One thing I have learnt as a DJ during the past year, is never take a party or a
gig for granted. The whole world, my world can change over night. I think 2020
has posed many questions most of us never thought we'd have to answer in
our lifetime, including: "What does music mean in a world of self-isolation?" If
dance music isn't enjoyed and celebrated the way it was intended -- in
communal spaces like concert halls, dance clubs, bars and even private parties
-- can it even really still be called dance music? Off course the the answer is
yes. History has proven over and over that during times of depression, war
and other disasters, somehow artists’ creativity thrives. With the outbreak of
Covid-19 came self-isolation and many, if not every single human being on this
planet turned to music for hope and inspiration. During quarantine and lock
downs world-wide, music remained as meaningful as ever, even just as the
soundtrack to such menial activities as doing the dishes, taking a walk around
the block or just sitting at home and wondering when or if things will feel
normal again. As difficult as this period has been, I doubt we could've gotten
by without these songs -- and I look forward to making up for lost time with
them at whatever point we're finally able to celebrate them publicly.
