ADHD CONGRESS1 ST SOUTHERN AFRICANMULTIDISCIPLINARYADHDCONGRESS1 - 6 SEPTEMBER 2020Renata SchoemanAttention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder(ADHD) is the most common psychiatricdisorder in children – affecting 5% of theschool-aged population. Sixty-five percentof patients’ symptoms persist into adulthood, withestimates of the prevalence of adult ADHD being2.5-4.3%. ADHD is now recognised as a commonneurodevelopmental disorder, present throughoutlife, with a chronic, costly and debilitating course – ifuntreated.A COMPREHENSIVE DIAGNOSTICAPPROACH AS WELL AS ACCESS TOMULTI-DISCIPLINARY AND MULTI-MODALINTERVENTION IN PREVENTING THELONG-TERM COSTS OF ADHD ARENEEDED. IN SOUTHERN AFRICA, ACCESSTO CARE REMAINS A CHALLENGE, ANDCARE DELIVERY – IN BOTH THE PUBLICAND PRIVATE SECTOR – REMAINSFRAGMENTED.We are very grateful for the success of the recent 1 stSouthern African Multidisciplinary ADHD Congress,hosted by the University of Stellenbosch BusinessSchool, in partnership with the Goldilocks and theBear Foundation and LifePath Group. Due to theCovid-19 pandemic, what was initially envisionedas a three-day congress was re-designed as avirtual congress presented over 6 days. With thirtyspeakers, of which 3 wereinternational, a wide variety oftopics (see www.adhdcongress.co.za) were covered and trulyenhanced all healthcareproviders’ knowledge of ADHD.This congress aimed tobring together psychiatrists,paediatricians, generalRenata Schoemanpractitioners, psychologists andoccupational therapists – the whole team involvedwith the optimal management of ADHD acrossthe lifespan. Three hundred delegates attended:73 allied health care practitioners, 114 specialists,45 registrars, 15 general practitioners and 53trade representatives. We also had delegatesrepresenting 7 countries: South Africa, Namibia,the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, the UnitedArab Emirates, and France.A big word of appreciation for our sponsors: DrReddy’s, Cipla, Mylan, Novartis and Sanofi, as wellas Londocor for the event logistics and support.We are looking forward to welcoming you to the 2 ndSouthern Africa Multidisciplinary ADHD Congressduring the first week of September 2021!Renata Schoeman is a psychiatrist in privatepractice; Associate Professor, Leadership, University ofStellenbosch Business School.
