Since 2011 boomsatsuma has been an innovative provider of creative
post 16 education. Now with over 500 students, we are one of the
most respected colleges in the region with average grades repeatedly

Extended Diploma

Our new Extended Diploma Dance programme is designed to encourage you to
develop as an independent artist and grow into a confident, creative dance practitioner.
Led by Adele Proctor and a team of professional dancers and choreographers, the
course will develop your technical and expressive skills. You’ll learn how to combine
the versatility, creativity and drive you need to meet the challenges of the competitive
and demanding dance profession of today.
The course is based on a conservatoire dance school model tailored for 16-18 year
olds. It focuses on contemporary dance, physical theatre, urban and jazz as well as
world dance styles to develop you as a versatile artist. It is intensive and demanding
with on average 21 hours a week of class with the standards and expectations of a
professional dancer in training to prepare you for a career in dance.

Technique class.
Throughout the two years you’ll have four technique classes a week. Every week
there will be a contemporary class, in addition to two of the following, which
are rotated termly, throughout the year:
Urban dance – including Hip-Hop, Reggaeton and Carnival
Physical Theatre
. Musical Theatre and Jazz
In addition, there is a unit titled Global Dance styles, where you will learn
dances from other cultures, their origins, spiritual or ritual significance,
costumes, music and traditions, such as:
Capoeira
Flamenco
Classical Indian dance
. Traditional African dance
Contemporary technique is at the foundation of professional dance training.
Over the course you will cover the established technical styles of Limon,
Graham, Cunningham, Paxton, Horton and Release; as well as movement
content that is current and new. Repertory Dance Performance allows us to
study the work of famous choreographers in a practical sense, developing this
work in to a performance inspired by their work.

assess your potential to join the course. Though experience of dance,
drama or expressive arts are advantageous in giving you a sense of
what’s involved, we are more interested in raw talent and welcome your
application even if you have had little or no experience.

You will need to be on track to get at least five GCSE grades 4 - 9
including Maths and English or BTEC Level 2 Diplomas (at merit or
distinction). In exceptional cases we can take students who don’t have
GCSE English or Maths at grade 4 or above and we can provide tuition in
those qualifications alongside the course.

Programme fully funded for students ages 16-18 at the start of their
course. Students will be eligible to apply for a discretionary bursary.
Auditions are also free of charge.Students will be expected to contribute
to the cost of trips.
what’s next?
Many of our students are aiming to secure a place at dance
school or one of the new conservatoire style performance
courses at universities. Getting into Performing arts school at
the first attempt is difficult but our team have over 25 years
experience of both supporting students through auditions and
sitting on the audition panels themselves. Students may apply to
schools such as Laban Centre London; London Contemporary
Dance school; Urdang; Central dance studios or Northern
Contemporary; Or they may wish to take on their studies closer
to home at Bath Spa University or Welsh College of Drama and
Music, Cardiff.
Or students may want to go on to study courses that lead to
becoming a fitness instructor or personal trainer, taking on a
more therapeutic form of career.
However, it’s important to note that the qualification is
considered a passport to a wider range of performing arts,
media and humanities subjects at many universities and
choosing this course does not close down your
university options.

frankie johnson .
House & Hip Hop
Originally from Bristol, Frankie is a rare individual who matches his raw natural dance talent with hard
work and discipline, developing into one of the best representing House Dancers of his generation.
Having trained from a young age in numerous dance disciplines - both within contemporary and forms
of Street Dance, Frankie was selected to be part of the Swindon Youth Dance Academy where he was
mentored by some of the best instructors in the UK. From there, he went on to earn a First Class degree
in contemporary dance from London Contemporary Dance School at The Place, graduating in 2013.
Upon finishing his studies, Frankie has focussed mainly on the House Dance style, gaining respect and
numerous titles at worldwide competitions and events such as House Dance Europe, IBE, Flavourama,
Urban Moves, Step Ya Game Up, Juste Debout & Summer Dance Forever. He was also invited to join
Plague Dance Crew & InDaHouse in 2012, Deep Manners in 2018 and Sour Patch Collective - Worldwide
in 2019. Now, Frankie’s aim is to share his vision of embodying and combining his physical and mental
understanding of his body in harmonising his technical background and training, with his contribution of
preserving House music and House Dance Culture of his generation.
Lewis, from Bristol, has been dancing for the past 13 years and is trained as a hiphop dancer. He studied
Dance at Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts (LIPA) for 3 years and graduated in 2016. Lewis will be
teaching Hiphop and Commercial Dance.

Commercial Hip Hop
Penny trained in musical theatre at The Arts Educational School, Tring Park and studied dance &
performing arts at LIPA (Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts), where she went on to become a lecturer
in dance & movement for 10 years. As a performer and choreographer, Penny has worked in many areas
of theatre & arts including stage, film and events in the UK and abroad. Alongside this she has 18 years of
experience delivering vocational theatrical training as well as facilitating community dance projects in the
northwest and southwest.
As well as delivering on the dance course at boomsatsuma, she is a lecturer at BIPA (Bristol Institute for
Performing Arts). Penny is also co-director and founder of dance company Movema, specialising in world
dance and community arts.

