With our first issue

launched, the pressure

was on to create a

better issue each time after the

next. Even though some mistakes

were still made, we decided to

focus on the future issues and

improving and perfecting our

magazine than beating ourselves

up.

We can admit our mistakes,

and with this we can laugh it off

and continue to work and grow

towards an almost perfect future.

We would also just like to thank every

single one of our readers for taking the time to read our magazine

and for those who gave us feedback. Negative or positive, we

used the feedback to fuel our engines and needless to say, we are

fullspeed ahead and ready for anything.

Even though only a month has passed since our first issue, so

much has changed, staff has rotated, doors have opened to new

and exciting opportunities, and we’ve been able to allow more

people the opportunity to feature in our magazine.

We’ve been hussling and bustling and this is only the

beginning.

So welcome; to the next issue of Olympia Magazine.

From finding her passion in a simple Office program, to building a business single-handedly

during a global pandemic.

Shan-Marie is twenty two

years old, born and raised

in Nelspruit.

From PowerPoint to

Adobe Illustrator

When she was given a task to

create a PowerPoint in primary

school her passion for design was

ignited. She had an undoubtable pull

to design which nothing else matched.

Throughout her primary school and high

school years she never had a doubt in

her mind that design is what she wanted

to study after school.

She graduated and studied at Unigrad

College in Nelspruit. She found

that Unigrad was highly beneficial

and overall found that her journey

through college was really fun. The

competitive nature and camaraderie of

the students helped Shan-Marie grow

as designer. Although the critique was

tough being constantly pushed by her

peers and mentors drove her to create

better art. She really enjoyed learning

about Computer Application and found

BACK TO INDEX

that her Entrepreneurship class as well as

her previous job experience helped her

gain a lot of confidence in creating her own

business. She truly believes that you are

never too young to start a business.

Shan-Marie started Juniper Graphic Design

in the middle of June. She had the idea to

start Juniper Graphic Design for quite a

while, but the push from COVID-19 was

all she needed to get started in creating

her own business. Shan-Marie said that she

was very lucky to have many friends and

family members offering their support in

the launch of Juniper Graphic Design. She

feels excited by the challenges in which new

clients will bring, she loves to push herself

to create the best design for the client.

For Shan-Marie it is not about the money,

it is more about her passion for design, she

is more focused on creating artworks that

the client can be proud of as well as herself.

She aims to create a well-established, wellknown

business that people recognize and

know that they can come to for high quality

designs. She also stated that she would

rather have partnerships than be a boss

because she believes that working as equals

alongside one another will help cultivate a

healthy and efficient work environment.

When asked everyone’s favourite question,

where do you see yourself in five years?

She told us she wants to build an office

with the best equipment possible so that

she can put out as high quality designs as

possible. She hopes to help young students

who are passionate about design and have

been placed at a disadvantage pursue their

dreams.

Overall Shan-Marie has an overwhelming

love for what she does and strives to be the

best designer she can be.

The Butterfly Effect

The Butterfly Effect was something

I always use to notice whilst going

about my day. When you become

aware of how the small things you do can

inadvertently have a large impact on your

day or someone else’s day you start to live

a very conscious life. My understanding of

the Butterfly Effect used to be very surface

level but when I started to research it for

this article I began to realize it was a lot

more intricate and complex than I had

originally thought.

You see, what I understood was merely

from the common phrase “ A butterfly

flapping its wings can cause a hurricane.”,

what I didn’t know was that the Butterfly

Effect came from the Chaos Theory which

is a branch of mathematics that focuses

on the study of chaos. Because this is a

mathematical theory, it hurts your brain to

try and wrap your head around it and the

excessive amount of complex terminology

does not help one bit.

However, in Chaos Theory the butterfly

effect is the sensitive dependence on initial

conditions in which a small change in one

state of a deterministic nonlinear system

can result in large differences in a later

state.

The sentence took me a worrying amount

of time to decipher but essentially what it

means is that the Butterfly Effect highly

depends on the time in which a small

change takes place in a system which is

predictable, yet random which causes large

changes in the future.

For example, planting a tree would be a

deterministic nonlinear system because we

By QT

think we know what will happen when we

plant a tree, but there are all these random

variables which if they were to happen at a

certain time would alter the predicted end

result of the tree. So there you go, now you

can sound pretentious while explaining the

Butterfly Effect to one of your friends or

colleagues.

I think once we learn to understand that

we are a variable in the end result of the

world or the result of how someone feels

at the end of their day we can then become

more aware of how we treat others as well

as our beautiful planet. Don’t go driving

yourself crazy thinking that you might

accidentally cause the apocalypse, not

saying it’s impossible but I don’t think

it’s something you should worry about. I

find a strange comfort knowing that all

my small actions do have an effect on my

future. For me at least, it reinforces the

feeling that everything happens for a reason

through some crazy

culmination of

mine and others’

actions and

where I am,

is where I am

supposed to be.

Izaan Theron has a beautiful eye for visual imagery. At the age of

eighteen she’s already captured the most astounding images I have ever

seen. She mainly specializes in capturing landscape, action, and portrait

photography.

“Some of my favorite photographers are Conner Franta and Will

Darbyshire.” She claims. It was clear from that moment on after seeing

their work that she knew that that was what she wanted to do. Their art,

she feels has been wildly inspiring to her.

The Beauty Behind Photography

Depending on the subject of the photograph, determines on the

mood felt by her. An example said by her is that when she captures in

landscape, it gives her an emotion of peace and calmness and when she

captures macro photo’s it shows her how truly beautiful things are.

She of course definitely would love for photography to be a part of

her life. Although, she wouldn’t see it as being her career, but more a

hobby.

Izaan is absolutely brilliant in how she captures the world as she creates

an imaginative beauty in just one photograph. With that being said,

it’s the beautiful moments that surround us which motivate her

to photograph the world around us. She mainly finds

solace in capturing nature. She finds it to be

scary that if she doesn’t, she may never

experience such a beautiful moment

in her life ever again. And with the

beauty she has created, she feels

it important for everyone to

see it too. She feels that her

experiences in the beauty

of photography should be

experienced by everyone else

as well.

“...My paintings are concerned with

psychological nuance, atmosphere,

ambiguity and the impulses of human

nature.”.

