Toilet Practices (RM 20/21)
Public toilets play a key role in the transmission and rapid spread of COVID-19. This 10-weeks course aims to develop context-specific and user-friendly guidance for the design of public toilets that pose minimal risk for those who use and maintain them. As part of this course, students (1) learn how to conduct a systematic literature review and practice this on a relevant research topic/question; (2) they are invited to reflect on their positionality as a student, architect and researcher in order to identify positions of power or marginalisation in context; and (3) they learn how to conduct an autoethnography in order to study (and learn from) their own bathroom related practices. presents initial ‘practice diaries’ that resulted from an autoethnography exercise. Students were encouraged to record temporal dimensions (when, duration, sequence, repetition); spatial dimensions; performative dimensions (what is actually happening?); and social dimensions (norms, values, beliefs). The excerpts from these diaries reveal that toilet practices differ based on different contextual aspects, such as socioeconomic or culturla background. The following pages present individual diaries. They are not attributed to specific students in order to preserve their privacy. This research-led course is rooted in the course leaders’ collaborative, international and transdisciplinary work on urban sanitation transitions in countries of the ‘Global South’.

My bathroom is right next to my room – maybe one of the reasons I wait up until the last
minute before going to use it. I always rush into the bathroom, locking the door behind me.

Day 1:
17:15: Using the toilet
I perched partially on the toilet as I weed – not having my thighs fully on the seat.
I wiped in a downwards motion. Another trickle came down, so I wiped again. Then I
pulled up my underwear, trousers, closed the lid and flushed. Once the flush had finished,
I picked up the lid to check that the toilet bowl was clear/clean. I then proceeded
to washing my hands at the sink, using warm water and soap. Firstly, I rinsed my
hands then I used soap, worked it into a lather and rinsed to finish. I turn of the tap,
shake my hands and exit the bathroom, unlocking the door and using my elbow to push
the door handle as my hands were still wet. I didn’t have any of my own towels in the
bathroom at the time, and I refused to use my flatmates which I knew she used to
soak up water on the floor at times.
22:30: Bedtime routine
Firstly, I use the toilet – It is routine to use the toilet before going to sleep. I sit on
the toilet, wee and wipe in a downwards motion. When clean, I close the lid and flush
the toilet. I open the lid again to check that the toilet bowl is clear. I then wash my
hands with soap and water. I shake my hands briefly to air dry.
I take my toothbrush from the glass, rinse the bristles, squeeze a generous amount of
toothpaste on and brush my teeth in a circular motion. I get distracted in the mirror
and then continue to brush. Whilst brushing, I utilise the space in the bathroom and
dance around until I have enough lather to spit. I repeat until the lather runs out.
The whole brushing process lasts around 3 minutes. I rinse the brush and return it to
the glass. Next, I use floss to clean between my teeth, rinsing the tape if any large
bits come from between my teeth. During flossing, I am constantly checking my teeth
in the mirror. Afterwards, I fold up the floss and put it in the bin using only my pinkie
finger to open the flap of the lid. I then wash my hands again with soap and water
and shake to air dry. (Same towel issue as before)
Day 2:
09:05: Using the toilet
Again, I rushed to the toilet after lounging in my bed for a while. I entered the bathroom,
locking the door behind me, and sat on the toilet. First, I weed and wiped and
then I had the urge to poo. In preparation, I put some toilet roll into the bowl of the
toilet and aimed the poo into it, to prevent back splash. This was successful. I continued
to wipe my bottom in a downwards motion until it was clean. I washed my hands
with soap and water, making a soapy lather and rinsed.

Plan
Section
09:08: Brushing my teeth
Firstly, I rinse my mouth with water, gargle, and spit. I rinse my toothbrush, squeeze
a generous amount of toothpaste, and rinse it. I brush in a circular motion, creating
a lather in my mouth. Whilst brushing, I constantly move around the bathroom, dancing,
stretching, and jigging! I spit whenever my mouth is full and repeat brushing and
dancing until I have no more lather in my mouth. After my final spit, I rinse my toothbrush,
add more toothpaste, and scrub my tongue, making sure to get the back of it
without gagging. I check that my tongue is clean in the mirror. Following this, I rinse
the outside of my mouth and check in the mirror that I am clean. I then leave the
bathroom, turn off the light which is located outside of the bathroom, enter my room
and cream my hands and lower face.
