Sophie Wake, AOH 2020 brochure cover artist, is a
contemporary British artist, working from her studio in
Brighton. She graduated from the University of Brighton
with a BA Hons in Graphic Design & Illustration and
worked for more than twenty years as a successful
freelance illustrator before turning to painting full-time
four years ago. Sophie’s animal portraits and candid
portrayals of the female form strip away layers to reach
inward, capturing the beauty of raw emotion. Read more about Sophie and
her work on page 4

Covid-19 guidelines for
Open House visitors
All Open Houses have put measures in place to ensure a
safe and enjoyable experience for visitors this year.
Please help us by following the guidelines:
l Please wear a face covering when visiting Open
Houses this year (unless you are exempt and carry an
NHS exemption form). Open Houses will be able to
offer you one if you do not have one with you.
l Please use hand sanitiser on entry to each Open
House and wash your hands when you can.
l Please maintain a 2 metre social distance from other
visitors. Visitor numbers in all venues are restricted
to follow current government law.
l Please wait to be invited in if the Open House is
already at full visitor capacity.
l Visitors who have downloaded the NHS Track and
Trace app will be asked to check in via a QR code at
each venue. Other visitors will be asked to write down
contact details on entry to venues.
l If you are asked to queue please do not block
pavements or other house entrances. Please always
keep a safe distance from others.
l Where relevant please follow one-way systems.
l Use contactless payments where possible.
l If you develop a new continuous cough or fever,
please inform the venue, leave immediately and
follow government advice on staying at home.

Houses
WINTER 2020
Online 21 November - 31 December
Visit in person 5 - 13 December*
*See website for regular updates
T
he Artists Open Houses (AOH) Festival will be a little
different this year. Due to the new national lockdown,
the AOH festival will be online 21st November - 31st
December. In November we will be an online-only festival, with
virtual tours of Open Houses available to view on our website.
From 5-13th of December we hope to return to normality, when
you will be able to visit Open Houses and meet artists in person.
This year has been like no other and we are all in need some festive
cheer; alongside an array of inspirational art, the AOH Festival
will deliver the best aspects of both May and Christmas Festivals,
offering great art as well as unique, handmade Christmas gifts.
Online ‘Virtual Open Houses’ will include online video tours
round artists’ houses, as well individual online galleries. By
browsing the artists’ listings you can hear about their work, the
processes of making and the ideas behind it, and you can buy the
work directly from the artists and makers. From December 5th-
13th we are hopeful that the regular AOH Festival, where artists
welcome visitors into their homes and studios, will return. *Please
visit: aoh.org.ok for regular updates and specific opening days.
This year AOH is delighted to have internationally regarded
artist, David Shrigley’s support for our young artists, mentoring
sculpture students from the University of Brighton (supported
by a student bursary from the Hannington’s Lane development
company) and giving online workshops and tutorials to recent
graduates exhibiting in the New Grounds exhibition.
The Artists Open Houses festival is a community event,
encouraging participation from artists at all stages of their
careers, from school and college students, through young
emergent artists, to established, professional artists and makers.
Many charities supporting artists with mental health issues,
learning disabilities and older artists in residential care, are also
taking part virtually or in person, reflecting their experiences of
the last few months through their art.
More than ever this year it is important to support our local artists
and makers who help to make Brighton and Hove the vibrant city
that it is. Many AOH artists have made good use of the isolation
of recent months, finding space to explore new ideas and ways of
working. This festival offers a wonderful opportunity to discover
online (and, we hope, in person) really exciting, inspiring and
distinctive new work, alongside a host of Christmas gifts.
Many Open Houses are providing booking systems so that
you can plan your visits in secure environments. All will supply
facemasks and hand sanitiser and will follow current government
Covid-19 guidelines, including managed social distancing.
AOH would like to thank Arts Council England and Brighton and
Hove City Council for their valuable support this year.
Remember to visit aoh.org.ok for regular updates.

Sophie
Wake
2020 cover artist
ophie Wake, AOH 2020 brochure cover artist, is a
contemporary British artist, working from her studio in
SBrighton. She graduated from the University of Brighton
with a BA Hons in Graphic Design & Illustration and worked for
more than twenty years as a successful freelance illustrator before
turning to painting full-time four years ago. Sophie’s animal
portraits and candid portrayals of the female form strip away
layers to reach inward, capturing the beauty of raw emotion.
Sophie says:
‘At its best my fine art practice responds naturally to the rhythms
of meditation that fill my life.
Channeling imagination through the process of somatic
self-inquiry allows a reaching inward to unrefined, raw human
emotion. Most importantly I like to paint spontaneously and
swiftly. My favourite pieces come from keeping the energy of a
particular feeling tone, expressing the unfiltered joy of precious
moments in presence, and somehow harnessing a sense of that
into the painting.
The three figures in my cover painting HOPE look up for
divine intervention. With hands on hearts they seek to liberate
themselves from the mental and physical shackles that bind them
to their inner turmoil and unceasing mind chat that clouds their
truth. They HOPE to reveal clarity of presence and in doing so
they will become potent and clear in their actions for the welfare
and benefit of all beings.
In 2017 I was shortlisted for three Artists Open House Awards,
winning Best Newcomer. In 2018, my painting HERD was
selected for the Royal Academy’s 250th Summer Exhibition,
where it appeared in Grayson Perry’s hand-curated Yellow Room,
and in 2019 I won Best Artists Open House for my solo show. I am
delighted and grateful to be the AOH 2020 cover artist this year.

