Board Welcomes New Members
Archie W. Bates was born and raised in Chicago,
where he earned undergraduate and
graduate degrees from Chicago State University.
In 1982 he earned his doctorate in education
from the University of Southern California.
In his 30year career with the Department
of Defense Dependents Schools
(DoDDS), he worked overseas in such assignments
as a classroom educator, school administrator
and Assistant Superintendent
and Superintendent of schools in Japan, Germany,
the Netherlands, Belgium, Spain, Portugal,
Italy and Turkey. In September 2008
he retired, and with his wife of 41 years,
Archie W. Bates
Twila, moved to Tucson. They have one son, Terrance, who with his
wife, Tamara and their two children live in Tennessee. Archie's interests
include travel, observation & study of wildlife, learning about diverse
peoples and their cultures, antique collecting and painting.
Archie believes that human resources are the greatest assets of any organization.
It is his assertion that "leadership" is deined more by situation
than by position and is paired with what he considers to be his
"irst assignment" the empowerment of individuals to grow, become,
and maintain a sense of selfworth, while achieving individual and organizational
goals. He has chosen to focus on Mobile Meals and we welcome
him to the Board.
Linda Tansik
Linda S. Tansik joined
the Board of Directors in
June and has already
been an integral part of
the Finance Committee.
Born and raised in South
Texas, she earned her
Bachelor of Arts from the
University of Texas, Austin,
and her MBA from
the University of Arizona.
A CPA since 1990, Linda
retired from Research
Corporation Technolo
gies, Inc. in 2008 after serving for more than 20
years as Corporate Controller and Treasurer.
Since her retirement in May 2008, she has volunteered
her time by serving on several boards including
Catholic Community Services, Catholic
Foundation for the Diocese of Tucson, and St. Michael’s
Parish Day School Board of Trustees. “I am
very proud to join Mobile Meals of Tucson as a
Board member and will work to help Mobile Meals
fulill its Mission Statement.” Welcome, Linda!
Jerry Stiles has driven for Mobile Meals for 28 years and has decided to take a break to help babysit his new great grandson,
Jonivan. Jerry knows so many of our clients well and fondly remembers two special clients who died recently – even a client’s
service dog, Honey! Over the last 28 years, he’s delivered several times each week to clients all over Tucson, picking
up meals at St. Joseph’s and St. Mary’s Hospitals, University Medical Center, Kino, Tucson Medical Center and HealthSouth.
He will be greatly missed.
Jerry is definitely a longterm kind of guy. He’s been married to his wife, Esther, for 61 years, retired from the U.S. Air Force
after 20 years, and promptly went to work with the Arizona Highway Patrol, where he retired after 21 years. It was while
still working there that he read about Mobile Meals in the newspaper and also in the PCOA Never Too Late newsletter. That
is how Jerry became a driver.
Jerry is going to take a short break from driving to help babysit his new great grandbaby, and he’s asked us to put him on “temporary cancel
status”. But he’s promised to return to “active duty” when Jonivan goes off to school. We hope so! He’ll be greatly missed until he comes
back.
There are two ways to obtain Medicare:
* Original Medicare (referred to as Parts A and B) or Medicare Ad
vantage (Part C).
* Medicare now includes a Part D prescription drug coverage,
which is optional.
YOU WILL NEED TO CHOOSE THE PLAN YOU WANT
Medicare parts A and B:
* Are the same throughout the United States
Part A is free if you or your spouse have made payroll contributions
to Social Security for at least 10 years (40 quarters). If you otherwise
qualify for Medicare but neither you nor your spouse have con
tributed to Social Security for a minimum of 40 quarters (10 years),
you will pay a monthly premium ranging from $250 to $500 per
month. When you turn 65 and enroll in Medicare Part B, you have a
guaranteed right to buy a Medigap policy for 6 months. You cannot
be refused if you sign up during this open enrollment period.
Medicare parts C and D:
* Are available in a speciic county, state, or region only.
Medicare Supplement Insurance (sometimes referred to as a
Medigap policy) policies
* Are offered by private companies