10:40: Shower
After exercise I enter the bathroom to take my morning shower. I check the bath
to see if its clean and give it a rinse before stepping inside. I make sure the shower
water is piping hot – roughly 48 degrees Celsius. I stand under the water and rinse
whilst thinking about life. Next, I take my shower puff, rinse it and squeeze Sanex
shower gel onto it. I scrub myself from the top down, creating a soapy lather. I clean
my bottom last. I make sure to rinse all of the suds off my skin and the rest of the
suds from the bath. When I feel like I have been in the shower long enough, I turn off
and exit the shower. I step onto the bathroom mat, stretch over to take my towel
and dry myself. I step into my sliders, put my towel back on the radiator and take my
charcoal ex-foliating gloves to the sink. I rinse the gloves and begin scrubbing my face
in circular motions, using cold water. I follow my t-line and move from my chin, up my
jawline. I use the cold water to close the pores. I let my face air-dry whilst washing
my gloves with soap and warm water. Then, I take my towel, leave the bathroom, and
enter my room. I use olive oil to moisturise my face as it is lighter than my body cream.
I use Astral to cream the rest of my body and I apply a prescribed cream to areas of
my skin with eczema.
(I went to the toilet again, but did not record the time)
17:53: Toilet
I entered the bathroom – open the lid, sit down.
Looking towards the bath as I wee, I blow out
of my mouth and watch the shower curtain move
in response. I reach back to the toilet roll, take a
few sheets and wipe myself. I pull up my underwear
and trousers, hold the flush to ensure the
toilet is clear. I proceed to wash my hand. I rinse
first and then aggressively push the soap pump –
it is empty. I rinse my hands under warm water,
a little longer than usual since there was no soap.
I clean under my nails and then turn of the tap
and shake my hands. I exit the bathroom, unlocking
the door and using my elbow to push the door
handle and flick off the light switch. I use my
body to open the door to my room and then dry my
hands on the towel at the edge of my bed. I then
take sanitiser from my desk-side drawer to make
up for not having any soap in the bathroom.
20:34
Another toilet trip – except I went to the small toilet, further from my room as the
bathroom was occupied by another flatmate. The small toilet is always dirtier as I
don’t use or maintain that one often. I sit on the toilet, wee, and use toilet roll to wipe
myself. Then I close the lid and flush the toilet. Next, I wash my hands with soap,
clean under my nails and rinse. Whilst rinsing, I use my hand to disperse the water
around the sink to wash off the dirt in the basin. There’s no towel in this small toilet,
so I unlock the door with two fingers and open it with my elbow; I proceed to my room
and dry my hands on my own towel. I then cream my hands afterwards.
23:23
My final trip to the toilet of the day: I open the toilet lid, perch on the edge of the
seat and wee. I reach back to wipe twice, pull up my underwear, close the lid and hold
to flush. I then wash my hand – rinsing first, them attempting to pump out soap
despite knowing that the bottle is empty. I continue to rinse my hands, scrubbing them
whilst jigging around. I do this for roughly 20 seconds. I turn off the tap and shake
my hands to get off excess water.
Following this, I take my toothbrush from the cup on the shelf, above the sink. I rinse
it, squeeze on toothpaste and begin brushing. Whilst brushing I walk around the bathroom,
look in the mirror, and play with my hair. I brush for around 4 minutes. During
this time I spit 4 times. After the final spit, I run the tap, rinse the brush, apply a
small amount of toothpaste and brush my tongue. I spit, rinse my brush and brush my
tongue another two times before a final rinse. I then put my toothbrush back into the
glass on the shelf. Next, I take the floss from the shelf, pull out the string and floss
between my teeth. I watch myself in the mirror throughout the process. When I am
finished I put the floss in the bin, wash my hands and shake to dry. I exit the bathroom,
enter my bedroom and cream my hands before going to bed.
Day 3:
7:47
I wake up at 7:00 pray, read my bible and read
the news on my phone whilst still lounging in bed.
At 7:47 I get up to use the toilet, taking my
towel from the bottom of my bed with me. I go
to the bathroom, lock the door behind me, put my
towel on the radiator and proceed to use the toilet.