David Shrigley
New Grounds and We, You, Me
AOH is hugely grateful to internationally acclaimed artist and 2018 Brighton
Festival Guest Artistic Director, David Shrigley, who supported our young
artist projects. Using Zoom, David mentored sculpture students from the
University of Brighton (supported by a student bursary from the Hanningtons
Lane development company), as well as giving workshops and tutorials to recent
graduates exhibiting in the New Grounds exhibition.
Details of NewGrounds at Gallery Lock In, can be found on page 15
and We, You, Me at 15 Brighton Place on page 36.
David says:
‘It was a great pleasure to be involved with the AOH projects.
The tutorials that I led with students and emerging artists were the first
that I have done online: I guess this will be the norm for a while.
In spite of the remote interaction the conversations we had were really
enjoyable and the participants were all very generous and thoughtful in the
presentation of their work.
It would have been nicer to meet in person and to physically see the work but
maybe having the events via Zoom etc. were actually quite efficient and I feel we got
to have a longer and less pressured discussion that we otherwise would have had.
I have my mask ready and am looking forward to seeing the work at the
actual exhibitions.
Making art is so valuable for many people’s health and wellbeing and the AOH
project provides a priceless opportunity for artists to share their work.’

Deep Time
The unique works of Andy Taylor and Keith Grey; two former Wirral school
friends, allow an interplay between the deliberate and the accidental, the
material and the metaphysical, abstraction and figuration. Working with
mixed media and a variety of materials including paint, plaster, wax and
chalk on canvas, paper and wooden board, the works show how texture and
colour can be used to create fresh and innovative paintings.

New Grounds @ Gallery Lock In
Gallery Lock In, Little Western Street, Hove BN1 2PU
New Grounds and Gallery Lock In present Body/
Nobody, an exhibition that creates a dialogue
between the physical and digital realm. Featuring
works from emerging artists working in photography,
augmented reality, performance, illustration
and print-making, the exhibition will explore the
implications of presence, isolation, shared spaces,
absence, omnipotence and dissonance.
The subject of collective memory underpins this
diverse group of works, confronting the inherent
dichotomy of mark making as a tool for recollection.
Particularly with the photograph, which marks the
absence of the subject it presents, it also holds the
potential to cement it in time. Between the physical
installation and online gallery, the show will ask if
memories can be stored in objects, in lines of code,
in traces of what has been left behind and whether
we lose these markers in the digital realm where
everything is constantly perpetuated as present.
Are digital spaces dangerous for collective memory,
do they bring us together or push us further apart?

Grounds) and Beth Troakes (Gallery Lock In) and

Abigail’s abstract oil paintings are inspired by ‘the edge of the rainbow’,
the blurred place where reality and our emotions and imagination mingle.
It’s the place that transcends what we see and creates those moments that
capture the heart and touch our soul. Abigail was born in Brighton and
graduated in Fine Art, Painting from Chelsea College of Art.

Inspire Me and Fill Me Up : Faye Bridgwater
A close up of Chapters: Faye Bridgwater
New venue for 2020! Faye returns to Artists Open Houses, welcoming
you to her own home for the first time with this joyful solo exhibition!
This year, Faye had a huge confidence boost, with her work winning not one
but two prizes: the John Purcell Paper Prize for the Royal Institute of Painters
in Water Colours and the Derwent Art Prize (People’s Choice). She also had
work selected for The Society of Women Artists annual exhibition. After this,
she was buoyant and started creating her new work with ease. With this
confidence came bold, expressive brushwork and self assured joy, laying
down exciting colours and lines.
Faye’s home will be filled with
contemporary landscape
paintings, beautiful drawings,
quick studies, ceramic landscapes
and greeting cards. Her work is
inspired by the photos posted
on her Brighton Skies Facebook
Group that Faye founded in 2017
that now boasts over 15,000
members.

We, You, Me
15 Brighton Place, Brighton BN1 1HJ
Hanningtons Lane Student Bursary
We, You, Me, the Artists Open Houses student bursary exhibition,
offered by the new Hanningtons Lane Development, features the work
of four third year Fine Art: Sculpture students studying at the University
of Brighton. Having last exhibited together in the OXY exhibition held
at the University of Brighton city campus galleries this new exhibition is
an opportunity to see the development of these emerging artists’ work
following their conversations with the internationally renowned artist and
AOH Ambassador David Shrigley.
Bradley Smith’s work focuses on contemporary gender issues. The work
encourages people to view gender as a constantly evolving, fluid construct.
Using household fabrics, text and symbols to create soft sculptural forms,
the work aims to engage audiences in questioning societies heteronormative
views on gender and sexuality.
Jack Digby’s work investigates the juxtapositions between nature
and the manmade. Through the use of metals, found materials and florescent
lights he examines themes related to human nature such as relationships, the
self, causes of destruction and decay, and our affiliation to the digital age.
Liberty Cheverall creates sculptures, drawings and installation artworks,
exploring the domestic and ideologies of the home. Themes of security,
finance, relationships, materialism and sentiment are explored. Her artworks
combine found objects with newly created forms to reflect both familiarity
and uncertainty. The work employs images of houses constructed from
carpet and metal to investigate ideas and emotions associated with home.
Sculpture and installation works frequently incorporate audience interaction
to complete the work.
Ainoa Burgos Gonzalez born in Segovia, Spain and is based in Brighton.
Her artistic practice is multidisciplinary, encompassing sculpture,
installation, performance and photography, to investigate the body and its
engagement in space. Sculpture and installation works examine the physical
body, the connection between people and the trace the body leaves on
surfaces and places.
