THE GRADUATE 100 

WELCOME TO THE BRITISH GRADUATE 100 AWARDS 

Our motivation to launch the Graduate 100 was simple; to highlight the next generation of future leaders 

and create a unique profile of the talent and academic excellence that exists within Britain's universities. One 

of the key features of the Graduate 100 had to be that every student is put forward by their own head of 

department. The process was challenging but highly engaging - over 13,000 students and 80 universities took 

part from a range of departments nationwide, from the Law School at Oxford to Fashion at Central Saint 

Martins. The result was the first and largest initiative of its kind that actively engaged universities 

and allowed them to put forward their highest achievers. 

The financial crises of 2008 set a profoundly challenging economic climate for employers, universities and 

graduates alike. Over the last few years, students and graduates have faced new challenges, including a 

surplus of graduates and an increasingly competitive jobs market. Graduate 100 sends out a powerful 

message throughout Britain on the valued contribution that graduates are making. It also provides a positive 

and empowering message to all students that their universities are doing all they can to promote graduate 

excellence and keep graduates at the forefront of employers’ minds. 

A key part of this initiative has been Where Graduates Want to Work, a fresh take on the standard perception 

survey. The results have been exciting as this survey reflects the views of the most outstanding students put 

forward by their very own universities – the Graduate 100 nominees. Enabling students to have their say 

when it comes to their future working life is critical in today’s race for effective employer branding. Where 

Graduates Want to Work is an effective tool for leading organisations to understand how they are 

perceived and where top graduates want to start their career. 

We would like to thank the for providing us with the opportunity to do this project and 

all the companies who have shown commitment to the pursuit of excellence 

and enabled us to launch the Graduate 100 initiative successfully.

I am delighted to support the Graduate 100 and Where Graduates Want to Work initiative. 

The Graduate 100 is an important and unique initiative that plays a very significant role in helping 

appreciate and celebrate Britain’s highest achieving recent graduates. It is inspiring to see these 

individuals rise to prominence despite heavy odds, and wonderful that universities 

have been so proactive in putting them forward. 

Fresh talent is the backbone to our economy and the lifeline to any leading and enterprising 

organisation. Given the current difficulties that graduate face it is increasingly important to 

recognise the role that enterprising graduates play, and by celebrating their achievements we 

will inspire more young people to strive to achieve their best. 

High achievers want to work for organisations that exhibit excellence in recruiting, 

supporting and developing talent. I am delighted to see that Where Graduates Want to Work

METHODOLOGY 

The Graduate 100 was open to final 

year students. The Ones to Watch was 

open to undergraduate students in their 

penultimate year. Students could only 

be nominated by their universities, with 

an opportunity for course lecturers to 

provide reasons behind the nomination. 

The specific criteria for the Graduate 

100 vary based on the categories, 

however, technical knowledge, 

achievements, final year project, 

creativity, contribution and the ability to 

act as an ambassador for the subject 

were taken into consideration. The 

Graduate 100 are also nominated for 

awards under their specific category at 

the British Graduate 100 Awards. The 

overall Where Graduates Want to Work 

and category specific Where Graduates 

Want to work lists is determined by 

number of votes. All nominees for the 

Graduate 100 placed their votes during 

the nomination process.

Over 13,000 students across Britain have entered for 

this year's landmark Graduate 100 initiative. As part of 

the nomination process, students were asked to 

highlight the companies that they would most like to 

work for. Where Graduates Want To Work is a unique 

survey that goes beyond the standard perceptionsurvey 

format by canvassing the views of those 

students deemed exceptional in their skills and 

qualities by the universities themselves - the nominees 

for the Graduate 100. Students were asked to consider

list is being revealed after months of anticipation. This 

is the first time that a survey of this kind has been

Khalid Darr has been involved in 

philanthropic activities since 1999 and is 

currently involved in the set up of a 

Virtual Hospital, an organization which 

will drastically alter the healthcare 

provision for the poor by linking 

remote villages in the third world, to 

doctors and specialists based across the 

globe. Khalid is also currently Chairman 

of the international Power 100 Brand 

which is now in over 23 countries and 

includes the development of the UAE 

Power 100, China Power 100 and Russia 

Power 100. Through Power 100 Khalid 

has developed an effective fast track 

into the very highest level of networks 

and has earned himself an enviable 

‘Black Book’ of contacts both within the 

UK & internationally.

James Caan is CEO of private equity firm 

Hamilton Bradshaw and has been building 

and selling businesses since 1985, 

including the Alexander Mann Group and 

Humana International. 2007 saw James 

joining the panel of BBC2's Dragons' Den, 

investing his own capital in start-ups on 

national television. James was recently 

appointed the new co-chair on the Ethnic 

Minority Business Taskforce, which

Ian has held several senior positions in the

much anticipated Graduate 100 list is the first of its kind 

highlighting a selection of Britain's highest achieving graduates. 

Comprising of the top 10 graduates under 10 distinct categories, 

the Graduate 100 includes innovative thinkers, entrepreneurs, 

and cutting edge designers. Graduate 100 identifies individuals 

who are not just achieving the best grades, but those who have

Career Paths: On completion of the Program, we 

work to find a position in the Group that takes 

advantage of the broad experience gained during the 

rotational Program. Fellows are likely to work in a 

client management or planning role, although some 

work on the creative side of an agency. Career paths 

will vary and will depend on the particular skills and 

aptitude of each individual and the companies 

selected for the Program rotation.

About the Fellowship Program 

To meet changing client needs, WPP has developed a 

Fellowship Program. Its aim: to develop high-calibre 

management talent with experience across a range of 

marketing disciplines. The Program is unique in its 

multidisciplinary approach and is designed to 

complement the recruitment activities of individual 

WPP companies. 

We are offering a number of Fellowships. The 

Fellowship comprises three one-year rotations with 

WPP companies, with each rotation chosen on the 

basis of the individual’s interests and the Group’s 

needs. The multi-disciplinary rotation is unique in the 

industry and grooms future leaders in the range of 

marketing needs of our clients. 


We are looking for people who are intellectually 

curious, motivated by the prospect of delivering highquality 

communications services to their clients, are 

committed to marketing, take a rigorous and creative 

approach to problem-solving and function well in a 

flexible, loosely structured work environment. All 

applicants should have completed an undergraduate 

degree (class 2:1 or above) or equivalent. Other than 

that, there are no set qualifications or criteria and we 

welcome applications from candidates irrespective of 

age, gender or background..
