Issue FOUR 2020
At the moment it appears that no
one in the UK knows what is ahead of
us in the coming months, with mixed
messages coming from the UK
Government on the pandemic, Brexit
and international trade agreements.
I don’t think anyone could have
predicted the path of the last few
months and with the furlough scheme
set to end it will certainly be an
interesting time for British industry. It
would be good to get some feedback
from the Blinds & Shutters industry on
how it sees the future.
I suspect there may be some
difficult times ahead, but hopefully I
will be proved wrong and there is
certainly some optimism in the pages
of this months issue. Keep your news

NEWS IN BRIEF
Northern Ireland factory opens
Bloc Blinds, has opened Northern Ireland’s first dedicated
PPE manufacturing facility in close proximity to its
headquarters in Mid Ulster.
This follows the company’s move to
repurpose its production line during the
COVID-19 pandemic to produce PPE for
healthcare workers.
Cormac Diamond, Bloc Blinds managing
director, explained,
“At Bloc Blinds we see this new hub as a
long-term commitment to a dedicated PPE
manufacturing facility. Our aim has always
been to support as many frontline carers as
possible, and we are now in a position to
produce up to four million FaceShields per
week.
“While blinds remain our core business,
and we have since reopened our operations
in a safe and controlled manner, this new
PPE facility will allow us to continue to
manufacture FaceShields whilst also creating
new jobs for the area in these challenging
times.”
Northern Ireland Economy Minister Diane
Dodds, who officially opened the site, added,
“The Covid-19 crisis has had a devastating
impact on not only our own economy but
also those across the globe. It has been
heartening however to see so many local
companies innovating and adapting
production to meet the recent challenges.
“In the case of Bloc Blinds this has meant
moving into an entirely new product and
repurposing their production lines to make
FaceShields. As a result of their ingenuity
they have begun supplying PPE to help in the
fight against the disease which has enabled
them to not only protect employment but
also expand. It has been an honour to
officially open their new dedicated visor
facility here in Magherafelt.”
Bloc Blinds recently invested £100,000
into their blinds manufacturing headquarters
in Northern Ireland. Part of this investment
included a brand new state of the art
Display room which facilitates a series of
online support programmes for trade
partners such as product training and
troubleshooting sessions.
In addition, this extension to the
company’s HQ offers the opportunity for
consumers to learn about the Bloc product
range including the Bloc Out via online
consultations which the company is currently
taking bookings for.
To ensure quality and maintain fast
manufacturing times, Farnborough Blind
Company has invested in two pieces of
equipment from Atech, a Matic Ares
5000 welder, which was installed in
October 2017 and the Matic M1-PC-6
cutting table in January of this year.
Originally cutting by hand or on
Louvolite tables and using glue to seal
the edges, both time consuming jobs, Bill
realised the need for new equipment.
“We looked at other manufactures
before making our final decision
including some we’ve previously
purchased from. There are both cheaper
and more expensive alternatives out
there, but we knew Matic machines
would last a life time as the build quality
is robust!” commented owner Bill Wyatt.
Having used high frequency welding
machines in the past, Bill was fully aware
of the disadvantage of the unsightly
marks left on the finished product. He
was looking to achieve the perfect
seamless join, which he found in the
Ares. Bill explained, “With high frequency
you get a shiny finish where as the Ares
has a function and adjustable settings
that eliminates this happening. Each
fabric is different in weight; finish etc. so
having settings that can be adjusted is
imperative to achieving a perfect finish.
Other welding machines do not have
this seamless join function”
It also has the advantage of 19
memory channels which allows you to
save the settings for the different
materials.

NEWS IN BRIEF
R+T postponed until 2022
Messe Stuttgart is postponing the next edition of the R+T
– the leading world trade fair for roller shutters,
doors/gates and sun protection systems – to 21 to 25
February 2022.
This decision was based on the intensive discussions between the project managers and all
partners, supporter associations, the Trade Fair Advisory Board and leading manufacturers.
During the last few weeks an intensive and, at times, personal survey of national and
international exhibitors was also conducted. This survey also produced a clear result. "From
the very first day, we focused on close and transparent communication with everyone
involved. The intensive discussions and the exhibitor survey clearly show that R+T cannot be
reliably staged at present with its accustomed quality, especially on account of the high
internationality and the extremely long preparation phase," said Roland Bleinroth, president
and CEO of Messe Stuttgart. "R+T is much more than just a trade fair! The exchanges with
colleagues, intensive technical discussions, numerous networking events and accompanying
events make R+T a large family gathering every three years. However, all this cannot be
guaranteed under the present conditions. Although it was not easy for us to make this
decision after two and half years of planning, preparation and commitment, it is the only
correct one at present," added Sebastian Schmid, department director technology at Messe
Stuttgart. "By postponing R+T to 2022, we primarily want to give our exhibitors and partners
the greatest possible planning security. In February 2022 manufacturers will again be able to
access the entire R+T network which they know and are accustomed to. We are pleased that
we and the industry have found a solution in order to repeat the previous success of the
leading world trade fair."
However, the postponement of R+T also opens up new opportunities and doors for the
industry. "In the originally scheduled event period, i.e. 22 to 26 February 2021, all our
exhibitors will have the opportunity to present their developed innovations and new
products to trade visitors all over the world during the digital R+T," said Sebastian Schmid.
The centrepiece of this digital format will be the R+T Innovation Award which will be
staged according to the original plans as a live event. Key topics such as handicraft, the smart
home and architecture will also be examined. The programme will be supplemented by
hybrid, industry-specific technical talks and different matchmaking services. The presented
contents will also be available online after the digital R+T for another 365 days up to the
next R+T and will be regularly updated. "In the next few weeks we will finalise the concept
for the digital R+T and will start the first implementations directly. We will also take all the
important steps to ensure a successful R+T in 2022. We can hardly wait to welcome all our
exhibitors and visitors in person again in Stuttgart from 21 to 25 February 2022," said a
delighted Sebastian Schmid.
Awning specialist markilux can
congratulate itself on yet another award.
The cassette awning MX-3, now on the
market for a year, won the “German
Design Award” at the start of February,
in the “Design Building Elements” section
in the category: “Excellent Product”.
The jury of the German Design
Council, who selected the awning as the
award winner, justifies this in terms of
the curves of the MX-3. The jury felt the
awning united linear architecture and
natural shapes. Klaus Wuchner, director
of sales and marketing at markilux, and
Christiane Berning, head of the
marketing and business development
department, were presented with the
award in the first week of February
during the Ambiente Fair in Frankfurt
am Main. It is now the second design
award for the awning model as it already
received an “Iconic Award” for its stylish
design in 2019. “We attach great
importance to the balanced design of
our products that reflects the spirit of
the times and, simultaneously, is timeless,”
says Klaus Wuchner. Every time the
company receives an award, Mr
Wuchner sees it as a confirmation of the
company's product strategy. Because for
years now the company has interpreted
awnings as design products, from the
cover to the frame, communicating this
to the end customer. Christiane Berning
points out: “To leave this international
competition as one of 70 gold award
winners from 5,300 entries is one more
step toward making the brand wellknown
at an international level.” And, at
the same time, it is a quality seal which
indicates to the end customer both its
quality and value.

