Dear POPULAR family members,

While the COVID-19 pandemic has turned our world into an

unfamiliar place, life has to go on, so does the work. Like so many

of you who have continued to fulfil your various duties, the editorial

team has spent this entire period putting this issue of Popular News

together for you by working remotely from our homes. The COVID-19

pandemic has caused major disruptions to everyone’s daily life, but

it also provided all of us and this world with an opportunity to stop

and reflect.

Starting from this issue, Popular News will be bringing you

stories about how POPULAR and our staff go through the tough

measures imposed by the countries affected by the COVID-19

pandemic steadfastly. In this issue’s “Special Feature”, two Popular

Malaysia staff want to tell us to stay positive and to make the “new

normal” a better normal (p.4), while we also look forward to the new

and interesting developments that remote working can bring to the

publishing industry (p.9).

Staying in Malaysia, we bring you on a tour of a unique bookstore

in the Klang Valley – the POPULAR Bookstore at Mid Valley MegaMall.

Turn to p.12 for a poem that our staff from Popular Malaysia has

composed in celebration of this new store! Thereafter, head over

to this issue’s “Write On”, where a new Seashore cookbook contains

recipes for cooking at home using the air fryer (p.21).

This issue’s “Popular Personality” features a Popular Malaysia

staff who has been working in POPULAR for 23 years in a new and

unique first-person approach (p.28). Also new is a photo essay in “POP

Corner” that brings you on a trip to the country where parts of the

popular Game of Thrones series were shot in (p.32)!

Also in this issue, we are pleased to introduce the new “POPULAR

Let us continue to stay vigilant and maintain good personal

A Popular Malaysia staff shares how life has changed under Malaysia’s

Movement Control Order, and why we should think positively.

在行动管制令期间 , 马来西亚大众同仁分享如何积极应对生活变化。

Malaysia confirmed its first COVID-19

cases on 25 January 2020. Since

then, more than 5,000 cases

have been confirmed in the short span

of just three months. The pandemic has

devastated the Malaysian economy, and

has also led to uncertainty and panic

among the Malaysian public.

An Unprecedented Restriction

On 18 March 2020, the Malaysian

government implemented the first phase

of the Movement Control Order (MCO),

partially locking down all public activities

in the country. Although the MCO was

expected to last for just two weeks, the

second wave of COVID-19 infections led

to its extension from 1 to 14 April 2020.

Subsequently, the MCO was lifted as

Malaysia entered the third phase of the war

against COVID-19 from 15 to 28 April 2020.

POPULAR bookstores across the

country were ordered to close during the

MCO, which significantly impacted our

business. 100 outlets were closed with no

revenue, but the cost of the overheads

still had to be paid. To deal with the

unprecedented challenge, Popular Malaysia

activated our contingency plan to keep

our operations going. All staff of Popular

Malaysia were organised into teams and our

resources were reallocated from the office

to facilitate our staff to work remotely from

home. Additionally, as part of the business

strategy planning, Popular Malaysia has

already prepared a set of projects for

implementation upon resumption of

normal operations in order to maintain the

growth of our business.

Besides ensuring business continuity,

the other major concern for Popular

Malaysia was the safety of our staff. Hence,

staff were instructed to work from home.

Through this difficult period, all Popular

Malaysia staff believed that POPULAR would

stand alongside everyone in facing this

unprecedented challenge, demonstrating

the strong bond of trust and faith between

the staff of Popular Malaysia and their

company.

An Opportunity to Learn and Stay in

Touch

The implementation of the working from

home presented an excellent opportunity

for our staff to put the lifelong learning

attitude that the founder of POPULAR,

Mr Chou Sing Chu, was known for into

practice. Learning to adapt to the changing

situation with a positive mindset, our staff

saw the teething inconveniences of the new

working arrangement as an opportunity to

fill the knowledge gap in the digital era and

to learn new skills to make the most out of

this stay-at-home period. Popular Malaysia

also gave their best in supporting their

staff by disseminating motivational and

informative articles to everyone.

Apart from our staff, Popular Malaysia

made every effort to stay connected with

our customers through our effective

customer engagement strategy. Adopting

such valuable communications and

interesting engagement activities through

social media platforms, Popular Malaysia

stayed engaged with our customers to

support and provide encouragement

for our customers through the tough

times. Our objectives were simple: to lift

the spirits of the community, to provide

interactive activities to keep our customers

engaged and entertained, and to create selfenrichment

corners such as recipe sharing

to our customers. Popular Malaysia has

finally resumed its online business on 24

April 2020 upon approval obtained from

the Malaysian government.

Making the Best of the Situation

As a mother of three toddlers, dealing with

the MCO period was not easy for me. I can

still recall how my first few days of the MCO

were filled with anxiety and confusion. The

routines that we had gotten so used to were

thrown out of the window in an instant,

and I had to learn how to juggle working

from home with being with my children at

home all the time. It was tough trying to do

everything, from thinking about my work

as an employee to being a mother trying

to keep my children occupied and well

behaved, to being a housewife with all the

responsibility of cooking and household

chores. I certainly had many doubts in

those early days of the MCO.

However, I made the adjustments

gradually as the days went by and things

started to settle down. In fact, I even started

to appreciate all these precious moments

granted to me, as the implementation of

the MCO led to a whole new discovery of

myself. I had never been so enthusiastic

about entering the kitchen to prepare meals

for my family before, with a tremendous

sense of accomplishment seeing the

satisfied look on the faces of my family

members after a meal! It was also a blessing

for me to be able to spend more time with

my children, and to see them growing up

day by day.

I am grateful that my husband shared

all the parenting and house chores without

me having to ask, whilst juggling his own

work too. We were also fortunate to have

my in-laws give us a helping hand on the

occasions when both of us could not get

away from our work. My husband took

charge of our groceries shopping trips. Of

course, we took full precautions whenever

we left our house. Wearing face masks and

shields, departing early in the morning to

avoid the crowds, and adopting a thorough

disinfection routine upon returning home.

Meanwhile, I made use of the situation

to finally get started on my long overdue

workout routine! I had always found

excuses to delay starting working out,

like the lack of time due to my work or

the lengthy commute to and from office.

Realising that exercising can benefit me

physically and emotionally, I have started

on a routine of working out for 20 to 30

minutes in the evenings. It takes just one

click to find videos of most of the workouts,

such as Tabata, Yoga, and Zumba, on the

internet.

Making a “Better Normal”

The MCO has now entered its fourth phase,

from 29 April to 12 May 2020. The infection

curve has reportedly begun to flatten with

the aggressive steps taken by the Malaysian

government in curbing the spread of the

virus. However, a conditional MCO was

announced on 1 May 2020 by the Malaysian

Prime Minister to allow almost all economic

sectors and activities to reopen from 4

May 2020 to facilitate economic recovery.

Seen as “too fast, too soon” by many, seven

Malaysian states declined to adopt the

conditional MCO. Further, reports of the rise

of new daily infections from two-digit cases

back to three-digit cases, are worrying

many.

Nevertheless, many companies

and communities have reportedly been

preparing for the reopening of their

businesses by taking precautionary steps.

Popular Malaysia has partially resumed

business by opening more than half of

our outlets nationwide. The “new normal”

guidelines are strictly implemented,

with our staff being trained to adopt safe

practices. As with most organisations,

Popular Malaysia has also implemented the

alternate working week arrangement, with

staggered working hours in place to reduce

the risk of infection.

The MCO has definitely impacted our

daily life and the country’s economy. It has

been a drastic change in many aspects.

Previously people were less attentive to

maintaining their personal hygiene, but

washing their hands has now become an

automatic habit. The world has gone virtual,

an essential response to this pandemic.

A new normal will emerge post

COVID-19, and we must come to terms that

we may not be able to return to our usual

ways as long as the virus is still spreading.

As our lifestyles transition to this new

normal, the days ahead will look different.

But, instead of looking at it as a difficult

period, we should change our perspective,

to make the new normal a “better normal”.

来西亚于 2020 年 1 月 25 日确诊首

马例新型冠状病毒疾病 , 并在短

短三个月内有逾 5000 起确诊病例。这

场大流行病重挫马来西亚的经济 , 一

度造成人民恐慌不安。

前所未有的管控措施

3 月 18 日 , 马来西亚政府开始实施第一

阶段的行动管制令 (“ 行管令 ”),

封城锁国 , 几乎全面限制人们出行。

行管令原本预计实行两周 , 但由于疫

情的第二波扩散 , 导致政府延长管控

措施 : 第二阶段的行管令时期为 4 月 1

日至 14 日。随后 , 行管令再因疫情管

控所需收紧 , 并于 4 月 15 日至 28 日进入

第三阶段。

在行管令期间 , 全马的大众书局门

市必须暂停营业 ; 百余家门市在没有

收入的情况下应付营运成本 , 影响甚

大。马来西亚大众 (“ 马大众 ”) 立

即启动应急措施 , 维持营运作业 , 全

力应对这场前所未有的挑战。此外 ,

作为业务策略规划的一部分 , 马大众

已准备了一套方案 , 以便在门市恢复

营业时 , 业务发展得以持续。

此外 , 全体同仁的健康与安全是马

大众的首要考量 , 因此要求同仁居家

办公。在这段艰难时期 , 马大众上下

齐心 , 坚信大众集团将与所有人一起

面对这场史无前例的挑战 , 展现员工

与公司之间互信相守的信念。

自我提升与保持联系

居家办公为我们提供一个良机 , 将大

众集团创办人周星衢先生秉持的终身

学习精神 , 付诸于行。除了学习积

极地适应瞬息万变的情况 , 我们也将

工作上的种种不便视为自我提升的契

机 , 包括在居家办公期间 , 加强数码

科技的掌握 , 充分学习新技能。马大

众也群发励志与资讯文章给全体人

员 , 全力给予精神上的扶持。

此外 , 马大众亦透过顾客互动策

略 , 竭尽所能地与顾客保持联系。我

们在社交媒体平台上持续活跃 , 积极

与顾客交流 , 予以鼓励 , 共渡难关。

我们的目标很简单 , 即提振顾客群的

士气 , 通过互动让他们参与其中 , 并

开创自我提升栏目如食谱分享等。与

此同时 , 马大众获得了政府的批准 ,

于 4 月 24 日重启线上业务。

竭尽所能 , 逆流而上

我育有三名幼童 , 行管令对一名职业妈

妈而言着实不易。至今我仍记得居家办

公的首几日 , 充斥了困惑与焦虑。以往

的生活习惯 , 必须马上调整 , 而我不得

不学会在家兼顾孩子与工作。但是 ,

要一手包办公事和家事 , 包括打理家

务、下厨、确保孩子听话等 , 非常困

难 , 让我不禁怀疑自己的能力。

不过 , 我逐渐调整自己 , 新的生

活步伐也随之稳定下来 , 并感谢行管

令所带来的改变 , 让我发现全新的自

我。例如 , 我从未如此热情地踏入

厨房为家人准备餐点 , 看到家人吃饱

后的满足表情 , 让我极有成就感 ! 另

外 , 我能有更多时间陪伴孩子 , 看着

他们一天天长大 , 这也是我在这段时

期的收获。

另一方面 , 我很感激丈夫在兼顾自

己的工作之余 , 自动分担家务和共同

照顾孩子。我也很庆幸孩子们的爷爷

奶奶会在我们分身乏术时 , 帮我们一

把。一般上 , 我的丈夫负责外出采购

日常用品。每当我们外出时 , 都会戴

上口罩及防护面罩 , 尽可能提早出门

以避开人潮 , 回家后马上彻底消毒 ,

做足防疫措施。

此外 , 居家办公期间 , 我终于重启

搁置已久的健身计划 ! 以前的种种借

口 , 例如工作太多、通勤时间太长等

都消失了。待我了解到运动不仅对身

体有益 , 对改善情绪也有帮助时 , 我

开始每天傍晚锻炼 20 至 30 分钟。只需要

上网搜索 , 就能找到各式锻炼视频 ,

像是间歇训练 “Tabata”、瑜伽、尊巴

舞等 , 应有尽有。

积极面对新常态

行管令于 4 月 29 日至 5 月 12 日步入第四

阶段。此时马来西亚政府的遏制病毒

传播措施奏效 , 疫情趋缓。马来西亚

首相随即于 5 月 1 日宣布 ,5 月 4 日起有条

件地放宽行管令 , 允许开放大多数的

商业活动 , 促进经济。然而 , 多数民

众认为解封得 “ 太快 ”, 甚至有七个

州属拒绝配合放宽行管令。当时每天

的新增确诊病例从两位数上升至三位

数 , 疫况堪虞。

尽管如此 , 许多公司和社区已为

重新开业 , 积极准备防疫措施 , 包括

马大众也恢复了全马近半数的门市业

务。相关门市严格执行 “ 新常态 ” 指

导原则 , 训练员工采取安全措施。与

多数机构一样 , 马大众也为员工安排

病的绝佳方案。

后冠病时期 , 新常态必然出现。我

们必须意识到 , 只要病毒仍在传播 ,

我们将无法恢复以往惯常的生活方

式。随着生活过渡到新常态 , 未来也

将有所改变。不过 , 与其把新常态视

为辛苦的 “ 辛 ” 常态 , 不如转念将之

视为欣然面对的 “ 欣 ” 常态 , 奋力前

行 , 开启新生活 !

