From the Pastor
Pastor Obed Nelson
It was a quiet day on Lewis Avenue. The morning
paper thunked against the garage door at 4:30 a.m.,
causing an interruption in an anticipated sleep-in.
Thanksgiving Day dawned with a cold, steady wind.
At 10:00 my cell phone rang and just-turned-elevenyear-old
granddaughter Denali called from Portland
to wish us Happy Thanksgiving. The turkey was
stuffed by 11:45 and plopped in the oven. And by
3:00 p.m. the aroma of the turkey signaled the need to
get potatoes boiled and squash heated up. As Susanne
and I sat down for our dinner we were reminded of
why Thanksgiving is one of our favorite holidays.
We enjoyed the quiet moments of recounting our
blessings.
Memories swept us back to our days in Alaska when
we would drive down to our cabin after Thanksgiving
Eve service in Anchorage. We would bundle
ourselves in blankets, crowding the wood stove as we
waited for the heat to penetrate the frozen wood. Next
afternoon before the sun would set around 3:00 p.m.
we would climb down the snowy steps and carefully
walk on the frozen river to Ernie and Gina’s cabin,
where the turkey was roasting. Pastor Rick and family
would meet us, and the three families would pool our
goodies for a Thanksgiving dinner.
Yes, Thanksgiving is a great day. As we paused
yesterday for our family devotions we were reminded
of our blessings. We are grateful for the gifts of God’s
love shown in the blessings of family, friends, our
Peace community of faith, health, and the recent getwell
cards sent to Susanne.
The daily devotion we read from Christ in Our Home
for Thanksgiving had as its scripture a portion of
Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount, from Matthew 6:25-33,
which contains these words:
“Do not worry about your life, what you will eat
or what you will drink, or about your body, what
you will wear. Is not life more than food, and the
body more than clothing? Look at the birds of
the air; they neither sow nor reap nor gather into
barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them.
Are you not of more value than they? And can any
of you by worrying
add a single hour
to your span of
life? And why do
you worry about
clothing? Consider
the lilies of the fi eld,
how they grow;
they neither toil or
spin, yet I tell you,
even Solomon in all his glory was not clothed like
one of these.”
It was interesting to consider the contrast of this
scripture to the fat Argus Leader, which rudely awoke
me, with its countless array of ads promoting an early
end to this day of giving thanks and heralding a frenzy
of shoppers clamoring for Black Friday deals.
John Gardner, who formed the citizen’s public interest
group Common Cause, wrote the following:
“If happiness could be found in having material
things, and in being able to indulge yourself
in things you consider pleasurable, then we, in
America, would be deliriously happy.”
Our November theme at Peace has been “Living in
Response.” It has been wonderful to see the number of
hands that have been taped to the wall outside of the
Shalom Room, indicating the many ways that people
are reaching out to help others. True happiness is not
found in shopping or fi nding the latest best deal on
an iPad or other gizmo. True happiness is found in
sharing, out of gratitude, what God has given to us.
It reminds me of something said by Martin Luther
King, Jr.:
“The surest way to be happy is to seek happiness
for others.”
May God richly bless you as you celebrate Advent and
the seasons of Christmas and Epiphany.
Blue Christmas, Dec. 20
Holidays are a time for families getting together to
enjoy each others company. But for lots of people,
especially those who have experienced loss, the
holidays can be a very diffi cult time. Death brings all
sorts of feelings that are diffi cult to sort through, but
perhaps the most
acute is the sense
of loneliness. But
loss is not limited
to death. Grief
accompanies
many different
kinds of losses.
For some it may
be the loss of a
relationship or the
loss of function. And the closer it comes to Christmas
the more acute the feelings of emptiness and loss can
become.
If this describes something you are feeling, you may
fi nd the Blue Christmas Service to be of great benefi t.
Our eighth annual Blue Christmas Service will be
held on Thursday, Dec. 20, at 7:00 p.m. This special
worship service has been designed for those who are
having diffi culty with celebrating Christmas. The
service will be will be a very special time of refl ection,
worship, and music. We will be using a liturgy
specifi cally designed for this occasion. You will have
an opportunity to prayerfully light a candle in memory
God’s Gift
“Because of love, God sent His Son
From heaven’s throne to earth
To rescue us from sin and death—
A Gift of priceless worth!”
What a gift we have received from God. This is the
celebration of Jesus’ birth at Christmas. Because of
God’s love, he sent this babe wrapped in swaddling
clothes and laid him in a manger. The angels knew
he was an amazing gift because they announced it in
the middle of the night. Herod tried to kill him, and
many others later rejected him. He was crucifi ed for
our sins and was buried. He arose from the tomb and
now offers salvation to all who receive him. Knowing
Jesus as Savior brings joy to our heart, peace to our
mind, and worship to our soul. How wonderful to
celebrate this gift of love from God.
December is my favorite month of the year with all
the beautiful Christmas carols, other music, and the
colors. I enjoyed being a part of Christmas programs
in a little country church when I was a child. The
heating stove was in the middle of the aisle and we
children stood on the altar and presented our parts.
What interesting times we had with bags of goodies
handed out at the end, along with a rosy red apple.
Later, at Peace, I helped with our small Sunday
School’s programs, fi nding programs that were fi tting.
It wasn’t long before the Sunday School grew and the
programs had to have their own special time. How
God has blessed us with his love for one another. It
isn’t so much the gift you receive, but the love that
goes with it.
We have many good resources for your pleasure
during the holiday season to enjoy. I hope everyone
will take some time to enjoy some good reading or a movie.
