-secondary 

learning in September 1966 with a class of 458 charter students 

and the first graduation ceremony took place in the spring of 

1968. Since that time, thousands have graduated into successful 

careers from a wide range of programs that have evolved over the 

decades.

The Broom Busters Program 

The Central Kootenay Invasive 

Species Society (CKISS) 

proudly announces the launch 

of the Kootenay Broom Busters 

Program, a pilot program 

aimed at harnessing community 

engagement to combat the 

spread of invasive Scotch broom 

in the Kootenays. 

The Broom Busters Program 

is a community-driven initiative 

facilitated by CKISS, aimed at 

engaging Kootenay residents in hands-on action to mitigate 

the impacts of invasive Scotch broom on local ecosystems 

and wildfire risks. During a Broom Bash, volunteers come 

together to mechanically remove invasive Scotch broom infestations 

from their community, fostering a collaborative effort 

to address environmental challenges. Participants receive 

valuable hands-on learning experiences about the detrimental 

effects of invasive plants on ecosystems and economies, gaining 

insights into proper removal techniques and the importance 

of timing in cutting broom. 

Supported by the Regional District of Central Kootenay 

(RDCK) Local Conservation Fund, CKISS is launching the 

Broom Buster program across designated areas within the 

RDCK, with the goal of educating and inspiring residents to 

become community ambassadors. These ambassadors will be 

empowered to drive change and foster a deeper connection to 

the land, their neighborhoods, and each other, ensuring the 

program’s continued success and expansion. 

The inaugural Broom Busters event is scheduled for Saturday, 

May 25, 2024, from 10:30 AM to 12:30 PM. CKISS is 

partnering with the Creston Rod and Gun Club to tackle a 

Scotch broom infestation on the East Shore of Kootenay Lake, 

between Destiny Bay and Sanca, near the ‘Glass House’. You 

can sign up to volunteer or get more information on the event 

ckiss.ca/events. Two other Broom Bash events are planned in 

June in Proctor and the Nelson North Shore area. 

“Joining the Kootenay Broom Busters as a volunteer offers 

numerous compelling reasons to get involved. By participating 

in Scotch broom removal efforts, you’ll directly contribute 

to preserving native habitats and restoring biodiversity in our 

community. Additionally, your involvement will help enhance 

wildlife habitats, reduce the risk of wildfires, and improve 

outdoor recreational opportunities for hunters, naturalists, 

and outdoor enthusiasts. Volunteering as a Broom Buster 

also allows you to promote environmental stewardship, gain 

valuable hands-on educational experiences, foster community 

involvement and collaboration, and make a tangible impact on 

the health of our ecosystems. Don’t miss this chance to be part 

of a meaningful initiative that benefits both present and future

The key to success with transplants is 

selecting healthy young plants and handling 

them properly. 

Transplants should be stocky and compact 

with healthy-looking foliage. Green 

foliage should be a rich dark green, not 

pale or yellow, and free of spots that 

might indicate disease. Colored foliage 

-- as on coleus, for instance -- should be 

free of discoloration or signs of disease. 

Wilted foliage may mean the plant needs 

water; it can also be a sign of root rot or 

other disease problems. 

Though it’s nice to see annuals or 

perennials in flower, the best transplants 

are those without flowers or fruits. Right 

after planting, transplants need to concentrate 

on establishing a large, strong 

root system. If they’ve already switched 

from vegetative growth to flower or fruit 

production, they will not be able to do 

this and will struggle through the season 

on an inadequate root system. 

At transplanting time, handle plants 

carefully to avoid damaging their roots 

and stems. If plants were grown in peat 

pots, soak the pots thoroughly before 

planting, and make sure the edge of the 

pot is completely covered -- if the lip is 

left exposed, it will wick water away from 

plant roots. 

Plants in multicompartment containers 

should be well watered and removed 

from their cells with care and transferred 

quickly into the garden so their roots 

don’t have a chance to dry out. All transplants 

should be watered in after transplanting 

so dry soil around them doesn’t 

pull water away from their roots. 

Often it isn’t enough to just stick the 

plants in the ground and water -- newly 

set transplants may need protection 

against insects, frost and wind.
