What test items are typically done on lithium batteries?
In recent years, there have been frequent lithium-ion battery safety incidents. After lithium-ion
batteries are manufactured and before they reach consumers, a series of tests need to be
performed to ensure battery safety and reduce safety hazards. The following are the common
test items.
1. Crush test: The fully charged battery is placed on a flat surface, the hydraulic cylinder is applied
with 13 ± 1KN squeeze pressure, the battery is squeezed by the plane of a 32mm diameter
steel rod, once the squeeze pressure reaches the maximum stop squeezing, the battery does not
catch fire, and does not explode.
2. Impact test: When the battery is fully charged, place it on a plane, place a 15.8mm diameter
steel column vertically in the center of the battery, and drop the weight of 9.1kg from a height of
610mm to the steel column above the battery. The battery will not catch fire or explode.
3. Over-charging test: the battery will be fully charged with 1C, in accordance with 3C
over-charging 10V over-charging test, when the battery over-charging voltage rises to a certain
voltage, stable for a period of time, close to a certain time when the battery voltage rises rapidly,
when the rise to a certain limit, the battery high cap pull off, the voltage falls to 0V, the battery
does not catch fire and explode.
4. Short circuit test: After the battery is fully charged, short-circuit the positive and negative poles
of the battery with a wire whose resistance is not higher than 50m Ω , test the surface
temperature change of the battery, the highest temperature of the battery surface is 140℃, pull
the cap of the battery, and the battery will not catch fire or explode.
5. Nail Penetration test: Place the fully charged battery on a plane and pierce the battery with a
3mm diameter steel needle in a radial direction. The test battery does not catch fire, does not
explode.
6. Temperature cycling test: lithium ion battery temperature cycling test is used to simulate the
safety of lithium ion battery during transport or storage, repeated exposure to low and high
temperature environment, lithium ion battery, the test is conducted using rapid and extreme
temperature changes. After the test, the sample should not catch fire, not explode, no leakage.
After passing the above various tests, the lithium battery can basically guarantee safety. Of
course, this is relatively safe, because lithium batteries will fail due to various reasons. These tests
can only ensure that no failure occurs within the range of normal use.