Musical Theatre & Jazz
Chevon Edwards received a BPA Degree in Contemporary Dance from the specialist conservatoire,
Northern School of Contemporary Dance. After graduating she then went on to perform and teach
dance with a variety of UK based dance companies as well as continuing to deepen her practice through
International workshops and professional classes.

Contemporary & Repertory
Lizzie trained at the prestigious Bird College in London, studying on the Professional Dance and Musical
Theatre course. Here she studied in a wide range of dance styles including ballet, tap, musical theatre,
commercial, contemporary and Jazz. She also studied acting through song and singing. Lizzie has been
performing for over 18 years in various theatres and performance spaces across the UK and recently
played the role of Princess Fiona in Shrek the Musical at the Theatre Royal, Bath. Teaching has always
been a passion of hers, as she enjoys helping young people develop their skills, strength and love for
dance and musical theatre.

Improvisation & Composition,
Ensemble Dance
Deepraj Singh first started dancing in afterschool capoeira sessions at the age of 8. From there his interest
in movement and musicality began to grow. He joined Bristol based youth dance company Kinesis and
continued his movement exploration at Cotham School where dance was taught as part of the curriculum.
He continued his training via the CAT (Centre of Advanced Training) programme run in Swindon, and did
a year on the urban strand and two years on the contemporary strand before successfully auditioning for
London Contemporary Dance School. Deepraj was awarded the Duke of York scholarship whilst training
at London Contemporary Dance School and graduated with a first in July 2015. After graduating he is
working as a freelance dancer and has toured professional pieces internationally such as the Akademi’s
‘The Troth’. Deepraj draws upon his urban dance techniques when creating pieces, which are rhythmically
explorative and emotionally driven. He is an explorative urban improviser with a keen sense of rhythm and
beatboxing/vocal percussion skills.
Issie has trained in a variety of street dance styles such as Locking, Hip Hop Socials, House, Funk, Popping
and Dancehall. Issie has spent a lot of time travelling the world to enhance her skills, foundations and
knowledge in these styles and the Afro-Brazilian art form ‘Capoeira’ which she has also trained in for 11
years. Issie spent focused training time in LA, Las Vegas, Ethiopia and Brazil. She also participated in a
variety intense CPD courses with Tony GoGo, Scoo B Doo, Poppin Pete, Ken Swift and Mr Wiggles. Issie
performed at the opening ceremony of the 2012 Olympics in London. This experience broadened her
horizons and created further networks and dance opportunities throughout the UK. Her ongoing passion
is to pass on the skills and knowledge gained and to grow the social dance scene throughout Bristol.

Hip Hop Socials & Dancehall
Helen trained as an apprentice in a professional company led by Phoenix Dance founders. They taught
her the importance of technique, creative and performance skills but also skills to be an artist, leadership,
teamwork, teaching etc. Helen went on to dance with companies like RJC Dance company, Les Commandos
Percu and Neshima Dance as well as project work with other companies. She is extremely passionate about
helping to develop emerging artists. Helen is now the Youth Dance Hub champion with Bristol Dance
Futures where she is part of a team that moves dance for children and young people forwards in the city.

Contemporary & Carnival (Soca)
Bryn trained at London Contemporary Dance School, winning the Charlotte Kirkpatrick scholarship
for exceptional potential. He then joined VERVE, the postgraduate performance company that toured
internationally. He has completed an MA in dance performance, entitled: “The Complicit Virtuoso-
Analysing the relationship between virtuosity and neoliberal ideology, and the implications of this for
the contemporary dance artist” through the Northern School of Contemporary Dance in partnership
with the University of Kent. Bryn has performed with Julia Thorneycroft dance, Humannah productions,
aboutNOWish, Bitter Suite, Luca Silvistrini’s Protein, Lisa May Thomas and Myrtle Theatre Company and
has choreographed for Tessa Bide, Myrtle Theatre Company, and Vic Llewellyn & Kid Carpet.

Contemporary
Julia is one of Bristol’s leading dance practitioners, known chiefly as Artistic Director of both her own
company Julia Thorneycroft Dance and Kinesis Youth Dance Company. She trained at the Laban Centre
and Middlesex University and received an MA in Creative Producing from UWE.
As a choreographer her work includes Ladies of the Landfill (2017), a commission for Spindrift; Immersion,
a VR project with Zubr and Watershed, shown at Watershed and Edge Arts, Bath; Hive (2015) performed as
part of Bristol Green Capital, Endeavour; Northcott, Exeter/emerge festival, London/Devizes International
street art festival/Falmouth University/Trinity Bristol; Frustra (2014), Resolutions! ThePlace/ Bites:remix,
Albany, Deptford/Dartington/Practice, ICIA/Northcott, Exeter/Bristol Harbourside: New Work, Surface and
Identity all for the Harbourside Festival, Bristol.
