CLARE COLLEGE, CAMBRIDGE
‘HOPE’
CHAPEL SERVICES
MICHAELMAS TERM 2020
COVID-19
Much has changed since we last offered services in the Chapel, but we are delighted to re-open our
doors to Chapel worship and music once again. During this time of the COVID-19 pandemic, new
steps have been put in place to ensure safety for all:
- Attendance at Chapel services this term will initially be open to members of College only.
We hope to welcome back members of public at a later point in term, and details of this
will be announced on our website and social media pages.
- Congregational attendance at services by members of College or the public will be strictly
limited to adhere with social distancing. To secure a place seats must be booked in
advance via the Chapel website. Tickets will be available to book for the week ahead.
You must specify how many people in your household/bubble will be attending (up to a
maximum of six) and supply contact details for Test and Trace when doing so.
- In line with the Government’s COVID-19 Test and Trace programme, contact details for
all visitors and service attendees will be taken and held on file for a period of 21 days.
Your details will only be used, if necessary, in conjunction with the Test and Trace
programme and Clare College will not process this data for any other purpose.
- If you are feeling unwell or showing symptoms of Covid-19 please stay at home. If you
have attended Chapel and develop symptoms within 14 days you must notify us
immediately.
- Households and bubbles attending services must remain socially distanced at all times in
Chapel, especially if there is a queue on arrival or departure. It is a legal requirement
that face coverings are worn at all times by all those attending a place of worship.
A hand cleansing station is available on entry and exit to the Chapel.
- Orders of service will be placed on seats and you are asked to take these away with you
and dispose of them yourself.
- For now, there is no congregational singing at this time. Toilet facilities will not be
available to visitors, and there are no drinks or dining after services this term.
- All Chapel services will be streamed live on the Choir’s YouTube channel. Links will be
circulated through the Choir’s and Chapel’s websites and social media pages.
- Services on 5 October (Matriculation Service), 2 November (All Souls’ Requiem), and 18
November (Compline) will not be open to the public. This is to accommodate the full
Choir at these services, which will be streamed live.
- There will be four Advent Carol Services this year, to offer more opportunity for visitors
at these popular services. Those wishing to apply for tickets should contact the Head of
the Chapel Office by Wednesday 21 October (email nr399@cam.ac.uk), giving full contact
details and specifying which service they wish to attend. During this time we ask visitors
to be limited to two tickets per household for these services. All those who have been
allocated tickets will be notified by mid-November.

SUNDAY MORNINGS: EXPLORING CHRISTIANITY
A chance to spend half an hour each week reading through Luke’s Gospel together, and discussing
what strikes us. This is ideal for those who would like to learn more about Christianity, or who are
simply keen to refresh their memory. All members of College, and all views, are warmly welcome.
We will meet via Zoom, 9.30 a.m.–10 a.m. each Sunday morning, and an invite link will be given in
the weekly Chapel emails to the College.
READING GROUP: C. S. LEWIS’ ‘THE GREAT DIVORCE’
On Tuesday evenings at 7.30 p.m., there will be a short informal and friendly reading group, led by
our Decani Scholar, Hannah Grady. This term we will be exploring C. S. Lewis’ classic
work, The Great Divorce, an imaginative and thought-provoking story about a bus ride from hell to
heaven. We will aim to look at a chapter or two each week, and the group meets for the first time
on Tuesday 13 October, via Zoom. An invite link will be given in the Dean’s weekly email to the
College, and all are warmly welcome. You can also get in touch with Hannah (hng24@cam.ac.uk)
for more information, and to receive a free copy of the book in your pigeonhole.
A COMMEMORATION OF HUGH LATIMER
At Evensong on Thursday 15 October, we commemorate the life and martyrdom of Clare alumnus
Hugh Latimer. Latimer was a Fellow of Clare, later Bishop of Worcester, and was burnt at the stake
in Oxford in October 1555.
ALL SOULS’ DAY SERVICE
At this special choral service for All Souls’ Day, live-streamed from Chapel at 9 p.m. on Monday 2
November, we remember, and name before God, those we love who have died over the past year.
This year we shall also name, with thanksgiving, those who have endured illness or suffering, but
have recovered their health. More details will be shared with Clare members nearer the time of the
service.
SERVICE FOR REMEMBRANCE SUNDAY
The College’s annual Service of Remembrance for all those who have lost their lives in war and
conflict takes place this year in Memorial Court, on Sunday 8 November at 10.45 a.m. The service
will include the laying of the College’s wreath, as well as choral pieces, readings, and hymns. College
members are invited to wear gowns, and to gather around the main archway at the front of Memorial
Court.
STAFF CAROL SERVICE
All Clare staff are warmly invited to the Staff Carol Service in Chapel on Thursday 3 December at
7 p.m. The service will include traditional festive carols and readings.
COVER IMAGE
The cover image is Hope in the Prison of Despair, by the Pre-Raphaelite painter Evelyn De Morgan
(1885–1919). It personifies Hope as the bringer of light and liberation to those who are weighed
down or oppressed.
RECITALS
Regrettably, there will be no pre-service Sunday recitals this term. We hope to reintroduce these
later in the year.
MUSIC
After one of the longest stretches of silence in the Chapel in recent years, we are delighted to
welcome back our Chapel Choir for services this term. Social distancing rules require us to sing
most services with smaller forces, socially distanced. This has offered us greater scope for consort
music making, services for upper and lower voices, and – occasionally – services with full choir but
no congregation. Video cameras have been installed in Chapel in September, allowing us to live
stream all services and reach all corners of the globe. This year we have doubled the number of
Advent Carol Services to four, to help offer more people the opportunity to join us for these very
popular services.
It takes more than a global pandemic to dampen our ambition and enthusiasm. This term we give
the world première of four works commissioned for Clare College and Graham Ross by Choir &
Organ magazine, with choral works by Seán Doherty (18 October) and Anna Semple (18 November)
and organ voluntaries by Pia Rose Scattergood (25 October) and Emily Hazrati (15 November).
Alongside familiar pieces of the canon we continue our exploration of lesser-performed repertoire,
including some wonderful works by Black, Asian and ethnically diverse composers, and with male
and female composers represented in every service.
On Sunday 25 October we are joined by some of Clare’s undergraduate string players for music by
Beethoven and Brahms, and on Wednesday 18 October by violinist and Clare alumna Naomi
Warburton for candlelit Compline. On All Souls’ Day (Monday 2 November) we give a special
performance of Duruflé’s Requiem behind closed doors but live-streamed, joined by former Clare
Choir mezzo-soprano Kate Symonds-Joy, and Clare alumni baritone Dominic Sedgwick and cellist
Leo Popplewell. On the morning of Remembrance Sunday (8 November) we hold a special
outdoors service at Memorial Court, Clare College.
Our latest album of works by Benjamin Britten, including A Ceremony of Carols, is released worldwide
on the Harmonia Mundi label in October, and is available for sale via the Choir website or Old
Court Porters’ Lodge.
Full details of all events are available from the Chapel Office, or at www.clarecollegechoir.com.
