The power
OF SECRETS
DO YOU KEEP SECRETS? I KNOW I DO.
My whole life is littered with the things, like letters gathered
in an old shoe box stashed in the cellar. They wouldn’t be
shocking if Ishared themwith you here. For secrets only
ever feel truly momentous to those who keep them. I have
held secret failures, secret fears, secret crushes and secret
grudges throughout my entire life, each one strapped
tightly tomy chest.
I expect you have, too. Because secrets are what make
usfundamentally human. To not have any secrets at
allwould, Isuspect, make you a far less-interesting person.
But we are careful with our secrets. We must be; for they
hold such power. We understand this from the moment we
are old enough to articulate our deepest, most clandestine
thoughts and feelings. It is why diaries are a young person’s
best friend. And therapists never go out of fashion. And
yet… there issomethingwithin usthat is compelled to
share themwith others. Perhaps it’s that frisson of danger,
knowing as we do that a secret shared is, at the same time,
control relinquished. When you share your most private
thoughts with a close friend or colleague, you are – in
essence – trusting them with a trembling piece of yourself.
It is trading catharsis for power. Yet secrets shared, when
not in the name of idle gossip, can be hugely therapeutic.
To know that another person keeps the same hidden beliefs
or behaviours as you can be deliciously reassuring. Which
is why we have launched a newseries called The Secret
Lives of Women – several stories of which are in this issue,
from page 84. (Find more at Style.com/vn.) Free to roam
under the cloak of anonymity, each woman has bared her
soul, not with shame or trepidation, but with feeling, gusto
and pride. Speaking of secrets, this month we also launch
a new segment – STYLE Spotlight on page 48 – where we
highlight fashion’s under-the-radar names and faces, all of
whom we think you should know about before everyone
else. Here at STYLE , we have always placed a huge amount
of importance on championing designers who – particularly
at the beginning of their careers – need the support of
editors and consumers to be able to go on creating. We hope
you fall for themasmuch as we have. Enjoy the issue…

FALL IS COMMING
A virtual New York Fashion Week marks the beginning of
another fashion month. Even though the shows look a little different this
year, there’s still joy to be found in the sartorial season. For one, breaking
out your favorite fall sweaters or boots begins the wardrobe shift from
summer. But there are many ways to feel inspired when it comes to getting
dressed this fall, whether it’s taking cues from celebrity style, a movie,
or a show you’ve watched during quarantine, or simply leaning into the fall
2020 fashion trends we saw on the runways earlier this year.

EMMA
“Handsome, clever and rich” is how Emma’s tagline
describes its matchmaking heroine (Anya Taylor-Joy),
but it’s also an apt summation of director Autumn de
Wilde’s Jane Austen adaptation, which is energized by
meticulous style, spirited wit and passionate emotions.
Hewing closely to its source material, the film
charts Emma Woodhouse’s efforts to find a suitor
for her doting companion Harriet Smith (Mia Goth)
while struggling with her own blossoming feelings for
her sister’s brother-in-law, George Knightley (Johnny
Flynn). Round and round the romantic entanglements
go, not only for these three characters but a host of
others that de Wilde and screenwriter Eleanor Catton
faithfully delineate in clean, bright brushstrokes.
Its studied imagery suggesting a daintier variation on
Wes Anderson’s trademark visuals, Emma boasts an
aesthetic confidence that’s matched by its performers.
At the head of that impressive pack (which also
includes Bill Nighy) is Taylor-Joy, whose Emma exudes
just the right amount of playful cockiness and ambition
– qualities ultimately undercut by her realization
that no amount of manipulations can change what the
heart wants.

Aboulouafa started writing

At the center is a great

nice video about two friends

TATE MODERN It’s direct, obvious, approachable
art, so it’s a shame the wall
texts take it all so glumly seriously. Because
despite the awkward, uncomfortable,
terrifying feeling of Nauman’s art,
there’s something quite reassuring about
it all. It’s so easy to feel like 2020, with its
isolation and boredom and creeping authoritarianism,
is an outlier. But Nauman’s
art is saying don’t worry, life has always
been this absurd, and it always will be.

