Understanding our experiences and exploring how the systems designed around us
are defining who is included or not, is critical to creating more inclusive workplaces.
Think about the groups that are underrepresented in your organization. Now try to
free-write for five minutes about which challenges they would face to enter and/or be
successful in your organization.
Example: I understand the impact of representation, meaning, seeing someone who
looks like me in certain roles and could always see my gender and race represented
throughout the organization, including at the top leadership, but I can see how a
women and or a black person would be challenged to believe that they could be
accepted based on how the leadership of my organization looked for years.
Now with your words, imagine someone who has a visible disability working in
your team. Think about words that are used by you and your colleagues, your office
environment, and describe the potential issues they would face.
