First Sunday of Advent
Theme: “By Patient Endurance You Will Save
Your Lives” the virtue of patience is not as a rule
one of the strong points of people today. They want
things to be done quickly and efficiently. Promises
and appointments should be kept as accurately as
they were made; otherwise an outburst of
impatience may follow. We have all experienced
the impatient and compulsive driver behind us who
takes unreasonable chances and causes disaster
quite often. Patients in a hospital or nursery
obviously must practice the virtue of patience.
They have to wait for recovery patiently and when
they are old or sick for a long time they often have
to wait for company or friends with even more
patience.
A classic example of impatience is that of the
Jews at Mount Sinai. In waiting for Moses’ return
from the mountain, they lost patience and
constructed the golden calf. They said to Aaron:
“Come, make us a god who will be our leader” (Gn
32,1).
Advent is a time of waiting for the coming of
Christ. Promises have been made to us about a way
out of our distress. Salvation will come, but when?
We pray, but does God listen? The Advent Bible
readings deal with this problem. Waiting for
somebody to come, i.e., Jesus Christ, supposes
patience. We must accept the human condition of
“not yet” with the patient hope for better things to
come.

ADVENT CELEBRATION. As part of your
Advent Celebration come join us for Mass on
Thursday evenings at 7:00 p.m. on December 6 th ,

MINISTERS SCHEDULE. We are currently
working on the Minister’s Schedule for the first
quarter (January, February and March). If you have
a scheduling conflict for this time period, or if you
no longer wish to be active in your ministry, please
contact the coordinator for that ministry by
December 3 rd .

the Retirement Fund for Religious writes, “We
thank God for every religious sister who taught us
in school, not only our ABCs, but also to love
God.” Show your support for the senior Catholic
sisters, brothers and religious order priests who

CHRIST RENEWS HIS PARISH MEN’S
RETREAT (CHRP). Applications are now being
accepted for the 1 st Christ Renews His Parish
(CRHP) - Men’s Weekend. Space is limited to 24
Candidates and the available spots are filling up!
The programs starts on Saturday morning January
12 and runs through mid-day on Sunday January 13,
2013 (it includes an overnight stay). All adult men
of the parish are invited to participate (the program
is also open to non-Catholic husbands of a Parish
Member). This fellowship and spiritual renewal
program is just starting in our parish but note that
future weekends will be offered. A weekend for the
Women of the Parish will be scheduled at a later
date. Men of the Parish wishing to sign up can
obtain a form from the Parish Office. To learn

LUNCH WITH SANTA. Come join us on

GIVING TREE GIFTS. All Giving tree gifts
(unwrapped) and their Angel tags are due back no
later than 12:00 noon Sunday, December 9. Please

HOLY NAME CHRISTMAS PARTY. This year
the St. Barbara Holy Name Society will hold its
annual Christmas Party in the church hall on
Friday, December 14 th starting at 6PM. All men of
the parish are invited to attend for an evening of fun
and fellowship. We invite you to come and meet
other men of the parish at this event. Please arrive

at 6 and dinner will begin at 6:30 with prayer
and fellowship will follow. For more information,

ADOPT A SENIOR FOR CHRISTMAS. Last
year the residents of Woodcrest thoroughly enjoyed
the care packages that we provided for them at
Christmas time. We will again be trying to provide
them with some personal items. They have 127
residents, 112 females and 15 males. The list they
have provided is as follows: Stuffed animals, throw
blankets, men’s cologne, women’s perfume, hair
brushes, makeup kits, hair dryers, facial lotions,
small bottles of lotion, small bottles of shampoo,
cookies in tins, hair clips or hair bands. Cash
donations are always welcome as well. If you
would like to participate, please drop off these items
at the Youth Table in the Hall with John Kidwell.
Thank you for thinking of others during the Holiday
Season.
2013 MARCH FOR LIFE ADULT / FAMILY
BUS RESERVATIONS. The Diocese of
Covington Pro Life Office is finalizing plans for
their annual pilgrimage to Washington DC in
January commemorating the 40 th anniversary of the
Supreme Court Decision of Roe vs. Wade. Due to
January 22 nd falling during the inauguration, the
March for Life in 2013 will be held on Friday,
January 25 th . This year the Pro-Life Office will
provide an adult bus for an overnight stay in
Washington DC. The bus will depart Covington on
Thursday morning, January 24 th and return on the
morning of January 26th. For cost and additional

FOR LIFE - CHRIS RICE MEMORIAL FUND
SCHOLARSHIP. Many high school students each
year are unable to attend the March for Life due to
the cost of the trip. The Chris Rice Memorial Fund,
named in memory of a young man who was
dedicated to pro-life causes, enables those students
who cannot afford the pilgrimage to Washington the
opportunity to go. Donations in any amount are

VOCATION CRUCIFIX. We will be sending the
new Vocation Crucifix Schedules out in January. If
you would like to participate in this program by
taking the Vocation Crucifix into your home once
or twice a year, please call Debbi Vogt (344-1404)
or the office and ask to be added to the more than
120 families already praying for an increase in
vocations in our parish, our diocese and the world.
This is a very worthwhile program and one of the
easiest ways to give of your time to St. Barbara
Parish.
HELP ST. VINCENT de PAUL. from October
15 th to January 6 th , when you shop at Remke Biggs,
use your cloth grocery bags and at checkout you
will receive a wooden Sixth Sense token. Simply
place that token in the SVdP-NKY bin and for
every token we receive, Remke Biggs will donate 6
cents to the St. Vincent de Paul food pantry as we “
Reach Out To Our Neighbors In Need.”
CATHOLICS COME HOME. December is the
month that as Catholic’s we are asked to invite
fallen away Catholics back to church. Please take
this opportunity to seek fellow Catholics and talk
with them about returning Home. For more

KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS FISH FRY. Your
Parish Knights of Columbus at Fr Bealer Council
will hold our monthly Friday Fish Fry on December
7th. You deserve the best fish fry so come to your
parish Kof C Fish Fry so our charitable work may
continue. Come by and try our delicious fish and
other items. We are sure you will see your friends
and neighbors there too. The Kof C hall is located
at 605 Lytle Avenue (off Main Street) in Elsmere.

HOLIDAY REMEMBRANCE SERVICE. A
special holiday program to honor the memories of
loved ones lost will be Thursday, December 6 th at
7:00 p.m. at Chambers & Grubbs Funeral Home,
Madison Pike Location. There will be a candlelight
ceremony, guest speakers and light refreshments.
Please bring a picture of your loved one for the
ceremony.