J.M.W. TURNER is now one of the most
famous and well-established painters to
have ever come out of Britain. Which
can make it hard to appreciate just what
a radical Turner was during his lifetime.
His loose, loose and looser-still approach
to landscape painting repeatedly
shocked the painterly establishment, but
it wasn’t just his artistic style that was innovative.
Turner was fascinated by the
new inventions of the Industrial Revolution,
as captured in the 100% glorious
‘Rail, Steam and Speed’. And - guess
42
what? - you can see it irl in this show!!
Which basically justifies the price of an
entry ticket on its own accord. Only this
being Turner, you’re also guaranteed a
whole heap of other genius works too.

love a bit of Turner painting a train?

TANTRA The British Museum’s major
exhibition for spring 2020 is devoted to
the Tantras, sacred Indian texts from the
6th century that shaped the meditational
and devotional practices of Tantric Hinduism
and Buddhism. Since their dispersion,
Tantric writings have had a dramatic
impact on the major religions of South
Asia, even inspiring revolutions. They
continue to inform the philosophies and
practices of people today, having been
reimagined as a means of breaking convention.
This exhibition will include over
100 objects, including sculptures, art installations
and manuscripts.

YVES SAINT LAURENT
In Jalil Lespert's Yves Saint Laurent, we find a retracing of the
life of one of the biggest names in French couture, where the
personal and professional often intersect. From his lead position
at Dior in 1957 to the creation of his own fashion house in
1961, including his relationship with Pierre Bergé, the film makes
an attempt at embodying the complex creativity of the French
couturier. Featuring his inspirations, failed attempts, and the infamous
Russian Ballet 1976 collection, the film touches on all facets.
Pierre Niney triumphed in his role as Yves Saint Laurent, earning
the César award for the Best Actor, surpassing Gaspard Ulliel,
who played the same role in Bertrand Bonello's Saint Laurent
that same year.

The bridal market is booming, and it seems ready-towear
designers are getting in on the action. Woe is the
fashion bride who comes to face with a sea of strapless
faille without a bias-cut or statement-making bodice
among them—but no longer. In the hands of Brandon
Maxwell, with a sleek two-piece bandeau number; Tom
Ford, with a one-shoulder body-hugging lace gown; and
Khaite, with a cutout, long-sleeve statement dress with
an open back, among many other standouts, almost all
fashion girl bridal problems are solved.

It can sometimes seem that we’ve been living in the era
of minimal neutrals. Track the amount of beige Instagrams
with 200K-plus followers for proof. But perhaps
maximalism isn’t dead if all the kira kira-level sparkles
coming down the fall runways are any indication. Morphing
into a human disco ball is the number one cure
for situational sadness, according to experts. Marc

Big Fur Energy
The bigger the fur, the closer to God? We don’t think that’s
how it goes, but maybe there’s some truth there. With our
unpredictable weather patterns, we have no way of knowing if
next season’s fall and winter will be all sunshine and heat spikes
or blizzards and polar vortexes. But if it’s the latter, we’ll be well
prepped in some seriously statement-making furs. Designers
got creative with what they’re spinning them out of—be it knits
that appear like furs, real fur that’s sustainable, or the latest in
faux inventions—but we’re ready to make an entrance in the
likes of Celine, Miu Miu, and red Saint Laurent.

It seems so trite to proclaim that black is back. Let’s be honest, New
York’s favorite hue has never truly fallen out of favor. It is being elevated
to first look out status for the first season in many though, and
it’s doing so with a definite degree of capital-D drama. That giant
face-obscuring hat at Givenchy, the sweeping ruffled collar at Schiaparelli,
that neckline with that veil at Herrera, not to mention Oscar
de la Renta’s tulle bodice—we don’t know whether she’s the merry
widow holding onto all her cash in style or the ultimate “showing up

Red Dress Diaries
Not since the heyday of Valentino red in the ’90s has the color
felt more relevant. Of course, Pierpaolo Piccioli gave us his take
on the brand’s signature shade on a stunning, glimmering red
turtleneck gown. Rodarte went sheer and French dotted, and
Bottega Veneta gave us the perfect louche evening gown, while
Balenciaga’s super-form-fitting red dress-pant combo was somewhere
between Madame Grés and an especially fierce ballerina.
In other words, there are many ways to get in on the red dress