High home spending after holiday lockdown
New research has revealed millions of consumers are spending more money than usual on
their homes as a result of lockdown, with 75 per cent of Brits planning further
improvements over the next year, including decorating, kitchens, bathrooms and
extensions.
The data provides reassurance that
despite the coronavirus, there are still
lucrative opportunities for businesses in the
home interiors sector. However, the research
also discovered that even though the UK is
easing its way out of lockdown, almost half of
people who want to view items for their
home in person are concerned about going
to the shops.
Instead, they’re more likely to turn to
social media for interiors inspiration before
choosing which businesses to buy from, with
YouTube, Instagram and Pinterest among the
preferred channels, but with home interiors
magazines and brand websites proving
popular too.
The research, which questioned over
2,000 consumers and was commissioned by
home interiors marketing agency Unhooked
Communications, found 72 per cent of
people have bought new interiors products
for their home over the last two months. The
most popular items include wallpaper or
paint (22 per cent), kitchen utensils or
cooking items (21 per cent), and tools (16
per cent).
Over two-fifths (42 per cent) said they’re
investing more in their home in 2020
because they have spent less money day-today
due to lockdown. More than a third (36
per cent) said because they aren’t going on
holiday this year, so are instead splashing
more cash on home improvements.
For the three-quarters of consumers
planning home improvements over the next
12 months, two fifths (39 per cent) want to
redecorate at least one room, a quarter
want to landscape the garden, 14 per cent
want a new bathroom, and more than one in
ten (11 per cent) want a new kitchen. With
more people working remotely, a further
one in ten said they want to create a home
office.
While 45 per cent have concerns about
going to the shops to make their home
improvement plans a reality, there are other
considerations shoppers face when it comes
to choosing which home interiors retailers to
buy from.
Compared to 12 months ago, over half
(54 per cent) said they’re more likely to want
to support local businesses and 44 per cent
said they’re more concerned about the cost
of products and services for their home.
However, two thirds stated they’re happy to
pay more for items if they are good quality
and last longer than cheaper items. On top
of that, nearly half (46 per cent) said it’s
important to buy from sustainable businesses
that reduce their impact on the environment.
When it comes to choosing local home
interiors retailers and suppliers, over half (55
per cent) rely on recommendations or
reputation; a half (50 per cent) make their
decision based on cost, and 40 per cent want
to see proof of previous work and case
studies. Over a third (34 per cent) want to
be assured the retailer will deliver the
products or the work within a certain
timeframe, just over a fifth (22 per cent)
want to work with businesses that offer a
broad range of services or products, and 19
per cent take into consideration any added
value services or extra support the
businesses are able to offer.
Claire Gamble, MD of Unhooked
Communications, which carried out the
research, said: “We know from speaking to
our clients and contacts in the home
interiors industry that many have started to
see a rise in sales and enquiries as people are
spending more time at home and are looking
to improve their spaces. With our research
showing that many consumers are planning
further home improvements over the
coming months, these are promising signs for
the sector.
“But understandably, some people have
concerns about visiting shops and
showrooms, so it’s no surprise 42 per cent of
those questioned said they prefer to search
online for inspiration and information more
now than they may have 12 months ago.
While we know retailers and other specialist
home interiors businesses are doing what
they can to make shoppers feel safe in store,
the sudden changes to our day-to-day lives
and ways of working have emphasised the
importance of using digital means to engage
with customers.
“When it comes to products for the
home, consumers often want to see them in
person. But with social distancing and limited
numbers in stores, home interiors retailers
should look at how they can inspire and
inform their customers from afar.
“Our research shows YouTube, home and
interiors brands’ own websites, social media
channels like Facebook, Instagram and
Pinterest, and home interior magazines are
among the preferred channels for consumers
when researching trends and products, and
these provide a great first platform for
businesses to engage with audiences before
welcoming them into their shops. As well as
using these channels to showcase products
and services, it’s also important for
businesses to consider the messaging and
stories they convey too as we know
consumers are looking for sustainable, local
businesses that can deliver quality and
reliable products and services.”
According to the research, consumers
head to the following channels to find
inspiration and information for their home:
· YouTube (22 per cent)
· Home and interiors brands’ own websites
(18 per cent)
· Facebook (17 per cent)
· Home and interiors magazines, online or
print (16 per cent)
· Instagram (16 per cent)
· Pinterest (14 per cent)
· Home and interiors TV programmes (11.49
per cent)
· Home and interiors bloggers and
influencers (9 per cent)

There has been a
management
change at Sattler
SUN-TEX GmbH
Sattler SUN-TEX GmbH, the Austria-based
company among the worldwide leaders of
producers of technical textiles for sun
protection, visual and glare protection, boat covers
and outdoor upholstery, reports a planned
management change of as of 1st July 2020.
Andreas Freiler, after his long and highly
successful service as managing director
technical/production, has entered his welldeserved
retirement. He has led the company,
along with Manfred Heissenberger, managing
director marketing & sales, to a leading position in
terms of quality and innovation. With the de-
velopment and launch of innovative products such
as Lumera and Twilight Pearl, to name but a few,
Sattler SUN-TEX GmbH has set new market
standards for sun protection. Due to the
consistent market orientation of production and
production planning, Sattler SUN-TEX GmbH
stands for the highest levels of supply security and
for quick delivery times, even in difficult periods.
The position of managing director
technical/production has been taken over by a
textile expert of international experience, Ibrahim
Türköz.
Mr. Türköz completed his qualifications as textile
machine operator, textile mechanic and apprentice
master. Afterwards, he graduated from his studies
of Textile and Clothing Technology at the
Hochschule Niederrhein (Germany).
He has almost 20 years of qualified leadership
experience as factory manager, technical section
leader and managing director in the production of
technical textiles and clothing textiles. He has
gathered his experience in Germany, Switzerland,
and to a large extent outside of Europe.
“A highly competent and well-regarded
professional leaves us in the person of Andreas
Freiler, but due to our long-term planning, we
managed to gain a highly experienced textile
manager in Ibrahim Türköz for our company. After
an intense period of handover, Freiler continues to
be at our side with his counsel and expertise,” as
Manfred Heissenberger is glad to sum up his
thoughts about this fortunate instance of
succession planning.
As for Ibrahim Türköz, he is already busy
working on shaping the future of SATTLER SUN-
TEX: “I am grateful to be collaborating with this
team of specialists of the domain of technical
textiles here at Sattler. Further- more, it is a
pleasure to look forward to the multitude of tasks
and challenges linked to the elaboration of a new
collection.”