Working from home changes how we work, but a Popular Malaysia staff

believes that the best is yet to be.

居家办公改变了人们的工作方式 , 但马来西亚大众同仁深信 : 美好在未来。

Here in Malaysia and all across the

globe, 2020 has been a very unusual

and unsettling year for many of us

due to the COVID-19 outbreak. Due to our

local Movement Control Order (MCO), we

found ourselves doing something most of

us are not used to — remote working. Work

has now entered our homes and we have

to get used to the idea of getting our jobs

done while staying home.

For someone who enjoys my existing

work-life balance, the thought of working

from home was slightly troubling at the

beginning, but now, I am thankful for

the opportunity to be able to do my job

remotely. Not everyone in Malaysia is as

privileged, so I resolved to make the most

of it.

The Benefits and Challenges of Working

from Home

The benefits of working from home are

plenty, but most fascinating of all is being

able to adjust my working environment to

match my mood and needs. I could work

from the comfort of my bed one day, and at

the dining table in the kitchen the next. This

freedom allowed me to stay more relaxed,

boost my morale and work efficiently. Let

us face it: we are not robots. We are living,

breathing beings, who need changes in our

environment to help us to get work done

and, sometimes, an office just does not do

the trick. Undeniably, this work-from-home

situation really helped me to work in more

favourable spaces.

As much as working from home can

be beneficial and highly productive, it can

also take a turn and go awfully wrong for

many of us. Especially if we do not have a

designated work space, a decent schedule,

and guidance from our seniors. It is all too

easy to get distracted and get very little

done. On the flip side, we may also find that

some can never find an “off” button, causing

them to work too long and too hard. That is

why “balance” is key.

Staying Focused at Home

To stay focused and effective throughout

the days I worked from home, I have had

to make some arrangements for myself and

get into the right habits. I accomplished

these through the following methods.

Firstly, creating a workspace that works for

me. In my case, I have a huge table and a

comfortable chair in my bedroom that is

air-conditioned to keep me cool, and when

I am working, I will close the door to shut

out any potential distraction.

Next, I set myself practical goals

that push me to my limit. Effective time

management is crucial in order to meet

my deadlines, and I find that maintaining a

daily to-do list is beneficial in this regard to

avoid procrastination. Keeping a timesheet

also helps me keep myself accountable for

the work I do daily.

I will give myself small rewards as a

form of motivation. As someone with a

rather short attention span, I have to find

a way to make my work as enjoyable as

possible. Giving myself rewards does the

trick! For example, I would “treat” myself

to a short break every time I completed a

task successfully, and this treat could be

anything – from getting snacks, to fixing a

drink, to watching a short video, or even a

breath of fresh air in the garden.

Lastly, I control access to my social

media when working. Honestly, this was

quite a task for me but I managed to get

into the groove of it by planning out which

notifications to keep on and which to

mute, to avoid falling into the rabbit hole

of mindlessly scrolling on social media or

texting friends. Instead, I used my lunch

break, or even the aforementioned “treats”,

to do the occasional Instagram scroll or to

reply to non-work-related messages.

The Future of Remote Working

All in all, working from home has been an

experience that I never expected due to

the nature of the publishing industry. The

COVID-19 outbreak has forced many of

us to rethink what work-life balance really

means in different settings. I cannot tell

whether this change in how we work will

persist after the world has recovered and

moved on from this pandemic.

As of now, what I know is that that

working from home is a plan for business

survival. Moving forward in this fast-paced,

technological world, I am excited to see the

new and interesting developments that

remote working can bring to the publishing

industry.

论在马来西亚还是全球各地 ,

无冠状病毒的爆发让 2020 年成了非

比寻常与惴惴不安的一年。由于马来西

亚政府实施行动管制令 , 我们必须尝试

“ 远程办公 ” 这种之前较为鲜用的工作

方式。如今公事与家事同在屋檐下 , 不

得不将居家办公视为生活新常态。

对于享受工作与生活平衡的我而

言 , 居家办公初期确实有些困扰。不过

现在 , 我非常感恩能远程办公 , 因为不

是每个马来西亚人都有这样的工作机

会 , 所以我定要全力以赴。

居家办公利弊共存

居家办公的好处不少 , 其中最吸引人的

是可以随心所欲地调整工作环境 , 例如

有时我在舒适的床上办公 , 隔天则在厨

房的餐桌处理文件。这种自由感让我放

松 , 进而提升工作效率与士气。我们是

生命体 , 不是机器人 , 适时改变工作环

境将有助于完成工作 , 这是一般办公室

的短板。无可否认 , 居家办公确实让我

在更有利的空间内高效工作。

尽管如此 , 有些人对居家办公还

是会感到相当不便 , 尤其当没有特定座

位、正规日程表、前辈指导时 , 容易分

心 , 影响效率。反之 , 有些职场人拿捏

不好 “ 下班时间 ”, 不懂得适可而止 ,

无形中造成工作时段延长 , 最后甚至比

在办公室工作更感劳累。因此 , 凡事须

以 “ 平衡 ” 为重。

确保专注与效率

为了确保自身的专注与效率 , 我花了一

些心思安排 , 并培养良好习惯。首先 ,

我在有空调的睡房内辟出一个工作空

间 , 安放大桌子与舒适的椅子 , 保持凉

爽 , 闭门防扰。

其次 , 设定目标 , 发挥极致。时间

管理是如期完成任务的关键 , 我会列出

每日任务清单 , 避免拖延公事 , 并制定

时间表来提醒自己必须尽责。

我也会适时给自己一些小奖励 ,

推自己一把 , 让工作氛围更愉悦 , 提高

我的专注力。例如 , 每完成一项任务 ,

我会 “ 奖励 ” 自己休息片刻 , 吃点零

The Yin and Yang of a Design

Let us take a brief walk down memory lane

and share the story of how Popular Malaysia’s

Business Development team came up with the

unique concept for POPULAR Bookstore at Mid

Valley MegaMall (WMV). Our plans were put into

action in a short period of time. Having less than

three months to work out an irregularly shaped

store of 15,000 square feet was indeed a huge

challenge. Our team braved storm after storm.

With strength and perseverance, we conquered

all obstacles. On 2 December 2018, WMV opened

amid much anticipation and excitement.

Our main priorities were to bring out this

store’s presence from afar and to fully utilise

its semi-circular shape. After endless rounds of

discussion with the contractors and designers,

we came up with the Yin Yang concept –

based on the complex Chinese philosophy of

achieving a balance in the cosmic dualism that

exists in every aspect of our lives. By integrating

this concept, the store’s contrasting colours

inspire and showcase its uniqueness. The unique

irregular shop front has been transformed into a

bold and daring statement, one that will surely

attract patrons from afar.

Given our cordial professional relationship

with the owner of the mall, they supported us by

allowing us to make full use of some major parts

left behind by the previous tenant. A collective

show of strength in reducing construction waste

and maximising our collecting recycling efforts,

the design of WMV can hold its own against

other well-designed contemporary bookstores.

A Concept Bookstore to Read and Learn

Popular Malaysia’s Business Development

team aims to deliver more unique and modern

concept stores in the near future, in line with

developments in retail and market demand. As

the world continues to change, reading and

让我们回顾马来西亚大众商务拓展部设计

谷中城美佳广场 WMV 门市的妙想之旅。当

时我们计划在最短的时间内完成任务 , 要

在三个月内设立一家 1 万 5000 英尺大的门

市 , 店面又非方正形 , 确是一大挑战。团

队历经风雨 , 勇克种种挑战 ,2018 年 12 月

2 日 , 大众 WMV 门市终于在众人的殷勤期待

下开业了。

构思设计时 , 我们侧重于如何让店面

引人注目 , 以及善用这个半圆形空间。

我们与装修商、设计师经过无数次的讨

论后 , 想出了 “ 阴 ”“ 阳 ” 设计理念 ——

“ 阴 ” 和 “ 阳 ” 在中国哲学里是一种宇宙

二元论 , 这两种元素让我们生活的方方面

面达臻平衡。因此 , 我们在店内采用对比

色 , 展示这个独到的设计理念。别开生面

的不规则门面 , 也蜕变成一句引人入胜的

诗 , 施展吸睛之魅。

我们与商场业主保持友好专业的关

系 , 承蒙他们允准我们善用前租户留下的

资源 , 更由此减少一笔装修耗费 , 贯彻大

众素来推崇的环保再循环方针。大众 WMV

门市的设计 , 足以媲美其他精美的现代化

书店。

Riding on the exceptional success of

our anchor series Complete Canadian

Curriculum (CCC), Popular Canada has

launched Programme canadien complet, a

French version of CCC! As an integral part

of Canada’s educational landscape, we aim

to support immersive French education

for the upcoming generation of bilingual

Canadians through this series. Programme

canadien complet is Popular Canada’s

resolute vow to meet the market demand

for a curriculum-based, all-inclusive

workbook series for Canada’s French

immersion programmes.

Canada is a bilingual country, and

it aims to maintain a high standard of

public education in both English and

French, its two official languages. The

French immersion programme is a form of

bilingual education designed for students

who do not speak French at home.

Students in English-language schools who

learn French as their second language are

taught various subjects in French from

Senior Kindergarten or Grade 1 to Grade

3, with English instructions introduced at

Grade 4, to immerse the young learners in a

French language environment and ensure

effective and efficient language acquisition

and retention.

A Tailored French Workbook Series

The demand for French immersion

education has been growing across Canada,

with Ontario showing the most significant

growth in the number of students enrolled

in French immersion programmes. As these

students are not from French-speaking

families, their parents or guardians often

feel helpless as they are not sure if their

children have completed tasks correctly

or if they can do well in school. Thus, they

often rely on supplementary workbooks

in French to help their children succeed

in the French immersion programme.

However, through market research,

feedback from experienced teachers in

the programme, and our interactions with

parents and students at book fairs, we

have learnt that the book market lacks

such workbooks, particularly ones that

cover all the core subjects taught in school

and are specially designed for French

immersion programmes. Hence, the idea of

developing a comprehensive, curriculumbased

workbook series for French

immersion education, adapted from our

already established CCC with its exceptional

features to create the Programme canadien

complet series, was born.

Like CCC, Programme canadien complet,

written entirely in French, is a handy allin-one

workbook series covering the key

subject areas of Mathematics, French

Language, Social Studies, and Science.

The curriculum-based units include clear

definitions, relatable examples, useful

tips, and abundant practice for children

to develop an in-depth understanding

of the essential concepts and necessary

skills for each grade level. The activities are

carefully designed with Canadian themes

and student engagement in mind. The

two-to-four-page units encourage students

to work at their own pace, building a

solid foundation in French as their second

language with confidence. The vibrant

and colourful illustrations provide clear

visual cues to further enhance students’

understanding of essential concepts and

sustain their interest in learning.

Programme canadien complet,

reviewed and approved by educators in

French, retains our signature style in CCC,

which has been embraced by students

and educators alike. This successful

transformation of our anchor series is sure

to be a bestseller in the French immersion

market.

