PAPA SEZ is published monthly by the Palwaukee<br />

Airport Pilot’s Association (a non-profit organization).<br />

The Palwaukee Airport Pilot’s Association<br />

(PAPA) was formed in 1987 as a forum for the users<br />

of Palwaukee Airport. PAPA’s mission is to promote<br />

the safety of operations and continued development<br />

of the Palwaukee Municipal Airport in a<br />

fraternal environment with the pilots, users and<br />

community.<br />

Membership in PAPA is open to any user of<br />

Palwaukee Airport. Membership dues are $30.00<br />

annually and include a subscription to PAPA SEZ.<br />

Palwaukee’s “Grand Old Man”<br />

George Priester Dies<br />

The man who built a multi-runway general aviation reliever<br />

airport from an unimproved 100 acre field with gravel runways<br />

died in his sleep at his Inverness home August 17 th .<br />

George Priester who owned the airport from 1953 to 1986<br />

was 98. In a Mount Prospect funeral service, Priester was<br />

remembered as an aviation visionary who believed that the<br />

future of general aviation lay not only in the sales of aircraft,<br />

but in the services that pilots and passengers would need.<br />

“He decided in the early 1940’s that the airplane would be a<br />

big tool in transportation,” said his son Charlie Priester, Priester<br />

Aviation’s Chairman. The intervening years proved him right.<br />

Priester’s love of aviation began in1928 when he was offered<br />

a plane ride in exchange for helping to fix the aircraft’s engine.<br />

Over his father’s objections, he quickly went on to<br />

earn his private pilot’s license and purchase a Hess Warrior<br />

Argo aircraft. Ten years later in 1938 he officially entered<br />

the world of aviation commerce beginning as an instrument<br />

Instructor Pilot for the War Training Service. After the war,<br />

while still working for The Chicago and Northwestern Railroad,<br />

he opened a pilot instrument training school at the<br />

airport known as Palwaukee, a named coined from its location<br />

at the intersection of Palatine and Milwaukee Avenues.<br />

Here Priester trained and tested more than 1,700 pilots for<br />

the Civil Aviation Authority and its successor Federal Aviation<br />

Authority. Priester continued flying his Beech Stagerwing<br />

“Camel Caravan Newsliner” for news organizations and in 1953,<br />

purchased the airport outright quitting his railroad position<br />

two years later. Dignitaries he flew included presidential candidates<br />

Gerald Ford and Jimmy Carter.<br />

Over the next 30 years, Priester grew Palwaukee into a major<br />

reliever airport for O’Hare field, boasting multiple FBO’s,<br />

maintenance services, flight schools and hundreds of based<br />

aircraft. In 1986 George Priester sold the airport to the City<br />

of Prospect Heights and the Village of Wheeling “in order to<br />

preserve it,” says his son Charlie. Priester was concerned<br />

about people building large structures around the airport<br />

and creating obstacles for the runway. As a municipal airport,<br />

it would be protected and it would qualify for aviation<br />

improvement grants.<br />

Among the lifetime honors he received, Priester was inducted<br />

as a member of the Illinois Aviation Honor Roll, was named<br />

Man of the Year in Transportation by the City of Chicago in<br />

1973, and in 1988 was the recipient of the National Air Transportation<br />

Association’s William T. Ong Award.<br />

The PAPA summer 2006 Young Eagles rally is set for Saturday,<br />

September 16 th at Atlantic’s executive terminal on Palwaukee’s<br />

west side. Formerly known as North American Jet, then Trajen,<br />

the new Atlantic FBO inhabits the same building as its predecessors<br />

and remains the home for the PAPA Young Eagle program<br />

at Palwaukee. Kids from 7 to 17 are welcome and are<br />

encouraged to sign up through the Young Eagles hotline: 847-<br />

883-8388. “All you have to do,” said Young Eagles Coordinator<br />

Richard Steinbrecher, “is follow the recorded menu. Parents<br />

can leave kids’ names and addresses and the Young Eagles<br />

scheduler will get back to them with a check-in time for the<br />

rally.” After 07:30 on the morning of the rally, pilots, parents,<br />

kids or volunteers can call the hotline and check the status<br />

of the rally. If the event is delayed postponed or canceled,<br />

that information will be on the hotline.<br />

Pre-registration is encouraged, but walkups can be accommodated<br />

on an as-available basis. Each child must have a<br />

parent’s or guardian’s written permission and a responsible<br />

adult must accompany the children. Registration forms will<br />

be available at the rally. For further information, call 847-579-<br />

PAPA’S Short Approach<br />

“Air Reserves in Action”<br />

On Aug. 18, 2006, The Palwaukee Squadron of the Civil Air Patrol,<br />

with 24 Seniors and Cadets motorcade to Grissom Air Reserve<br />

Base in central Indiana. Grissom ARB, was named after<br />

LTC Virgil I. “Gus” Grissom, one of America’s original seven<br />

astronauts who was killed during a fire in his Apollo capsule.<br />

The base is home to the 434 th Air Refueling Wing and is one of<br />

only four Air Reserve Bases in the nation.<br />

Palwaukee Sqd. CAP was allowed to observe an Air Reserve inflight<br />

refueling mission, over the central U.S. at 28,000 feet. I<br />

was fortunate enough to sit in the jump-seat during takeoff.<br />

We were flying the latest KC135R (new engines and glass cockpit),<br />

and were number two in a flight of two KC135’s.<br />

We took off and headed southbound as we gained altitude for<br />

our rendezvous with an E-3 AWACS .<br />

After refueling the E-3, we flew northbound for our second<br />

rendezvous with four F-16, Fighting Falcons from Fort Wayne.<br />

One of Palwaukee Squadrons members is Major Litvan of the<br />

IANG, who had a flight of four F-16’s. When he joined the tanker<br />

for the refueling, he displayed the Palwaukee Squadron CAP<br />

patch in his canopy. Palwalukee Sqd. is probably the only squadron<br />

who can make this claim. Wow!<br />

One of our Cadets was promoted in-flight at 28,000 feet, and<br />

that was quite an honor. To say that we enjoyed ourselves<br />

would be a gross understatement. What a day in heaven.<br />

Everyone one of us can’t thank our Air Reservists crew (Pilot,<br />

Co-Pilot, Flight Engineer and Boom Operator), enough for our<br />

experience and the professionalism which they displayed, and<br />

we were allowed to participate in. Our salute is to all the men<br />

and woman of our United States Military, for their service to<br />

our country, especially during this time of war against terrorism.

during periods of low visibility. The system consists of a row of white<br />

lights on each side of the runway centerline. They start 100 feet<br />