Louvolite says that
its Carnival Fabrics
can help protect
the home
There’s a well known household product
that we likely all use which announces
proudly, via whichever media you come
across, that it kills 99% of all known germs.
We are told that the performance of this
product contains the active ingredients needed to
fight and kill germs and that it exceeds the World
Health Organisation recommended level for
disinfecting your home.
The website for this product provides
information on how to “effectively disinfect your
home from Coronavirus”. Reading through the
advice it’s easy to understand how people would
vigorously clean their homes and maintain that
level of hygiene on floors, worktops and hard
surfaces – but what about surfaces which are not
hard surfaces such as window blinds.
It has been stated that windows typically occupy
around15 - 20% of the surface area of the walls in
a home. From our industry’s perspective, that
presents significant opportunities to furnish those
openings and help protect the home from excess
solar gain and resultant overheating in summer
times and heat loss during wintertime - of course
they also add style, decoration, light control and
privacy too.
It’s almost part of Louvolite’s genetic make up
that we try to incorporate added features and
benefits into whichever product we offer to our
customers. So when Coronavirus entered into our

lives - uninvited and definitely unwanted -
resulting in tens of thousands of deaths and
mass disruption to us all, we looked at the
various chemical elements that go into our
formulations and worked to see if any
combination of these could help combat
the virus.
After a number of highly focused days
we identified what we considered to be the
formulation that offered the best chance of
having an impact and applied it to
Louvolite’s Carnival fabric, both light
filtering Carnival and Carnival Blackout.
After our routine and standard product
performance testing, manufacturing and
hanging tests, samples of the coated
Carnival and Carnival Blackout fabrics were
quickly sent off to an independent testing
house specialising in virology, this was just
as the country went into lock down.
Wow – so many things happened to our
world during the following months. Our
business went into hibernation with only a
skeleton staff being maintained to accept
raw materials that had been ordered weeks
previously and already en route.
In addition, we maintained service to our
operations overseas whilst limiting supply
at home to those serving the NHS and
care homes. The associated immediate
impact on our private lives has been life
changing for many and who knows what
the long-term impact on future
generations may be.
As the country started to ease into the
“new normal”, Louvolite started to bring
teams of production colleagues back into
work. Carnival production restarted using
the coating formulation as had been
production tested and submitted to the
laboratory for testing. Weeks went by and
changes to our business and our
customers’ businesses continued to throw
up challenges that had never before been
considered.
In early June we received our test report
from the Independent Test laboratory - to
be absolutely honest, with all the other
challenges that we were facing at that time
we hadn’t given this much thought over
the previous weeks. Once received we had
to read it a few times to sure we fully
understood the results. We knew from the
report in the medical Lancet Journal that
Coronavirus can remain active on fabric
for up to 72 hours.
The tests on Louvolite Carnival fabrics
had shown that 99% of the Coronavirus
introduced onto Carnival fabrics had been
eliminated in 1 hour.
This was absolutely amazing and we
quickly ensured that our IP team were
busy writing the document that would,
when filed, bring intellectual protection to
the active formulation and coating methods
used to create Coronasafe.
Within two more weeks Louvolite had
created a simple eshot that summarised the
new and unique feature that can be
attributed to a blind manufactured using
Louvolite Carnival Coronasafe fabric. It has
been established that the performance of
Coronasafe will last up to the lifetime of
the blind depending on the cleaning regime.
So will Louvolite Carnival Coronasafe
fabrics change your life? No. Are they a
cure all product? Absolutely not.
That said, when the typical person,
school or nursing home wants to ensure
that they have done everything they can to
help protect the people they care for from
the disaster that is Coronavirus and they
want or need to purchase a blind - Carnival
Coronasafe fabrics will offer that extra layer
of security that other fabrics do not.
Ask yourself – if you were in their care
what would you want them to select?

Investing for the future
Blinds & Shutters
spoke to Stuart
Dantzic on his
plans for
Caribbean Blinds
B&S understands that you are
extending your factory. What are the
reasons, especially with the COVID
crisis still in play?
It was always our plan to extend our
production facility in 2020 and whilst the
pandemic might have raised new challenges, as a
forward thinking business we have adapted and
evolved to ensure we can meet our growth goals.
We are actually on target to beat our previously
set targets for this year. More than doubling the
company’s current storage capacity, the 10,000
sq/ft extension will accommodate all aluminium
profiles for every product line, as well as the
aluminium and steel cutting department, releasing
space within the main building for extra assembly
stations and rigs, resulting in a significantly
increased production capacity. The investment has
also enabled us to remain on our current site and
in Sudbury for the foreseeable future, continuing
Caribbean Blinds’ two-decade long residence in
the area.
Do you have new products on the way?
We have a number of exciting innovations in
the pipeline, primarily around our outdoor living
range. These will all be revealed at the industry’s
leading annual external shading conference –
CBCON - which is scheduled to take place in
March 2021. To wet the readers appetite though,
these will include a PLUS version of our award
winning Deluxe Outdoor Living Pod aimed at the
commercial sector, along with an innovative new
patio awning proposition.
Does this mean you will be employing
more people?

What does your distributor base
have to look forward to?
We are always setting the standards for
sales, marketing and training support for our
partners and every year we step up our
support - 2021 will be no different Along
with innovative new products and an
exciting new patio awning proposition, we
will be introducing further market leading
sales aids and in store demo stands to allow
dealers to showcase and demonstrate to
consumers the superior features and
benefits of our range. Furthermore, our
CBCON conference will have a number of
industry leaders covering both on and
offline marketing, along with sales processes
to help our partners generate more
enquiries, sell more products, and ultimately
boost their bottom line.
Has COVID meant that people are
spending more on their homes
and have you seen an upsurge in
orders?
Without a shadow of a doubt. Even
though the travel ban has been lifted, the
majority of consumers are not travelling
abroad. Instead, they are investing their
holiday budgets, along with money they
would have otherwise spent on going out
for meals, weekends away etc, on their
homes. Consumers are realising their homes
are their castles again and have spent the
many weeks of lockdown, looking at and
spending time in their gardens, particularly
with the amazing weather we had.
Therefore, attention, and subsequently
budgets, are being turned and spent on the
garden with many consumers wanting to
create their very own slice of paradise in
their back gardens. Consumers also realise
spending money on their properties is safe,
as property prices, whilst they can dip,
always go up and current research shows
that properties with a well-designed and
landscaped garden, sell for significantly more
than those without.
How do you see the market going
forward into 2021?
I fully expect the upward trend we are
currently experiencing to continue into
2021. This re-focus on the importance of
our homes is not a fad and I believe that
not just the ‘shading’ sector, but the whole
home improvement sector, will see
extremely positive trading conditions next
year – those companies who are forward
thinking and dynamic that is. Furthermore, I
believe the external shading season will
start earlier than normal, and average order
values will continue to increase due to
consumers purchasing options such as
lighting and heating with their products to
enable them to use them all year round –
the garden is now an extension of the
indoor living space. As a company, we are
forecasting greater growth than originally
planned and will be helping our dealers
maximise every opportunity at CBCON.

