English 2 Honors
Due: 27 August 2012
Summer Reading and Home Study
Directions: Read the following two nonfiction selections and complete one of the book report formats for each book.
There will be two grades for each book: (1) the presentation of your book report format as a speech grade, and (2) a
written short essay exam. Both of these grades will enter into your first quarter’s grades, and if you read the books,
you will have no problem completing either of the requirements. If you take shortcuts, then you will suffer the
consequence of fiction. Both of the book reports are due AUGUST 27, the first day of school, and each day they are
late, starting with the period following your period on August 27, I will deduct 5 points. For example, if your period
is handed to me August 29, 2 days late, I will deduct 10 points (1 day [5 points] + 1 day [5 points] = 10 points) from
the grade you receive for your efforts.
Chew on This: Everything You Don’t Want To Know About Fast Food: By Eric Schlosser (304 pages)
The goal of this book is to encourage adolescents to make better decisions regarding their diets. Eric Schlosser looks
extensively into the fast food industry. The book examines the nature of slaughterhouses and chicken farms and the
inhumane operations of these systems. In addition, Schlosser discusses obesity and many medical conditions
resulting from fast food consumptions. Schlosser shows us what goes into the foods of the most famous fast food
restaurant in the nation: McDonalds. The reader will learn about the many health problems resulting from processed
foods in the fast lane.
My Posses Don’t Do Homework: by Louanne Johnson (226 pages)
The title of this book alone is attractive to the young reader. The students in this book have many problems to
confront and many emotional blockages to overcome in pursuit of a possible education. A determined teacher
attempts to motivate some the most reluctant and disinterested students in the inner city. The young reader can
identify with many of the teen characters within the book. Humor and fast reading are two of the qualities that add
to this book
You can purchase all your reading needs at Otto’s Book Store. They have these sheets and the books.
