The summer staff application goes live in October.

MY FAVORITE THINGS

FROM THE DESK OF SCOTT BROSMAN

In a usual year, we would be reflecting on wonderful memories from summer

camp, except COVID-19 changed the world. Summer 2020 will forever be

remembered as the summer of no camp. It was heartbreaking for everyone,

especially those Torchbearer campers who missed their final year as campers.

I feel your pain and understand the disappointment. What began for

me as a one-summer job in 1976 turned into the best ride of a career you

could imagine. Forty-four summers of YMCA camp – most of them here

at Tecumseh. That first summer was a life changing experience for me.

“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.

Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in

heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden

is light.” Matthew 11:28

Knowing I will be retiring at year’s

end, people ask me what I will

miss. In no particular order, here

are some of the things I will miss:

I can do this!

Seeing a camper move up a swim

level in one week. Riding a horse

for the first time ever. Jumping off

the high dive while everyone in

the pool cheers for you. Making it

through the entire week at camp

when homesickness seemed like the

end on Sunday night. Performing

in Brazilian dance clinic at closing

campfire to 700 enthusiastic fans.

The best friends…ever

Campers and staff who have

met the best and longest running

friends of their lives.

Tears of joy

Torchbearers at closing campfires.

Campers’ hugs and tears at Saturday

morning checkout. Summer staff on

closing banquet night. International

staff returning home with lifelong

memories of their summer in the US.

Amazing creativity

a Brave boy lunch table that suddenly

transforms into a musical.

Random conversations/quotes

with 8 year olds

“You get to live here all year long!”

“I miss my dog more than my

brother.”

“Dinner was great, we had something

new. I think it’s called meatloaf.”

Watching a new generation of

leaders grow and flourish

A Brave-aged camper seemingly overnight

becomes a Torchbearer, then

just as quickly turns into a counselor;

blink again and they are arriving as a

first year day camper parent. Teachers,

physicians, lawyers, journalist,

coaches and some of the world’s best

parents, I get to see them all grow

and mature summer after summer.

It is all the little things, really.

It has been an honor and a privilege,