Rat Fiesta

鼠年迎春嘉年华

Popular Malaysia welcomed the 2020

Chinese New Year with a day filled with

festive fun.

马来西亚大众以一场欢乐洋溢的嘉年华 ,

喜迎 2020 农历新年。

The Chinese New Year (CNY), also

known as Spring Festival, is the

biggest festival for the Chinese.

Marking a new year on the lunar calendar,

CNY represents new beginnings. It is

celebrated in different ways by millions of

Chinese across the globe in China, Taiwan,

Malaysia, Vietnam, Korea, Japan, Thailand,

Indonesia and many more!

A Festival of Creativity and Well Wishes

This year, Popular Malaysia organised a series

of fascinating activities and programmes

for all of our staff! The festivities started with

the bountiful and exquisite decorations

in the office. Believe it or not, most of the

decorations were 100% hand-made by our

creative colleagues! How talented! As 2020

is the Year of the Rat, many customised

decorations with this theme could be seen.

Starting from entrance through the lobby,

and all the way until the office, eye-catching

decorations adorned the pathways, vying

for our colleagues’ attention as they made

their way to work. Indeed, the decorations

truly lightened up the atmosphere of the

festival!

Trends come and go, but tradition

never grows old. A “Greeting Cards Corner”

was created for the staff to send CNY

wishes to their family, friends, or colleagues

abroad! They could grab the greeting cards

from the corner and deposit it into the

mail box prepared by the organiser, which

were collected, sorted accordingly and

posted off on a weekly basis. A "Wishing

Tree" stood next to the greeting cards

corner, “decorated” with notes with well

wishes hanging all on the tree. Staff were

encouraged to paste their very own note

from the box of sticky notes by the side. In

Chinese culture, the Chinese will typically

pray for good fortune, prosperity or success

in the year to come. Hence, the “Wishing

Tree” spiced up the ambiance of the festival.


A Fair of Fun and Competition

A fun and exciting “Chinese New Year Fun

Fair” was organised, bringing the festive

atmosphere to a crescendo. It was a fullday

event held on 3 February 2020 from

11.30am till 4pm. There were a total of five

traditional games from different places

that celebrate CNY. The five game counters

were designed according to the symbolic

CNY items from the respective countries: “In

Between” for Malaysia; “gourd-crab-shrimpfish”

for Vietnam; “Daruma Otoshi” for Japan;

“Tuho” for Korea, and “Stacking Mandarin

Oranges” for Taiwan. A coupon was given

to every staff for stamp collection, as they

went about redeeming gifts from the

redemption counter based on the total

number of stamps collected. Meanwhile,

there was also a snack corner for staff to

mingle around and enjoy some titbits after

games.

Besides the games, a series of

competitions was also held concurrently.

These included both competitions for the

groups of contestants, such as “Creative 3D

Design with Ang Pow”, and competitions

for the individuals, like “Calligraphy” and

“Speed Eating”. Buzzing with excitement

and energy, these competitions showcased

the racial harmony and unity in Malaysia

with the keen participation of Malay and

Indian members of the POPULAR family!

The contestants of the “Creative

3D Design with Ang Pow” competition

participated in groups of five. Each group

had to put their creative juices to work,

designing and building their masterpiece

with red packets. The winning group walked

away with a cash prize of RM250, and two

runners-up bagged RM100 as consolation

prizes respectively.

The second competition was

“Calligraphy”, where contestants were

required to copy the displayed Chinese

characters using writing brushes prepared

by the organiser. Putting their artistic talent

on display, the field of eager contestants

even included several of our Malay

colleagues. The winners were rewarded for

their efforts with a cash prize of RM250 for

the first place, RM100 for the second place,

and RM50 for the third place.

A Fiesta of Bliss and Laughter

The third and most exciting competition

was the “Speed Eating” contest! The

contestants in this competition had to

finish up all the food prepared for them,

such as one mandarin orange, two slices of

watermelon, three chocolate sticks, three

peanuts and a cup of Coke drank through

a straw, within the allocated time limit.

As soon as the cued by the emcees, the

contestants began gobbling up all the food

on the table and completed the challenge

much earlier than everyone expected! With

the excited audience cheering them on, the

three fastest contestants walked away with

cash prizes of RM50 each.

The event was indeed a success,

wrapping up with the blissful and pleasant

laughter of all. All the masterpieces from

the competitions would be displayed at

notice board corner.

历新年又称春节 , 是华人最盛大

农的传统节日 , 标志着新一年的

起始 , 万象更新 , 世界各地包括中国大

陆、台湾、马来西亚、越南、韩国、日

本、泰国、印度尼西亚等 , 成千上万的

华人皆以与众不同的方式热烈庆祝 !

创意祝福活动

今年 , 马来西亚大众为全体同仁举办一

系列精彩的迎春节目。首先 , 办公室披

上多姿多彩的新春装饰 , 多由同仁亲

制 , 创意满分、才华横溢 ! 由于 2020

年是金鼠年 , 这个生肖主题装饰处处可

见 , 从公司大厅的入口到办公室 , 整条

走道都缀满亮眼的新年装饰 , 吸引同事

目光 , 为佳节增添不少欢乐气氛 !

潮流更迭 , 传统不变 , 同仁们可以

在特设的 “ 贺卡角落 ” 任选贺卡 , 写上

祝语 , 投入现场备置的 “ 邮箱 ”, 向亲

友或国外同事传递祝福 , 负责人每周整

理好贺卡后代为邮寄。“ 贺卡角落 ” 旁

的 “ 许愿树 ” 也挂满祝语纸条 , 同事们

可利用所提供的便利贴 , 将祝语挂在树

上。在华人习俗中 , 人们会许愿祈求新

的一年财源广进、大吉大利、心想事

成 , 这棵 “ 许愿树 ” 即为佳节捎来了

希望。


趣味游戏竞赛

另一项精彩的大型活动 “ 新春欢乐嘉年

华 ”, 将整个节日气氛推向高潮。这

项一整天的活动在 2020 年 2 月 3 日上午

11 时 30 分至下午 4 时举行 , 一共准备了

五个游戏摊位 , 设计概念来自各地的传

统应节游戏 : 马来西亚的 “ 射龙门 ”;

越南的 “ 葫芦 — 蟹 — 虾 — 鱼 ”; 日本

的 “ 不倒翁 ”; 韩国的 “ 投壶 ”, 以及

台湾的 “ 叠橘子 ”。每名员工都获得一

张收集贴纸的固本 , 可根据贴纸数量兑

礼。此外 , 现场也设置餐饮区 , 供同事

们在游戏结束之后享用小吃与交流。

现场也同时进行一系列竞赛 , 团体

赛为 “ 创意红包立体设计 ”, 个人赛则

包括书法比赛和速食大挑战。竞赛气氛

热闹 , 大众家族的马来和印度同事们皆

积极参与 , 凸显了马来西亚各族群之间

和谐团结的一面 !

“ 创意红包立体设计 ” 竞赛以五人

为一组进行 , 每组须发挥创意 , 利用红

包封套制作出设计精美的成品 , 冠军组

可赢得奖金 250 令吉 , 两组亚军各可赢

得 100 令吉。

书法比赛方面 , 参赛者须利用主办

单位提供的毛笔 , 临摹指定的一组汉

字。参赛者将艺术才华发挥得淋漓尽

致 , 其中不乏马来同事。冠、亚、季军

分别赢得 250 令吉、100 令吉及 50 令吉的

奖金。

笑声满盈嘉年华

最精彩刺激的是第三项竞赛 —— 速食大

挑战 ! 参赛者须在限定时间内吃完预备

的食物 , 包括一个橘子、两片西瓜、

三支巧克力棒、三颗花生 , 以及用吸管

喝完一杯可乐。主持人一声令下 , 参赛

者开始狼吞虎咽 , 出乎意料 , 参赛者在

极短时间内就把食物扫个精光 ! 在观众

的喝彩助威下 , 首三名胜利者顺利诞生

了 , 各赢得奖金 50 令吉。

当天活动在众人的一片祝福与欢笑

声中圆满落幕。大家在竞赛中精心制作

的成品也展示于办公室布告栏一隅 , 延

续佳节喜气 !

lets those staying at home enjoy delicious

烹饪导师 Daphne Ma 推出新食谱 , 让宅家

男女尽情享用超人气的气炸锅料理。

The COVID-19 pandemic has drastically

changed the lives of everyone, with

the public advised against going out,

staying home to work or study instead.

Despite the resulting difficult business

climate, online commerce seems to

be succeeding against the tide. Many

housewives have started going online to

order their meals and to do their grocery

shopping. What was even livelier was

interaction surrounding the topic of

cooking on social networking sites. Various

recipes are being shared online, including

ones for Dalgona Coffee, 1000 Soufflé

Omelette and Basque Burnt Cheesecake.

Have you tried making them yourself? The

most amazing of which was when a friend

of mine who has never cooked before,

shared her recipes for making fried spring

rolls, mochi balls, Portuguese tarts and

French toast online. It turned out that she

had just bought an air fryer!

A Simple Way to Fry Food

Books that feature cooking with an air fryer

have been dominating the list of bestsellers

in recent days. This new kitchen appliance

has appealed to both culinary novices

and veterans because it has expanded the

possibility of cooking dishes at home that

were previously unlikely. In the past, to fry

any food, you would need to prepare a

pot of hot oil, while also having to to deal

with the smoky and greasy kitchen in the

aftermath. These days, a small air fryer can

cook without the hassle. Easy to operate, all

you need to do is to select the temperature

and timing and sit back to wait for your next

meal!

Though the air dryer is convenient

to use, a new owner will still need to refer

to the various cooking forums and recipes

online to cook a variety of delicious dishes.

Since 2017, cooking instructor Daphne Ma

has been sharing her cooking experience

and recipes on her “Daphne.kitchen”

Facebook page. In 2019, Daphne launched

Healthy and Delicious Air Fryer Recipes to

teach readers how to make full use of the

functions of an air fryer to cook over 40

dishes with ease.

米煮饭的朋友 , 某天突然在网上分享她

亲手做的炸春卷、麻糬球、葡挞、法国

吐司 …… 原来是添置了一台气炸锅 !

轻松炸出好味道

近日 , 以 “ 气炸锅 ” 为主题的新书占据

食谱畅销榜 , 无论是入厨新手还是烹饪

老手都玩得不亦乐乎。原因无他 , 只

因这款新式电器扩大了在家自煮的可能

性。以前如果要油炸食物 , 须先准备一

锅滚烫的热油 , 之后炸得满室油烟 , 油

头垢面 ; 现在只需一部小小的机器就能

做到 , 而且无烟、少油。气炸锅的操作

简易 , 只要调校温度 , 扭动时间掣 , 接

Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM)

is a vast and profound subject that

includes knowledge of the body’s

meridians like the gallbladder, liver and

pericardium, acupoints like fengchi, baihui

and yongquan, and herbs like codonopsis,

pueraria and cuscuta. Many struggle to

master this subject, but not Mustika. The

Malay TCM physician is now studying for

her master’s degree in dermatology at

Shanghai University of Traditional Chinese

Medicine (SUTCM).

Despite excelling academically in the

Science stream, Mustika revealed that she

had to work hard to catch up in university.

She was very interested in TCM then, but

she did not know much of its basic theory.

“When my lecturer explained the theories

of the yin-yang and five elements and their

relationship in the first lesson, I had to learn

by thinking out of the box,” Mustika said.

According to Huangdi Neijing, a

medical classic attributed to the Yellow

Emperor, the body’s meridian system is

composed of meridians, collaterals, skin,

and the organs. There are 365 acupoints in

the human body alone, and every single one

must be memorised. The complementary

and countering relationship between

various Chinese herbal medicines must be

memorised too. Hence, not only must one’s

foundation in the Chinese language be rock

solid when studying TCM, understanding

what has been taught is equally vital.

Mustika believes that a systematic

learning approach is key. “I learnt TCM

step by step, first by understanding its

philosophies and theories, and then

medicines and treatments,” she said. “A

strong foundation is most important

for treatments like acupuncture, where

experience on knowing what treatments

prescribe can only be accumulated slowly.”

