improve the book both graphically and contextually. Designed to be a home study course in
celestial navigation , the book takes you from the very basics of how to use a sextant to the most
advanced calculations. The beauty of celestial navigation is the self reliance the skill provides
sailors at sea. If you have a reliable time piece and a way to check time with a battery powered
shortwave radio, you can determine your position on your own anywhere at sea. So, if you are
days from landfall and struck by lightning, which shorts out all of your electronics, you can still
make harbor safely and in a timely way using only the sun, moon and stars as your guide.Celestial
navigation also links us with ancient mariners who first sailed across oceans and created the
world's discovery and trading routes. These intrepid sailors were intimately familiar with the natural
world around them and the significance in the earth's movement in the solar system and galaxy.
Instead of sailing with heads down staring at LED screens, they sailed with eyes uplift ed to the
sky, which is not a bad way to see the world. Celestial navigation is not hard. Using Burch's book
as a guide, you will learn how to take and calculate noon sights, morning and afternoon sun sights,
twilight moon sights and the classic dawn and evening star sights. You'll figure out how to use a
nautical almanac and sight reductions tables so you can make the simple calculations. You will
