Introduction

In this present work of English subject is taking about number and date. In the number

part we will talk cardinal and ordinal numbers. Number is a count or measurement.

They are really an idea in our minds. We write or talk about numbers using numerals

such as "5" or "five". We could also hold up 5 fingers, or tap the table 5 times. These

are all different ways of referring to the same number.

Numbers and dates

Number is a mathematical object used to count, measure, and label. The original

examples are the natural numbers 1, 2, 3, 4, and so forth.

Ordinal numbers

Ordinal numbers are: First, second, third, fourth, etc. First, second, and third are

irregular, but we form the others by adding -th to the cardinal number,

e.g. ten- tenth, or changing the ending –ty to –tieth, e.g. forty -fortieth. When we use

figures, we write the cardinal number and add the last two letters of the ordinal number.

E.g. 4 + th = 4th.

Dates

Date is defined as a particularly day of the month or day, month and year or a social

outing between two people. An example of date is October 9, 1925. ... The definition of

date is to belong to a particular time period or to assign a time period to something or to

go out with someone due to romantic interests

There are the three most common ways of writing the date in English.

Cardinal number + month: 3 May 15 August

Ordinal number + month: 3rd May 15th August

Month + cardinal number: May 3 August 15

Ordinal numbers, e.g. 15th, are becoming less usual.

‘The third of May’ ‘the fifteenth of August’

Telling the time and dates

Some countries, including the US, Canada, and Australia, use the 12-hour clock format

including am and pm. What do these abbreviations mean? Is midnight am or pm?

Telling the time in 12 and 24 hour clock

The 12-hour system divides the 24 hours of a day into two periods lasting 12 hours

each. The first 12-hour period is designated as am. It runs from midnight to noon. The

second period, marked pm, covers the 12 hours from noon to midnight.

The abbreviation-ns am and pm derive from Latin:

AM = Ante meridiem: Before noon

PM = Post meridiem: After noon

Using numbers from 1 to 12, followed by am or pm, the 12-hour clock system identifies

all 24 hours of the day. For example, 5 am is early in the morning (five o’clock), and 5

pm is late in the afternoon (seventeen o’clock); 1 am is one hour after midnight, while

11 pm is one hour before midnight.

However, most digital clocks and most sources, including time and designate midnight

as 12 am and noon as 12 pm. Although the precise moment of noon falls in neither

category, the hour succeeding it, from 12:00:01 to 12:59:59, is clearly after noon.To

avoid any confusion when referring to the precise moment of noon or midnight, we

recommend using the designations 12 noon and 12 midnight instead.

7

Conclusion

Ending this work we conclude that numbers can be represented in language with

number words. More universally, individual numbers can be represented by symbols,

called numerals; for example, "5" is a numeral that represents the number five. As only

a relatively small number of symbols can be memorized, basic numerals are commonly

organized in a numeral system, which is an organized way to represent any number.