Through her resoluteness, Mustika

slowly established a foothold in learning

TCM. “But it is challenging having to

learn both Western medicine and

TCM at the same time,” she revealed.

To master TCM, Mustika also needed

to have an understanding of Western

medicine. Mustika said her Science stream

background helped.

TCM For All

Mustika’s affinity for TCM began when she

was working in a pharmacy during her

secondary school. A customer enquired

about some Chinese medicine and her

interest was piqued. She had never been

exposed to TCM hitherto, and she began

buying books about TCM to read and felt as if

she had stumbled upon a treasure trove. Her

research has set the direction of her future.

Mustika is motivated by more than

purely her interest in TCM, and is convinced

that she can play a role in promoting it. “I

can promote TCM to more people, not just

to the Chinese but to Malays and others as

well,” Mustika said. “I thought long and hard

when choosing a subject and decided that

TCM was most suitable.”

Mustika said that there is no absolute

answer in TCM when treating a patient,

as many treatments are available. For

example, if a patient is coughing, some TCM

physicians believe treatment should start

from the lungs and prescribe medication

for clearing heatiness and detoxification.

Another physician may approach it from

the principle of the five elements, starting

with treating the spleen and stomach to

strengthen the lungs. Mustika is fascinated

by these varied approaches. “It is magical,”

she said. “If a patient is suffering from itchy

skin, I will prescribe medicine related to the

meridians to treat it, and it will probably

heal completely.”

Hoping to pass on her knowledge in

TCM to others, Mustika wants to teach them

how to stay in good health. “Malays believe

that different food has different properties,”

she said. “They get it when I told them this

food is heaty or that food is cooling.” Therefore,

when Mustika is doing consultations, she will

explain TCM to her Malay patients through

their perspective instead. “It actually makes

sense,” she declared.

Applying Her TCM Knowledge

After graduating from university in 2019,

Mustika did a one-year internship at a

hospital in Shanghai, and she opted to

pursue a master’s degree after that. For

those who think Mustika’s achievements

came easily to her, nothing could be further

from the truth. Mustika and her brother

were raised by her mother and her maternal

grandfather after their father passed away.

She almost stopped learning Chinese

in secondary school as the schedule of

her Chinese and religious studies classes

clashed, and the tuition fees of studying in

an independent school were too expensive.

Fortunately, her alma mater – Pay Fong

Middle School in Melaka – awarded her a

bursary to complete her studies. Mustika

then went on to win a scholarship from

SUTCM to further her studies overseas.

Many around Mustika did not support

her decision to study TCM, including her

mother who was concerned about her

employment prospects. She smilingly

said that she knew she was choosing a

path less travelled but reasoned that the

competition to study Western medicine

was more intense, whilst studying TCM was

special and unique. “Many were worried

that I will not be able to earn a living, but I

don’t buy that,” Mustika said.

In fact, Mustika was offered job

opportunities even before she had

completed her undergraduate studies.

Though some people believe that being

a TCM physician means practicing in a

small clinic, Mustika does not set any limits

on herself. She believes that TCM can be

partnered with various fields, like publicity,

consultancy, and training.

In August 2019, Mustika was invited

to speak at the global knowledge sharing

platform TEDx to share her journey of

learning Chinese and TCM. Her clear

enunciation, fluent speaking and confident

stage presence made a huge impression on

the audience. She revealed that since then,

she has been approached by companies

dealing with sports, beauty products, and

even artificial intelligence. This has further

convinced her that nothing is impossible.

Acing Her Chinese Language Class

Mustika’s maternal grandfather played a

major role in her accomplishments. A retired

school principal, her grandfather had always

admired the diligence of the Chinese.

Hence, not only did he send his daughter

to a Chinese school, he also insisted that his

two grandchildren studied Chinese.

It was tough in the beginning as

Mustika struggled to learn Chinese.

Her grandfather insisted that she had

to communicate with her teacher and

classmates in Chinese and this helped

her gradually master the language. She

smilingly recalled that enunciation was

not the toughest part of learning Chinese.

Instead, it was understanding the meaning

and usage of the idioms, heteronyms and

homonyms. Grammar and writing posed

the most problems for her, as she would

frequently use wrong words or construct

sentences with the wrong structure.

It was just a few months before the

national examinations when her teacher

pointed out her mistakes in front of her

classmates. Mustika was determined to take

action. She revised her Chinese every day,

paying special attention to the usage of

words and sentence structure and noting

down examples of good sentences and

idioms.

“I was competitive and hoped to score

A’s for all my seven subjects,” Mustika said.

“I did not want Chinese to be the cause of

an imperfect report card.” Her hard work

paid off. Mustika not only scored seven As,

she also scored 92 points in her Chinese

composition, the highest score alongside

another Chinese classmate.

Although her grandfather did not

learn Chinese, he encouraged Mustika not

just to learn the Chinese language in school,

but to learn about Chinese culture as well.

Her exposure to The Analects of Confucius

since young has had a profound impact on

her, as she incorporates the teachings of

Confucianism in her daily life.

“My grandfather encouraged me to

study The Analects of Confucius diligently as

his teachings do not clash with our religion,”

Mustika said. Her grandfather would often

asked about her learning progress and

discussed the content with her. Studying

The Analects of Confucius laid the foundation

for Mustika and made studying Huangdi

Neijing during her undergraduate days an

easier undertaking.

“Study hard and never stop learning”

aptly describes Mustika’s approach in life.

Besides being proficient in Malay, Chinese

and English, she also speaks Shanghainese

and French. She hopes to learn German and

Spanish next. Mustika said that while she

was doing her internship in Shanghai, 80%

of her patients were elderly people who

could only speak Shanghainese. Having

learnt Shanghainese for just a month when

she was in school, she had to figure the rest

out by herself in order to communicate

with her patients. Meanwhile, she learnt

French from a friend from France.

Embracing Different Cultures

Growing up in an environment that was

different from others has opened her mind

to embrace different cultures. Mustika

revealed that many of her Malaysian friends

told her that they were reluctant to befriend

foreigners and that they were reluctant to

learn about cultures of other races.

“I did not understand Chinese when I

was young, but I did not feel uncomfortable

when others were conversing in their

languages and did not think they were

talking bad about me.” In fact, Mustika

travelled to Harbin with a group of Thai

friends. “Though I do not understand Thai, it

did not feel awkward,” she said. “When they

were talking about something interesting in

Thai, they would translate it to share with me,

so there is really no need to be too guarded.”

It is this gracious and inclusive attitude

that her elders have instilled in her. Mustika

always keeps an open mind. It is this

positivity that has made her so determined

and driven. Just like her motto that was

inspired from the writings in Huangdi

Neijing, “negativity has no way of invading

the body if there is positive energy within”.

丝子 ⋯⋯ 中医药学问精深宏阔 , 有些学

生花了数年工夫 , 仍未能窥其殿堂。然

而 , 这却丝毫难不倒马来姑娘慕斯蒂

卡 , 自小接受华文教育的她 , 如今是上

海中医药大学硕士研究生 , 攻读皮肤专

科。

谈起刚上大学的那段日子 , 向来

学习成绩优秀的她不讳言 , 虽然自己是

理科班出身 , 但确实曾下过一番苦功追

赶进度 , 毕竟中医和西医采用的是截然

不同的理论和哲学基础。她说 , 当时对

中医兴趣浓厚 , 但对其基础理论一知半

解 ,“ 第一堂课老师就讲解阴阳五行的

理论 , 以及它们之间的关系 , 我需要跳

出既有的思考框架 , 完全用新的认知来

理解 , 而不是用理科的知识去判断。”

据《黄帝内经》记述 , 人体经络

系统由经脉、络脉、经筋、皮部、脏腑

等部分组成 , 各有所处 , 各有所主 , 单

是穴位就有 365 个 , 要熟记和活用并非

易事 , 更别提还要弄清各种中药材相生

相克的关系。学习中医 , 除了语文功底

要好 , 理解力也要强。慕斯蒂卡从零

起步 , 如海绵般吸收点滴知识、融会贯

通 , 这股毅力让人钦佩。

慕斯蒂卡认为 , 系统化的学习过程

为她打下了牢固的基础 :“ 学习中医是

循序渐进的 , 先搞好基础 , 弄明白当中

的哲学理论 , 然后才学习药物和治疗方

法。最重要的是基础 , 包括针灸等等 ,

这可以慢慢积累经验 , 要知道有哪些治

疗方法 , 再看情况使用哪一种药物。”

凭着不懈努力 , 慕斯蒂卡慢慢在学

医这条路上站稳了脚步。“ 我觉得还应

付得来 , 比较难的是要同时学习西医和

中医 , 这很有挑战性。除了要知道中医

知识 , 对西医也要有一定的认识 , 两者

都掌握得好是个挑战 , 而我以前在中学

学习理科的经验对此有帮助。”

让各族受益于中医

慕斯蒂卡与中医的渊源 , 始于中学时

期在西药店打工的经历 : 当时有顾客上

门问起中药 , 引起她对中医的兴趣。此

前她从未接触中医 , 也不曾向中医师求

诊。没想到 , 这间接为慕斯蒂卡打开通

往学习中医的道路 , 她开始查询中医学

的资料、买书看 , 觉得自己闯进了一座

宝库 , 埋头研究起来 , 更因此奠定了未

来的志向。

“ 除了兴趣之外 , 我深信本身的

能力可以驾驭中医知识。加上我懂得华

文 , 以后可以推广中医 , 让更多人知

道 , 不只华人 , 还包括马来人等。选科

的时候我考虑了很久 , 觉得这是最适合

我的专业。”

谈及学习中医的心得 , 慕斯蒂卡

表示 , 面对病人的症状 , 中医没有绝对

的答案 , 可用不同的疗法。比如病人咳

嗽 , 有些医师认为要先治肺 , 开出清热

解毒的药方 , 但另一位医师也许会从五

行原理下手 , 土能生金 , 而肺属金 , 因

此治肺应从 “ 培土 ” 做起 , 透过治脾胃

来加强肺部 , 培土生金即补脾益肺。让

人意想不到的治疗方法 , 让慕斯蒂卡折

服。

“ 我觉得有趣的地方就在这里 ,

就像针灸穴位寻经的理论 , 我也觉得很

神奇 , 比如有病人患上皮肤病 , 某处皮

肤痕痒 , 我就用相关经络的药物下去治

疗 , 应该就会痊愈了。”

慕斯蒂卡希望学成之后能够将中医

发扬光大 , 把知识传授给族人 , 并教导

他们养生之道。“ 其实在马来人的观念

里 , 食物也有不同的属性 , 如果我告诉

他们 ‘ini makanan panas( 这种食物燥

热 ), ini makanan sejuk’( 这种食物性

寒 ), 他们都能够明白。所以当我在看

诊时 , 不管是从中医角度 , 或是马来人

的角度出发 , 其实都是说得通的。”

学中医有大用

2019 年大学本科毕业后 , 慕斯蒂卡曾

在上海医院的诊所实习一年 , 但之后她

并未踏上执业之路 , 而是选择回到校园

继续深造 , 预计 2021 年完成硕士学位。

表面上看来 , 她的学医之路一帆风顺 ,

但背后默默吞下的苦水只有自己知道。

由于父亲早逝 , 家境也不宽裕 , 慕斯蒂

卡和弟弟是在母亲和外公辛苦拉拔下长

大的。升中学时 , 由于国立中学的华文

班与宗教课的上课时间冲突 , 而独立中

学的学费对她而言是一笔沉重的负担 ,

差点因此断了学习华文之路。幸好后来

她的母校 —— 马六甲培风中学提供助学

金 , 助她完成学业 , 其后也争取到上海

中医药大学奖学金 , 负笈海外。

对于选择中医这门专业 , 慕斯蒂

卡笑言 , 身边的人都泼她冷水 , 母亲也

担心念中医出路会受限 , 但她总是一

笑置之 , 清楚自己走的是与众不同的道

路 :“ 我觉得西医的竞争更激烈 , 而我

念中医 , 会更有未来、更有特色。别人

担心学中医没有未来 , 赚不到钱 , 但我

不相信。中医很特别 , 我也深信自己能

够学好。”

