Reston Chorale Presents
‘King David’
By Michael McKee
War, shame, giants, witchcraft,
sorrow, and none of it had
anything to do with
Shakespeare or a royal wedding.
Last Saturday, April 30, the audience
that went to see and hear “King David” performed
by the Reston Chorale were in for a
real treat.
Featuring a little singing shepherd boy, a
narrator, an orchestra, three outstanding
soloists, a slide show and the Chorale, this
dramatic and powerful symphonic psalm by
the French composer Arthur Honegger was
a huge success. Performed with the
Amadeus Orchestra and led by Artistic Director
David Lang at the Vienna Presbyterian
Church, this was a drama that often
had “driving rhythms and often discordant
harmonies,” yet it also had great moments
of romantic beauty. For example, King
David’s ego and lust for Bathsheba was followed
by his sorrowful “Psalm of Penitence”
where the King cries out “Pity me Lord,”
then lamenting that “In Evil I Was Born.”
Following the lives of Saul, David and
Salomon through music gave the audience
both an enjoyable evening of entertainment
and a fine and meaningful education.