I wee, wipe, close the lid, hold the flush, check
the toilet is clean and then I wash my hands.
Again, there is no soap, so I spend a while longer
rinsing my hands.
I check the shower and see dirt in the bath, so
I spray Dettol on different areas of the bath
and leave it to sit. In the meantime, I brush
my teeth. I take my toothbrush from the glass,
squeeze toothpaste, rinse mouth, spit and continue
to brush. Whilst brushing, I take off my
durag and put it on top of my towel on the radiator.
Once my mouth is full, I spit again and
continue brushing whilst taking off my underwear
and put it on my towel. I open the blinds halfway
and open the window slightly to prepare for the
steamy shower ahead. Finally, I spit and rinse my
toothbrush and my mouth – swallowing a bit of
the water. I take off my nighty, put it on the
radiator next to my towel. I tie up my hair in a bun (I didn’t have a bobble). Before
stepping into the bath, I take the cloth from the windowsill, rinse it under the bath
tap as it had dried out. Then I wipe down the bath, rinse it with the shower. I take
off my sliders, placing them next to the bathmat and step into the shower. I have a
quick shower as I am running late for a morning call. I rinse myself, rinse my shower
puff, put shower gel on, scrub my skin and rinse. I step out of the shower onto the
bathmat, step into my sliders, grab my towel, quickly dry my self from head to toe, and
leave the bathroom. When in my room I rub olive oil on my face, cream the rest of my
skin with astral, put on my underwear, clothes and then make the phone call.
10:00
Toilet time: I go to the bathroom to have a poo. I see that the toilet seat is wet
from a flatmate using the shower beforehand. I wipe the toilet seat multiple times
with tissue before sitting down. I wee, poo, wipe multiple times, close the lid, hold the
flush, check the toilet is clean and then I wash my hands. Again, there is no soap, so I
spend a while longer rinsing my hands with warm water. I shake my hands to dry and
go back to my room to use the hand sanitiser.
12:20
I was on a work call, so I quickly went to the bathroom to use the toilet. I open the
lid, perch, wee, wipe, close the lid and flush the toilet. Then, I wash my hands with
warm water, shake, go back into my room to dry my hands and cream them before returning
to the call.
13:35
I use the toilet again: sit on the toilet, wipe, close the lid and flush. I washed my
hands as usual – no soap, rinsed with warm water and shake to dry. I noticed that my
other flatmate’s toothbrush and toothpaste had been moved to the shelf where I
keep my toothbrush and toothpaste. The blinds and window had also been closed.
13:40
I went into the kitchen to make lunch. I put my
dirty dishes from my room into the sink and then
set on the kettle. Next, I take out a bowl from
the overhead cupboard, take out a container of
food from the fridge and empty the contents into
the bowl and put it into the microwave. However,
I do not yet turn the microwave off. I them
walked over the sink to wash the dishes. I share
the kitchen with two other flatmates. Normally
the kitchen is quite clean, but today it was
messy. I don’t like to clean up after other people
all the time but today I just wanted the room
to be clean. Therefore, I wet a cloth, sprayed
the surfaces with Dettol spray and wiped it with
the cloth. Afterwards I swept the floor with a
broom, using the dustpan and brush to clear the
dirt – I emptied it into the kitchen bin. Afterwards,
I washed my hands with antibacterial
soap, turned on the microwave and made a hot
drink. I took my food out the microwave, grated
cheese on top and then washed the remaining
dishes, washed my hands, dried them on a dish
cloth, left the kitchen and returned to my room.
Above is a plan of my bathroom.
There are three major stations
involved in sanitary practice: the
toilet, the sink and the bath (or,
more, specifically, the shower, as I
almost never take baths).
To the left is a tally of all my activities
performed in the bathroom over an
entire week.
In the morning I normally awake by 9 or 10 am. The
first thing I do is go to the bathroom to relieve myself,
drink some water from the tap and splash my face.
I then make breakfast, almost always consisting of
cereal or toast, which I eat watching TV and reading
the news headlines on my phone. Breakfast finished, I
wash up the bowl and head back to the bathroom.
Most days after breakfast I will take a shower
(although lockdowns and social distancing have made
this less necessary than in the past). I let the water
run and check the temperature until it is warm and
pleasant. I get in, climbing over the rim of the bath
and immerse myself in the water. I start by running
shampoo through my hair which I let sit (although I
have been told recently that this can dry out the scalp)
whilst I wash my body from top to bottom. I wash out
the shampoo and apply conditioner, waiting a minute
or two before washing this out too.