事实上 , 慕斯蒂卡大学毕业以前就

已经有人向她提供工作机会 , 因此她不

认为学中医没有出路。她说 , 也许有些

人想法比较狭隘 , 认定中医就只能待在

小诊所看病 , 但她从不给自己设限 , 不

管是当宣传、当顾问 , 还是提供培训 ,

她深信中医能够与不同领域结合。

2019 年 8 月 , 慕斯蒂卡受邀站上全球

知识共享平台 TEDx 演讲 , 分享学华语、

学中医的甘苦。标准的咬字、流利的表

达 , 加上自信稳健的台风 , 让许多人对

这位小妮子刮目相看。她表示 , 自从那

场演讲过后 , 很多不同领域的公司都来

找她谈合作 , 包括运动、美容品牌 , 甚

至是人工智能 (AI) 公司等 , 更让她确

信只要敢于跳出框框 , 没什么是不可能

的。

华文成绩冠全班

慕斯蒂卡能有今日的成就 , 她的外公厥

功甚伟。身为退休校长的外公很欣赏华

人勤勉、拼搏的精神 , 除了把女儿 , 也

就是慕斯蒂卡的母亲送到华小念书 , 也

坚持让两名外孙接受华文教育。

万事起头难 , 一开始慕斯蒂卡连华

语的声调也搞不清楚 , 后来外公规定她

和老师、同学沟通时必须使用华语 , 才

让她逐渐掌握这门语言。她笑言 , 对她

来说 , 拼音、声调不是最难的 , 更困难

的接踵而来 —— 成语的意思和用法、多

音多义字、形似字等 ; 而语法和写作也

是她的弱点 , 常常会用错词 , 或是造出

语意不通的句子。

为了学好华文 , 她特别下过苦功。

记得小六检定考试 (UPSR) 前的几个

月 , 慕斯蒂卡的作文水平还是有待改

进 , 老师当着同学面前指正她 , 让她决

心恶补。她每天手捧华文书 , 参考模

范作文怎么写 , 还会特别留意词语的

用法、句子结构 , 记下优美的句子和成

语。

“ 可能我的个性比较好胜 , 我希望

七个科目都拿 A, 不想因为华文科没拿 A

而让成绩单不完美。” 慕斯蒂卡坚持了

几个月的苦读最终获得丰硕的回报 , 不

但获得 7A, 作文分数更拿下 92 分 , 与另

一名华族同学并列最高分。

她表示 , 虽然外公不谙华文 , 却

经常鼓励她 , 在华校上课不仅要学会语

言 , 也要学习华族优良文化。而从小就

接触《论语》, 也给她往后的人生带来

深远影响 , 不管待人处事都虚心秉持儒

学之道。

“ 外公鼓励我要认真学习《论

语》, 它不违反我们的宗教 , 它是好

的 , 是几千年流传下来的智慧结晶 , 所

以我会特别认真学习。” 她说 , 外公属

于比较开明的长辈 , 经常会主动问起她

的学习状况 , 并且会和她讨论课程内

容。而当初学习《论语》也让她奠下文

言文的根基 , 大学期间学习《黄帝内

经》才不会太吃力。

“ 苦学不辍 , 好学不倦 ” 是慕斯蒂

卡的最佳写照 , 除了马来语、华语、英

语外 , 她还会说上海话和法语 , 并希望

能够学习德语和西班牙语。她表示 , 在

上海实习期间 , 她所接触的病人当中有

80% 属老一辈 , 多数都说上海话。她在

学校只学过一个月的上海话 , 后来靠着

自己摸索 , 慢慢学会了医学上的用语 ,

比如睡眠、排泄、胃口等 , 才有办法和

病人沟通 ; 至于法语她则是跟一位法国

朋友学习。

敞开心胸接纳不同文化

慕斯蒂卡表示 , 有别于一般人的成长环

境 , 包括从小就在华校接受教育 , 让她

更能够敞开心胸接受不同文化的熏陶。

她说 , 不少马来西亚的朋友告诉她 , 他

们不知道怎么跟外国人做朋友 , 也不太

愿意了解他族文化。

“ 小时候我听不懂华语 , 但不会觉

得别人在我面前讲华语而感到不舒服。

所以现在我也愿意跟一群泰国朋友到哈

尔滨旅行 , 虽然不懂泰语 , 但也不会觉

得尴尬。有时朋友们在聊些有趣的事

情 , 也会翻译让我知道 , 所以其实不必

对他人存有敌意。”

这种宽容大气、兼容并蓄的态度

是长辈灌输她的观念 , 不排斥 , 也不敌

视 , 她一直谨记在心。正是这股正气 ,

才让慕斯蒂卡显得如此坚定有力 , 她

以《黄帝内经》的这句话作为座右铭 :

sepanjang 23 tahun, Azrina Binti Azmi berkata

tentang kepentingan keluarga dan pekerjaan.

My name is Azrina Binti Azmi. My

family and I moved to Perak’s

Chenderiang when I was still

young. My father was a fruit farmer and

my mother was a housewife. Life was hard

then. As such, I have always hoped to find a

good job to build a better life for my family.

Getting Started

When my cousin told me that there was

a vacancy in POPULAR, I made my way to

Kuala Lumpur without hesitation. I went

straight to the POPULAR Bookstore in Atria,

Damansara Jaya for an interview with the

bookstore manager Chew Min Sun and

assistant manager Yvvone Ho Siet Lian.

I started off in the Stationery

Department as a sales assistant and also

worked as a part-time cashier. It was not

plain-sailing in the beginning as I made

countless mistakes during work, but my


supervisor Shamsiah Jusoh constantly

encouraged me to improve and become

a better person. My next challenge was to

learn how to use a computer. Handling the

cash register was already terrifying to me;

figuring out the computer was double the

fear.

I took all the challenges in stride. My

perseverance paid off when I was promoted

to a supervisor in the English Department.

With my new appointment came a new

challenge! I had to familiarise myself with

all the English books quickly, but I knew

I would overcome this new hurdle if I

continued to improve myself.

A Bittersweet Lesson

My first lesson could not have come sooner.

I was helping a customer find a book,

Chicken Soup for The Soul, at the POPULAR

Atria outlet. The computer system indicated

that 10 copies were available, but when

I brought the customer to the cookbook

section, I just could not find any. The

confused costumer shook his head and said,

“The book I’m looking for is a motivational

book, not a cookbook.” I realised my blunder

and hurriedly went straight to the correct

section to find the book in question sitting

on the top shelf.

Sadly, the Atria outlet was permanently

closed a few years later, and I was

transferred to the children’s books section

at a new outlet at Ikano Power Centre. The

ambience at the POPULAR Ikano Power

Centre outlet was different as it was the

largest bookstore at that time. At this outlet,

I noticed the increasing popularity of the

Malay-language books that covered a wide

spectrum of genres like novels, religious

books, motivational, and cookbooks. It was

a thrilling time, and I am grateful to have

been able to do my part then.

Subsequently, I was assigned to the

POPULAR Kuantan Mega Mall outlet for

three months of training, learning all about

the Malay market as the book sales on the

east coast of Malaysia were fast developing.

I returned to Ikano as a Merchandising

Officer in the English Merchandising

Department in 2005. The Merchandising

Department was transferred to the Asmah

Tower outlet in 2007. By then, the Malay

book market was expanding rapidly and

this led to the establishment of the Malay

Merchandising Department.

Families at Home and at Work

My family has supported me through the

years. My father would often advise me to

leave expectations behind and face all our

challenges head-on instead of running

away. He often said that trying times helped

us to grow through life to become the best

version of ourselves. I always remember my

grandmother’s advice: “Be like a good seed.

A good seed when thrown ashore becomes

a mountain, and if thrown into the sea, turns

into an island.” Her words have constantly

reminded me to carry myself with dignity,

and that I must learn to adapt when faced

with uncertainty.

At work, all of my colleagues are family

members to me. Many have inspired me to

be my best, including Ms Lim Lee Ngoh, the

Executive Director of Popular Malaysia. Her

enthusiasm and dedication to work, as well

as the commitment she puts into running

the company, has left a deep impression

on me. I would say that her relentless

effort plays a major role in making Popular

Malaysia a household name in Malaysia. I

am proud to be a part of her team.

I hope and pray that POPULAR will

remain strong in today’s difficult times,

ready for any challenge ahead. May we all

succeed in the future!

是阿兹莉娜 · 宾蒂 · 阿兹米 , 小

我时候原住在马来西亚彭亨州而连

突县的德甘哥打河垦殖区 , 考取 SPM 大

马教育文凭后 , 和家人迁至霹雳州巴当

帕当区的积莪营镇。当时生活维艰 , 父

亲是果农 , 母亲是家庭主妇 , 我在八个

孩子中排行老大 , 总盼望长大后觅得优

差 , 让家人过上好日子。

在大众工作起步

一天 , 我的堂表亲回到乡下 , 告知大众

书局有个工作机会 , 我便毫不犹豫地南

下到吉隆坡。他领我到白沙罗再也的阿

特里亚购物廊大众门市 , 当时的面试官

是门市经理 Chew Min Sun 和副经理何雪

莲。

加入大众后 , 我从文具部销售助理

做起 , 也兼职收银员 , 从中学习记录和

熟悉商品。工作初期并非一帆风顺 , 经

常出错 , 还好当时的主管珊茜雅 · 祖梭

一直鼓励我善加改进。另一项挑战则是

学用电脑 , 处理 “ 钱事 ” 已教我直冒冷

汗 , 操作电脑更是让我胆怯不已。尽管

如此 , 我正面迎战 ; 天道酬勤 , 我获擢

升为英文部主管 , 拉近我与书的缘分。

虽然这项委任附带了必须迅速熟悉所有

英文书的挑战 , 不过我深知只要持续精

进 , 定能克服难关。

难忘的一堂课

不久 , 我的职场第一堂课就来了。记得

那时在阿特里亚购物廊大众门市里 ,


有一位顾客请我帮忙找一本《心灵鸡

汤》。我查了电脑系统 , 嗯 , 有 10 本 ,

于是我带着顾客来到食谱区 , 却没找

着。那位顾客一脸困惑 , 摇头说道 :

“ 我找的是励志书 , 不是食谱。” 这时

我才恍然大悟 “ 此鸡汤非彼鸡汤 ”, 羞

愧地疾行至正确的书区 , 那本书就置于

书架最高层。虽然我不是标准的 “ 嗜读

者 ”, 不过我喜欢看着五颜六色的书籍

封面摆在一起 , 如此赏心悦目 , 每本书

都蕴含作者的心血与洞见。

阿特里亚购物廊大众门市在数年后

关闭 , 我被调到 Ikano Power Centre( 今

IPC 购物中心 ) 大众新门市的童书区。

那里的氛围与众不同 , 因为它是那时规

模最大的书局。在那家门市 , 我发现马

来文书籍渐受欢迎 , 书种多元 , 包括小

说、宗教书、励志书、食谱等 , 真是令

人兴奋。有幸成为书局的一分子 , 让人

感恩。

之后 , 因应东海岸书业的发展 ,

我被委派到彭亨州关丹 Mega Mall 受训三

个月 , 以了解马来文书业变化的趋

势。2005 年 , 我重返 Ikano Power Centre

门市 , 担任英文书籍采购部的采购

员。2007 年 , 采购部迁至 Asmah Tower 门

市。那时 , 马来文书业如雨后春笋般蓬

勃发展 , 大众也因而设立了马来文书籍

采购部。

家人鼓励 , 热诚工作

多年来父母都全力支持我的工作 , 父亲

常提醒我莫忘初衷 , 直面挑战与逆境 ,

不当生活的逃兵。他常言 , 困难可以拉

拔我们成长 , 吃苦当吃补 , 才能有所成

就 , 也提醒我要时时守护自己的心。已

故祖母有句话 , 我一直记在心上 :“ 做

一颗善种 , 弃于陆可成山 , 弃于海可成

岛 ”, 这句话时时提醒我自重自爱 , 学

习适应未知的一切。

工作上 , 每位同事就如同我的家

人 , 启迪我发挥潜能 , 做到最好 , 例如

马来西亚大众执行董事林利娥女士对工

作的全情投入 , 让我印象深刻 , 大众书

局之所以能成为马来西亚家喻户晓的品

牌 , 她的不懈努力是功不可没的 , 我以

身为大众团队一员为荣。

我祈望大众能在眼下的困境中保持

壮大 , 时刻备战。愿我们未来都能有所

成 !

