Sharon C. McGovern, lives in Phoenix, Arizona. She loves art and its
simplicity. She enjoys her ability to express her emotions and share
her creations. Her series of work, Dancers, influenced my work for
this assignment. She explains art as “the way a line can become a
face, a brush stroke a feather, a scribble an expression of emotion.”
Mainly, she is appreciative for the skill and capacity to perform and
achieve her technique and workmanship.
Artist Statement
In my art, I documented the span from the moment
when I broke my feet, the duration of the recuperation
process and the moment when I was able to dance again.
I remember the date when I was diagnosed with two
broken feet, I remember feeling scared and sad, and the
long stretch of time that it took for me to fully
recover. To me, all of these feelings and emotions seem
to be an interesting way to tell time. I have created a
dance, which shows the pace, the very slow steps when
healing and how I began with small, slow movements on
flat feet and demi pointe shoes. As the music picks up
the pace, you sense my enthusiasm, two months later,
when I was able to slowly stand on each foot (one at a
time). Then finally, I demonstrated my progress in a
little over three months, when I was fully healed and
given medical clearance to dance, “full out.”
