He was popularin the area because he, too, was apioneer, a trait that was played upduring the campaign. Although hedidn’t campaign in Evansville, thetownspeople came out for him in abig way. They threw a huge parade,the first that ten-year-old Jane eversaw.A few days before the election,Harrison supporters came frommiles around to march in the paradedown Riverside. General Evansand his granddaughter watchedthe parade floats as they passed bytheir front yard, with the marchingpeople showing their support forHarrison. One of the floats was a logcabin, representingHarrison’sfirst home. Themen on the float,wearing thebuckskin clothingand coonskin hats of theearly pioneers,stopped in frontof Gen. Consequently, early steamboatspassed by Evansville as theytraveled downriver from Pittsburgh,Cincinnati, or Louisville, to theMississippi River and eventuallyNew Orleans. There were exceptions:when a passenger disembarked ora passenger needed to travel downstream.For the latter, watchmen signaledwhenever a boat approachedto signify that someone wanted tocome aboard. Henderson, Kentucky,a few miles downstream, had amuch friendlier shoreline and welcomedsteamboats and other rivertraffic that bypassed Evansville.