Kate Gottgens

Kate Gottgens was born in Durban, South Africa, 1965. She studied

at Michaelis School of Fine Art. I was very interested to know if she felt

Michaelis to be hindering her creativity. She responded saying “Michaelis

offered a good foundation in cultivating a consistent studio practice. There

was freedom to explore one’s ideas while also receiving critical feedback,

but most importantly it connected me to fellow students who became peers

with whom to exhibit and collaborate.”

She always felt drawn to creating art, even taking it as a subject in matric

but it was not until a trip abroad when she saw the works of the 20th

century giants that she decided she wanted to study art. Most of her

artworks include a human figure or something that resembled one, I was

curious to know why; she responded saying , “I have occasionally made

entirely abstract works that I think have meaning and complexity but I rely

quite heavily on the human figure to create narrative, scale, perspective

and to communicate to the viewer something relatable. My paintings are

concerned with psychological nuance, atmosphere, ambiguity and the

impulses of human nature.”.

Although she said that she has pieces she definitely prefers over others; she said it’s

the case of engagement with the piece; “The work in progress in the studio is the

connection point, the favourite you are trying to beat into shape.”. I wanted to gain

insight into Gottgens process, she explained that it normally starts with an image, it

is not so much as much thinking as it is responding and exploring what is possible to

create to do with the image in paint.

We all experience moments where our creativity seems to elude us, Kate offered us

her advice on what she does when she gets into a slump, do research into your field,

read literature, gather images and cleaning your space is a really good way to reset

your mind.

Lastly I asked her what advice she would offer to young artists, she kindly said,

“Commitment and grit. Keep your studio practice going. Don’t give up. Sometimes

there are years of inaction or seeming invisibility, but make sure you stay believing

in yourself, you’re unique and original voice. It’s the hours you put in, it’s not all

inspiration and talent.”

OOPS! We made a f*ck up!

In our first issue we noticed that we had a few grammar and spelling errors, as embarrassing

as this is, we chose to rise from the ashes and admit our mistake. Take a look at these four

software solutions to spelling and grammar errors, so that don’t make the same mistakes we

did.

As creatives we are not as perfect as many people

think; we all are just human. In our first issue there

were some grammar errors that our team missed.

Thank you to those of you who brought it to our

attention, we really appreciate it.

We have implemented a new system on ensuring that

this does not happen again. We as Olympia Magazine

accept out f*ckups, as we are creatives that can admit

our mistakes.

Part of this article we would like to share apps that

help you to improve and ensures that you have correct

spelling and grammar. Let’s dive in to these apps that

makes life easier for us.

ProWritingAid

price plan is divided into three categories – free,

Premium and Premium Plus. This can range from $20

per month to $399 for a lifetime subscription.

Grammarly

Grammarly is one of the most wellknown

grammar apps out there.

They call themselves a writing

assistant. I have used them a few

times for college essays, they

truly live up to their self-named

status as a dependable writing

assistant. The app is very friendly to

use and easy to use. They autodetect spelling and

your grammar. They do give suggestion on grammar,

spelling, punctuation and style changes in real-time.

ProWritingAid is a grammar checker

and style editor for content creators

and writers. It helps you to quickly

edit your grammar and punctuation,

removes errors and improve your

word choice. ProWritingAid also

gives you a detail report on how you

improved your writing skills.

They only have two pricing plans – free and premium.

The free version covers your basic grammar, spelling

and punctuation with a fun tone detector feature.

The Premium start off at $11.66 per month (1-year

plan billed as one payment of $139.95) or $19.98

per month (quarterly plan billed as one payment of

$59.95).

ProWritingAid is intergraded with Google Docs,

Microsoft Office and most web browsers. A Desktop

app is available for both Windows or Mac users. Their

WhiteSmoke

WhiteSmoke is a grammar and

proofreading software that

corrects not only simple spelling

mistakes, but everything under the

sun of writing.

WhiteSmoke also has a translator and

dictionary for more than 50 languages, over 100

built-in templates, as well as video tutorials, error

explanations, and a plagiarism checker. Its products

are based on NLP (Natural Language Processing)

technology, featuring unique algorithms and AI for

text analysis. The tool offers a mobile app for Android

and iOS and also works with Windows, Mac OS, and

all web browsers.

Unfortunately, they don’t have a free version, only

paid-for version. They have a web plan that starts from

$3.47 to $5 per month. On this plan you can only

use it on the web interface. The premium plan starts

from $5.55 to $6.66 per month, this will include

integration with Google, Microsoft Office and a

desktop app.

Ginger

Ginger Software is a grammar

and spelling checking system

that helps people to write

faster and better. Like the above

mentioned app this app offers

additional features including text

reader, sentence rephrase, dictionary, a translator

with over 50 languages, and a personal trainer feature

to improve your English.

Ginger can be downloaded on your Safari or Chrome

browser and it works on Microsoft Office. It doesn’t

stop there, they have a desktop app that can be

installed on both Windows and Mac or on your

Android or iOS.

They have a free plan and a premium plan. The

premium start from $6,66 to $30,97 per month. The

premium plan offers more than 50 language, text

reader, sentence rephases and more.

Western Marriage is a Strange Cocept

Personally marriage is something that has

never appealed to me; not to say I do

not want to be with one person for the

rest of my life. I just feel as if marriage loses

its meaning when you have to declare it to a

third party; so they can make it official.

One’s declaration of love should be the

choice to stay whilst still having the options

to walk away.

The one thing that does entice me to get

legally married is all the monetary values

the government as well as its respectable

successors offer. For example cheaper

insurance and many tax laws that lean in

favour of married couples.

So now you may be asking why I feel the

need to accuse western marriage of being a

“strange concept.”

Throughout my life; I’ve only ever seen

marriage as something that keeps people

together because leaving seems too strenuous

and expensive. Leaving is never going to

be easy no matter the circumstances but

a divorce it seems, is a lot harder than a

breakup.

Or maybe it’s the romantic in me, the belief

that true love is something that only needs to

be declared through one’s words and one’s

actions not signed into legality.

However the romantic in me has always been

a little ignorant and it is hard to ignore, even

though it pains me to admit, the monetary

values are highly beneficial and I cannot deny

that money runs the world.

Love is something that we seem to think we

understand; that there’s a blueprint for love.

