Gold medal for green pipeline<br />

The c<strong>on</strong>structi<strong>on</strong> of a gas pipeline to supply 2014 Winter Olympic Games venues is setting new<br />

standards for envir<strong>on</strong>mental management in Russia, with an innovative use of directi<strong>on</strong>al drilling and<br />

microtunnelling affording maximum protecti<strong>on</strong> for <strong>the</strong> <strong>Black</strong> <strong>Sea</strong> coastal ecosystem.<br />

The 177 Km Dzhubga – Lazarevskoye –<br />

sochi Pipeline is part of <strong>the</strong> infrastructure<br />

being developed by <strong>the</strong> Russian<br />

Government in preparati<strong>on</strong> for <strong>the</strong><br />

2014 Winter Olympics, and is intended<br />

to reduce <strong>the</strong> energy deficiency <strong>on</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> Caucasian coast of <strong>the</strong> <strong>Black</strong> sea.<br />

When complete, its transport capacity of<br />

3.8 billi<strong>on</strong> cubic metres per annum (Bcm/a)<br />

will ensure gas supply to Olympic venues<br />

in <strong>the</strong> mountain area of sochi, as well as<br />

<strong>the</strong> many resorts operating in <strong>the</strong> regi<strong>on</strong>.<br />

A large comp<strong>on</strong>ent of <strong>the</strong> 530 mm<br />

diameter pipeline will be offshore, with a<br />

159.9 km secti<strong>on</strong> located in <strong>the</strong> <strong>Black</strong> sea<br />

approximately 4.5 km from <strong>the</strong> Dzhubga to<br />

sochi coastline. Landfalls for <strong>the</strong> pipeline<br />

are located in <strong>the</strong> vicinity of Dzhubga,<br />

Novomikhailovka, tuapse and Kudepsta.<br />

Gazprom will own and operate <strong>the</strong> pipeline,<br />

while stroygazm<strong>on</strong>tazh has been<br />

c<strong>on</strong>tracted for c<strong>on</strong>structi<strong>on</strong>. C<strong>on</strong>structi<strong>on</strong><br />

work <strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong> Dzhubga – Lazarevskoye<br />

– sochi Pipeline began in september<br />

2009, and is scheduled for completi<strong>on</strong> in<br />

June 2010. <strong>the</strong> c<strong>on</strong>structi<strong>on</strong> process has<br />

required detailed planning and c<strong>on</strong>siderable<br />

technical expertise, as <strong>the</strong> route<br />

traverses difficult and varied terrain.<br />

hdd safeguards <strong>Black</strong> <strong>Sea</strong> coast<br />

On land, <strong>the</strong> pipeline must negotiate<br />

large changes in elevati<strong>on</strong> and steep<br />

rock formati<strong>on</strong>s. Accordingly, horiz<strong>on</strong>tal<br />

directi<strong>on</strong>al drilling (HDD) has been used<br />

to install <strong>the</strong> pipeline in <strong>the</strong>se areas.<br />

In additi<strong>on</strong>, <strong>the</strong> <strong>Black</strong> sea coast is part<br />

of <strong>the</strong> sochi Nati<strong>on</strong>al Park and <strong>on</strong>e of <strong>the</strong><br />

most carefully c<strong>on</strong>served ecosystems in<br />

Russia. to avoid harming local wildlife,<br />

HDD rig in acti<strong>on</strong> <strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Black</strong> <strong>Sea</strong> shore crossing.<br />

pipeline installati<strong>on</strong> was scheduled to<br />

take into account <strong>the</strong> life cycle of native<br />

fauna. HDD was used to install <strong>the</strong> shore<br />

approaches near tuapse and Kudepsta,<br />

fur<strong>the</strong>r minimising disrupti<strong>on</strong> to this fragile<br />

coastal envir<strong>on</strong>ment. According to a<br />

Gazprom spokespers<strong>on</strong>, this is <strong>the</strong> first<br />

time that HDD has been used in a shore<br />

approach in Russia.<br />

<strong>the</strong> use of HDD not <strong>on</strong>ly helped preserve<br />

<strong>the</strong> coastal ecosystem, but also<br />

allowed <strong>the</strong> pipe to negotiate <strong>the</strong> steep<br />

coastal cliffs. While ultimately successful,<br />

engineers working <strong>on</strong> this process were<br />

forced to use innovati<strong>on</strong> to overcome a<br />

serious technical challenge.<br />

A Gazprom spokespers<strong>on</strong> said “During<br />

directi<strong>on</strong>al drilling, <strong>the</strong> c<strong>on</strong>structi<strong>on</strong> team<br />

faced <strong>the</strong> problem of mud disappearing<br />

into natural cavities or ‘voids’ in <strong>the</strong> rocks.<br />

<strong>the</strong> team found a way out by filling<br />

<strong>the</strong> voids with a cement-c<strong>on</strong>crete soluti<strong>on</strong>.<br />

After solidificati<strong>on</strong>, drilling was able<br />

to c<strong>on</strong>tinue.”<br />

In additi<strong>on</strong> to HDD, microtunnelling was<br />

used to install <strong>the</strong> pipeline at all river<br />

crossings, which offered fur<strong>the</strong>r envir<strong>on</strong>mental<br />

protecti<strong>on</strong>.<br />

<strong>the</strong> decisi<strong>on</strong> to c<strong>on</strong>struct a gas pipeline<br />

<strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong> seabed will also reduce<br />

<strong>the</strong> need for c<strong>on</strong>structi<strong>on</strong> <strong>on</strong> industrial,<br />

Manoeuvring pipe into place.<br />

agricultural and forest lands. While making<br />

<strong>the</strong> project more expensive, <strong>the</strong>se<br />

various envir<strong>on</strong>mental protecti<strong>on</strong> measures<br />

were c<strong>on</strong>sidered by Gazprom to be<br />

more than worthwhile, and a company<br />

spokespers<strong>on</strong> was able to report that all<br />

works were c<strong>on</strong>ducted without impacting<br />

<strong>the</strong> surrounding landscape.<br />
