Goodenough College Annual Review 2019/20Director’s reportcontinuedImpact and inclusivityAt the time of writing, the BlackLives Matter movement has inspiredthose of us who lead the Goodenoughcommunity to prioritise what we cando to advance our thinking onequality, diversity, anti-racism andinclusivity and to identify how we canachieve lasting change. The Collegeexists to foster tolerance andunderstanding but it is clear there ismore to be done. As we continue towrite the history of the College, wewill listen and learn, recognising thestrength we gain from the diversity ofcultures and nationalities that makeup our community. We will continuethe conversation on this issue withour Members, Alumni and colleagues, review current practices and seekexpert help to develop and put inplace a College Equality, Diversityand Inclusion Strategy by the endof 2020. I look forward to providingan update on our progress in nextyear’s Review. Our Scholarships and Bursariesprogramme aims to attract andrecruit the most talentedpostgraduates, whatever theirfinancial circumstances. In theforthcoming 2020/21 academic year, the College will increase theallocation to the Scholarships andBursaries Panel by over 20% to£0.6m, helped by all those whoresponded to our 2020 COVID-19Appeal. We expect that over 70%of Scholarships and Bursariesexpenditure in the 2020/21 academicyear will be funded through generousdonations from Alumni and otherfunders. We are extremely gratefulfor this continuing support. Our commitment to listening to thevoices of our Members and Alumnihas shaped several decisions takenover the last year. The introduction ofa new Community Bursary was adirect response to hearing that, forsome Members, money remains abarrier to participating fully in thelife of the College. This new Bursaryis designed to cover the cost of mealsin the Great Hall and Freddie’s,College trips within London or toThe Burn and cultural and socialevents, like the Bloomsbury Operaand TEDx. You can read about theimpact this support has had on ourfirst recipient Ambrose Odoch onpage five. We hope to secure furthersupport to be able to offer moreCommunity Bursaries in 2020/21.We were pleased to receive anindependent endorsement of thepositive impact of our Scholarshipand Bursary programme. A study wecommissioned, based on socialreturn investment principles, foundMembers’ experience at the College isoverwhelmingly positive. It reportedthe social value experienced byMembers and their families issignificant, at a level between twoand three times the value of the costof the activities at the College. OurScholars reported many benefits tothe financial support they receivedincluding freedom from financialworry, more time available forstudies, a sense of safety andbelonging and increased awareness, understanding and tolerance of othercultures. In time, we hope to extendthis piece of work by commissioningan independent analysis of theCollege’s impact across the fullMembership body.“ We welcomed externalrecognition of ourcommitment to equality, diversity and inclusion thisyear. In September 2019,we won a ChampioningDiversity award, as partof International HousesWorldwide, at the globalPIEoneer awards, whichcelebrate innovationand achievement ininternational education. ”Founders’ Day12