It is the same with marriage. At the end of the

day you define how important marriage is to

you and how much importance it holds in the

truth of your love. If you want to get married

for monetary benefits, get married for

monetary benefits! If you want to get married

because you like signing legal documents,

get married because you like signing legal

documents! If you don’t want to get married

because you think it has no value, don’t get

married!

What I’m trying to say is that a marriage

should be because it’s a decision between two

people, not because it’s a reaction on societal

and traditional pressure. Get married because

you want to, besides nothing stops you from

having a wedding without the contract!

Time to Go For a Drive

By Ross Savory

Down the Mountain & back up again

If you are a citizen of Nelspruit, you know exactly just why

Kaapschehoop is such a great place to be in. but, for those

outsiders, here is a good reason why you should consider

going to this small town.

First of all, just by being in this place makes you feel

comfortable and rested. The mere sight of this place sets you

in the mind set of peace and tranquility. If it’s a sunny day or

even a rainy, gloomy day, you can never feel unsettled in this

place.

Driving to Kaapschehoop gets you exited for the rest.

You drive on a twisty road surrounded by mountains and

beautiful nature. Getting close to town you see horses on

the side of the road just minding their own business, so just

watch out for them. Arriving at the town, on the side of the

road you will see a road sign to be aware of surrounding

animals, but on the road sign is not your ordinary animal, it

depicts a faery and that just automatically tells you what you

are going to find here.

You will find the town on your left, but I would recommend

stopping on the right side of the road

first and you have to trust me on

this. what the eye can see

on the right side of the

road is a cemetery

containing the

deceased who

lived there

before, but

if you look

closer you

will find a

footpath

heading

to the left

towards a

cliff. You

want to

follow this

road. I have to

admit it is kind

of a difficult path

so I’d recommend packing in your walking shoes. Well, you

are going to need them regardless. This path will get long,

but don’t worry, it is all going to make sense in a minute or

twenty.

At the end of this path you will be greeted with the most

magical phenomena on this planet. A waterfall. This is not

just your regular waterfall, oh no, this is waterfall right in

the crack of a mountain and it serves a marvelous scene.

Surrounded by rocks, the sound of the waters crashing

and just the feeling of the mist cooling you down. This is a

place to chill with friends or even if you are alone and in the

meditation mood. You will not be disappointed.

When you are don with the waterfall you can now head back

up that difficult road and now you can actually head to the

town. But the fun does not stop there. You get into town and

it is filled with kind people and dogs, a lot of dogs. There

are a lot of restaurant where you can sit down and just have a

nice cold drink after hiking what feels like a mountain, well…

it was. After the drink and maybe a snack or five courses, you

walk around the rest of the town. No cars are needed, you

can leave it at the towns entrance, it will be safe. Amazing

antique shops are available and I insist you go check them

out.

You walk further and surprise, another trail that I am going

to insist you take. And this one is going to be worth the

while because you are going to work out those calves and

end up at the edge of the mountain. Don’t worry, its safe.

A breathtaking view that cannot be missed. You can see

everything up there and the weather definitely is different

up there. The wind, the trees, everything is just so magical

about that spot

if you think that what I am writing does not make sense and

I’m exaggerating a bit. Well, you might be right on both of

those things, but go check it out for yourself, you will not be

disappointed.

Do you miss me?

Do I cross your mind for a brief second?

Just a moment,

a quick ripple in the ocean that is your

thoughts.

Do you think of me,

just a glimpse and then forget?

Do you remember me when you

experience a certain moment?

Do you dream of me?

Do I cross your mind at all, as you

cross mine?

Or do you feel at ease now that I’m

gone?

I guess you do, I guess you don’t miss

me,

I guess I can’t expect you to.

I was awful at the time,

I would’ve hated me.

I did hate me.

I do hate me.

See, because of my own recklessness,

because of my own darkness,

I ruined you.

I broke you into a million pieces

and scattered them in the sea,

So that they’d be lost.

I guess I did it because I wanted you to

feel what I was feeling...

And I couldn’t explain with words,

So I had to attack you.

As a cry for help I wanted to show you

how I was destroying myself,

so I destroyed you,

in the hopes that you’d have the

strength to rebuild us both.

But I was careless, I was stupid.

I should’ve used my head,

but my head was the one feeding me all

this bullsh*t.

And that’s when you left.

You left to go fix yourself in peace,

because every time I broke you,

you would just fix yourself and leave me

broken.

I couldn’t fix myself, I didn’t know how,

so once you started mending and I

didn’t,

I would tear you apart again.

Because remember you need to feel

what I feel.

And that’s when you left.

Maybe if I had been patient, maybe you

could’ve helped me,

but when you walked away

I learnt to fix myself.

And for that I am forever thankful,

I love you.

But I know you’re happier without me,

so I’ll let you stand on your own and let

you be.

Because with me you weren’t happy,

and that’s okay, I understand why.

And not once did I say sorry,

but today...

The cold is comforting, almost as if I’ve grown to

feel the nonexistent warmth trembling in between each

shiver

The light has long since left

And the demons have long since lost interest

And at this point I’ve grown so use to the darkness; I can

almost see

Every single day my mind seems to

Feel the need to remind me that I’m still not good enough

And that I’m just a burden for everyone else to carry

How dare I ask for anyones help?

I don’t deserve it.

Do you know how it feels to

Foresee the week ahead and then just think,

“I’m not gonna make it”

“This week might be the death of me”

Because everything you have to do seems so terrifying and

big...

And you can’t do it.

You can’t get out of bed,

You can’t do your projects,

You can’t meet your deadlines,

You can’t pretend every single thing in your life is fine,

because it’s not fine...

I... am not fine.

I am terrified of what I’m becoming,

I am horrified by what I see in the mirror.

This is me. This is the best I could do? This?

Pathetic.

“Stay positive”

“Think positive thoughts”

“Just don’t be sad”

Right, because it’s that easy.

Do you even know what it feels like

To drown in air?

To feel like your one hand is constantly above the water

while the rest of you is submerged?

And you can’t just float back up

And there’s literally nothing holding you down

But your mind that keeps telling you, you can’t swim

So you just stick out your hand and you hope someone

pulls you out

Until you realise you’re surrounded by thousands of

people

Drowning just as you are

And you realise the odds of someone saving you

Are zero to none.