We have many good Christmas movies. Just ask
Rodora Nyberg, who watches many of them. Just in
Time for Christmas is an interesting one. Grandpa Jim
is scheduled to make a guest appearance in a special
Christmas program, but his truck breaks down on
the way. Fortunately, he does get some help and the
program turns out to be a lot of fun. Another cute
Christmas story of a different type is A Christmas
Memory. Seven-year-old Buddy gets a new home
and family. Buddy is dropped off by his parents with
a distant relative in a town where there are no other
children his age. Buddy becomes friends with an older
woman and they have many adventures together.
For some short humorous reading, you might like
Humor for the Holidays, by several prominent authors.
It is full of humorous stories and quips that will tickle
you and give you a rest from holiday stress.
Thomas Kinkade and Katherine Spencer have a series
of books that tell about Christmas in Cape Light.
The fi rst one is Christmas Treasures, and begins
when Ben is ready to celebrate his fi nal Christmas
as church pastor. In On Christmas Eve, Lucy and
Charlie’s relationship has been on the rocks, but a
teenager crosses Lucy’s path and things may change.
In A Wish for Christmas, things in Cape Light have
changed for Christmas, which bring many challenges
and gifts that will never
be forgotten. Hardships
bring people together in
Cape Light and there are
problems in A Christmas
Star. But miracles do
happen. Reverend Ben
fi nds an angel statue that
he gives to the people of
Cape Light in A Christmas
Visitor. James Cameron is
a minister who has decided
to come to Cape Light to
help Reverend Ben. In
the fi rst snowstorm, his
car collides with one driven by Leigh Baxter, who is
forced to stay in town until her car is repaired. But she
decides she likes Cape Light and is going to stay. She
has some experiences there in A Christmas Promise.
The season of Christmas is spreading in Cape Light
when the mayor, Emily, receives the unexpected
Christmas gift of a baby girl tucked in a cradle outside
the church with a note begging someone to take care
of her. Emily has many problems to ponder in The
Christmas Angel. In A Christmas to Remember, Lillian
Warwick is very ill and is recounting her life to her
daughters, who are taking care of her. In this quaint
little hamlet of Cape Light, everyone cares about
everyone else. In the other books you have read about
Worship Highlights
Waiting with a Promise
December is the season of Advent, a season of
waiting. “Waiting is essential to the spiritual life”
writes Henri Nouwen. “But waiting as a disciple of
Jesus is not an empty waiting. It is a waiting with a
promise in our hearts that makes already present what
we are waiting for. We wait during Advent for the
birth of Jesus. We wait after Easter for the coming of
the Spirit, and after the ascension of Jesus we wait for
his coming again in glory. We are always waiting, but
it is a waiting in the conviction that we have already
seen God’s footsteps.” This Advent, as we prepare for
Christmas, we look for God’s footsteps among us.
Dec. 1, 2, 5 – First Week of Advent
Read Daniel 6:6-27. Because he refused to
compromise his faith, Daniel spent a night with the
lions. His prayers were fi lled with hope and longing
for God to deliver him. God’s faithfulness to Daniel is
a reminder that God will be faithful to us as well.
Dec. 8, 9, 12 – Second Week of Advent
Read Joel 2:12-13, 28-29. The prophet Joel foresaw a
time when God would pour out his Holy Spirit on all
people. He called the people to get ready by turning to
God.
The Adult Choir will share a Christmas Cantata of
music at the 5:30, 9:00, and 10:10 p.m. services.
Dec. 15, 16, 19 – Third Week of Advent
Read Isaiah 61:1-11. The prophet Isaiah envisions a
new world based on God’s justice. It is a world fi lled
with good news for the oppressed, the brokenhearted
and all who mourn.
Dec. 22, 23 – Fourth Week of Advent
Read Luke 1:26-49. The angel Gabriel announced
to Mary that God was about to do something new.
Mary’s response was to say yes to the invitation to get
on board. We too are called to say “yes!” to the new
things God wants to do in our world today.
Dec. 24 – Christmas Eve
A family-style worship with our children helping to
tell the Christmas story, at 1:30 p.m.
Festive Christmas Eve worship with candles, carols
and Holy Communion, at 3:00, 4:30, 6:00, 9:00 p.m.
(Note: the two most crowded services on Christmas
Eve are 3:00 and 4:30 p.m. Consider arranging your
schedule so that you can attend one of the other
services and make room for our visitors. The Peace
Brass will be providing special Christmas music at
9:00 p.m.)
Dec. 25 – Christmas Day
Come worship the Christ child and give thanks for
God’s greatest gift to the world, at 10:00 a.m.
Dec. 26
No Wednesday evening worship this week!
Dec. 29, 30, Jan. 2 – First Week
of Christmas
Read Luke 2:21-38. Simeon and Anna saw the baby
Jesus and recognized that God was doing something
wonderful! Simeon broke out into song! We will
too as we sing our favorite Christmas Carols at your
request. Hymn Sing at all services.
Library continued
the problems of Mayor Emily, the death of her mother
and Reverend Ben. Now Adele Morgan, who has
made some mistakes in her life, has decided to return
to Cape Light and bring everyone together for the
holidays. You’ll see what happens with her ideas in A
Season of Angels.
Eight-year-old Lucy Turnbull knew better than to
wish for a pony that Christmas in 1937, but she did;
and when two strangers come to town, Lucy starts to
believe her Christmas wish just might come true after
all. See if it does in The Christmas Pony by Melody
Carlson.
“Christmas is the unforgettable message of love,
redemption and hope sent by God.”
May you all have a Blessed Christmas with
As we “dive” into the story of Jonah, the kids are hearing
this “whale of a tale” – not only about obedience, but
also about God’s faithfulness and mercy. Jonah tried to
