NDC members walk for
Rawlings in Northern Region
BY JONAS BIAWURBI
THOUSANDS OF
NDC members in
the Northern Region
embarked on a walk
in honour of the late
former president Jerry John Rawlings.
The walk which took place in
the early hours of Saturday on the
principal streets of Tamale is to
pay respect to the fallen hero who
died las week and to show appreciation
of what he has done for
Northern Ghana.
Clad in red and black, the vigil
saw past and current members of
parliament as well as former appointees
in NDC administrations
in attendance.
Addressing the public at the
end of the march, Northern regional
chairman of the NDC, Alhaji
Ibrahim Mobila assured that
the NDC will win all seats it lost in
2016 and claim additional ones
from the NPP.
He believed that the current
happenings
in the country are indication
that Ghanaians are fed up of
NPP government and have learnt
their lessons. Alhaji Mobila also
said that “the rot and mess caused
by the Nana Addo-led NPP gov-
ern-
ment within a period of four years
cannot be allowed to continue”.
He urged all members of the
NDC to turn out on December 7
to vote for NDC Presidential candidate
John Mahama and the NDC
to rescue
Ghana.
On his
part, Parliamentary
candidate
for Tamale
central and
former
Deputy
Trade Minister,
Ibrahim
Mohammed
Murtala
touted the
achievements
of
former President
Rawlings
in the
North.
He mentioned
road
network,
electricity,
water and education as some of
the major areas the late Rawlings
developed in the North to enable
it catch up with other regions in
the south.
Murtala Mohammed also used
the opportunity to appeal for a
peaceful, free and fair election
2020.
He also sounded a word of
caution to all those who intend to
foment trouble on the day of election
not to attempt so.
“We saw what this current NPP
candidate in Tamale central did in
2016 and the simple message is
that no one should attempt it
again, and no one should think
that they can foment trouble and
go home and sleep free, it won’t
happen, we want to have a very
peaceful election.
“The elections are conducted
and won at the polling station,
counting is done at the polling station,
the victor is declared at the
polling station. We will go to the
coalition center, we know what
they are planning to do and we
have a simple message for them,
no one should attempt it, we are
not going to do it, we won’t push
anybody but no one should try to
push us”, Murtala Mohammed
said.
Akufo-Addo is a dictator under a democracy
FLAGBEARER OF the National
Democratic Congress(NDC),
John Dramani Mahama has said
President Nana Addo Dankwa
Akufo-Addo has destroyed his
own credentials as a human rights
advocate in his regime.
“He came as a human rights
lawyer and standing for the rights
of people but he’s trampled on
more Ghanaian rights than any
president in the history of the 4th
Republic,” former President Mahama
said in an interview on
XYZ TV on Sunday.
Mr. Mahama described President
Akufo-Addo as a typical dictator
under a democratic
dispensation.
He argued that unlike what
pertained in his government, the
current President has been seen as
• President Akufo-Addo
the worst leader who has curtailed
Press Freedom in the country, as
journalists are threatened in their
line of duties.
“I have been president before
and you can ask any journalist
whether they were ever threatened
in the course of their duties.
“We didn’t shut down radio
stations. I mean Free expression is
something our constitution has
guaranteed but sometimes you
have people who come in ostensibly
as constitutional leaders, who
promise to promote democratic
freedoms and rights but you find
out that there can be dictatorships
even under a democracy, and
that’s what we are finding out with
this President.”
The NDC Presidential Candidate
returned to the Ashanti region
on Friday to resume his campaign
activities in the region after
temporarily suspending his campaign
following the demise of the
party’s Founder and former President,
Jerry John Rawlings.
He has move to the Upper
East Region with his campaign
tour.
“He came as a human
rights lawyer and standing
for the rights of people but
he’s trampled on more
Ghanaian rights than any
president in the history of
the 4th Republic,” former
President Mahama said in
an interview on XYZ TV on
Sunday.