Because everyone else needs saving too

And you don’t really want to be a bother

So you just pull your hand down with the rest of you

And as the sun baked your hand it now feels

Extra cold in the water

And you just give in to your mind

And you sink down to rock bottom

And you stay there.

Because no one even noticed how you slipped under,

So you kind of just blow out your last breath

And before all the bubbles explode at the surface

Your lungs gasp

But you stay down

Your vision darkens and your head goes silent for the first

time in your life

And you hear nothing but the sound of your slowing

heartbeat

And as you automatically draw a breath

Your lungs fill with water

And...

and that’s it, then right before

The sweet release of death

You find yourself back at the top with your hand baking

above the waterline in the sun,

And you just experience this over and over again

And this all while you’re sitting in your chair, lying in your

bed, at a party

Surrounded by loved ones and people you genuinely give a

sh*t about.

Funny how depression kinda just doesn’t give a damn

where you are or whether it’s 3am...

Or 3 pm.

Funny how you can’t do anything about it

And how you just need to keep it to yourself

Because you refuse to be a burden

And bother people with your struggles.

Funny how that’s not funny at all.

Your Guide to Understanding Mental Health

By Kat Bernickow & QT

What is Nihilism?

Nihilism is one of many philosophies. It is the belief

that all values are unsubstantiated and that nothing

can be known or communicated. Nihilism is regularly

connected with outrageous negativity and an extreme

suspicion that censures presence. A genuine Nihilist

would have faith in nothing, have no loyalties and

no purpose in life. A couple of philosophers claim

to be nihilists, but nihilism is best connected with

philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche. It is contended

that its destructive impacts would in the long run

annihilate all ethical, strict and magical feelings

and accelerate the best emergency in mankind’s set

of experiences. In the twentieth century, nihilistic

themes-epistemological failure, value destruction,

and cosmic purposelessness- have preoccupied

artists, social critics, and philosophers. The fear of

Nihilism stems in the move towards Atheism because

without religion individuals control their own belief

as well as what good morality is to them. Nihilism

was popularized in 1862; this makes it clearer to see

why this philosophy caused fear.

Why is Nihilism not all bad ?

Like most philosophies you control the extremity into

which you believe it. The beauty of philosophy is

that it is human; it is not created by a “higher power”;

philosophy is made to be criticized. Philosophy

is an offering rather than a command. Nihilism

does not only offer us pessimism; the rejection

of religious and moral principles in the belief that

life is meaningless can inspire one to live the truest

version of their life. The more we feed into the fear of

judgement from a “god” or the people that surround

us we stray further and further away from who we

are, because we fear that who we truly are is not

“acceptable”. If you believe that life is meaningless,

why wait to do the things you want to do? If

sensation is only held in the time you live on this

planet, why not chase it ?

On today’s episode of “wtf is mental health”, we’re discussing

DISORDER FROM A BIPOLAR MIND

By Kat Bernickow

Bipolar disorder is so much more than what the media

portrays it to be. It is not just about being catatonically

depressed or being so manic that you want to jump off

the top of a building, because you think that you can fly.

Bipolar affective disorder is probably one of the most

misconceived mental illnesses out there.

Just like everything else, bipolar disorder falls on

a very grey scale. What we see in the media is very

much in black and white. No two people experience

bipolar disorder exactly the same way, but the feelings

and symptoms of those suffering with the illness are

relatively similar. There are many types of bipolar

disorder and mainly what we see on TV is barely

scratching the surface of bipolar disorder type 1. There

is bipolar disorder type 2, cyclothymic disorder, etc.

Like I said, it is not just in black and white.

So, from a bipolar mind, what is a form of bipolar

disorder really like?

Having bipolar disorder is very much like being in a

toxic relationship with somebody who has not a clue

what they want. It mainly consists of trying to figure out

your feelings. It is difficult wondering if you are sad or

if you are happy and when you are happy there will be

that gnawing voice at the back of your head asking if

this is real happiness or if it just the mania. The mania

is definitely not better than the depression. It is a scary

space to be in from a logical point of view. From a manic

point of view, it feels exciting in the moment. It is as

though you are high on cerebral drugs. You can clean

your entire house and redo all of your cupboards as if it

is the most exciting thing to do. Personally, as an artist

my best work comes out of a manic episode. I can write

almost thirty chapters in less than a day. When you are

manic it feels as though the world is moving at a much

faster pace. Everything feels funnier and it is definitely

true that you feel as though it would be possible to

do things that are humanely impossible. When you

are manic it can seem as though you are the life of the

party when in reality you are in a very dangerous and

destructive state of mind.

The fall down from that is excruciatingly painful.

Sometimes it does not immediately lead to a depressive

episode. Sometimes, there is a period of stability and

it will then feel like a safer fall down. The period of

stability is not as amazing as one would think. The

thought that the depressive episode is inevitable is not

a pleasant thought to have. Although, once you are in

the depressive episode, it brings forth a safe feeling of

hollowness. But you still ask yourself the question, “so

what now?” Being in a depressive episode brings along

lots of feelings of embarrassment more than anything

else. Embarrassment about what might have happened

during the manic episode. Being in the depression is

very confusing because you are very harsh on yourself

to stop feeling that way, but you also do not want to be

manic and cause more destruction.

Bipolar disorder is a confusing disorder. You are never

sure if being manic or being depressed is better than the

other in terms of how you are feeling. Having bipolar is

much like being on a seesaw. Somedays it will be more

up and down constantly, and you dangerously switch

through the episodes quite rapidly. Somedays you are

just sitting in the middle, and then somedays you will

either sink to the very bottom or be stuck right at the top

with no safe way down. Sometimes being in the middle is

the very best place to be, but the only reason it is hated

so much is because it is only a matter of time before the

seesaw starts moving again.

I first came across Equine Therapy when a family

member with severe clinical depression was admitted

to a place of healing in nature. It was here where she

began her healing journey and part of that healing

was working with horses and caring for them and

participating in the Equine healing process. Yes, even

cleaning up their poop!

Ah! The power of horses, so beautiful, so majestic.

Horse is a creature representing success and selfactualization.

When you know what drives you and

puts the awareness of your motivations to work,

you can get much further and faster than you ever

imagined possible. Carl Jung suggested Horses

symbolize personal power, the things you master in

your life, and your natural gifts.