我以身为大众团队一员为荣。

Saya bangga kerana menjadi sebahagian daripada

POPULAR.

Saya berasal dari sebuah kampung

yang dinamakan Felda Sungai Tekam

Getah. Saya dan keluarga berpindah

ke Chenderiang Perak selepas sahaja saya

mengambil sijil SPM. Bapa saya bekerja

di kebun buahan-buahan setelah tamat

perkhidmatan di Jabatan Ukur, manakala

emak saya adalah suri rumah tangga.

Kehidupan kami sekeluarga pada ketika

itu sangat susah. Saya adalah anak sulong

daripada 8 orang adik beradik.

Justeru itu, saya amat berharap agar

satu hari saya akan dapat bekerja, meski

pun di dalam hati tersimpan niat untuk

melanjutkan pelajaran, saya akur dan

berdoa semoga saya akan dapat pekerjaan

yang baik demi untuk membantu keluarga.

Pengalaman Bermula

Pada suatu hari, sepupu saya pulang ke

kampung dan memberitahu bahawa ada

kekosongan di Kedai Buku POPULAR. Tanpa

berfikir panjang saya setuju untuk pergi

ke Kuala Lumpur. Setibanya saya di Kuala

Lumpur, beliau membawa saya ke Kedai

Buku POPULAR di Atria, di Damansara Jaya

untuk ditemuduga. Pengurus kedai buku

yang telah menemuduga saya pada ketika

itu adalah En Chew Min Sun dan Penolong

Pengurusnya adalah Yvonne Ho Siet

Lian. Syukur kepada Allah SWT saya telah

diterima untuk bekerja di Jabatan Alat Tulis.

Saya mula berkhidmat di Jabatan

Alat Tulis sebagai pembantu jualan, dan

menjadi juruwang secara sambilan. Di

Jabatan Alat Tulis, saya banyak belajar

selok belok berkenaan dengan produk

dan dokumentasi. Saya sangat beruntung

kerana berada di bawah seliaan Cik Yvonne

Ho yang pada ketika itu adalah penolong

pengurus dan penyelia saya iaitu Puan

Shamsiah Jusoh dan rakan-rakan yang

banyak membantu dan mengajar saya.

Seperti remaja di luar sana, saya juga

tidak terlepas dari melakukan kesalahan

displin di tempat kerja, sehingga pada

satu masa saya diminta untuk bertukar

kecawangan lain. Puan Shamsiah yang

banyak memberi nasihat kepada saya untuk

berubah dan menjadi insan yang lebih

baik. Pada waktu itulah saya diminta untuk

belajar menggunakan komputer. Saya

sangat takut pada ketika itu, menyentuh

mesin wang pun saya sudah seram sejuk

inikan pula menyentuh komputer.

Dari situ saya mula bangkit dan

bekerja dengan bersungguh-sungguh dan

akhirnya diberi peluang untuk kenaikan

pangkat menjadi penyelia di Jabatan

Bahasa inggeris. Sekali lagi saya diuji

dengan masalah besar, tetapi saya tahu

masalah ini adalah masalah yang memberi

kebaikan kepada saya kerana saya perlu

belajar tentang buku, bukan buku Bahasa

melayu tetapi buku Bahasa Inggeris. Maka

bermulah kisah saya dan buku.

Pengalaman Manis untuk Dikenang

Antara kenangan manis yang tidak dapat

saya lupakan semasa di Jabatan Bahasa

Inggeris di POPULAR Atria adalah, apabila

saya menawarkan perkhidmatan kepada

pelanggan untuk mencari sebuah buku

yang bertajuk “Chicken Soup for The Soul”.

Pada mulanya saya cuba menyemak

status stok di dalam sistem, dan ia

menunjukkan terdapat 10 naskah, lalu saya

terus pergi ke rak buku masakan di ikuti oleh

pelanggan tersebut. Saya terus mencari

tetapi tidak jumpa, sehingga pelanggan


tersebut bertanya kepada saya, “Apa yang

kamu cari di rak buku masakan ini?”, saya

menjawap, “Saya sedang mencari buku

yang Encik mahukan”. Pelanggan tersebut

mengelengkan kepala dan berkata kepada

saya, “Buku yang saya cari adalah buku

motivasi bukan buku masakan”. Pada ketika

itu saya berasa amat malu dan di dalam hati

saya rasa ingin ketawa. Kemudiannya saya

terus pergi ke rak buku motivasi, ternyata

buku tersebut ada di rak paling atas.

Saya bukan lah seorang yang suka

membaca, tetapi saya suka melihat

susunan buku berwarna-warni dengan reka

muka buku yang menarik yang pastinya

setiap naskah mengandungi sebuah cerita

yang diilhamkan oleh sang pengkarya yang

begitu bijak.

Selang beberapa tahun, pihak syarikat

terpaksa menutup operasi kedai buku di

Atria. Kami semua beralih arah ke tempat

baru di Ikano Power Center. Ada di antara

rakan-rakan ditukarkan ke cawangan lain

seperti di Jaya Seksyen 14, Petaling Jaya. Di

Popular Ikano Power Center, suasana amat

berbeza kerana kedai ini adalah kedai buku

terbesar pada ketika itu. Saya diletakkan di

bahagian kanak-kanak.

Semasa di Ikano saya mula nampak

adanya buku Bahasa Melayu, seperti Novel,

Buku Agama, Motivasi dan Buku Masakan.

Jualan Buku Melayu pada ketika itu, sedang

meningkat naik.

Cabaran Baru, Pengalaman Baru

Pada tahun 2005 semasa saya di Ikano, saya

dilamar untuk menyertai pasukan Jabatan

Perdagangan Bahasa Inggeris di bawah

seliaan Puan Samantha Tang. Sebelum

menyertai pasukan tersebut saya dihantar

ke POPULAR Kuantan Mega Mall selama

tiga bulan bagi mempelajari selok belok

buku melayu kerana pada ketika itu, pasaran

buku melayu di pantai timur sangat maju.

Selepas tiga bulan saya kembali bekerja

di Ikano sebagai Pegawai Perdagangan di

Jabatan Bahasa Inggeris dan pada ketika itu

pasukan saya yang lain berada di POPULAR

Cheras Leisure Mall, dan akhirnya pada

tahun 2007 semua ahli pasukan di Jabatan

Perdagangan telah dipindahkan ke Asmah

Tower.

Namun, pada tahun 2009 Puan

Samantha telah meninggalkan kami kerana

beralih arah ke bidang yang lain dan En

Chew Cheong Tat dari EPH Publishing yang

masuk bagi menggantikan beliau.

Bermulalah suatu perjuangan bersama

En Chew Cheong Tat dalam industri

buku melayu yang bagitu hebat. Pasaran

buku melayu melonjak naik sehingga

mencapai peningkatan dua digit setiap

bulan. Sehinggalah bahagian buku melayu

pada ketika itu menjadi Jabatan Bahasa

Melayu. Dan saya tidak keseorangan pada

ketika itu, Puan Nurzahidah telah diambil

masuk ke dalam jabatan bagi membantu

untuk mengembangkan lagi jualan buku

di Jabatan Bahasa Melayu sehinggalah

Jabatan Bahasa Melayu kini mempunyai 5

orang staf.

Pendorong Semangat

Insan yang menjadi pendorong kepada

saya untuk terus bekerja di POPULAR adalah

kedua ibu bapa saya. Bapa saya sering

berpesan kepada saya untuk melayari

kehidupan yang mencabar ini, kita kena

hadapi setiap cabaran dan dugaan, jangan

lari dari masalah tetapi hadapi masalah

tersebut, kerana ia akan mematangkan kita.

Jangan lupa asal usul kita.

Kata-kata Semangat

Masih terpahat dalam ingatan saya

pesanan penuh bermakna yang diberikan

oleh arwah nenek saya, “Jadilah seperti

benih yang baik. Benih yang baik kalau

dicampak ke darat menjadi gunung dan jika

dicampak ke laut menjadi pulau & masuk

ke dalam kandang kambing mengembek,

masuk ke dalam kandang kerbau menguak,

maksudnya apabila berada di tempat orang

atau negara orang, kita harus ikut adab atau

aturan di tempat atau negara itu.”

Pesanan yang paling utama dari ayah

saya yang saya pegang sehingga hari ini

adalah “JAGALAH HATI, pasti selamat di

dunia dan akhirat.”

Idolaku

Insan yang menjadi idola saya adalah Puan

Lim Lee Ngoh. Saya begitu kagum dengan

semangat serta kesungguhan beliau dalam

menjalankan tugas. Beliau begitu komited

dalam menjalankan tanggungjawap

kepada syarikat, kerana beliau lah POPULAR

Book Co. (M) Sdn Bhd kini menjadi sebuah

syarikat yang begitu teguh dan kecekalan

beliau menjadi tunggak utama syarikat.

Saya bangga kerana menjadi sebahagian

daripada POPULAR.

Saya berharap dan berdoa semoga

POPULAR akan teguh dalam menghadapi

zaman yang mencabar pada ketika ini,

bersiap sedia menghadapi apa jua cabaran

mendatang. Semoga kita sama-sama

meraih kejayaan di masa akan datang.

克罗地亚 : 中世纪王国风情

near you while in Croatia!

克罗地亚的奇幻古风 , 成为影视取景的热点。

漫游古城 , 惊喜无限 !

It is never a disappointment to visit

Croatia, a country with a rich medieval

history. Despite its bitter history up to the

dissolution of the Yugoslavia in the 1990s,

Croatia has lifted itself in the ensuing years

by driving its economy through tourism. A

visit to Croatia is truly intoxicating – I simply

cannot get enough of it.

罗地亚本是中世纪王国 , 拥有丰

克富深厚的历史文化 , 到此旅游绝

对不会失望。在 1990 年代脱离南斯拉夫

之后 , 克罗地亚走上了独立自主之路 ,

通过发展旅游业振兴经济 , 自强不息。

踏上克罗地亚之行 , 中世纪的风情令我

深深陶醉 , 难以忘怀。


Dubrovnik and Lokrum

In recent years, many have travelled here

due to the popularity of the Game of

Thrones drama series. Little did I know that

I would visit one of its filming locations at

Lokrum, the most famous medieval town in

southern Croatia on an island off the coast

of Dubrovnik. I sat on the “Iron Throne” from

the series, which had been left on the island

after filming ended. Lokrum also boasts

a blue lagoon in the middle of the island,

which is essentially a dead sea. Floating on

the salty water, I saw many wild peacocks

flying overhead, and they did not appear to

be afraid of humans.

杜布罗夫尼克与洛克鲁姆岛

近年不少人因爆红的美国电视剧《权力

的游戏》而慕名前往克罗地亚旅游。我

误打误撞 , 有幸参访了剧中一个拍摄地

点 : 位于克罗地亚南部杜布罗夫尼克城

对岸的洛克鲁姆岛 , 一个富有中世纪风

情的著名城镇。剧中使用的道具 “ 铁王

座 ” 至今仍完好无损地保留在岛上 , 让

我幸运地坐上宝座 , 享受为王的滋味。

小岛中央有一座碧绿的咸水湖 , 水不

扬波 , 悠闲浮游 , 不少野生孔雀横空飞

过 , 看来并不怕生。

The Pearl of the Adriatic

The old city of Dubrovnik, the pearl of the

Adriatic, was declared an UNESCO World

Heritage Site in 1979. Built between the

12 th and 17 th centuries to protect the

citizens, the great walls of this ancient city

are reminiscent of the Great Wall of China.

The old city is still very much alive. As

I walked around the wall, I could peek

into the lives of the ordinary citizens of

Dubrovnik below. This old city is the top

tourist attraction in Croatia, if not in the

Balkans.