LOUVRES
Wind protection
EWT wind turbines
fitted with burglarresistant
Renson
ventilation louvres
When planning its new Westeinde wind
farm in Anna Paulowna (NL), wind
turbine manufacturer EWT realised it
needed a solution for additional heat losses in their
ever more powerful wind turbines. Needless to say,
they soon turned to Renson. One condition was
that resistance to burglaries could not be
compromised in any way by fitting ventilation
louvres to the turbines.
“The reason for our partnership with Renson
was an increase in the rated power of our wind
turbines from 900 kW to 1 MW. In addition, the
net transformer, which is usually located in an
external building, was placed inside our turbines.
This caused our heat losses to double, and we
had to compensate for this in an efficient manner,”
EWT’s mechanical engineering manager, Danny
Ferket explains. “We previously had a cooling
system in our wind turbines, but this was no
longer able to cope with the new configuration.
There were various options to compensate for
this, from increasing the airflow to reducing the
pressure drop inside the turbine – or installing a
different type of cooling altogether. We eventually
chose to fit ventilation louvres to create an
additional inflow of cooler (outside) air. This
solution offered the best balance between cost
and durability.”
On the flip side, ventilation louvres could
potentially lower the burglar resistance of the
doors in the wind turbines. Considering the fact
these turbines contain lots of metals that are
attractive to thieves, this posed a real problem.
“That’s why we were specifically looking for louvres
that complied with burglar-resistance class RC3 as
a minimum; the same class as our doors, which are
made of 8 to 12 mm of lasered stainless steel,”
Danny Ferket continues. “The dimensions of the
ventilation louvres were eventually decided by the
airspeed and the amount of space they were

doors.”
Engineers from both Renson and EWT
put their heads together to find the perfect
louvres of this application. “As part of this,
Renson showed the necessary flexibility to
develop louvres that met our specific
(burglar resistance) requirements. Our
partnership with Renson could not have
gone better, and after validation in our test
turbines using CFD analyses, we gave them
the green light to install the louvres at our
Westeinde wind farm in Anna Paulowna,”
Danny concludes.
Hans Bannink (Renson): “The ventilation
louvres in question were fitted with an
additional removable frame with a dust
filter and special mountings for easy
installation in the doors of the wind
turbines. The main reason for these filters
was to protect the advanced equipment
inside the turbine against unwelcome
visitors and outside influences such as
torrential rain or storms. The fact that they
are easy to replace helps limit the pressure
drop. Eventually, two types of louvres were
developed to maximise the flow of fresh
outside air for each door in order to
provide the necessary cooling.”
Danny: “These ventilation louvres offer us
extra flexibility in hotter areas, as well as the
option to install an internal transformer. This
has enabled us to expand our product
portfolio in response to demand from the
market and specific environmental
requirements. The straightforward
installation process also gives us the
flexibility to add the louvres at the last
minute,” Danny Ferket concludes.

Making a move
State of the Art
Hospital Benefits
from P C
Henderson’s
Sirocco System
Sliding and folding door hardware
manufacturer, P C Henderson, has been
specified for a state of the art hospital build
in Breda, Holland.
Covering 128,000 square metres, the new
ultra-modern Amphia Hospital was officially
opened in November 2019. The design brief
focused on creating a new world of medical care
– aiming for increased one to one patient
contact, shorter waiting times, the highest level of
health care and a peaceful and comfortable
environment.
A key component in achieving this was the
design layout of 514 private luxury rooms with
adjoining bathrooms. The contactor wanted to
ensure ease of movement around the room - as
well as enhanced privacy and comfort. A key
solution in achieving this was through the
specification of a sliding door system to separate
the main room from the bathroom. P C
Henderson’s Sirocco system was identified as the
best solution for the project.
Rene van den Biggelaar, business unit manager
at P C Henderson Holland, commented “Our
Sirocco sliding door system is extremely popular
in healthcare applications due to its integrated
hydraulic self-closing feature which ensures the
door always comes to a safe and gentle close”.
In order to ensure a system that worked well
for both patients and staff – a test room was set
up during the build which was used for a number
of months. This provided valuable feedback which
led to some further customization of the product
to ensure the best user experience.
“The contractor required a system which could
work with a 1.35m wide door - ensuring that even
a hospital bed could be maneuvered through into
the bathroom if required. We achieved this by
manufacturing a custom made 2850mm length of
track to replace the systems usual 2200mm track.
We also designed a custom made stop which
would allow the door to be held open half way
across the opening - when only a small walk way
was required,” continued Rene.
Home to over 4000 employees, the hospital is
one of the largest clinical hospitals in the
Netherlands and utilises some of the most
innovative medical technology. With a key focus on
patient comfort - patients are provided with their
own iPad, which they can use for entertainment
purposes, as well as to order from a menu of over
25 nutritional hot meals.
Sustainability is also high on the hospitals agenda
– with systems in place to generate approximately
85% of its own energy needs. The use of P C
Henderson’s Sirocco system assisted towards this
through its hydraulic self-closing feature which
requires zero electric input.

Totally tensioned
Innovative external
tension blinds
from Guthrie
Douglas provide a
discrete system
with great wind
resistance
The redevelopment of the site of the Afrika
Museum near Brussels includes the
restoration and extension of the existing
museum, sensitively designed to preserve the
direct environment of the museum building as
much as possible.
The exhibition rooms are subtly equipped with
new technologies that bring the museum building
up to date. Those technologies are highly
sophisticated and have been integrated almost
seamlessly: improved thermic isolation and
airtightness, air-quality control, and precise control
of incoming light to allow the curators to create
the correct environment for their current
exhibitions.
External blinds were selected for the new glazed
extension to minimize internal ‘clutter’ around the
windows which could distract focus from the
exhibition specimens, as well as for maximum
control of heat in the summer. The primary
purpose of the blinds however was precise light
control, allowing the museum to adjust light levels
according to the specific requirements of each
exhibition. It was very important that the blinds
could therefore be deployed regardless of weather
conditions, and without moving around excessively
in the wind.
For the external design aesthetic, Stephane Beel
Architects wanted the blinds to be invisible when
retracted. Slimline mullions in the façade meant
that there were however minimal fixing points.
Guthrie Douglas and Helioscreen Projects worked
with the design team to integrate the roller
mechanisms into the façade structure. Stainless
steel cables were used to guide the blinds, and a
bespoke return pulley arrangement was designed
to give the blinds additional stability in high winds.
45 TESS 440 external wire-guided tension
systems were specified and installed to the south
and west facades of the building.
The success of the project was shown when the
Africa Museum won the first prize and the public
choice award in the category ‘heritage &
architecture’ of the Publica Awards 2019.
Guthrie Douglas products are found in
challenging climates such as the Middle East and
northern Scandinavia and its exterior blind systems
are manufactured with an inherently strong tension
mechanism that holds fabric tight even in extreme
temperatures and strong winds. They also meet the
stringent European Norms under the Construction
Related Products regulations (CPR) and all have
mandatory CE marking, which was introduced in
June 2013.