The horse as a Spiritual Guide, as your Spirit Animal,

appears to you as an omen, one indicating a call for

freedom is galloping into your world. If you find

yourself in an unhappy relationship or what feels like a

dead-end job, Horse’s mantra is “Stop horsing around;

it’s time to choose a new path forward!”

Likewise, Horse’s repeated appearance is a message for

you to allow Horse Energy to gift you with the power

and endurance you need. The Spirit of this trusty steed

can carry you down the right path to breaking free of

whatever bonds hold you back for achieving mental

clarity, growth, or success.

Horse is believed to be a benevolent Spirit Animal

Guide that can facilitate your spiritual awakening and

growth by teaching you how to establish an energetic

symmetry between duty and independence. There

is a time to rest, a time to run, and a lot of living in

between. Horse encourages you to enjoy the sweet

apple that falls from the tree, engage in those sweet

moments in your life, before embarking on your next

challenge.

People who identify with Horse as

their Totem Animal enjoy freedom of

expression, and it will seem nothing

short of miraculous. Horses are

Animals of family, friendship, power

and adventure. With Horse as a Totem

Animal, jumping life’s many hurdles

comes easier to those who walk in this

powerful creature’s Energy.

There is more to the horses magic than

just jumping hurdles, the horse has a

laser-sharp focus, one that helps them

in determining how and when to jump

over such obstacles. It is rare for Horse

to remain stuck in a rut. Horse Totems

are all about going in a new direction!

Is it time to move on? Should you get a

new home or travel to places unknown?

Carry a Horse Totem when you seek

answers to those kinds of questions.

So how exactly does the healing process

with horses work?

“ Equine-assisted therapy (EAT)

encompasses a range of treatments that

involve activities with horses and other

equines to promote human physical and

mental health.[1][2] The use of EAT

has roots in antiquity, and EAT applies

to physical health issues in modern

form dates to the 1960s. Modern use

of horses for mental health treatment

dates to the 1990s. Systematic review

of studies of EAT as applied to physical

health date only to about 2007, and

a lack of common terminology and

standardization has caused problems

with meta-analysis. Due to a lack of

high-quality studies assessing the

efficacy of equine-assisted therapies for

mental health treatment, concerns have

been raised that these therapies should

not replace or divert resources from

other evidence-based mental health

therapies.” (Wikipedia)

According to the Ranch of Tennessee,

Equine Assisted Psychotherapy (EAP) is

one of the fastest-growing segments in

the mental health field. EAP has proven

to be an extremely effective form of

therapy that can be implemented in

tandem with other more traditional

modes of therapy:

Equine Assisted Psychotherapy

“Unlike traditional therapies,

Equine Assisted Psychotherapy

(EAP) takes place within an arena

or barn setting with horses, a

mental health professional, and

an equine professional. Through

structured and mutually respectful

activities, EAP utilizes the horse

to both provoke responses from

the client and then mirror that

client’s behaviour. EAP is not “play

therapy”, nor is it some existential

experience. Rather, the therapist

facilitates the session and monitors

the client while the equine specialist

monitors the horse in order to

infer and interpret the subtle

ways the horse’s body language

communicates comfort, discomfort,

and incongruence in the presence

of the client. Using specific exercises

and scenarios, and with the aid of

the treatment team, EAP clients

learn about themselves and others

by processing the horse’s response

and their own feelings, behaviors,

and patterns during the session”.

The ultimate goal of Equine Therapy

is to build skills such as personal

responsibility, assertiveness,

non-verbal communication, selfconfidence

and self-control, while

debriefing “stuck” emotions. Equine

therapy is seen as part of a holistic

approach to helping individuals

work through various problems. It

is often part of the holistic healing

for Addiction.

BENEFITS OF EQUINE THERAPY

According to The Arbor, “A

significant body of evidence has

shown that animal therapy offers a variety of benefits

that foster psychological, mental or emotional growth.

As many different forms of therapy include horses, the

benefits vary based on the intent of the program.

Communication

Horses are sensitive to non-verbal communication and

respond accordingly. This is especially helpful for those

suffering from anxiety. The non-verbal communication

between the horse and handler is effective even for those

who may have speech or language barriers.

Trust

Horses are huge! For the individual, learning to trust

such a large animal aids in building or restoring trust

for those who have a history of trauma or abuse. Horses

are unbiased and non-judgemental but react to the

emotions and behaviors of the human.

Impulse control

Horses respond to non-verbal cues, thus communicating

with a horse calmly and effectively requires emotional

awareness and regulation, and self-control. EAT has

been demonstrated to help those with mental disorders

or developmental delays reduce aggressiveness and

agitation. It also helps patients to learn how to establish

healthier communication techniques that can be applied

to their human relationships.

Relationship boundaries

The relationship between the rider and the horse

requires mutual respect. People with a history of abusive

or controlling relationships learn to manage relationship

and behavioral boundaries by working with the horse.

They later use these skills to better manage their human

relationships.

Relationship skills

There is a multitude of reasons a person may have a hard

time establishing and keeping healthy relationships.

Mutually respectful boundaries are a start, but a

relationship also requires trust and communications.

Horses are non-judgemental. However, much like

humans, horses do not offer unconditional acceptance.

They respond authentically to their human “partner”

and can sense when a person is trying to control them.

A horse will comply out of fear but this isn’t a healthy

connection.

Successful communication with humans is also largely

non-verbal. In fact, 55% of communication is body

language, and 38% is tone. Thus only about 7% of how

people communicate is done with words.

Horses respond to both verbal and non-verbal

communication. The horse then chooses to either

comply, resist, ignore or connect with the person. Just as

the horse can sense when a person is trying to dominate

or control them, they can also sense when a human

wants a truly heartfelt connection. As the human

learns how to form a sincere emotional bond with the

horse, these skills can translate into healthier human

connections.

Stress reduction

Getting outdoors and playing, participating in activities

that include equine riding and games, reduce stress and

bring fun and joy to people. This can help clients release

over-controlled emotions and gain some spontaneity.

Riding a horse in the fresh air, experiencing the beauty

of nature, can be a spiritual and relaxing activity.

Oh, how they said, “history repeats

itself,” and oh, how they were

right.