亚得里亚海上的珍珠

杜布罗夫尼克古城有 “ 亚得里亚海上的

珍珠 ” 之美誉 ,1979 年被列为联合国教

科文组织世界遗产地。围绕古城的防御

城墙建于 12 至 17 世纪间 , 让人不禁联想

到中国的万里长城。

杜布罗夫尼克古城依然焕发着蓬勃的生

命力。我沿着城墙漫步 , 一窥城下市民

热闹的日常生活。这座古城已晋升为克

罗地亚 , 甚至是整个巴尔干地区的旅游

首选。


Bullet Holes on the Walls

Walking around, I have come to appreciate

the efforts made to restore this medieval

town after it was devastated by earthquakes

and the civil war in the 1990s. Bullet holes

are still visible on its walls, reminding us

how a town that took years to build can be

ruined in the blink of an eye. I have travelled

to Croatia six times. All the Croatians I have

met were friendly and lively, while also

acknowledging the terrible costs of war.

They embrace their past but have moved

on to focus of making their lives better.

城墙上的弹孔

杜布罗夫尼克历经无数次地震与 1990

年代的内战。漫游城中 , 深深体会到修

复这座中世纪古城所须投注的心血。城

墙上的子弹孔清晰可见 , 提醒我们多年

打造的城镇也可能毁于一旦。我曾到过

克罗地亚六次 , 感觉当地人友善热情。

虽然他们都谨记战争带来的惨痛代价 ,

但已卸下历史包袱 , 致力于改善眼下的

生活。

Split

Going up north of Dubrovnik, you will find

another popular tourist spot – Split. Their

most famous attractions are Diocletian's

Palace and Mausoleum, and the Cathedral

and Bell Tower of Saint Domnius – another

UNESCO World Heritage Site within

Croatia. I was impressed not only with the

monuments themselves but the way they

were blended into modern living. Here,

the basement of an ancient building has

been become a shopping arcade, with a

pillar of ancient building located inside a

supermarket. History does not only exist

in textbooks, it is all around you. This is the

beauty of Split.

从杜布罗夫尼克北上 , 到达另一个旅游

热点 —— 斯普利特 , 其著名景点包括戴

克里先宫及陵寢 , 以及圣多米努斯大教

堂及钟楼 , 这是克罗地亚境内另一处联

合国教科文组织世界遗产地。除了历史

古迹本身令人惊叹之外 , 这里的古迹竟

还能与现代生活完美结合 , 例如有一座

历史建筑的地下层已改建为购物商场 ,

古老支柱就坐落在现代化的超级市场

里 , 不可思议。原来 , 历史不止在教科

书出现 , 还无处不在 , 斯普利特的魅力

可见一斑。


Pula

Continue to travel north, you will arrive at

a Roman amphitheatre in a city called Pula.

The best preserved Roman arena outside of

Italy, this amphitheatre was built between

27 BC to 68 AD. Different from those found

in Italy, this specimen is situated close to

the seashore, which is unusual. Open to

public, I could feel the power when I stood

in the middle of the circle, imagining being

cheered on by 20,000 spectators! Pula is

also home to the Temple of Augustus that

was built between 2 BC and 14 AD.

普拉

再继续往北行 , 您会来到普拉市内建于

公元前 27 年至公元 68 年间的古罗马圆形

剧场 , 这是意大利以外保存最完好的罗

马竞技场。有别于意大利竞技场 , 这座

古迹濒临大海 , 更显独特。这座剧场对

外开放 , 我站在中央 , 想象四周有两万

名观众为我喝彩 , 奇幻无比 ! 普拉市内

Zagreb

Unlike Pula, Split and Dubrovnik, Zagreb –

the capital city of Croatia – is not located

along the coast. It is a city full of amazing

ancient architecture. Walking along the

streets in Zagreb is like walking through a

time tunnel. You can also almost see the

lifestyle of people living in the old days as if

time has stopped.

萨格勒布

萨格勒布是克罗地亚的首都 , 富有迷人

的古建筑 ; 有别于普拉、斯普利特、杜

布罗夫尼克 , 萨格勒布不是沿海城市。

漫步街道 , 市民们仍循着传统方式度

Between Architecture and History

by Yeo Kang Shua is a document

of a restoration project of the titular

Chinese temple. Through a combination

of photography, graphics, and text, it

also presents ideas of restoration and

conservation, and an understanding of

how we can connect modern sensibilities

with heritage and history. These issues

have especial significance in a city like

Singapore where urban development can

rapidly transform a cityscape. Yeo’s book is

a testament to an approach to history and

heritage without resorting to a rhetoric of

pure nostalgia.

History

Standing among the skyscrapers of Raffles

Place, Wak Hai Cheng Bio (also known as

the Yueh Hai Ching Temple) is the oldest

Teochew temple in Singapore. Built in a

traditional Teochew architectural style,

it has been managed by the Ngee Ann

Kongsi since 1845 and was gazetted as a

national monument in 1996. The temple

has seen multiple rounds of restoration

and reconstruction over its long history,

and this book details the most recent

restoration project, which began in 2012

and was completed in 2014. The project

has seen great recognition in the form of

various awards, including the UNESCO Asia-

Pacific Heritage Awards for Culture Heritage

Conservation Award of Merit.

Serving as one of the consultants for

this project, Yeo Kang Shua is Associate

Professor of Architectural History,

Theory and Criticism in Architecture and

Sustainable Design at the Singapore

University of Technology and Design. Yeo’s

research is concentrated in Chinese heritage

and architectural conservation, and a

number of his research projects involve

field investigations on the conservation of

various iconic buildings in Singapore.

More than a simple record of the

project, the book is framed by five simple

questions that concisely describe the

primary concerns of conservation: What is to

be kept? What is to be removed? What is to

be reinforced? What is to be rebuilt? What is

to be added? It is divided into sections that

focus on the different aspects of restoration

work – such as tiles, woodwork, ceramics,

and painting – and describes them in

considerable detail. Along with archival

images, documentary photographs,

and the restoration project proposal,

the temple is presented in numerous

photographs at different stages of the

restoration process. These images capture

both the physical aspects of the temple

in remarkable detail, as well as the work

processes of the craftsmen performing the

restoration, in effect showing the temple

undergoing transformation. Meanwhile,

the text showcases the vast amount of

research and investigation that had to be

completed before the restoration could

take place. Short explanatory passages

describe relevant details. Captions support

the already information-rich photographs.

By focusing on the craftsmanship and

conservation, the book reaches beyond

the boundaries of being a simple record of

a temple restoration. It turns the spotlight

to the ideas that underpin restoration and

conservation.

Paradox

In considering the idea of conservation,

however, we must also consider the

paradox that lies at the heart of it.

I was immediately taken by the design

of the book. It has heft, as though insisting

on its presence, its physicality – and by

extension, the temple’s physical aspect. The

book’s design, by Practice Theory, is bold,

eye-catching, and thoughtful, appealing

to contemporary sensibilities while

supporting the contents of the book with

a clear concept.

The colours used evoke the look of the

temple, but also their symbolic meaning in

the wider context of Chinese culture. From

the red and green on the cover to pages

printed on bright yellow paper, the colour

choices are imbued with meaning. On the

other hand, the layout of photographs

encourages a reader to glance across the

pages at the images, to focus in on the

details in some instances and to take in the

big picture in others, almost as though they

were moving in space. In other words, the

design of the book not only supports the

ideas contained within its text and images,

but it references the physical experience of

being in the temple.

Of course, no book can ever substitute

for a physical experience. Similarly, no

matter the amount of detail contained

within the pages, it is impossible to create a

complete record of such a complex project.

Such impossibilities represent a pursuit

of the ideal, which is a tension central to

restoration and conservation, and may best

be embodied by the technical drawings

and floorplans of the temple interposed


within the pages. These diagrams give a

clear picture of the physical dimensions

or names for the features of the temple, or

offer a precise idea of the physical layout

of the temple. Yet, despite precise labels

and mathematical figures, they are but

representations of a perfect original, an

ideal, untouched.

Similarly, we can never return to

history, and perhaps this is why the book

begins with archival images. It establishes

the temple in another time, in another

place, a location that we can never return

to. Implicit in the five questions that seem

to sketch the basic practical concerns of a

conservator is also the greater philosophical

negotiation between the ideals and realities

of conservation work.

Dialogue

Yet, if restoration and conservation will

never fulfil their promise, what is their

purpose?

In Wak Hai Cheng Bio, we see that the

artistry of the craftsman is also the artistry

of the temple’s builders. In other words, we

are shown the lineage that connects us to

our forebears, and the physical objects and

structures that attest to it. The relief frescoes

are described in terms of the craftsmanship

and situated within the context of Teochew

art. Even the history of paint use in Chinese

culture is briefly elaborated upon. More

basically, in each strut, each pillar, each tile,

one sees the marks of history.

The book’s title refers to “a dialogue

between architecture and history”. This

encapsulates the tension that is at the heart

of cultural heritage and history. Without an

active engagement, cultural heritage can

seem a dull topic, and without restoration,

our cultural artefacts remain inert or slowly

decaying. If every place is continually

transforming, the greater cultural context

that it is situated in is also constantly

shifting too. History is contained within

architecture, but through architecture, we

can also engage with culture. In that sense,

this book is also a part of the conservation

effort. The boldness of the concept and

the thoughtfulness behind its execution all

suggest that it is designed to be more than

a simple record of the restoration project.

Conservation attempts to arrest an

ideal, but also embraces the constant

transformation of any cultural artefact.

With knowledge, craft, and artistry, it puts

the perfect idea of a building or an object

into conversation with the present. The

restoration project is the culmination of

great research and understanding, field

investigations, exceptional skill, and no

small amount of physical labour. The work

of conservation may be understood as

a work of preservation and restoration,

yet these terms necessarily obscure its

arguably greater significance, as an act

of re-positioning, reintroducing what

might seem antiquated or irrelevant into

a contemporary context. There is a small

section in Wak Hai Cheng Bio that talks about

the installation of modern lighting fixtures

to illuminate the temple that is emblematic

of this. It is an act of revitalisation.

Every book is a communicative device,

its primary objective being connection. In

Yeo’s book, this is emphasised. The bold yet

pleasant design of the book, the clarity of

presentation, and the meticulous layouts

make the book inviting, lowering barriers

by introducing ideas of culture and heritage

in a package that matches contemporary

sensibilities. Just as the restoration and

conservation of the temple is a project of

revitalising the centuries-old temple within

its modern setting, the book continues the

work by inviting readers to consider issues

of history, culture, and memory.

The book places us readers in dialogue

with history and Chinese culture, much

as the craftsmen and consultants had to

during the restoration project. It is a book

that documents the restoration of this

extraordinary temple, but also a statement

on the importance of conservation work

as the key to finding continued relevance

for pieces of our cultural heritage in this

fast-moving world. Perhaps most of all,

it is a testament to the possibilities of

publications in bridging the divide between

past and present, to the necessary work of

remembering beyond simple historical fact,

to the beginnings of dialogues.