'I thought’ Akufo-Addo was
a saint – ‘Remorseful’
Odike begs Mahama
NEWS DESK REPORT
THE FOUNDER of the
United Peoples Party
(UPP) Akwasi Addai
Odike has apologised to
former President John
Mahama for tagging his
government corrupt during the 2016
elections.
The relationship between the two
politicians become bad after the former
flag bearer of the UPP was disqualified
from the 2016 presidential election by
the Charlotte Osei-led Electoral Commission
(EC) for failing to meet the requirement
of the commission.
The disappointed presidential hopeful then declared
his support for then opposition party’s flag
bearer Nana Akufo-Addo and vigorously campaigned
against the NDC.
Mr Odike and Mr. Mahama met at Kumasi
Golden Tulip City Hotel car park on Sunday while
Mr. Mahama was joining an
NDC health walk in memory
of the late former president
Jerry John Rawlings.
The open meeting between
the two which lasted for about
three minutes appeared to
have brought some relief to
Mr Odike.
Mr. Odike after the meeting
told Ultimate FM’s Isaac
Bediako “The former president
was my friend but our
friendship went bad when I
campaign against him five
years ago.
During the 2016 elections
year, I thought Nana Akufo
Addo was a ‘saint’ because I
didn’t know much more about
his leadership qualities, I now
know the true character of the
President.
"His government is the
most corrupt government ever
to have happened in the country.
Therefore I think I had to
make amends with my friend
and move on’’.
He added: “When I approached
him at the car park
he received me well, I told him
• Akwasi Addai Odike
Mr. President let the past be
past. He smiled at me and I
also smiled at him, since 2016
this the first time we have
talked to each other and I’m
happy we have rekindled our
friendship’’.
He said, although he will
not campaign for Mahama, he
believes the NPP government
does not deserve another term
in office.
“The NPP in 2016 with my
support succeeded in branding
the former president John Mahama
government as corrupt
and incompetent but just ask
yourself what do we see in the
said incorruptible Nana Akufo
Addo’s government? Every
day one corruption.
Therefore I feel guilty for
some of the things I used to
campaign against John Mahama,’’
he stressed.
"His government is
the most corrupt
government ever to
have happened in
the country. Therefore
I think I had to
make amends with
my friend and move
on’’.
UPNMG launches loan
scheme for members
THE UNION of Professional
Nurses and Midwives, Ghana
(UPNMG) has launched a loan
schemes aimed at enhancing
tye welfare of its members.
According to the UPNMG,
"evidence available shows that
majority of Nurses and Midwives
in Ghana are burdened
with loans from financial institutions
with very high interest
rates."
This was contained is a
press statement issued at the
back of the launch of the outdooring
of the scheme.
"We therefore encourage all
Nurses and Midwives to come
on board and join the union
with a heart for enhanced benefits.
"The loan scheme comes to
complement our hire purchase
scheme which has been touted
as the first ever working hire
purchase scheme for Nurses
and Midwives in Ghana," the
statement signed by John Agbenyeavu,
the National Public
Relations Officer stated.
Below is the full
statement
The essence of a labour
union is to enhance the welfare
of members regardless of the
grade and cadre of those who
subscribe to it.
As stated in the Labour Act
2003, Act 651, section 79, a
worker is at liberty to form or
join any association of his or
her choice for the promotion
and protection of the workers
economic and social interest.
It is against this backdrop
that the Union of Professional
Nurses and Midwives, Ghana
(UPNMG) was formed. Despite
the short existence of
UPNMG within Ghana’s
labour space, we have come up
with life changing policies to
better the lives of Nurses and
Midwives in Ghana.