History, as we know, has repeated

itself quite vividly in the 21st century.

Although, it is 2020, it feels as though

we have entered a parallel universe

and we’re right back to the 70s. Oh,

the 70s, the beautiful era of wild hair,

fashion ICONS and most importantly,

the insanely tasteful music.

Take a look at these four 70s fashion

trends to hop back onto in 2020

1The Corduroy Pant

Surely, we cannot always let bygones

be bygones. The pant has found its way

back into the 21st century as the perfect

weekend fit, and it is well worth it. The fit

is slimming, and comfortable enough for a

stay at home weekend.

The Clog

What an absolute shocker. Clogs? The

wooden-soled shoe has become a craze yet

again and with the perfect fit, it would be a

desired fashion fad. Do not be scared, opt for

them!

3The head scarf

The dream of a headscarf. Not only is

it now made that simple to cover up the

fringe you have cut horribly wrong, it is

desirably stylish. Oh, and it is one of the

best accessories to do a reenactment of our

beloved Elizabeth Taylor.

4The crochet tops

The perfect summer fit has bounced back,

remixed, and compelling. It is perfect for those hot

days and beach visits.

From those relaxed fits to circular sunglasses, it is quite

clear that we are about to experience a resurgence

of the iconic era of the 70s. Not to mention, vinyl’s?

With almost every modern musician selling versions

of their albums in the form of vinyl’s too, it

is time to ask your parents for their old

turntable that is stored away and

channel your inner Led Zeppelin and

David Bowie. Welcome to the 70s!

2 c. baby spinach

In a bowl, beat eggs with 1 Tbsp water and ¼ tsp each salt and pepper.

Yoga has been recreated in many different forms over

many years. There are many, many types, but my

favorite is the Ashtanga primary series.

Benefits of ashtanga yoga: primary series

Ashtanga yoga is a healing yoga sequence that builds

strength and detoxifies the body of physical and mental

toxins.

Physical benefits:

55

Ashtanga yoga helps with hip opening,

improving our flexibility.

55

Ashtanga yoga increases our physical strength

in helping us balance ourselves and sometimes

props, such as yoga blocks.

55

The best way to get the tone you’ve been

wanting, is a regular routine consisting of the

beautiful, rejuvenating sequence.

55

Our cardiovascular fitness increases, as the

sequence is challenging enough to keep our

heart rate up.

55

If you want to get that blood pressure down, the ashtanga series is a perfect start.

55

For runners, or anybody active, a perfect prevention of injuries would be to properly stretch

out those muscles with a nice, refreshing sequence.

55

Finally, it is well worth doing if weight loss is your goal.

YOGA with Kat

Mental benefits:

55

Ashtanga yoga is a beautiful sequence to help reduce stress and anxiety. The series of

yoga poses is lovely to do as a starting point for your day, as your stress and anxiety of

yesterday can be put to ease for the start of a new day.

55

For the artistic mind, ashtanga yoga is absolutely perfect

for that creativity boost.

55

A great way to start focusing on the work you’ve

been struggling to do is most definitely the

ashtanga yoga series. This series increases

the brain functioning through balancing

asanas and helps us to focus.

To start the Ashtanga yoga primary series, the

best fit would be any fitted, stretchy clothing. The

series consist of lots of movement, so comfort is

definitely key. That, and your yoga mat is all you

need to get moving! The sequence is perfect for

anything and can be done at anytime for as much

time as you feel is necessary. Now, hop on your

mat and start moving!

Warrior II — Virabhadrasana II

(veer-uh-buh-DRAHS-uh-nuh)

— is a standing yoga pose that enhances strength,

stability, and concentration. It’s named after the Hindu

mythological warrior, Virabhadra, an incarnation of the

god Shiva.

Warrior III — Virabhadrasana III

(veer-uh-buh-DRAHS-uh-nuh)

To bring a sense of freshness back to your practice,

try taking a new approach to Warrior III. It’s a pose that

challenges your body with both backward- and forwardbending

elements. It also builds power and grounding in

the legs while offering chances for lightness and play.

Downward Dog — Adho Mukha Svanasana

(ah-doh moo-kah vriks-SHAHS-anna)

Downward Dog Pose, Downward-facing Dog Pose, or

Adho Mukha Shvanasana, is an inversion asana in modern

yoga as exercise, often practised as part of a flowing

sequence of poses, especially Surya Namaskar, the Salute

to the Sun.

High Lunge — Utthita Ashwa Sanchalanasana

(OO-TE-TAH-AH-SH-WAH-SAN-CHAL-AN-AS-ANA)

But High Lunge is a great pose to practice for working

on squaring your hips, creating isometric strength in your

legs, and toning your pelvic floor. It works well before

coming into variations such at Crescent Lunge, Twisted

Lunge, or even Virabhadrasana 1.

Revolved Side Angle Pose — Parivrtta Parsvakonasana

(par-ee-VRIT-tah PARSH-vah-cone- ah-suh-nuh)

The revolved side angle pose strengthens the legs and

stretches the chest, shoulders, spine and groins. This

pose also stimulated the abdominal organs, improves

circulation and balance, and increases stamina.

A brief background of Faraway George taken from his website

farawaygeorge.co.za,

“Born in Pietersburg (Polokwane), Faraway George was greatly

influenced by Jazz as a young boy and started playing the guitar as

a teenager. He signed up to study architecture but halted his studies to

pursue a career in music. His debut EP, ‘Vir ’n Vreemdeling’, was released

in 2016.

These days, he listens to a variety of genres, including modern folk,

Afrikaans, alternative, Blues and Americana. He draws inspiration from

stories. “Sometimes it’s my own story; other times it belongs to someone

else. At times, I imagine stories and make them real,” he muses.”

I am someone who is very picky when it comes to the music I choose to

listen to, so understandably I was very nervous to sit down and listen to

a full album that I may or may not like, however I was very pleasantly

surprised to find that I enjoyed every song on this album!

This album is the perfect mix of relaxing music as well as music that

wants to make you get up, sing along and dance. I found it very hard

sitting down writing this article because all I wanted to do was get up

and bounce around my room. This album has everything you want from

beautiful melodies, jammy guitar and guitar solo and who does not enjoy

a good guitar solo? The album flows coherently and it is a great example

of how many artists have lost the beauty of music in over complexity

but Faraway George sticks to his roots and provides a stimulating and

enjoyable listening experience. If you are looking for a taste of Faraway

George I would recommend, Sugar Cane, Hey sister and Willow.