Once ready to get out, I turn off the water,
pull back the shower curtain and pick up the towel I
have placed on the floor. I dry the whole of my body
whilst still standing in the bath, starting with my hair
and working my way to the soles of my feet. I make
sure I am fully dry before stepping onto the bath mat;
my dad taught me at a young age that proper shower
etiquette requires not a single drop of water to drip
onto the floor.
I apply deoderant to my armpits (roll-on),
moisturiser to my face and a good amount of styling
wax to my hair to complete my daily morning sanitary
routine. All that is left to do is get dressed, spray a few
drops of aftershave and get on with the rest of my day.

TOILET DIARY - a typical evening
5:10pm – After I finished university classes I went to the
bathroom to take out my invisalign braces before I have
dinner. Out of the three bathrooms in the house I use the one
closest to my room which I share with my sister. My routine
for this includes taking them out, which my dentist taught
me to do, and rinsing them with warm water and then placing
them in their holder. I then leave this in the bathroom and go
downstairs to eat. This process takes about 2 minutes to
complete and I repeat this process approximately 3-4 times a
day every time I am about to eat.
7pm- I go back to the bathroom after I finish eating. I brush
my teeth for 3 minutes, use mouthwash which takes about 30
seconds and then put my braces back in whilst using the
mirror above the sink. Once I finish this I exit the bathroom
and carry on with my day. I use the same bathroom which I
used to take my braces out. I repeat this process every time I
put my braces back in which is about 3-4 times a day after I
have a meal.
11pm- I make my final trip to the bathroom before I go to
sleep to avoid having to get up during the night. I use the
toilet and then use a bidet afterwards to wash myself and
then I use toilet paper at the end to dry myself. Once I finish, I
wash my hands for about 20 seconds using a liquid soap and
then I dry my hands using the towel which hangs on the
radiator. Once I finish, I go back to my bedroom for the night.
9pm- I go to the same bathroom and I go into my cupboard
below the sink to get one of my face masks and I apply that
onto my face and neck. I then leave the bathroom whilst I
wait for the mask to dry which takes about 10 minutes. Once
its dry I go back to the bathroom to wash it o and then
wash my face with my cleanser. I proceed to carry out my full
skin care routine in the bathroom so that I can use the light
up mirror above the sink. This routine takes approximately
15-20 minutes. I repeat this process twice a day, once in the
morning and once at night.

5:37PM: I walked over to the bathroom and switched the light on. I locked the door after myself and I lifted the toilet lid and proceeded to sit
down. There aren’t many steps to how I use the toilet. I sat down and started scrolling through my phone. I started having a little scroll through
my instagram.
My page was full of stories about the abortion rights protests in Poland.
5:39PM : I was done so I put my phone away and grabbed the toilet paper. I cleaned up and flushed the toilet. I walked over to the sink and
washed my hands. We have some antibacterial wipes by the sinks so I wiped my phone down too.
5:40PM : I looked in the mirror and thought I should probably give the cut on my forehead a wipe with some antibacterial wipes too and change
my wound closures. That took me a few minutes as I am so scared of blood. I disposed of everything in the bathroom bin and after around a
couple more minutes I was done.
5:42PM : I left the bathroom and switched the light off.
7:39PM : After I had dinner and washed up my dishes, I decided to apply a hair mask. After around 20 minutes – at I decided to jump in the
shower.
7:59PM : I once again switched the lights on in the bathroom and started to prepare the shower. I started running the water , got undressed and
reached for my toothbrush and toothpaste - I know weird – I brush my teeth in the shower. I do it because I think that if I’m wasting water in
the shower I might as well brush my teeth in there rather than getting out after and running more water in the sink. I rinse my hair, shampoo it ,
rinse it, condition and rinse again. I continue to shower and after around 11 mins of intense Adele karaoke I step out.
8:10PM : I dry my hair and body off and use moisturisesr – the water in Manchester dries out my skin so much more than the water in London.
8:12PM : I grab all my stuff and leave the bathroom, I switch the lights off and go into my room.