Tang Palace Hotel eyes five-star
move despite COVID-19 setback
TANG PALACE
Hotel- a four-star
hotel in Accra is expected
to expand aggressively,
despite
the devastating effect
of the coronavirus pandemic
on the hospitality industry.
Sajid Khan, the general manager
of Tang Palace Hotel sees the
hotel move from a four-star to a
five-star hotel in the near future.
Khan said investors have approached
the management of the
hotel for a franchise to develop
this five-star hotel.
“We have been approached for
the franchise and the plan for
Tang Palace Hotel is to come up
with a five-star hotel – Tang Paradise
hotel and Tang Place which
will be a three-star hotel. People
are approaching us to give them
the franchise. We are willing and
we have a plan to give a management
agreement of franchise,” he
said.
Khan said the COVID-19 pandemic
has affected the hotel but
hopes to recover soon.
“The whole hospitality industry
was badly affected; we were closed
for months. We opened in October
but we see business is very
slow. But we can understand, at
the moment Europe is affected,
foreign travellers are not coming
in but we are still hopeful that we
will recover soon.”
Survival of the fittest
He said the hotel is yet to receive
any form of financial support
from the government but has
had moral support.
Once we have closed the hotel
and no revenue coming in, employees
were still being paid and if
this goes on for long it will be difficult
for hotels to keep paying
their staff and keep the hotels
open.
“Hotel rates have been the talk
of the town – but believe me you
do not know hotel financing and
all that…the room rates that we
are charging only allows us to
make any profit if the hotel does
70 – 80 per cent occupancy. And
it’s not easy for all the hotels to do
70 – 80 per cent occupancy,”
Khan said.
“If you need to break even you
have to 50 – 60 per cent occupancy
with this rate, however due
to the pandemic on the business
all hotels have lowered down the
rates. We have no choice but to get
some business. So we are giving a
lot of discounts and doing a lot of
promotions to get some kind of
business,” he said.
Khan added, “Occupancy has
gone down to 20 -25 per cent
where some hotels were enjoying
about 80 – 85 per cent occupancy.”
But the general manager said
Tang Palace Hotel has survived
the negative impact of the coronavirus
due to its standard of services
and satisfaction of clients. He
praised the Ghanaian culture-setting
of being hospitable as a magic
positive attribute.
Khan said the hotel’s standard
of service has helped it stand out
thereby winning regional, national
and international awards in the
past five years.
Successes chalked
The hotel has been honoured
by the Ghana Tourism Authority
(GTA) for its outstanding performance
for the year 2019.
This year’s GTA Greater Accra
Regional Awards which was
marked under the theme: “Growing
Tourism Beyond the Return,”
the Tang Palace Hotel was adjudged
four-star hotel of the year
2019.
This makes it three times the
hotel has won this award in just
over five years of its operations; it
consecutively won it in 2017, 2018
and 2019.
Citation
The citation accompanying this
year’s award paid glowing tribute
to the Tang Palace Hotel is
renowned for its ultra-modern facilities,
excellent hospitality and
unparalleled customer services
provided by impeccable groomed
professional staff has resulted in
the hotel winning for the third
consecutive time the four-Star
hotel of the year award in the
Greater Accra Region.
“The award is in recognition of
efforts made over the years to
strive to maintain quality
standards thereby exceeding
the expectations of your
numerous guests,” the citation
added.
Recognizing the awards,
the general manager said
the awards have “boosted
the morale of the hotel
staff and the management
team” adding that they “will
continue to offer the best
services to our clients so
that we keep winning.”
“This is a good marketing
for us,” Khan added.
He said the hotel will
continue to hold high its maintenance
culture, adding “even when
we were closed, we painted the
whole place to make sure our
clients have the best and a serene
environment.”
About The Awards
The Ghana Tourism Awards
was instituted by the Ghana
Tourism Authority (GTA) in 1997
to reward excellent performance in
the tourism sector.
It is one of the flagship events

the court that members of
the jury were not ready.
According to the court, letters
have been served on various organizations
to get their members
ready but they were then responding
to those letters.
The court therefore adjourned
the case to November 20, 2020
hoping that members to serve as
jurors would be ready for it to be
empanelled.
The court then directed prosecution
to ensure that all lawyers
are served with the disclosure documents
to enable them prepare before
the next court date.