This album is perfect for anyone who enjoys music, no matter your age

! I will definitely be giving it download when I need something to listen

to, when I need a reminder of the beauty of life and when I just need to

remember to take a look around, take a deep breath and just let go.

When listening to pop-singer Nathan Smith’s new album titled “Here’s

to The Now”, expect to be transcended into a soulful & melodic state of

audio- euphoria.

Nathan Smith grew up with musical influences surrounding his life. His

father, Pat Smith, taught him how to play the guitar at the young age

of eleven. Nathan then started writing his own lyrics to songs & started

performing shows at various venues as well as on national television.

Whilst listening to his new album, it is evident that Nathan has two

highly-contrasting types of sounds: the song, Plastic Man, has an upbeat,

hardcore thrashing of his electric guitar, as opposed to his song titled

Closer, which gives listeners a more real, emotional & even a spiritual

connection, thanks to the soft strums of his acoustic guitar as well as the

soothing, safe sounds of his voice. In the song Scientists Say, Nathan

almost seems to “challenge” the ideology of evolution, asking rhetorical

yet stated questions like “So, I’ve come from a monkey then?” & “Why

are there still monkeys then?”. This song is in complete contrast to his

song Closer, which tells his story of his love & connection to the Almighty.

Nathan claims that original music & lyrics has always been the

quintessential aspect of his passion & love for music. Based off listening to

this album, his passion is evident in all the songs that he writes. Whether

you enjoy a good rock-out & air guitar session, or if you are looking for

a mellow, chillout session, “Here’s to The Now” is guaranteed to have a

song for everyone.

When musicians who have known each other for a long time decide

to make music together, you can look forward to a remarkable end

result... and BLY JY HIER is the perfect example to prove it.

It is a gripping contemporary duet by the brand-new Afrikaans group,

Ariose (meaning - “a melody”)– which consists of Xander Filmalter,

Renier Henning and Heidi Henning – and can be described as a

conversation between a couple trapped on opposite sides of the same

circle.

“BLY JY HIER is about those difficult times in every relationship that

leave couples feeling isolated from one another, even though they

are closer than their inner world allows them to experience in that

moment,” explains Xander, who wrote the song. “It is not meant to be

experienced only as a sad theme, but rather as a message of hope

that victory can be achieved in difficult times. The melody creates a

light foundation on which the interplay between the two characters

take place and the different emotions are also evident in the lyrics.”

Ariose is a passion project that was established in October 2020 to

create high quality Afrikaans music and also to separate the artists’

existing music careers from this new initiative. “Ariose’s goal is to

make good Afrikaans music. Our music is written and created with an

acoustic guitar and during production other elements are added such

as electric guitar or piano,” says Renier.

The music video of the single was produced by Xander and Renier

during level three of lockdown. The video was filmed at Heidi and

Renier’s house and shows different shots of the group performing

the song. Xander’s serious performance is in sharp contrast with

Heidi’s fun and energetic style, which represents the two sides of the

relationship circle that is one of the main themes of the song.

“Because of lockdown, we were not allowed to go out to film the

video. We shot it at home one Saturday afternoon,” the guys reveal.

“Initially we wanted to use a humorous theme, but the performance

shots worked so well that everything just fell into place. We are very

grateful for the energy that Heidi brought to the video, which we did

not necessarily have.”

Xander and Renier have been friends for many years. Xander has also

recorded quite a few of his songs at Renier’s studio. After Heidi and

Renier got married and she started spending more time with them in

studio, they realized that Xander and Heidi’s voices complement each

other very well.

“Xander and Heidi did a cover of the Bryan Adams hit, Star, for fun

and the reaction was very positive. So, we have been talking about

collaborating for many years, but we have always been too busy. At

the beginning of 2020, we decided that it was now or never. Xander

was looking for the opportunity to focus on his singing without having

to worry about playing instruments and I agreed to handle that part

of the project,” Renier explains. “Heidi has done backing vocals for

Xander in the past and I have always felt that their voices work well

together. So, we decided to give the duet a go and it turned out very

well.”

According to the group, they really enjoyed working together on BLY

JY HIER and are looking forward to sharing it with fans. “Because

we are all such good friends and have always enjoyed making music

together, the recording process was effortless,” says Heidi. “We

all understand and support each other very well and bring unique

characteristics to the table.”

THE PEOPLE BEHIND THE MUSIC

Pieter Filmalter, better known as Xander Filmalter, grew up in the

Vaal Triangle and played in bands since he was seventeen. He used

to make up new lyrics for existing melodies, until he saw one of his

friends playing guitar at a school concert. He immediately fell in love

with the instrument and taught himself to play on his grandfather’s

guitar… in the same way in which he would later go on to teach

others the same skill.

He has been working in the music industry for the past twenty-oneyears

and is the former lyricist and guitarist of the English rock band,

AvenFall. The singer, who originally only did English songs, only

decided to enter the Afrikaans Music Industry after a friend asked him

to write a song. In 2017 he released his debut Afrikaans album, Hier

Kom Dit Nou, which delivered numerous successful singles and music

videos (that all featured on kykNET NOU!), including As Jy Dans,

Bloed Is Rooi, Hi Jy and the title track, Hier Kom Dit Nou.

He credits Johan Vorster, Richard van der Westhuizen and Jo Black

as some of his local music influences. He also enjoys listening to

international artists like The Offspring, Green Day, U2, Lenny Kravitz,

Goo Goo Dolls and Bryan Adams and would love to work with the

likes of Richard van der Westhuizen, Francois van Coke and Karen

Zoid someday.

Xander describes himself as an introvert, who often needs some quiet

time to recharge and think about life. Although he is happy with being

a teacher, he dreams about writing songs for well-known artists and

films, recording a few more albums and conquering the hearts of the

South African public. He has recently recorded six new English songs

and is excited about the future.

Renier and Heidi Henning have been performing together since 2014

as the gospel group, Kings Collective. Since then, the duo has shown

that they are a force to be reckoned with – on stage and at home.

