PRESIDENT’sWELCOMEAs the new President of ConnachtRugby, it gives me great pleasureto introduce this digital programmefor our opening game ofthe 2020/21 season.I’d like to begin on a personal note bythanking all those who have sent me wellwishes since my election a number ofweeks ago. I am truly honoured to hold thisposition and, while it will be a season unlikeany other, I hope to make the most of it.I am of course conscious that my electionis also a significant step for every womaninvolved in Irish rugby. I’d be lying if I saidthe all the attention hasn’t been slightlyoverwhelming at times, but I am extremelyproud that my own province has becomethe first professional rugby team in Irelandto elect a female President.My hope now is that my election inspiresmore women to get involved in rugby, notjust in Connacht but anywhere in Ireland.Rugby has given me so much – going backto when I grew up in Mayo to my associationwith Tuam RFC and the ConnachtRugby Supporter’s Club. If you are on thefence about joining your local club – nomatter your gender – I cannot encourage itenough.Today marks the culmination of months ofhard work both on and off the field to makethis day a reality. We have had some darkdays as a society in the past few monthsas COVID-19 affected all walks of life, andunfortunately, we are not out of the woodsyet. However, my wish today and for therest of the season is that this ConnachtRugby team becomes a beacon of hopeand inspiration for you when times aretough. For two hours each week you canput aside any worries you may have andsupport your local province who are thereto represent you.I’d also like to welcome today’s visitors GlasgowWarriors to The Sportsground, and to wish thema safe & healthy journey back to Scotland latertoday.To our Official Partners and Business Clubmembers, thank you for your ongoing support,particularly in such a challenging economic environment.Finally, I would like to thank every volunteerwho, in some shape or form, has helped us towardsa ‘Return To Rugby’ at pitches all aroundthe province. Your efforts and commitmenthave been an inspiration to all us and haveshown the very best of the Connacht people.Whether you’re one of the very fortunate at theground, or one of the thousands watching athome, enjoy the game.Connacht Abú!Ann Heneghan