9:00AM: I woke up and made myself a coffee. I popped into the bathroom to wash my
hands and got back into the ktichen. I have my coffee and watch an episode of Gogglebox.
10:30AM: I got into the bathroom and locked the door after myself. I sat on the toilet and proceeded
to look through my phone. I text my mumma to wish her a good day and then put my
phone away. As usual I reached for the toilet paper and then flushed the toilet. I went over to the
sink to wash my hands and started my morning routine.
10:36AM: I reached into my drawere for some cotton pads and I grabbed my cleansing milk. I wiped my face
and I did the same thing. I then reached for my toner and poured it onto a clean cotton pad. I wpied my whole
face and then washed my hands. I disposed of the cotton pads in the bin and reached for my face cream. I
moisturised my whole face and then picked up the antibacterial wipes to clean my wound.
10:38AM: I left the bathroom and switched the light off.
11:20AM: I left my flat to go and take the bins out. I got into the lift
and clicked the button to take me to ground floor.
11:23AM: I left the lift and took the bins out. As I was coming back
into the building and walking into the flats, I made sure to properly
sanitise my hands. The lift came and I got in. After I left the lift
I santised my hands as well and then walked from the lift to my
flat.
6:15PM : I got on the train to go back London Euston.
6:46PM : I woke up from a nap, I must’ve falled asleep as soon as the train moved. I got up
from my seat and walked down the tight isle to find the toilet. I knew it was close because
the smell was so pungent.
6:47PM : I put my mask on. I then pulled my sleeve over my hand and pushed the door open. I
locked it behind me and made sure my mask was securely over my face, the smell was horrible.
6:47PM : I held onto the rail through my sleeve and hovered over the toilet, the seat was already down - I couldn’t bare to look down. Once I
was done I reached for the toilet paper and put the seat down. I flused the toilet through my sleeve again.
6:48PM : I walked over to the sink to wash my hands and then dried them on my jeans. I never use the hand dryer in small bathrooms as I
read once that where there is poor ventilation loads of feaces particles gather in the hand dryers.. or something like that.
6:48PM: I stepped out of the bathrom and took my mask down to take a deap breath. I instantly
reached for my hand sanitiser and sanitised my hands well before I made my way back to my seat.
9:03PM : When I reached home the first thing I did was go upstairs and wash my hands twice with warm water. Again I
sang a chorous of a song in my head to make sure I did it long enough. I washed my face afterwards with my face gel
and went to my room to get ready for bed - I was too tired to take a shower in the evening and decided to do it in the
morning.
7:41AM: I woke up at 7:30AM but lounged around in bed for another 11mins. I needed the toilet
so I decided it was time to get up and shower.
My room was very cold so I quickly made my way into my bathroom.
7:42AM: The heat of the bathroom floor burnt my feet as soon
as I stepped into the bathroom. I forgot that I had put the underfloor
heating on but I really needed a wee so I sat on the
toilet and made sure I kept on alternating which foot touched
the floor so that they didnt get too burnt.
7:44AM: I put the toilet lid down and flushed the
toilet. I then got undressed and jumped in the
shower. I looked out of my window and saw the
bus going past - thank God I don’t have to get
up and go to work. Before I got in the shower I
sprayed the bathroom a little so that my shower
was nice and relaxing.
7:46AM : As I usually do I got in the shower with
my toothbrush and proceeded to brush my teeth
and then showered.
7:55AM : I got out and dried myself with my towel. I walked to my room, moisturised
and put my clothes on.
8:20AM : I came downstairs and made myself a coffee. I then washed my hands in the kitchen sink and started
making myself breafast.
24 H HYGIENE PRACTICE
1:09 brush teeth
I use electric toothbrush to brush my
teeth with toothpaste from yunnanbaiyao.
I started to use electric toothbrush
since 2016 when I first entered
the university, because once by coincidence,
when I was shopping online,
I found an electric toothbrush is quite
beautiful, and I decided to try. As for
toothpaste, it was brought when I
was traveling and it is the most suitable
one for me that I can get from
convenient store.
1:13 wash hand
I wash my hand, because I need to
clean my hand before my skin care
routine, or there can be lots of bacteria.
I wash my hand before washing face
to prevent my face from bacteria.
When I get up, the first thing I do is to
brush my teeth, same way as night.