Together, they have performed at various churches and spiritual

functions, released an English album – Humbly We Come – as well

as several singles (Hold Me In Your Arms, Fountains Of My Heart, U

Is Vir My and Kamerliedjie) and music videos that were all very well

received and can still be seen on TV.

According to the couple, Ariose is definitely not the end of their gospel

career and that it is merely a way for them to separate their secular

and spiritual music. “Kings Collective still exists, and we will never

stop making gospel music. It is part of who we are, and we still have

a lot of new material on the way. We just wanted another name under

which we could release songs that are not necessarily spiritual in

nature,” Heidi shares.

Renier has been in love with music since he can remember and started

playing instruments when he was twelve. Later he started producing

his own songs and, over the past decade, this has also been his day

job. It, therefore, comes as no surprise that the guitarist is responsible

for the technical music aspects (composition, production and sound

engineering) in the group. He loves watching Formula 1 racing in his

spare time and enjoys a wide variety of music. He credits Goo Goo

Dolls, Keith Urban, Imagine Dragons and Tim McGraw as some of his

current favourite singers. The musician believes that people are moved

when an artist is authentic and puts his soul into his music.

Heidi has been singing since she was a little girl and has always

been a natural at writing poetry and lyrics. She taught herself to play

guitar in high school and has been performing with bands since the

age of sixteen. She decided to enter the Gospel market after being

saved when she was twenty. As Kings Collective and Ariose’s female

vocalist and lyricist, she draws inspiration from life experiences, her

relationship with God, people and music. When she is not singing or

working as a graphic designer, she enjoys gardening and listening to

genres like Gospel, Country, Folk and Rock. She believes that music

reveals more about an artist than anyone would ever know, and this is

evident in the way she pours heart and soul into each song she sings.

Ariose considers BLY JY HIER to be the first of many songs together

and is very excited to see how the listeners will react to this single.

“We hope that the public will be experience the single in the spirit in

which it was created. It addresses a universal theme, that will appeal

to audiences of all ages,” Xander concludes.

breakout director Julia Jansch’s upbeat

African dance tale, My Father The Mover,

which won Best Documentary Short Film at

the Tribeca Film Festival. The film is part of an

exciting lineup of award-winning new feature

and short film acquisitions under executive

producer Sheila Nevins. The lineup tackles the

social, political and cultural topics affecting

the immediate lives and future outlooks of

young people today.

Following its launch with Academy Awardnominated

short St. Louis Superman and

award-winning feature Gay Chorus Deep

MY FATHER THE MOVER for the Academy

Awards and do a full awards campaign.

“Culling the magnificent Film Festivals with

their extraordinary choices of documentary

offerings, it is a gift to acquire films with heart

and soul, insight and vision,” said Nevins.

My Father The Mover tells the story of Stoan

dancer who uses African electronic

Gqom beats to motivate kids in the township

of Khayelitsha, South Africa to jive through

their hardship and find their superpowers.

Jansch has always been stirred by characters

and narratives that unveil what makes us most

human. While talking to Stoan, Jansch learned

of the work he does in his community. She

The South African director, writer and

It is an inescapable fact of life that for every relationship between a parent

and a child, there will come a time where the child becomes the carer and the

parent the dependant. This heart-breaking yet universal theme is at the core of

a touching new film.

THE FATHER, based on an acclaimed, award-winning play, starts out as a

simple drama hinged on a familiar dynamic – a middle-aged daughter is losing

patience with her elderly father, a mischievous and highly independent man,

whose grip on reality is fading but who refuses to allow a carer to look after him.

She is moving away and, to ensure her father’s safety in her absence, she must

find someone who will take care of him. As he – in the early stages of dementia –

tries to make sense of his changing circumstances, he begins to doubt his loved

ones, his own mind and even the fabric of his reality.

Making his debut as film director is the award-winning French playwright,

Florian Zeller, who was responsible for the original play. He co-wrote the

screenplay with his long-time collaborator and translator Christopher Hampton,

who emphasises that while the theme may be familiar, the film is not a medical

treatise. “It is not about a medical condition and the people who suffer from it,”

he explains. “Instead, THE FATHER tries to find an artistic way of presenting

the way dementia affects the people around the patient – those who suffer the

fall-out.”

The story is deliberately told through the eyes of Anthony, the elderly father,

whose life has become a source of ever-disorienting confusion, with the

characters and locations constantly shifting – resulting in the viewer feeling as

confused as Anthony is. It is disorienting and surreal, but it speaks volumes to

living with dementia. “I didn’t want to tell the story from the outside, because

it’s already been done so many times,” says Zeller. “I wanted to try to tell that

story from the inside, as if the audience was in the main character’s head.”

As Zeller homes in on the theme with thoughtful direction and careful

storytelling, the message he wants to convey is supported by exceptional acting.

Anthony Hopkins and Olivia Colman masterfully portray the dementia-afflicted

man and his daughter, Anne. While Colman’s expressive face registers all the

emotions her character is going through, Hopkins perfectly captures the fear,

frustration and anger of a man who is losing his grip on reality. As he spans

the chasm between independent adult and scared child, his rich and emotive

performance adds elements of both thriller and horror to the film.

Hopkins and Colman are supported by an excellent cast, including Mark Gatiss,

Imogen Poots, Rufus Sewell and Olivia Williams.

Despite its dark subject matter, the film is built on a foundation of empathy and

celebrates the unbreakable bond between parent and child.

Commenting on the theme, Colman says: “It is terrifying to think of your

world shifting beneath your feet when you’ve lost the ability to comprehend the

change. For all the complexity I think at its heart the film is very simple. It is

about loss and love, and the way you suffer when the person you love no longer

knows you. It is beautifully written and very moving.”

She’s right. THE FATHER is an accurate and somewhat unsettling account of

both what it is like to love someone with dementia, and what it is like to live as

someone with dementia, and offers a heart-rending account of what happens

when a relationship, which has functioned in a certain way for decades, suddenly

and irrevocably changes.

The film recently won the coveted Audience Award at the San Sebastian Film

Festival, and Anthony Hopkins is slated for a Best Actor Academy Award

nomination next year for his devastatingly emotive performance.

THE FATHER is distributed locally by Filmfinity Pty (Ltd.) and will be released

in South African cinemas on 15 January 2021.