茳善于 2019 年出版著作《粤海清

杨庙 : 建筑与历史的对话》, 通过

照片、绘图和文字 , 记写了这座新加坡

古庙的修复工程。此书也为古迹修复和

保护工作提供新视角 , 并探讨传统文化

与历史如何与现代生活结合。这些课题

对如新加坡这类现代都市意义深远 , 因

为城市的高速发展正在改变整个市容景

观。此书即为历史和文化的保存提供借

鉴之道 , 而不仅是一味的追思与缅怀。

百年古刹的历史

粤海清庙坐落于高楼林立的莱佛士坊 ,

是新加坡最古老的潮州庙宇。这座富有

潮汕建筑特色的庙宇 , 自 1845 年起由义

安公司负责管理 , 于 1996 年被列为新加

坡国家古迹。在漫长的岁月中 , 粤海清

庙历经多次修复与重建工程。本书即记

录了最近一次于 2012 年起始、2014 年

竣工的修复工程 , 这项工程倍受外界肯

定 , 更赢得不少国际奖项 , 包括联合国

教科文组织亚太区文化遗产保护奖。

杨茳善是新加坡科技大学建筑与可

持续设计系副教授 , 也是此项目的顾问

之一。他的主要研究方向是华族文化与

建筑保护 , 研究专项包括保护新加坡标

志性建筑的田野调查。

此书不仅纯粹记录这项修复工程 ,

还提出了 “ 古迹修复五问 ”: 该保留什

么 ? 该剔除什么 ? 该加强什么 ? 该重建

什么 ? 该添加什么 ? 书中各章从不同面

向详述此次修复工作 , 例如瓷砖、木

工、陶土和图画。除了档案图片、纪实

照片 , 以及工程计划书 , 本书也通过摄

影呈现各阶段的庙宇修复过程。这些照

片细腻捕捉庙宇建筑特点 , 也突出了

工匠的修复作业程序 , 凸显古庙换装的

面貌。此外 , 内文记叙了修复前所进行

的大规模调研工作 , 为读者描述相关细

节 , 附上的图说也为相关照片作进一步

的注解。

此书在记录庙宇修复工程之时 , 聚

焦于古迹的保护与工匠的手艺 , 让人们

对建筑修复与保护的概念有更深入的

古迹保护的矛盾冲突

我们在探讨古迹保护的概念时 , 也需要

反思其中的矛盾冲突。

此书的设计深深地吸引了我。它相

当厚重 , 仿佛是想透过具体重量来证明

它的存在 , 从而让人联想到庙宇的实

体建筑。全书由 “Practice Theory” 设

计 , 整体前卫抢眼 , 不但具有现代美

感 , 也以简明的设计突出书中的内容。

书本在色彩选用方面让人联想到庙

宇的外观 , 象征着中华文化的意涵。红

绿相间的封面 , 以及内页的亮黄纸张 ,

这些颜色都寓意丰富。另外 , 照片的编

排也富有巧思 , 让读者在浏览照片时 ,

时而聚焦细节 , 时而带动视线 , 引人注

意其他大型图片 , 一幅幅的影像仿佛流

动起来。换句话说 , 此书的设计不仅能

凸显图文蕴含的概念 , 也可以引领读者

走入庙中 , 营造身临其境的体验。

当然 , 没有一本书能取代亲历经

验。同样的 , 书中的图文即使再详尽 ,

也无法巨细靡遗地记录如此庞杂的修复

项目。这种种的局限来自于对理想的追

求 , 尤其是在古迹的修复和保护方面 ,

更容易产生矛盾冲突 , 书中有关庙宇的

工程制图和平面图 , 最能体现其中的矛

盾。这些制图让我们清楚地了解庙宇的

规格、建筑特征的实际名称 , 以及庙宇

的空间布局。虽然有了这些具体的标签

和数字 , 但它们只能代表理想中的建筑

原型 , 而无法全然恢复古迹真实原貌。

同样的 , 我们永远无法还原历史 ,

这或许是为什么这本新书从档案照片开

始追述切入的原因。这些档案照片重构

了另一时空的庙宇 , 一个我们无法返回

的时空。之前的五个提问不仅是身为古

迹修复者所关切的实际问题 , 也隐约地

凸显修复工作在理想与现实之间的矛盾

与冲突。

这本新书的副标题为 “ 建筑与历史

的对话 ”, 暗喻着文化遗产与历史之间

存在的微妙关系。若是缺乏积极的互动

交流 , 现代人会认为文化遗产课题沉闷

无趣 ; 若是少了修复工作 , 我们的文物

古迹将失去生机而逐渐损毁。城市风貌

不断改变 , 其中蕴含的文化也在持续演

变。古建筑保存了部分的历史 , 但也让

我们与文化产生互动。从这个角度而

言 , 此书的出版也是文化遗产保护工作

的一部分 , 前卫的概念 , 策划的用心 ,

在在说明它不仅是一项修复工程的简单

记录而已。

文化遗产保护工作不但是为了实

现 “ 整旧如旧 ” 的理想 , 也须为文物古

迹保有生生不息的活力。我们可以运用

知识、手艺以及艺术手段 , 将建筑或文

物进行修复、保护 , 进而赋予它们现代

的意义。每一项修复工程都需要大量的

钻研探究、田野调查、高超技术 , 以及

不少的人力和时间。文物古迹的保护工

作可理解为保存和修复工程 , 然而这样

的诠释却掩盖了它更重要的意义 : 将落

伍、陈旧的部分进行汰变 , 从而与当代

生活接轨。书中有一小章节提及在古庙

里安装现代化的灯饰以加强照明 , 足以

阐明这一观点。这些点子即为文物古迹

注入鲜活的生命力。

每本书皆可视为沟通的工具 , 主要

的目的在于加强 “ 连结 ”。杨茳善的著

作凸显了这一功能。前卫美观的版面设

计、清晰简明的呈现方式 , 以及精心铺

陈的编排手法提高了此书的可读性 ; 作

者利用现代元素推介文化与人文遗产的

概念 , 拉近与读者的距离。就如庙宇的

修复和保护工作让百年古庙在现世变得

焕然一新 , 此书也延续了这份理念 , 引

发读者重新思考有关历史、文化和记忆

的课题。

《粤海清庙 : 建筑与历史的对话》

促成了读者与历史、中华文化展开一段

深切的对话 , 如同工匠和顾问在进行

修复工程的情况。此书不但记录了百

年古刹的修复过程 , 也强调文物古迹

保护工作的重要性 , 在这瞬息万变的时

代为我们的文化遗产赋予了珍贵的价

值与意义。或许更重要的是 , 本书的出

版为 “ 过去 ” 与 “ 现在 ” 搭建沟通的

桥梁 , 让我们认清历史资料以外的追溯

意义 , 以及找到与历史文化 “ 对话 ” 的

起点。


对话的起点

既然古迹的修复和保护工作无法将建筑

还原至最理想的状态 , 那它们的意义又

何在 ?

以此书为例 , 我们发现工匠的修复

理念与建庙者的建筑理念是相通的。换

言之 , 我们找到了与先辈一脉相承的纽

带 , 这从文物与建筑中能够得到验证。

书中介绍的雕工壁画反映潮汕特有的艺

术和手艺 , 其中也简述了历史上中华文

化漆艺的发展。更具体而言 , 每一个支

架、每一根柱子、每一块瓷砖 , 都让人

窥见历史留下的印记。

人生四季的省悟

蒋勋徐徐游走于自然天地间 , 每天最重

要的活动即是认真生活 , 在四季的更替

推移中照见富饶丰美的精神家园。所

谓 “ 气变知时易 ”, 与乡村农事如此亲

近 , 作者对春夏秋冬的感知更为敏锐 ,

意识到生命的历程亦如四季之分。只要

尊崇自然秩序生活 , 向大自然谦逊学

习 , 无论是风霜雨雪、春华秋实 , 都能

以安适豁达的心态泰然处之。

美好的春天向大地准时报到 , 作者

以平静的心情迎接首发的春汛 :“ 我喜

欢惊蛰前后北国的春天 , 寒凉里流着

一丝丝春天慢慢到来的安静 , 不热闹缤

纷 , 不张扬夸大 …… 醒来之后知道这

身体只是来作客 , 迟早要走 , 因此爱恨

也只是自己妄想。” 春暖花开的旖旎季

节 , 虽然令人万分期待 , 但也无须过分

执着 , 毕竟花开花落终有时 , 除了满怀

等待的欣喜之外 , 也应该 “ 学习聆听更

多生命的对话 ”。

面对嬗递的自然时序 , 作者以隐忍

的耐心、持稳的态度静观 :“ 清明时

节 , 许多树木经已开花 , 但凤凰木却要

等到夏季 , 才开出火焰般的凤凰花 ……

我们有时会忽略没有开花的树 , 花期还

没有到 , 看到别的花灿烂夺目 , 可以不

焦虑 , 不着急 , 安安静静 , 沉稳内敛 ,

储蓄自己的生命能量。” 每种植物有其

特性 , 开花的周期也不一样 , 各有各的

宿运 , 因此不必急于争先 , 蒋勋的这份

细微观察也适用于人世 , 富有启迪心灵

的睿智。

步入夏天 , 作者感受到了这个季节

的丰盛与野艳 , 但在生命最炽热、外炫

的阶段 , 他不忘自省 :“ 我喜欢 ‘ 小

满 ’ 这两个字 , 很喜悦 , 很自信 , 却也

很谦逊 , 很谨慎 , 对自己的存在很满

足 , 却没有嚣张喧哗。” 盛夏的美 , 可

以很张扬外露 , 也可以很单纯静好 ,

如 “ 一盆色彩丰富的夏堇 ”、“ 一朵牵

牛花的蓓蕾 ”, 对蒋勋而言 ,“ 美 , 或

许不是一种知识 ”, 而是如宋代程颢

所谓 “ 万物静观皆自得 , 四时佳兴与人

同 ” 的悠然心境。

秋分时节 , 树木的叶子开始变色凋

落 , 枫叶由绿转红 , 生命的 “ 气数 ” 逐

渐变化 , 仿佛清晨的寒露 , 将逝未逝 ,

引起作者的感慨 :“ 原来生命如此 , 上

善若水 , 没有执着 , 应无所住 ……”

面对满地坠落的栗子、树叶的凋落飘

零 , 赏看桂花最美的身影、饱满的累累

柿子 , 秋天 , 讲述的是欢聚与告别的故

事。蒋勋似乎想留住什么 , 却也明了留

不住什么 , 唯有顺应自然兴衰之道 , 在

转瞬人间捕捉一份自在喜悦。

冬天带来的是严寒的艰巨挑战 , 但

作者深谙 “ 寒冷 , 使生命严峻、坚毅、

冷静 ” 的道理 , 看似矛盾的辩证。他

对近年来气候的异常现象愈发敏感 :

“ 气候变迁了 , 都市杀死了节气 , 这几

年 ,‘ 小雪 ’、‘ 大雪 ’ 常常连树叶都不

变色。” 人类为了满足更多物质上的欲

望 , 违背了自然生态的法则 , 造成气候

“ 原来生命如此 , 上善若水 , 没有执着 , 应无所住 ……”

出现异常变化。“ 冬暖夏凉 ” 的天气 ,

到底是福是祸 ? 面对万物沉睡的寒冬 ,

作者不禁叩问 : 冬天赋予人的意义 , 是

否就是为了 “ 等待 ”?

感受人世的温度

对于岁月流年的无情消逝 , 蒋勋以美

学的角度提出另一番灼识 :“ 也许 ,

时间才是真正的雕刻家吧 , 它用残

酷荒谬的 ‘ 毁坏 ’ 成就了真正永恒

的 ‘ 完美 ’。” 时间即是无限的 , 却又

有限 , 如张若虚所谓 “ 人生代代无穷

已 , 江月年年只相似 ”, 人类代代即是

以有限去追逐无限 , 在这不断更替、

循环往复的过程中 , 潮起潮落 , 成住

坏空 ,“ 活在当下 ” 即是肉身至关重要

的人生修行。然而 , 蒋勋并非冷眼旁观

人生 , 或选择置身 “ 世 ” 外 , 而是在

无常的变化中用心动情 , 去感受人世的

温度。

蒋勋数度回返法国巴黎 , 与年轻

的自己重逢 , 那里有他想念的建筑、

绘画、书店、繁华、幽静 , 还有青春。

在巴黎 , 他特别喜欢一方 “ 幽寂安静柱

廊的角落 ”, 时有音乐人兀自弹奏乐

器 , 自娱娱人 , 各取所需。蒋勋对这个

不起眼的角落如此看重 , 因为 “ 可以懂

得不打扰人 , 也可以懂得不被人打扰 ,

一个城市才开始有了可以传续的美与文

明吧 ”。

个体对生命四季的哲思 , 总是无可

避免地会碰触生死大限的课题。蒋勋在

海牙的美术馆欣赏荷兰画家林布兰著名

的油画《杜尔普医生的解剖课》, 巧遇

一位牵着导盲犬的视障人士 , 身旁有

一位女士正为他轻声导览。访客面前的

这幅旷世之作似乎揭示了另一层深刻的