15:55 wash hand
15:50 brush teeth
24 H HYGIENE PRACTICE
16:00 wash face
After that, I wash my face using
cotton tissue but not facial cleanser.
In my family, we all use cotton tissue
to wash face, due to that we think it
is kind of dirty if we use traditional
towel which will be used for relatively
long time compared with one-off
cotton tissue, then there will be
much more bacteria. And I don’t use
cleanser when I get up, because
there is almost no dust on my face,
excessive clean can make skin sensitive.
18:00 do dishes
After dinner, I do some dishes with
my parents. We always share housework
in our family. My parents told
me when I was still little, that I live in
the house and have meals with them,
so I need to do something like housework.
Hence, we just share.
20:48 do laundry
After we all taking shower, we gather
all the dirty clothes and do laundry to
prevent they get smelly.
19:15 take a bath
And around 7 pm, I go shower. Because
if I take shower after class, it
will be too late, so I prefer do it earlier.
And I use body wash with brush
today, because I found I have the
tendency of having pimples at my
back recently. And every time I have
pimples, I use brush for several days,
and it will recover quickly.

I recently stayed at my
parents' home. There
are two toilets in this
home. I usually use the
smaller one. This one is
also available for the
guests.
I brush my teeth three
times a day (morning,
noon, and evening).
Washing my hands is
the number one thing
I do every day, because
whether It's going to
the bathroom, making
coffee, or eating fruit,
I feel the need to wash
my hands after it's all
over.
Grandparents' Home
My grandparents
are all over 80 years
old, especially my
grandmother is not easy
move, so a handdrail has
been installed beside
the toilet, to facilitate
the elderly to go to the
toilet.

Visitors are required to sanitize their hands at the foyer.
Some took care to wipe their shopping basket handles.
The crowd in the supermarket barely maintained social
distancing, especially children. I looked for the toilet after
paying. It is at the end of the exit aisle, which meant I had to
circumnavigate a cluster of people in the opposite direction.
A pair of anti-theft scanners guard the toilets foyer. A
janitor’s toilet is parked next to them, which led me to guess
that the toilets are well maintained. Two doors most likely
indicate gender-specific toilets, but with the doors propped
open I had to go up close to notice the gender signs. I was
immediately disgusted by a strong ureal stench in the male
toilets. I entered a cubicle so I can safely place my groceries
aside. The toilet bowl had a wad of unflushed tissue which
upset me even more. The tissue supply is plenty. I used
some tissue as a makeshift glove to lift the lid and seat
then undressing to pee. I closed the lids before pressing
down the flush handle, again with a tissue-glove. I hurriedly
washed my hands to leave the unpleasant stench.

The store is a popular place for students and adults. I pulled
the main door with my umbrella hooked to the handle. I
sanitized my hands before going upstairs to the toilets. The
store has implemented the one-way system. The interior is
spacious, well lit, and comfortable. There is just one wheelchair-accessible
toilet, situated next to a platform lift. A set
of sanitary products sit on a stool next to the door. I closed
the door, however this time without worrying about touching
the handle and lock. The lock is a simple pivoting hook.
I was more aware about the heights of the handrails, dryer
and mirror, adjusted for the wheelchair user. The tissue
supply is plenty. I lifted the toilet seat before undressing to
pee. I noticed my body language while peeing: I would tilt
my pelvis forward and placing one hand on my hips to hold
back my jacket. I turned the flush handle and washed my
hands. I noticed that I paid more attention to my fingertips
and the skin between my thumbs and forefingers, because
I frequently touch my face with these parts of my hand. I
unlocked the door and exited the toilet.

I realized that I have become more relaxed the more I went
out into public places. While in Shoryu at Picadilly Gardens,
I was less concerned touching objects and surfaces with my
bare hands than I used too. The toilets are in the servant
zone of the restaurant, past a fire door. The door is pulled
open and locked with a simple pivoting hook. The cubicle
is well cleaned and well lit, and I was happy with not having
to relive the strong ureal stench of Asda’s. There is a Dyson
hand dryer, and the tissue supply is plenty. I began the routine
of relieving myself: lifting the toilet seat lid; undressing
to pee; redressing and cleaning myself with a piece of tissue;
closing the lid and flushing; then washing my hands and
drying them before exiting.
