Important dates for Self Assessment
Self assessment tax return is important once a taxpayer has other income besides regular PAYE
income.
5th October: Register for SA
If you haven’t filed a SA tax return any time before, you should register to do so by 5th October of
the following year in order to submit the tax return.
31 October – Paper tax return due
This one is the filing deadline for paper-based tax return. In case you get any information from
HMRC for filing a tax return then you must return the completed form within the 3 months of the
date of the issue on the notice. If in any case you missed the deadline the don’t hesitate for late self

30 December – Select PAYE
When you file your tax return online, you’re required to submit it by 30 December, once you’ve
employment or pension income, and you want HMRC to gather self-employed tax via your PAYE tax
code. You can only do this while you owe less than £3,000.
31 January – Online tax returns due
All tax returns filed online are mandatory to be submitted by this date. If in any case you miss this
deadline a penalty will be charged even if you have no tax to pay, or have already paid all of the tax
you owe.
