Goodenough College Annual Review 2019/20ForewordEric Tracey Chairman of the BoardThis Annual Review 2019/20 reflectson a year which began with greatambition and optimism and endedwith the College managing theimpact of the COVID-19 pandemic onthe Goodenough community. I mustcommend the College’s Board andManagement team, particularly ourDirector, Rebecca Matthews, for theswift and successful actions taken toensure the College could continue toprovide a safe and supportive homefor Members.The year saw the successful launch ofthe College’s first five-year StrategicPlan and of our CommemorativeBiennium celebrating two significantanniversaries for the College. 2020marks 90 years of GoodenoughCollege and we were delighted toinvite Members, Alumni, partners andstakeholders to join us for aprogramme of events before thisactivity was curtailed by thepandemic. We look forward tocontinuing the celebrations in 2021when we mark the 70th anniversaryof the launch of the Lord Mayor’sNational Fund for Thanksgivingwhich helped to build WilliamGoodenough House.In response to the Black Lives Mattermovement, we have begun a fullreview of our systems, processes andsignals. Aided by an externalspecialist, we plan to have a CollegeEquality, Diversity and InclusionStrategy in place by the end of 2020.The year saw the College welcomeGraham Ward CBE as President of theAdvisory Council, following theretirement of Professor René Weis.Graham brings to this important rolehis immense knowledge andunderstanding of the College, gainedover two decades as a Governor.Very sadly, we have lost one currentand one former Governor and oneformer member of staff to illness thisyear. Deborah Goodwin had been afriend of the College since 2017, whileJohnny Polk’s exceptional servicecovered almost 40 years, includingsome years as Vice-Chairman of theCollege. Former Director ofDevelopment and External Relations,Mark Lewis, established much of ourAlumni engagement and fundraisingactivities during his eight years atthe College. They will all be verymuch missed.In October 2020 I will be steppingdown as Chairman after 15 years onthe Board and a professionalassociation with the Collegestretching back to 1980. There ismuch to be proud of during mytenure, notably the Strategic Review,improved transparency in ourgovernance and the recruitment ofRebecca Matthews as Director. I amalso delighted to be overseeing anorderly succession to a distinguishedAlumnus, Stuart Shilson LVO DL, asthe next Chair of the College.“ The year saw thesuccessful launch of theCollege’s first five-yearStrategic Plan and of ourCommemorativeBiennium celebrating twosignificant anniversariesfor the College.”TEDx 2019I am pleased to report that inNovember 2019, we were able to bringseveral houses on MecklenburghSquare back into the College’s Estate.We hope this will offer opportunitiesto extend the accommodation offeredto Members in future. Marnie Howlett(Canada)Studying for a PhD in International Relations at theLondon School of Economics and Political Science (LSE)“The friendships I have made and the conversationsI have had while living at Goodenough haveundoubtedly shaped my PhD research and changedmy life. It is an incredible feeling to be surroundedby people from so many different cultures andbackgrounds who share my values, and who areoutgoing, adventurous and continuously striving tolearn more about themselves and the world.“Goodenough’s clubs and societies make itextremely easy to meet people. There is somethingfor everyone, whatever you are passionate about.The College’s Running Club introduced me toamazing people from all over the world who alsolove to run, giving me some of my favouritememories at the College and, as co-chair of theCanadian Society, I organised Thanksgivingdinners and Canada Day celebrations. This year,I had the honour to bear the Canadian flag at theCommonwealth Service at Westminster Abbey. Torepresent Canada in front of the Royal Family wasan experience that I will never forget.“I have also co-founded Goodenough’s academicjournal with three other PhD students and had theopportunity to deliberate the challenges facingdemocracy in a digital age with Lord Howell and DrDommett at the annual Cumberland Lodge Debate.I will undoubtedly take what I have learned fromthese experiences with me into my future career.“It is Goodenough’s community that really sets theCollege apart. My friends at Goodenough have mademe see things differently and understand so muchmore about the world and the experiences ofothers. Learning is an integral part of life at theCollege. The conversations I have had whilerunning, sitting in the garden or at dinner in theGreat Hall have opened my eyes, shaping my studiesand my world.“I know that when I leave, it will be tough to findanywhere else like Goodenough. It’s a life-changingplace; no one leaves the same person that they werewhen they arrived.”3
