The Futureof FoodChanginglives one cropat a time.FREDANDO JACKSON IS ON A MISSION—a get-down-on-your-knees-and-dig-in-thedirtkind of mission—to bring fresh foodto people without access to it. In turn he’sbringing customers to small SouthwestGeorgia farmers who have been shut out ofthe commercial market.In the process “Farmer Fredo” and hispartners are also teaching people to growtheir own food, cook it and obtain freshfood to supplement their homegrown crops.Through a network of gardens at churches,community centers and schools as well ascooking classes through the CooperativeExtension Service and tasting sessions withstudents and parents, Flint River Fresh—asubsidiary of the state Department ofAgriculture’s “Georgia Grown” program—ischanging lives.to garden. And you’d be amazed: Some ofthese young people have never been taughthow to use a knife, because they’ve neverwatched anyone cook.”The project’s origins lay in a desire to liftpeople on the south side of Albany, Georgia,above poverty and eliminate food deserts inthat city, but its successes have been built onstrong leadership, community resilience and ashared commitment to a better life for all.“Back in the 1940s, before refrigerated tractortrailerswere running up and down the road,everyone had a vegetable garden in the yard,”Jackson says. “Now people have forgotten how65