The heat is on
Caribbean Blinds
ask, will rising
temperatures
change the way we
design buildings?
Despite what many of us think, the
lockdown period hasn’t all been
negative… It has given the UK some of
the hottest temperatures and unprecedented
summer weather, but for some, it has been almost
impossible to keep their houses cool.
When designing any new build, renovation or
extension, the increasing issue of overheating and
the importance of external shading should be
addressed throughout each stage. Every measure
needs to be taken to ensure a building’s energy
efficiency is at its highest and to prevent the
growing number of eco and ultra-modern glass
properties from turning into unhabitable
‘greenhouses’.
The effects of glazing &
insulation
Flooding a room with natural light and creating a
feeling of endless space and openness are
important factors for occupant wellbeing. Large
expanses of glazing such as rooflights, panoramic
windows, sliding and folding doors can help blur
the boundaries between inside and out – all whilst
emitting free solar gain to passively warm a building
in the colder months. In addition to this, both wallto-floor
and loft insulation help to prevent warmth
from escaping, reducing the demand for heating
and lowering energy costs as a result.
Despite these benefits, the combination of
extensive glazing and high levels of insulation
coupled with a warming climate is resulting in
buildings severely overheating. Although this is
primarily in the summer, it also happens during the
winter, with indoor temperatures rising to
uncomfortable and unsafe levels that put occupant
health at risk. Last year alone, overheating in
buildings resulted in over 900 deaths in the UK – a
figure which is predicted to reach 7,000 by 2050,
and at a cost of £267m to Public Health England.
The solution: External
shading, awnings & blinds
As the sun is not static, a dynamic solution is
required to adapt to the changing ambient
conditions, preventing unwanted solar heat gain
during the summer months and allowing free solar
gain when required in the winter.
Unique perforated solar controlled fabrics can
provide an evenly distributed natural light source
whilst maintaining the view and connection to the
outside. This quick solution can help override high
levels of insulation and glazing, minimising any
unwanted solar heat gain by averting the sun’s rays
from reaching the glass and keeping buildings cool.
Not a new concept to the UK, awnings were
used on elaborate glass shop frontages in the
1800’s before air conditioning was invented as a
way to passively cool the interior of buildings whilst
also protecting goods from the damaging effects of
the sun.
This is proof that the solution to combat the
issue of overheating buildings already exists,
however, the change needed is within the
specification market, as these products need to be
designed and incorporated from the outset. We
need to begin to opt for alternatives to solar
control glass (that doesn’t prevent solar heat gain)
continues on page 32

or air conditioning that is “energy hungry”.
Low-e glazing vs external
shading
Low emissivity glass (or low-e glazing) is
glass that has an invisible microscopic
coating applied to it in order to improve its
thermal efficiency. Double and triple low-e
glazing rejects approximately 30% and 45%
of solar gain respectively, whereas external
blinds can reject up to 96% of solar heat
gain with minimal energy demand,
preventing overheating as a result.
In fact, an appropriately sized, positioned
and specified external shading device can
reduce interior temperatures by up to
18ºC, which in turn can reduce the energy
consumption otherwise needed to cool
down a hot room by more than 80%, and in
many instances makes air conditioning of
any description completely superfluous
Subsequently, the cost of adding external
shading can be offset by minimising or
avoiding the need for air conditioning.
Reduce maintenance
costs
External shading is now part and parcel
of modern building design and glazing,
helping to create sustainable buildings that
are comfortable and healthy for their users,
with lower running and maintenance costs.
Automatic outdoor blinds ensure a
thermally and visually comfortable indoor
environment with minimum energy demand
on any installed heating and cooling systems,
reducing energy costs and CO2 emissions.
In its proposed overheating building
regulations, the Ministry of Housing,
Communities & Local Government
(MHCLG) recommends moveable external
shading as the most effective way to
prevent overheating in buildings.
Caribbean Blinds has been helping to
create cool, comfortable and sustainable
buildings with innovative external shading
systems for over 30 years. By working
closely with the specification community,
we’ve been helping to educate and inform,
and to ensure external shading can be
seamlessly and cost-effectively integrated
within both new build and refurbishment
schemes. The solution definitely exists,
however, there is still a long way to go.
Increased awareness is needed across the
whole supply chain, from specification
(designer) to client (purchaser).

BLACKOUT BLINDS
Back to blackout
Are Yewdale
Blackout Blinds the
ultimate solution?
When your customer wants total
darkness, the YewdaleDefiant
blackout blind range is the ultimate
solution. Easily distinguishable from other blinds by
its sleek, black or white powder coated hardware
and well-enclosed fabric, the blackout blinds are
admired in schools, hospitals and even cinema
rooms around the country. Let’s take a look at
what makes this blackout blind range so effective.
One of the most notable elements of the
Yewdale blackout blind range is the solid, allencompassing
unit. It seals the window against
light in all parts.
Some retail ‘blackout blinds’ on the market are
only so due to the fabric they use. A blackout
fabric will stop light travelling through it, but if light
can seep around the edge or between the
brackets, the pursuit of total darkness is dashed.
Negating this and stamping its authority on the
subject, Yewdale’s blackout blinds have a headbox,
side channels and bottom channel. These fasten to
the wall and around the window or within the
recess, essentially boxing in the window and
eliminating light.
The choice of fabric is vital. The blackout
properties of a blind would be totally eliminated if
we weren’t fussy about what fabric we used in
our systems. The fabric we recommend is
complete blackout: Roach, Dart and Medway.
Roach and Dart are made from PVC and Medway
is made from polyester. Blackout fabrics are
typically denser and have a reflective coating on
the back which prevents light penetrating the
fabric.
The fabric comes with windcheat bars across
the middle. This reinforces the fabric and limits the
chance of the fabric being blown out of the side
channels by the wind of an open window. This
layer of attention to detail is what makes these
blackout blinds so superior. For others, a slight
breeze from an open window can cause the fabric
to billow and flap, removing the blackout
properties as sunlight seeps around the edges. A
windcheat bar prevents this, holding the fabric fast
in the side channels and protecting it from the
perils of an open window.
Whilst on the subject of side channels and
attention to detail, it is worth discussing the pile
seal used to block light from creeping through.
Great effort has been taken to ensure that no
light can enter the room through the side
channels. The difference between a standard
cassette with side channels and a blackout blind is
the pile seal used inside the side channels. This
fluffy seal disrupts the light that may make it into
the side channel whilst not restricting the blind’s
movement. Simple, yet so effective.
When it comes to the mechanism on a
blackout blind, you’ll notice we don’t use chains. A
gap in the headbox to allow the chain through
would compromise the blind’s blackout properties.
Instead we use crank or motor operated systems
that don’t require large gaps in the blind. Yewdale
has gone to every length to ensure light is blocked
at every opportunity.
The reason YewdaleDefiant blackout blinds are
the ultimate system on the market is not simply
through claims and bold statements, but because
it is tried and tested. Tweaks and adjustments
have been made throughout its development
based on client feedback. Yewdale’s range of
blackout blinds is an example of our
commitment to quality, creating blinds that serve
a purpose, and make sure that purpose is fulfilled
perfectly.

Sample selection
Getting a sample is
always a must when
selecting the right
blind
It is often said that your home should be an
expression of your personality, however being
confident with design and colour is not always
easy. Experts say that colour and designs do have
a positive effect on your mood. At the Fabric Box
we understand the internal conflicts that come
with the desire to be different with the worry that
by adding design the final interior does not turn
out as desired.
Providing a one to one consultation with your
customer will be key to close the sale enabling
them to choose the right fabric with confidence.
The Fabric Box sampling service is the perfect
solution providing free fabric samples that
consumers can use to create their own mood
board. Through physical visualisation of the colours,
materials, and designs to be used in the desired
room allows the homeowner to make the right
design choice, be it simplistic a design or have the
confidence to select a daring and bold design.
Choosing a large window blind design such as
Musa needs to work harmoniously with the rest
of the décor; try not to have clashing designs
making the room too busy, where the eye cannot
see a focal point.
A crucial element of interior design is colour,
keep your colour scheme to no more than three
shades, this allows a bold statement to be made
without being overpowering. Pink, green and grey
have created a powerful, yet feminine room with
our Lush fabric. The bold green tropical leaves are
softened with the blush sofa.
Those uber contemporary tastes can still play
with colour to obtain a modern minimalistic décor.