Flesh Tones
From a leather biker jacket and pleated skirt in caramel at Fendi to
a long-sleeve column dress in beige sequins at Bottega Veneta to a
chocolate-brown vinyl bodysuit at Balmain, designers gave a whole
new meaning to going nude for the fall 2020 season. Let’s call this the
Fenty Beauty effect, which casts a wide net, offering every beautiful
shade of every beautiful person. The runways showcased a range
of complexions that—and here’s the real clincher—covered up the
body. They gave the illusion of flesh without actually showing it, communicating
that, at least in this instance, fashion is really skin deep.

Such a Tassel
There’s no denying that wearing fringe is tricky. With ample
amounts of loose-hanging tufts moving and flowing in every direction,
it is not the best option to wear from nine-to-five—hence
why it is often relegated to glitzy soirées and costume parties. Designers
this season, however, took the hassle out of the tassel. For
example, Bottega Veneta created chucky cords at the end of teddy
coats, Etro and Zimmermann placed them on elegant ponchos,
Gabriela Hearst lined them on suede trenches, and Paco Rabanne
fastened them to modest wool dresses. Of course, there were
titillating offerings at Christian Dior and Area (a fashion season
wouldn’t be complete without them), but the overall message was
that all could benefit from fringe throughout the day.

Strength in Arms
Pronounced shoulders convey fortitude, control, and chutzpah.
But for the fall 2020 season, romance was added into
the mix, and this primarily came in the form of mutton
sleeves. Also known as the gigot sleeve, the style delineates
voluminous shoulders that taper down the arm. It is typified
by queens of England, Disney princess, real-life princesses
(à la Princess Diana’s wedding dress), Gibson Girls, society
swans in the ’30s, and the oeuvre of Christian Lacroix. All
this speaks to a bygone era, when glamour and fantasy were
the crux of the fashion industry. The modern-day versions,
though, are sleeker and more structured (ribbed sweaters at
Isabel Marant, camel dresses at Balmain, shimmering blouses
at Christopher John Rogers, and tweed jackets at Chanel),
but imbue a wistful vibe nonetheless.

Plaid About It
It’s a mad, mad world, and a great way to overcome it is with
plaid. The exuberant pattern has long been part of fashion’s
vernacular, seeing itself in varying degrees on the runways season
after season—especially at Burberry, its grandest proponent.
But for fall 2020, other labels took the ubiquitous motif for a
spin, casting it onto pieces that exemplify each of their aesthetics.
Marine Serre featured it on framed double-breasted coats
over a bodysuit, Celine had it on cool capes, Maison Margiela
added a woolly lining, Proenza Schouler went for edgy peacoats,
Chloé stuck to the ’70s, and Victoria Beckham opted for sleek
day dresses covered in the print. There is dynamism attached
to wearing plaid that isn’t as flamboyant as other prints. And in
troublesome times, we could use some of that energy.

All the Trimmings
Fashion loves to revisit prevalent styles from the past and make
them new—and fall 2020 was no different. Case in point: Many
designers presented a certain type of coat that harks to the ‘70s,
a decade that was on the cusp of bohemia, entering glam rock,
and all about disco. Indeed, all these characteristics exemplified
the chic topper at the presentations of Louis Vuitton, Balenciaga,
A.W.A.K.E. Mode, Saint Laurent, and Marc Jacobs. They all showed
overcoats with long, sleek silhouettes that were punctuated with
oversized collars made of fur or shearling. Still, each stamped their
signature to the groovy style, giving their designs a modern-day lift
with interesting fabric choices and colors.

And spring is ...COMMING
We will never shake the ‘back to school’ feeling when January hits, will we? (Who doesn’t love investing in
a new pencil case – or, ahem, bag – and blazer?) We’re not the only ones, clearly, as SS21 runways were
packed with riffs on school uniforms. At Prada, models wore ties in a pick ’n’ mix assortment of blue, red,
yellow and pink; Rokh did Hogwarts-gone-high-fashion; and Dior featured modern-day Blair Waldorfs in
strong monochrome looks with silk hairbands. It’s time to go back to school.
