38DAIJIWORLD Magazine | September 2020was hailed for heeding her conscience.However, I felt that it wasmore of a conscientious decisionbecause she knew that she hadzero administrative experience.The Damocles Sword of Boforswould also be hanging over her.So she made a wise and practicaldecision to step aside.In more recent times the Congressmade two huge blunders.When the time came for a newRashtrapati, they should havemade MMS, the venerable statesman,the President. Instead theychose Pranab Mukherjee, whoshould have been made PrimeMinister then. But the Gandhiparivar was always wary of Pranabda,because he had the intelligenceand political acumen toupstage the Gandhis. And the latterdid not want to lose their personalfiefdom, the Congress party.The second blunder was whenRahul, the brash babalog, tore upan ordinance passed by the Government.That was a direct insultto the Government led by MMS.Had MMS then resigned, or if Pranabdahad become Prime Minister,the course of Indian politicswould have been very differenttoday.As a result the country is nowcaught in a cleft stick between theGandhi parivar on the left and theSangh parivar on the right. Thenation is the poorer for it.At the CWC meeting Rahulbaba indignantly objected to theletter writers doing what they didwhen his mother was sick; eventhough one of the main votaries,Gulab Nabi Azad, was at pains tosay that the letter was deliveredonly after he had ascertained thatSonia was fit. Sycophants thenjumped into the fray accusing theletter writers of collusion withthe BJP, resulting in Rahul actuallyhaving to phone Kapil Sibal tosay that he had not done so. Butthe smokescreen had been raised,no matter who actually lit the fire,or now, the pyre of the Congress!The CWC meeting has raisedmore questions than it has answered.If Sonia has been unwell,and for quite some time; then whyis she clinging to the chair? Howdoes she justify her being so easilyconvinced by her sycophanticdurbar to continue in office?It smells of hypocrisy. The samegoes for the sibling duo of Rahul-Priyanka.Why do they makepublic statements saying that anon-Gandhi should lead the Congress,and then act in a way thatgives quite the opposite message?When the Congress was inpower at the Centre for ten years,Rahul could have easily becomea minister, and learnt the art ofadministration. He also seldomparticipated in parliamentary debates.He wanted power withoutthe attendant responsibility. Thisis obvious from his behaviour atthe CWC meeting, including hissilence on not being the next CongressPresident, if and when hismother relinquishes office.I always held MMS in great esteem.But now he too had joinedthe bandwagon of sycophants,most of whom are half his age. Heshould graciously withdraw fromactive politics. Only then will historybe kinder to him as he hassometimes stated.Sycophants insist that it is theGandhi family that is the glue thatbinds the Congress together. Thisspeaks very poorly of the party.It is also a whopping lie. Soniawas anathema to Mulayam SinghYadav, which is why he refusedto support her claim to form agovernment in 1998/99. She wasalso anathema to Sharad Pawar,who together with Purno Sangmaand Tariq Anwar broke away toform the National Congress Party(NCP). Sangma’s son Conrad, hasnow aligned with the BJP in Meghalaya.In Andhra, a Congressbastion, YS Reddy’s son Jagmohanalso chose to cut his umbilicalcord with the Congress, as didMamta Banerjee in Bengal. EarlierAjit Jogi, former Chief Ministerof Chhattisgarh had also quit theCongress.Ironically Jogi, Sangma andReddy are all Christians. Thisgives the lie to another canard ofthe Sangh parivar that all Christiansare lackeys of the Congress,and that Sonia is a plant of theVatican to convert India to Christianity!More recently young stars likePriyanka Chaturvedi joined theShiv Sena and Jyotiraditya Scindiathe BJP. Both have been rewardedwith the membership ofthe Rajya Sabha. It is obvious thatthe Gandhi’s cannot recognizethe talent in others, precisely becauseof the lack of wisdom thatthey suffer from. Far from beingthe glue, the Gandhis are actuallythe sticky point for many otherswho share the left-centrist visionof the founders of the grand oldparty.

What will betheir political future? Will theybe content to play second fiddleto the incompetent Gandhi parivar,or will they look for greenerpastures?Will Sharad Pawar, the wilyold fox, who outwitted the BJPin Maharashtra, extend thema welcoming hand to make theNCP a national alternative to theBJP? Will other prominent fencesitters like Abhishekh ManuSinghvi and the Chidambramsalso jump ship? Time will tell.Watch this space, for in the Congressthere is place only for sycophants;and its not funny.The views are personal.