PARTITIONING
Partition time
Komfort’s new Plar
range can
complement any
home or office
Applying decades of intelligent research and
design, precise manufacturing and rigorous
testing, Komfort are excited to bring to life
and present their most impressive-yet and
completely reimagined Polar range; including five
stunning, frameless glass partitioning systems each
with their own unique merits; from leading acoustic
ratings and enhanced structural performance to
flexibility in configuration and inspired, minimalist
design.
Leading acoustic ratings
We all know that controlling sound in busy
working environments is important for a number of
reasons, with privacy, wellbeing and productivity
levels at the forefront. Driven by performance,
Komfort’s new Polar range delivers market leading
acoustic ratings of up to 54dB(Rw) for their new
double glazed system and up to 41dB(Rw) for their
new single glazed system, without comprising on
minimal and slimline design options. Impressive by all
accounts.
Enhanced structural
performance
Enhanced structural stability to satisfy even the
most demanding spaces.
All of Komfort’s new Polar systems achieve up to
severe duty, with the ability to reach notable heights
of up to 3.6m and achieve enhanced line loading of
up to 1.5kN to BS 6180; all of which have been
independently certified and tested.
These systems are designed to create a safe
space across varied interiors, specifically in
environments with heavy foot-fall and where
enhanced line loading is required.
Flexible, beautiful and
minimalist design
With an intrinsic focus on designing equal
framework aesthetics, this new Polar range offers an
array of stunning, frameless glass partitioning systems
available in single, double and triple glazed options.
Not only does this add to the beauty, it also allows
each Polar system to be fully complementary of one
another and work as one, giving you ultimate
flexibility in choice.
Komfort’s reimagined Polar range encourages
versatility in design and configuration so that designs
can be brought to life how they intended to be. The
new systems can be used across varying interiors
with their customisable glass options and
compatibility with stud partitions and adaptors. Not
to mention the ability to turn ordinary partitioning
into something to admire, with our snap-in profile
which accommodates a third pane of glass, mesh
and even an LED screen; or why not use Komfort’s
Kross Glaze aesthetics for an industrial style?

CELLULAR BLINDS
Cell-ebrating blinds
Louvolite has a
number of cellular
fabric options for
customers to
choose from
For the majority of the blind industry, the
acceptance of honeycombe, or cellular fabrics
over and above the more widely used
pleated fabric has been a lower process than
perhaps expected. This may have partly been due
to the much wider variety of pleated fabric options
available to the blind maker or with some of the
perceived additional challenges faced when
manufacturing blinds to satisfy full conservatory
installations including roof systems. Either way,
there is no doubting that the industry is now
recognising the features that cellular products bring
to the consumer and the wider choices available
reflect this.
The Louvolite cellular fabric options include a
translucent fabric, Halo, and a blackout, Luna. These
two fabrics come in either 25mm or 38mm cells
and are offered at an enormous 3m width for
those increasingly wide windows and doors.
One of the most obvious benefits of a pleated
fabric is the fact that the inner cords actually pass
through the centre of the “cell” and as they are not
on the surface of the fabric, they are not visible.
This also has a significant secondary benefit from a
child safety perspective as the cords are not
accessible.
The Louvolite Cellular programme also offers
the ability for consumers to combine the elements
of both blackout and light filtering fabrics in what is
sometimes known as a “day night blind”. This
option combines both fabrics with a floating
intermediate rail. Each of the fabric types are fitted
to either fixed rail and the consumer can select the
full window area to be covered by either the
translucent fabric or the opaque fabric. As the
intermediate rail is raised or lowered it collects
one of the fabric types and deploys the other,
simple yet very effective.
A much lauded benefit of the cellular blind is
that they help in reducing heat loss during the
winter months. As the “cell” design captures a
pocket of air this design also helps reduce the
amount of warm air escaping though a window
during the winter months . Whilst this is true of all
fabric types the double layer of fabric along with
the cellular design does have additional benefits
over a traditional pleated shade. In addition the
same pocket of air reduces solar heat gain in the
summer months.
It is sometimes best to save the best until last
and perhaps the best thing about Louvolite cellular
fabrics is how well they pair with the Louvolite
Perfect Fit progamme. The Perfect Fit product is
recognised as the neatest and simplest installation
method available when used with modern doubleglazing
installations. Work conducted to establish
heat loss reduction when using window shades
also established that the Perfect Fit framing system
reduced heat loss still further when compared to
products used without Perfect Fit.
When you combine the two elements of
Louvolite cellular fabric with Perfect Fit you really
do achieve a 1 +1 = 3 situation with each product
seamlessly combining to create a unique and
beautiful window decoration that is both functional
and at the cutting edge of design.

Daylight is being

According to the BAT Group, "Daylighting is
the culture of designing architectures
open to light and attentive to the
materials of the surfaces, maximizing visual

It is a "green oriented" philosophy that uses
sunlight as the main source to illuminate both

power and regulating its intensity.

• Appropriate control of natural light
• Quality of the visual environment
• Energy saving

Large scale shading
markilux can
provide shading for
large commercial
areas, as Blinds &
Shutters found out
Awning specialist markilux has a special
product portfolio to provide shade for
large outdoor spaces. One current
example of just such a place is the top-floor
restaurant and bistro “The Bernstein” in Bielefeld,
Germany. Standing 25 metres above the ground, it
offers its guests a 360-degree panorama view
over the city.
Alongside classic folding-arm awnings, the
markilux portfolio also includes systems which can
provide shade even to large areas. Jan Kattenbeck
and his colleagues from the “team : project” are
responsible for planning such awning systems. They
accompany the projects from the initial idea
through the advisory stage right through to 3D
visualisation and the cooperation with specialist
local dealers who assemble the systems.
Restaurateurs and hoteliers are glad to avail
themselves of this service when it comes to
making their outdoor seating spaces more
attractive for guests.
Large awning system for
restaurant in Bielefeld
An example of just such a space is the topfloor
restaurant and bistro “The Bernstein” in
Bielefeld, Germany. “We took this major project
through from the actual concept to assembly by
one of our specialist dealers. This case study
shows just how convenient shading for outdoor
restaurants can be,” says Jan Kattenbeck. The
awning ensemble consists of several systems of
the ‘markant‘ awning roof from markilux. It is
equipped all round with LED-Lines and infrared
heaters. “The customer also decided to have
vertical blinds with panoramic windows
incorporated in the systems. The blinds create a
cosy atmosphere in the evening and even in
cooler weather thanks to the infrared heaters,”
says Mr Kattenbeck. The property was a logistical

challenge which is why, already in the design
phase, markilux got as many of the local
companies involved in the project as
possible together to ensure fast completion.
“The restaurant is not only right in the
centre of Bielefeld, it is also on the eighth
floor of a building. To transport the
packages to the roof terrace, we needed a
crane. So everything had to go off
smoothly,” explains Mr Kattenbeck.
All-round service ensures
satisfied customers
The restaurant’s roof terrace now not
only offers a panoramic view but, thanks to
the new roof, a unique flair which
correspondingly attracts guests. “We have
now got a number of projects up and
running in the restaurant business - with all
kinds of different concepts and awnings.”
And that is exactly how the company
demonstrates its expertise: it has an
individually combinable product range, many
years of expertise and well-coordinated
workflows. Furthermore the use of 3D
visualisations is also helpful as they make it
easier for customers to decide on one
particular concept. Jan Kattenbeck stresses:
“As a team, we always feel we have been
successful when the customer is satisfied.
And of course when the guests feel happy
under our awnings. Because that is when
the investment in our products pays off long
term!”

