Deborah Miles was helping her
daughter’s Girl Scout troop sell
cookies about four years ago,
when a unique opportunity presented
itself. One of their customers mentioned
an event called Empty Bowls, which
raised money for local food banks. Miles
agreed, and what started as two troops four
years ago was 10 troops Friday night at St.
John Neumann Catholic in Reston.
“It’s a win-win situation, the girls love
helping out, Giving Circle of HOPE seems
to like having us here and the people come
and enjoy being greeted by friendly young
ladies,” said Miles, who coordinated more
than 70 girls.
The Girl Scouts helped serve drinks, clean
tables, sell tickets, greet diners and serve
desserts at Empty Bowls. Almost 600 people
attended the event.
DONORS WALKED IN and could choose
a handmade bowl from hundreds of bowls
made by local artisans to take home with
them. After they chose their bowl, they
headed into the church’s parish center to
enjoy soup donated by local restaurants,
bread donated by the Great Harvest Bread
Company and desserts.
The Amphora Diner and Culinary Insider
of Herndon, Café Montmartre, Clyde’s, Jasmine
Café and Vinifera of Reston, the Hard
Times Café in Fairfax and the Hay-Adams
Hotel in Washington, D.C. provided the
soups for the evening.
Meredith Hester’s mother was one of the
volunteers for the event, and her father
John Hester’s company was one of the sponsors,
but she had never been to an event
herself, until this year.
