GPA CANADA
– LOOKING BACK
GPAC Year in Review
When I reflect back on our 2010 plan and its execution, I am extremely proud of our achievements.
For the past few years GPAC has worked hard to improve product, service and financial performance;
the fruits of our labour have put us back in the black in 2010.
In reviewing our performance scorecard, we see a number of successes. Our membership and corporate
sponsorship are up significantly, and attendance at our events exceeded our high expectations.
On top of our regular program, we celebrated GPAC’s 50th anniversary, held technical luncheons
(BP Noel and FG Best Practices), selected a new charity of choice, completed an expanded safety
benchmarking study, and re-instated a representative on the Safety Council Pressure Vessel and
Boiler Committee.
Our administrative service provider, Associations Plus, continues to show their value by coming in
under budget while administrating a dynamic plan. Great job.
I want to thank the GPAC Executive team, the committee chairs and each board member for their
contributions to this successful year. I would ask our Association membership to provide feedback on
our performance and events so that we can continue to improve and provide a valuable service to
the natural gas industry.
Again, thank you for your support. Together we can make a difference!
Dayle Chadbourne
AUSPICIOUS PROGRAMS
The 2010 GPAC year can be summarized simply as: Successful!
For the Technical Committee members’ involvement in 2010, we hit a few milestones:
First, restarting the Quarterly Technical Luncheons;
Second, more networking opportunities; and
Third, hosting the 50th anniversary of GPAC where we celebrated the growth of the industry and
recalled the efforts the two previous associations took on as volunteer members to get to where we
are today.
We are now building on the past successes, and some of the highlights include improved conferences
– Operations & Maintenance and the Joint GPAC/PJVA – where we’ve seen strong technical and
business related topics and presentations that relate to the natural gas processing industry.
As a Committee, we strive to continually enhance the technical component of these events, always
looking forward to feedback and suggestions to improve. Another success was the kick-off of the
Quarterly Technical Luncheons, where we featured the Apache/BP-Amoco Noel Infrastructure Project
to a full-member attendance at the Calgary Chamber of Commerce. We plan to carry these types of
quality technical luncheons into 2011 and beyond.
The Technical Committee is also engaging with academic faculty members of provincial universities
and technical institutions to bring cutting-edge and research-related topics that are relevant to
Association members.
Overall, 2010 was a successful year, and we look forward to an even more successful 2011.
GAS ALUMNI
The number of GAS alumni continues to dwindle, unfortunately, as several members passed away
in 2010.
But there was a good turnout for the October 14th anniversary event sponsored by GPAC at the
Palliser Hotel. This is where the initial CGPA/CGPSA meetings were held in 1960. So it was a pleasure
to renew acquaintances and recall how CGPA/CGPSA began, as well as to update everyone on
how GAS alumni evolved in 1989 to provide contact for retirees.
To qualify for membership, former CGPA/CGPSA members need to be at least 50 years old, be
retired or semi-retired, worked in the oil and gas industry for 20 years, and pay an annual $9.00
(+GST) fee.
GPA CANADA – LOOKING
FORWARD TO THE NEXT 50
YEARS
Please join me in celebrating the 2011 GPA Canada board of directors. I’m honoured to be working
together with such an excellent group of people who have worked so hard to continue in the best
tradition of GPA Canada’s 50-year history. Looking forward to the next 50 years, we’ve restructured
into a more streamlined board, consolidating some positions and creating valuable new ones.
Looking forward doesn’t start today, it started almost five years ago when I organized GPA
Canada’s first strategy session.
Like any merged organization, corporate or non-profit, there’s a transition period when the previous
entities (CGPA and CGPSA) merge, initially lacking a clear identity. Recognizing the need, the
initial sessions focused on defining GPA Canada. We learned where we came from, who we were,
and most importantly, who our members want us to be. Finally, we mapped out our goals and how
we were going to get there.
We clearly defined that GPA Canada is to be the “Premier Technical Association Representing Gas
Processing in Canada,” and from that clear vision we have refocused our education, programs and
entertainment portfolios. We have eliminated extraneous events that didn’t align with our vision,
and we have created new events, educational series and programs that do.
It has been a lot of work, over several years, but today a focused, clearly defined, Premier
Technical Association stands before you.
Continuing in that light, I’m happy to introduce the first new portfolio for GPA Canada in years. Rob
Nadalutti has created a role of Director Academic, which will be responsible for building and developing
relationships with educational institutions in Western Canada like the U of C, U of A, SAIT and
NAIT, as well as being responsible for the existing and new GPA Canada scholarships and bursaries.
We’re fortunate to have a very high rate of involvement from our membership, and we have a long
list of members who want to volunteer. This is an excellent way to get involved with GPA Canada, to
meet dynamic people from our industry . . . and helping to make this the GPA Canada YOU want!
We’re creating new volunteer boards to assist with the growing entertainment and programs portfolios.
If you’ve already expressed an interest in helping out, expect a call. If you would like to get
involved, please contact us at: info@GPACanada.com.
Our AGM is scheduled for Wednesday, March 2nd. As our partnership with Engineers Without
Borders grows, I’m very happy to announce that Jody Rechenmacher of EWB will be the feature
speaker for this year’s event. A presentation by EWB, a great organization doing some amazing
work around the world, is not to be missed.
Of course, all of this would not be possible without the strong support of our members and corporate
sponsors. Our top priority this year is to reconnect with past members and companies; to
introduce the NEW GPA Canada.
It has been a lot of work, over several years, but
today a focused, clearly defined, Premier Technical
Association stands before you.
I’m happy to say that with the strengthened GPA Canada, our membership and event attendance
are both already increasing and we’ve got even more in store for 2011!
I encourage you to review the great schedule of events we have in store for 2011 – from education
to entertainment – we have an exciting year ahead.
We will continue to improve GPA Canada, and we’re always happy to hear from our members. If
you have anything you would like to see from YOUR GPA Canada, please feel free to contact me; I’d
love to hear from you.
REPORT
For more than 30 years GPAC has supported the gas processing
industry in Canada by recognizing the outstanding dedication of
the operating teams to safety. To qualify for a 2010 GPAC Safety
Award, gas handling facilities and supplier companies had to
achieve zero Lost Time Incidents (LTI) in 2009.
The Safety Awards banquet, held on May 7, 2010 at Calgary's
Westin Hotel, was hosted again by CTV’s Darrel Janz. Thank you
Darrel for your continued support of GPAC’s Safety Award program.
Qualifying facilities and companies increased by 13% and
attendance at the event jumped by 20% over the previous year.
Of special note, the following gas plants achieved outstanding
safety performance without an LTI:
ConocoPhillips' Goodfare: 30 years;
ConocoPhillips' Morrin Ghost Pine: 44 years;
ConocoPhillips' Niton: 33 years;
ConocoPhillips' Vulcan: 41 years;
ConocoPhillips' West Paddle River: 33 years;
Talisman Energy's Josephine: 30 years.
As a service to GPAC member companies at no cost, your
Association introduced the GPAC Safety Survey in 2009. This
is an opportunity to benchmark your company’s safety performance
and programs with your industry peers. Please contact
Recently, Wade Stinson retired from the GPAC Board after several
years of dedicated service. In fact, he was the GPAC Safety
Director for more than six years. Wade, thank you for your
valued contributions to the gas processing industry. I am very
appreciative, and I want to thank him for his guidance, mentorship
and contributions to GPAC and the industry.