Perfect pergola
The “pergola”
awning model by
markilux offers lots
of creative leeway
Variable awning systems are required to
provide individual shade for unusual floor
plans and areas of all sizes. One such
system is the “pergola” model by markilux. It can
be attached to the wall of any building and also
installed as a free-standing model. Furthermore, it
is also compatible with other models from the
manufacturer. This is the ideal way to protect
patios and open spaces outdoors from the sun
whenever it is required.
The markilux “pergola” is an awning which, at
the front, rests on two slender posts either fixed
in the ground or weighted down by aluminium
boxes filled with ballast. The other end is either
attached, by means of the cassette, to the wall of a
building or to another of the manufacturer's
models: the free-standing “markilux syncra”. This
alone makes the solar protection, which is also
available as a compact version for smaller areas,
very flexible. Particularly as the post system with
its special design can be attached to façades and
ceiling constructions which are otherwise not
suitable for installation of a folding-arm awning. It
is also extremely flexible in shape and is therefore
suitable both for private and commercial use.
Can be combined with other
models
“The ‘pergola’ can be combined with our frame
system ‘construct’, for example, and can thus
provide shade for very large areas. For more
privacy and protection from wind and rain, it can
also be equipped with vertical roller blinds and
side screens, into which a panoramic window can
also be integrated,” says Michael Gerling, director
of R&D and production at markilux. This function
is also something provided by a new side feature
which goes under the name of “format”. It can
also be combined with the “shadeplus” function, a
privacy screen and anti-glare protection which can

According to Michael Gerling, the awning
not only provides protection against the sun,
but creates additional space outdoors in
which you can spend time at any point
during the day, whatever the weather. “Size,
colour and cover selection can be adapted
to suit the architecture and surroundings,”
Furthermore, despite its delicate-looking
design, the “pergola” system is extremely
stable and can withstand wind speeds of up

to Michael Gerling, even when single units

Light and shade
The markilux MX-1
compact foldingarm
awning is now
also available with
LED Spots in the
cassette
The design of the markilux MX-1 compact
has received numerous accolades in recent
years. The awning also has a number of
accessories which can be used to personalise this
solar protection system in many ways. These
design options have now been complemented by
a new lighting system in the cassette.
The MX-1 compact has already been on the
market for several years and is in great demand.
This solar protection system is a real eye-catcher
with its futuristic-looking, deep body and
illuminated front profile. The model has already
received a number of design awards for its
outstanding appearance. The manufacturer also
offers the awning with a range of options
designed to give the product an individual touch.
Now this range of options includes a new LED
lighting system integrated into the cassette.
"We have been offering the MX-1 compact
with an LED Line and with LED Spots in the front
profile for some time now. And also with ambient
lighting behind the front panel. Both serve to give
a lighting effect that emphasises both the design of
the awning and the modern architecture it
adorns,” says Michael Gerling, director of R&D and
production at markilux. This new lighting option
continues this design approach, with additional
LED Spots under the cassette highlighting the
body of the awning with discreet light. At the
same time, the façade as well as the seating area
under the awning can be illuminated indirectly.
“Modern lighting design lends a space a particular
flair: through contrast, light temperature and the
occasional spotlight that draws attention to
specific details and creates an attractive play of
light,” explains Mr Gerling.
The lighting options can be
combined individually
Depending on the awning width, between two
and six additional LED spotlights with a diameter
of 40 millimetres can be accommodated in the
body. The power input for the spotlights and all
other electrical devices is designed to be an
alternating mains voltage current of 230 Volt at 50
Hertz with the supply unit located in the cassette.
Radio-controlled operation is incorporated by
means of a cable with a plug connector. The new
lighting option can be controlled by radio signal
using an 868 Megahertz io receiver or a 433
Megahertz RTS receiver in the awning as well as
via smart technology. Both ON/OFF switch
operation and a dimming function are also
available. The new lighting system in the cassette
can be combined with all the previous lighting
options, opening up even more possibilities to
personalise the MX-1 compact.

Micro fabric for
compact spaces
and bi-fold doors
The Style Studio Hive Collection was
developed using on trend colours, textures
and designs, creating a window masterpiece.
Our striking cellular fabrics are the star of the
show when it comes to honeycomb blinds. Hive
Blinds are a popular choice because of their energysaving
elegance. Hive fabrics have an improved
cellular structure that is designed to give increased
insulation while maintaining a modern, sleek look.
The unique cellular design traps air in an insulating
layer, blocking heat from the sun and helping keep
rooms at a lovely, ambient temperature. The
increased insulation also helps to reduce your
customers energy bills.
The introduction of the Hive Micro fabric, with a
smaller cell, is perfect for compact spaces and in
particular, bi-fold doors.
Hive is a superior fabric choice for blinds due to
its anti-static, heat blocking, sound absorbent and
firm structure that holds its shape. Hive is available
in plain, blackout, fire retardant and luxury designs.
If your customers are looking to create a natural
atmosphere, Hive Plain is available in a selection of
neutral tones that subtly soften light coming into a
room. Hive Blackout is ideal for those who wish
additional light control within a room in a wide
range of neutral and bright tones as well as on
trend designs. Safety is an important aspect for
everyone, and Hive Blackout FR offers all the
properties of a standard blackout but with flame
retardant features, to promote a safe environment
for your customer’s home.
Hive Lusso is a premium woven Hive fabric
which was developed with a high-quality finish, full
tone on both sides and available in 5 colours. Hive
Deluxe holds the same properties as a standard
Hive but in a softer fabric feel that is available in 6
colours.
The Hive collection also includes three luxury
designs; Silkweave and Matrix that are available in
standard and blackout fabrics as well as Geo that is
a blackout only fabric.

Style Group has
launched a new
line of high tech
fabrics that kills
the coronavirus
Style Group has launched two highly
innovative products in the fight against
COVID-19, expected to be available to
retailers in the UK this year.
The UK-based company, which has production
plants in Spain, the Netherlands and Romania,
manufactures fabrics for the home, business and
hotel industry, has launched a new line of fabric
technologies that are made up of Antivaltex - a new
fabric that kills corona type viruses at the very
contact, and Aircleantex - a fabric that transforms
ultraviolet light and purifies the air.
Antiviraltex and Aircleantex have been proven to
eliminate coronaviruses and the flu virus, meeting
the requirements of the ISO and following the
testing and approval of Microbiological Solutions
LTC UK.
Brooks Hayward, director of global business
development at Style Group: "It important that as
leading manufacturers of window covers, we are
providing a solution that enables our customers to
sell innovative, life enhancing products. The
introduction of Antiviraltex and Aircleantex into all
types of fabric materials for hotels, offices, and
homes, will give customers peace of mind when
selling our products, that puts the consumer and
their health, front of mind”.
“We expect to see interest in our innovative
fabrics and we are proud to announce that our
clients in the UK will soon be able to sell these
technologically advanced and potentially life changing
fabrics”.
Style Group's CEO, Juan Albertini: “It’s been a long
time in the making and these innovative fabrics are
set to revolutionise our market. Anti-viral protection

Junkers & Mullers
has a range of
natural fabrics to
choose from
The Junkers & Müllers product range has
already reflected the continuing trend
towards natural structures in various ways.
Now this area is once again seeing a significant
expansion. A diverse selection of yarns creates an
appealing spectrum of fabric structures that set new
accents, especially in our collection of blackout blinds.
An entire product line of individual fabric novelties
ranges from fine melanges with a silky sheen, as in
PRATO, to the rustic bast fiber character of
BAMBOO. With its grainy pepper and salt look,
ANCONA creates a comfortable atmosphere. And
the coarse linen texture of ATRIO is just right for
contemporary country style interiors. With its mixed
colour nuances, Merino, the latest addition to the
collection, constitutes a solid classic for youthful and
cozy living environments.
These fabrics look as natural as jute and linen,
while offering the stable hanging properties of
polyester fabrics. The color palettes range from cool
white and silver colours to soft beige to warm sand
and earth tones.

