GMP Certification: An assurance for the food you consume
GMP or Good manufacturing practice is a set of instructions or the protocol which are to be
followed during the manufacturing process of pharmaceutical as well as a non-pharmaceutical
process. In short, it can be said that GMP Certification is a basic guideline of quality assurance
given by the manufacturer to his consumers. These guidelines, in India, are laid on by Food and
Drug Administration (FDA). Being a GMP certified company means that the products of that
company meet the minimum GMP standards and are safe to use for the consumer.
Origin of GMP Certification
It was not before 1906 when the American author and journalist Upton Sinclair wrote a novel
called ‘The Jungle’ which exposed the unsanitary meat packaging plants and thus increased
public awareness.
It was finally in the year 1968 that World Health Organization (WHO) drafted the first text of
GMP guidelines. Since then 100+ countries have adopted the GMP provisions of WHO into their
national medicine laws. But the WHO GMP continues to be called the basis of these
certification schemes and these are strictly followed by the UN agencies for their health-care
programs.
Principle of GMP Certification
One of the main aims of GMP is to ensure consistent production of high-quality medicines
which could meet the international standard of healthcare.
To judge the quality of material used and whether they are relevant to the purpose of the
consumer.
To suggest and make the required changes in the manufacturing process.
Why it is important to be GMP certification?
Assurance of quality and safety is really important for today’s consumers as it is really
important for him that the product he\she is taking is not harmful to him or his loved ones.
Now here, the GMP certified sign, work as that quality-assurance. Thus, it has become really
important to get GMP certified.
But the question arises what if a manufacturer does not follow GMP Certification in India
guidelines? Well, in that case, that the product manufactured by that company will be
considered “adulterated” under the law and it simply conveys, to the consumer, that there is a
good the possibility that there is something wrong with the drug and it’s strictly up to the
consumer to buy it or not. These are just a few of the main advantages that any company that
is going for the gmp certification would be able to enjoy. You should make sure that you are
aware of them and how it will help your company if you were to go with this application
process.
Another important reason in going for a GMP certified product is that poor quality medicines or
edible items may contain toxic substances that may be added intentionally or unintentionally
which can be harmful to your health.
