O’GaraFranklin Veterans Agent DaleKurtz notes that the latest brickinstallation at the Franklin VeteransMemorial Walkway willtake place before November11th, Veterans Day, this year.Although a luncheon honoringveterans usually takes place atFranklin Senior Center, this year,because of Covid-19, said Kurtz,“I’ll be taping a virtual VeteransDay program, where I’m goingto focus on veterans, then it willbe played on local TV on VeteransDay and days thereafter.” Atpress time, Kurtz was contactingdifferent veterans, inviting themto participate. The program, hesaid, would include interviewswith non-veterans as well, askingthem “What does Veterans Daymean to you?”“I just wanted to focus on themeaning of the day and reallyhone in on how special our vetsare,” said Kurtz.In addition to the virtual celebrationof veterans, membersof the Franklin American LegionEdward L. Grant Post 75 will beholding small celebrations, notopen to the public, for veteransat local assisted living centers intown, said Kurtz.When asked what top concernsare among local veterans,Kurtz replied that issues ofCovid-19 are “amplified for ourvets. I look at my older veterans,who maybe live alone – they’revery isolated now. They usedto be able to come to our seniorcenter or veterans’events, and with that(isolation) comesconcerns aboutsuicide.” Suchissues, he said,have been thesubject of discussionsin theVSO and theVA.”“There’s alsoconcern about domesticabuse,” saysKurtz. “(Being together)24/7, sometimes you can rubeach other the wrong way, andthen because you’re isolated, andbecause you can’t go out, youmay have an extra drink, andtensions rise, and we’ve got anissue. Those are thingsI worry about withmy veterans, andI just want themto be healthyand to be safe.”Kurtz encourageslocalveterans toreach out to theVA Crisis line.Veterans having acrisis or those whoknow a veteran experiencingissues can call 800-273-8255 and press 1, send a textmessage to 838255, or chat onlineat VeteransCrisisLine.net/Chat. Locally, Kurtz encouragesveterans experiencing substanceabuse or domestic violence issuesto reach out to the SAFECoalition, which serves 9 localcommunities and is located rightin Norfolk. The SAFE Coalitionsupport hotline can be reached at(508) 488-8105. Kurtz explainedthat veterans can also head toa Veterans Center, the nearestbeing in Brockton, although vetcenters are located in Boston andWorcester as well.“They’re fantastic, with counselors,doctors on staff,” saidKurtz.