Sliding home
KE introduces the
new LINE GLASS
sliding closing
system, design and
performance for
maximum comfort
Designing buildings with increasingly open
and transparent spaces is one of the
current architectural trends: the
contribution of natural light, in fact, is one of the
fundamental factors for the well-being of individuals.
KE's innovation is able to guarantee these pluses
with LINE GLASS, the new closing system consisting
of sliding windows on tracks. Easy to install and
without perimeter profiles, it ensures maximum
design versatility and completely exclusive functions.
All this, with the reliability, safety and design of a
product entirely Made in Italy.
The ideal solution for living your own pergola,
sheltered from wind, rain and noise, the system is
characterized by its linear design: for example, the
square handle in satin finish is specially designed to
enhance its minimal aesthetics, demonstrating the care
of details that have always characterized KE design.
Consisting of a powder coated aluminium
structure and 10 mm tempered glass panels
supported by backdrops containing the sliding
system, LINE GLASS allows you to create real large
glass screens (up to 7 m wide by 3 m high). Thanks
to the reduced dimensions and the "all glass" effect,
it increases the brightness of the rooms, allowing
you to live in close contact with the surrounding
landscape, in a continuous dialogue between indoor
and outdoor living spaces.
The multiple configurations that can be created,
with 3, 4 or 5-way tracks, allow the choice between
lateral or central closure. The closing components of
the backdrops themselves are innovative: they
simplify installation, allow a perfectly linear packaging
of the panels, with a fluid sliding, and simplify
cleaning procedures.
Thanks to the lower rail only 18 mm high and the
possibility of integrating a ramp that facilitates the
passage of prams and strollers, LINE GLASS
guarantees easy access for the elderly and children,
for unique and comfortable environments.

Play mist for me
KE Outdoor Design
focuses on hygiene
and safety and
introduces KE
COOL & SAFE - the
integrated misting
system
The request for an ever-greater guarantee of
hygiene and sanitization of surfaces and
environments is a topic to which we are
particularly sensitive today. Never as in this period,
clean and protected spaces are essential to be sure
of enjoying outdoor spaces in total safety, for the
protection of one's family or customers and
patrons.
KE is ready to respond to these needs with an
innovative solution: KE COOL & SAFE, an
integrated misting system created for two of the
main pergolas models of the GENNIUS range.
Available as an optional for the bioclimatic Kedry
Prime and Isola 3 with low roof, KE COOL & SAFE
combines multiple new functions:
• COOLING: allows to pressurize the water by
means of a high-pressure pumping system, creating -
through special nozzles - an ultra-fine mist that
allows a drop in temperature in the affected area;
• SANITIZATION: by pressurizing a mixture of
water and hydrogen peroxide by means of the
same high-pressure pumping system, it is possible to
sanitize rooms and surfaces, as well as the pergola
itself, if it is equipped with side closings;
• ESSENCE VAPORIZER / ANTI-MOSQUITO
PROTECTION: the system is adaptable to
pressurize a mixture of water combined with
essential oils to create a pleasant relaxing
atmosphere. In summer it will be possible to create
mixtures with specific oils such as lemongrass that
will help keep mosquitoes away.
Ideal in convivial environments, both residential
and commercial, contract and hospitality, the KE
COOL & SAFE system allows, by simply installing
the pergolas equipped with this accessory, to have
the security of an instant sanitization, as well as
always guaranteeing outdoor spaces protected. A
new sense of comfort for those who do not want
to give up living outdoors as a bespoke wellness
space.

Range for every room
S:Craft has a range
of shutters for
every room
It’s sometimes easy to forget that within one
house, there can be many different needs and
wants for window coverings. Houses, rooms,
customers, and budgets all differ and, as industry
experts, it’s our job to make sure everyone walks
away completely happy with the outcome of a
consultation and fit.
At S:CRAFT, we would of course be happy if
every home were fitted with top quality plantation
shutters throughout, a high-ticket item which always
looks stylish and is great for light control, privacy,
and insulation. By focussing exclusively on shutters
however, you may miss out on extra opportunities
through the house. Perhaps they want a softer
fabric blind for the living room, or a patterned finish
to complement their furnishings. Kids or pets can
mean high likelihood of damage and wear and tear
meaning that customers are reluctant to invest in
shutters in some rooms.
These are the reasons we at S:CRAFT are
expanding our blinds range. Following the success of
our venetian and honeycomb blinds, we have
selected fantastic quality products you can use to
ensure that you are prepared for every eventuality.
This will enable you to get maximum value from
each customer consultation and deliver to the
customer the convenience and peace of mind that
comes from having one company fitting their whole
house throughout, with consistent quality in product
and fit. It will also improve the chances that your
business card is the one they have to hand for
recommendations or repeat business.
As you’d expect from S:CRAFT, high quality point
of sale materials and our award-winning training will
be available, so you can consult and fit with
confidence. Keep an eye out for our launch emails
and webinars in the near future and don’t miss the
opportunity to maximise your sales.

of blinds for every
situation
With their innovative and flexible
technology, INTU blinds are suitable
for PVC, tilt and turn windows, as well
as glazed and bi-fold doors. The unique properties
of the blind type allow windows and doors to open
and close freely while the blinds are in place.
Complementary in both design and function- INTU
blinds are an intelligent choice for today’s homes.
INTU is available in hive, pleated, venetian and roller
blinds including blackout, privacy and micro options.
There are a wide range of colours, textures, designs
and finishes to choose from.
To complete the look, match any INTU blind to
your window frame with a selection of white,
silver, brown or anthracite finishes. Not only that
but all INTU products are child safe by design to
give complete peace of mind.
Let’s talk INTU Micro. It can be hard to fit a
blind for bi-fold doors or compact spaces. The
Slimline INTU Micro system has been designed to
combat this problem. You can choose from a
range of hive and pleated fabrics which can be
used in both bi-fold doors or windows that
require a more compact blind option. INTU Micro
allows you to close and open doors with the blind
in place, and with a smaller pleat/cell size it adds a
subtle finish to a room. It is suitable for universal
bead types with a squared or bead and also has a
guided option available – the guided endcaps
restrain the bottom bar and prevent unwanted
movement of the blind specially designed for bifold
door use. There are also three coloured rails
white, anthracite and brown that will suit bi-fold
door finishes.