Editorial
We should fight global warming too
CLIMATE SCIENTISTS have defined
Global Warming as the term
used to describe a gradual increase
in the average temperature of the
earth’s atmosphere and its oceans, a
change that is believed to be permanently
changing the earth’s climate.
Scientific consensus on climatic
changes related to global warming is
that the average temperature of the
earth has risen between 0.4 and 0.8
°C over the past 100 years.
The increased volumes of carbon
dioxide and other greenhouse gases
released by the burning of fossil
fuels, land clearing, agriculture, and
other human activities, are believed
to be the primary sources of the
global warming that has occurred
over the past 50 years.
Scientists from the Intergovernmental
Panel on Climate, carrying
out global warming research, has recently
predicted that average global
temperatures could increase between
1.4 and 5.8 °C by the year 2100.
Changes resulting from global
warming may include rising sea levels
due to the melting of the polar
ice caps, as well as an increase in occurrence
and severity of storms and
other severe weather events.
Observations reveal that most of
the projections would materialise if
nations in Africa, including Ghana,
fail to put in adequate measures to
contain climate change. The weather
pattern has changed completely with
the adverse effects of Climate
Change being felt strongly in Ghana.
For instance, there are higher temperatures,
fire and floods, drought,
rising sea levels and risk to wildlife
and other living organisms.
These effects are primarily due to
human activities that, if controlled,
can greatly help in containing the
canker of global warming. We
should, thus, collectively help in controlling
activities from the energy
sector and industry that are responsible
for emitting Green House
gases into the atmosphere.
We must also fight the aggressive
deforestation in our forest belt, as
well as stop the gradual habitation of
our sea banks. There are many other
actions and inaction that are having
adverse effects on the environment.
The DAILY HERITAGE wishes
to state that Covid-19 seems to be
overshadowing other aspects of our
lives, including attention given to
older diseases. We surely have to
fight Covid-19 because failure to win
that fight would puts the health of
our people in jeopardy and labour
for wealth creation and development
would be seriously affected.
There is the need therefore to call
attention to the fact other issues
that affect our lives.
To that end, today we call attention
to global warming and I appeal
to everybody to play a role, however
small it may be, in fighting the
canker of global warming.

Ex-Hearts coach Kim Grant
in talks with Legon Cities
FORMER GHANA international
striker Kim
Grant is on the verge
of returning to the
Ghanaian top-flight
after opening talks with
Legon Cities yesterday, Ghanasoccernet.com
has revealed.
The Royals approached the
Czech-based trainer on Sunday as
they seek his extensive experience
in the local football industry to
help them boost their flagging fortunes.
Cities have been forced to
make the urgent approach to the
former Hearts of Oak coach as a
replacement for Goran Barjaktarevic
who was sacked on Saturday
night following the team's poor
start to the season.
Grant, who has got a
big coaching experience
both locally and internationally,
has now been approached
to help the side
improve on their performances
despite the big purchases
they made before
the start of the season.
The former Englandbased
striker who was also
successful with Dwarfs and
Elmina Sharks by reviving
their fortunes is seen as the
man to help Cities sparkle
in the league.
The Royals have began
the campaign on a disappointing
note, failing to
win any of their opening
two matches.

The team’s shaky start to the

amongst their management board.
According to a deep-throat
source, the Bosnian gaffer Barjaktarevic
has been informed that his
days at the club are numbered.
Both parties are however yet to
officially come to an agreement
over the coach's departure.

GHANA DEFENDER Mohammed
Salisu “still a way to
go” to be fit enough to play for
Southampton following his
summer move to the English
Premier League side.
The Saints boss Ralph
Hasenhuttl has been under
pressure over why the talented
centre-back has still not played
for the side depsite spending
huge amounts of money to
sign him.
The 21-year-old joined the
Premier League campaigners
from Spanish top-flight Real
Valladolid for £10.9million in
August and was expected to
play a key role for the English
side this season.
However the youngster has
not played in the Southampton's
nine matches so far this
term which has sparked concerns
in many quarters the reason
for signing the defender.
Hasenhuttl says there is still
more the Ghanaian player has
to achieve on the fitness side of
things before he can be considered
to play in one of the
toughest leagues in Europe.
insisted there was “still a way
to go” before summer signing
Mohammed Salisu would be
match fit.
The Ghanaian centre-half,
signed from Real Valladolid for
£10.9million back in August, is
yet to appear for the St Mary’s
side this season as he continues
to build up his fitness.
“He was training all the time
with us more and more – in
duels and everything. We must
have a look how his body reacts
now," Hasenhuttl told the Daily
Echo when asked about the
status of Salisu.
“There is still a way to go I
think for being match fit, but
very keen that he was now for a
minimum in two weeks part of
those sessions.
“He’s a calm guy but physically
a very strong guy. He also
shows on the ball that he has
the calm we need to build up
with his decision making.
“He is still learning what we
want to do here. It’s not so easy
– the way we defend, it’s a little
bit different, more ball-orientated.
“But I am very happy he’s
here. He’s a long-term project
and I am sure that he will play a
lot of games for us.”
Salisu was top player for
Spanish La Liga side Real Valladolid
before Southampton
