Irish Screen Careers Survey Key Findings
1. Only 14% of respondents believe the statement “The Screen Industries are a meritocracy, that
is, promotions are based only on individual performance?” fit the Irish Screen Industries well
or somewhat well.
2. 77% of respondents believe the statement “Workforce diversity (e.g. employees with a broad
range of experience, ethnicity, gender, age) is a top priority” probably does not or definitely
does not describe the Irish Screen Industries.
3. 86 % of respondents believe that sponsorship from senior industry practitioners is either
extremely important or very important in the determination of career progression. The
remainder believe it is somewhat important.
4. 100% of female respondents believe that gender is extremely important, very important or
somewhat important in the determination of career progression.
5. 72% of respondents and 84% of female respondents believe that family commitments /
pregnancy are extremely important, very important or somewhat important in determining
career progression in the Irish Screen Industries.
6. 81% of respondents believe that in the Irish Screen Industries women, non-binary and
transgender members have fewer opportunities than men.
7. 81% of respondents and 100% of female respondents believe that gender has played a role in
their missing out on a raise, promotion, key assignment, or chance to get ahead.
8. 50% of respondents and 69% of female respondents believe that family circumstances or
pregnancy have played a role in their missing out on a raise, promotion, key assignment,
chance to get ahead.
9. 68% of respondents and 100% of female respondents believe that gender will make it harder
for them to advance in their careers.
10. 36% of respondents believe ethnicity makes a difference to career advancement in the Irish
Screen Industries.
11. Going forward 54% of respondents and 69% female respondents believe that family
circumstances / pregnancy will make their career progression harder.
12. 50% of respondents and 61% of female respondents have experienced bullying.
13. 40% of respondents and 61% of female respondents have experienced sexual harassment.
14. 54% of respondents and 69% of female respondents have witnessed bullying or harassment
and were too afraid to intervene.
15. 50% of respondents earn under €15,000 for their work in the Irish Screen Industries annually.
