CABIN
“ME” AS A FLIGHT ATTENDANT
sensitizing booklet
Hello!
Thank you so much for your participation in our research!
This booklet is intended to learn your personal experience as a flight attendant and understand cabin crew culture. It will also help
you to get in the mood for the online interview (45 min. long) where we are going to discuss your needs regarding the future
aircraft interior design. This booklet contains various assignments. There is an assignment in the booklet for 5 days of the week.
The assignments will take about 10 to 15 minutes every day.
There are no right or wrong answers; you are, of course, the expert of
your experiences. Express yourself freely and have fun with the booklet!
When you are done with the booklet, please don’t throw it away! We
kindly ask you to take photos of the booklet or scan it and send it to
ilgaz.gulgec@safrangroup.com or +31655948857 on Whatsapp.
This booklet will be used internally for the rest of the study.
Good luck!

How do you define your cabin crew
culture?
Culture is “the system of shared beliefs, values, customs, behaviors, and artifacts that the members of a society use to cope with their worlds
and with one another, and that are transmitted from generation to generation through learning.” (Bates and Plog, 1976)
We can look at the culture at a nationality level; boundaries are set by nationality (where people are raised or where they live right now), or by
region, profession!
What are the core cultural values in your profession as a cabin crew? How would you define values, rituals,
heroes, symbols within cabin crew culture?
Please fill in the scheme to present the cabin crew culture.

A day in the life of you as a flight atten
Even though the journey is sometimes perceived endless by the passengers, we know that the cabin crew is always busy with so many things
during the flight journey. We are interested in your experience during the flight.
Imagine a typical working day. What are you doing and feeling before and during the flight?
Please make a timeline of all the activities you often go through your during the flight. Make it according to your emotional highs or lows on
the graph below.

During the flight, you should have interacted
with so many passengers and flight attendants
from different cultures. Now review your day
again and think if the culture played a role in
your flight experience. Sometimes conflicts can
occur between individuals or social groups that
are separated by cultural boundaries (which may
be set by language, nationality, socio-economic
class, or sexual orientation).
